Slow gps fix on AOKP - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Please do not credit me. This is someone else's work.
A member on Rootzwiki has seem to find the ultimate fix to slow gps locks and I tried it on my Gnex AOKP 38. I was having extremely long lock times. Around 5-10 minutes outdoors and no lock what so ever indoors.
Here is the thread on Rootzwiki.http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13980-slow-gps-lock-on/page__st__10
Scroll to the bottom and follow the instructions to edit the gps.cnf file. I had to reboot my phone to see the difference but WOW. I haven't even tried outdoors yet but indoors i'm receiving a lock within 5-10 seconds.

Seems to be an issue with Android 4.0.4. Will give it a go on CM9.

Comfirmation?
I haven't really had any problems with Gnex GPS signal lock. But if this improves things then I'm all for it. Can anyone else confirm that this works ok without borking anything?

Use faster fix app works wonders

Instant lock on stock, unrooted, un-f'd-with GSM Nexus 4.0.4. This is why I am done with the ROM scene...stuff like this is a PITA.

I'm telling you guys use faster fix app it is so easy when someone makes a Rom it usually sets there pool for GPS lock to the area they set it, for example Asia or Europe if you want the pool for your continent then you need to set it manually or use faster fix [email protected]@ I'll put screen shots later If you guys need . A example is when I install cyanogen mod it always sets my pool for Europe so I set it back to north America using faster fix BAM instant GPS lock

Interesting ... for me Aokp is quite fast to lock ... never more than one minute or within seconds if it's locked in the last few hours. I do use faster fix though so maybe it really works.
Sent from my GNex

If you had data and it took ages to take a fix, make sure Google's location service is checked, it will lock faster.

GPS fix??

gps sucks on this phone. Its not bad if you reboot the phone and use it but if u don't reboot the phone for a while it wont lock. Anyone else have this problem? Also has anyone found a dialer code where we can change some things on GPS? I know the original epic we could change settings by using a dialer code. Thanks.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
I've never had GPS problems on my phone and I use it almost daily. Locks in seconds and keeps decent track of my location. Perhaps your unit is defective?
Maybe its pretty awful. This dialer code ##gpsclrx# has helped it. It resets the gps. It still sucks. Do you have agps on as well?

I have the same issue. Its worse when I use something like juicedefender that enables GPS as needed. Thw first lock, like you said, is quick, but down hill from there.

Same issues I had with gps from moment to epic and now this. Why Samsung?

well at least you get the first lock. it takes forever for me to get my first lock. Possibly 5+ minutes. Heck, I drove out of the city yesterday with google maps open and gps on. It never got a lock until I reached my destination. Talk about useless!
Soo glad im not the only person with this issue. Came from the Evo and the GPS on thie phone is horrible. The only way I get it to lock is using GPS toolbox and clearing the GPS data then downloading the AGPS assistance and letting it lock. Then I can open maps/navigator.

You are lucky. That gives me hope that mine might be defective because it is off by at least a half mile. i will try to exchange today.
I use my GPS anywhere from 2-10 times a day. I use it for my business when I'm heading to new customers' places and I also do some geocaching and mountain biking in my spare time. The GPS on the Touch has yet to give me any problems at all. Just my experience. I usually get a lock within 5 seconds down to about 3 meters. I came from the OG Epic as well, so I know what crappy GPS can be like.
But the LOS issue only effects some so I'm sure there can be a GPS bug that only effects some too.
mine doesn't work either. debating on trying to exchange it.
Apparently, some are reporting that if you disable "encryption" of the SD card, this frees up the GPS. This may not be everyone's savior because I don't have mine encrypted and "very occasionally" get GPS issues.
The other way I've rectified a momentary loss of GPS is by using the GPS status by Chartcross. When in there, go to Menu, settings, update AGPS. Works like a charm. 85% of the time, I get a lock within 2-5 seconds max. Sometimes it just doesn't want to see the sky very well.....so I update AGPS
Sometimes mine take a bit to lock. I'll usually just toggle the GPS off then back on and it locks quick.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I guess I am going to have to take mine in. None of these fixes work for me including the gpsclrx command from the other thread. The best I ever got was 1 in view and 0 in use after 10 minutes of scanning.
I know rebooting the phone clears out the GPS cache. My phones GPS is okay for the first like 24 hours but if don't reboot it after that I have nothing. Might start trying some apps.

123 Best gps fix!!! Thanks Daryelv.. December 9th 2011

IM RUNNING CALKS latest and greatest btw... Most all fixes get a fast lock, or at least a lock after a reboot. The REAL test is:will it still get a lock after, lets say, 8hrs? This is the only "fix" that has truly passed that test... Try it, and you will agree I like to open gps status and get a lock on satelites before i use my gps too, if that makes any difference.
This zip, plus GPS status works the best. Wipe dalvik and cache then flash away....
Best way to check is use GPS to get first lock and directions.... if that's good, then try to do the same thing a few hours later BEFORE A REBOOT.... works like a charm.... I finally think this one works guys... check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13140032&postcount=17953
What problem is this fixing?
I have been using GPS Status for a long time. I would do the same on my Epic...open GPS Status, let it lock then Maps and Telenav had much better and quicker lock. I wasn't aware of those area fixes though. Telenav has been flawless on this phone for me around L.A. but I will definitely see what they're about. Thanks

This is fixing my gps not working at all... Sometimes it would work off of several reboots.Same for my gf's et4g. i was tempted to exchange it for another et4g. I've had my phone since day 1, and gps has never worked consistenly.. Now it works flawlessly! Thanks again Angeldeath!!
##GPSCLRX# + MSL will reset your gps, a lot less of a pain too if your having problems getting a fix.
i think the gps is very weak. i can never get a lock in my basement while my evos never had a problem. when im outside, my e4gt will get a lock eventually.
tried all kinda of fixes none work. though i think i must have borked it somehow. maybe a complete reformat will fix it but dont wanna do that any time soon

Depending on where you live should determine which zip you should download. And if you travel all over the u.s., just use the north american zip.(i recommend using the zip for the actual area that you live in)... Next, flash from recovery, then install GPS Status & Toolbox from the market.Turn on gps, open up gps status & toolbox, and select menu/settings/Display & Tools.. Then check "Show time to Gps fix"...keep gps status & toolbox open till sats are fixed..DONE. NOW I get immediate locks!!!
Anytime you reboot or power off, you have to open GPS Status to fix sats... THANKYOU ANGELDEATH and Xenova FOR THIS WONDERFUL GPS FIX THAT ACTUALLY WORKS FOR OUR PHONES!!!

this fix doesn't work
my phone was good until last week, now navigation never works, GPS takes 30-90 seconds to get a location within a few meters of me.
i've been trying everything, as many have been, and this fix only works for the first minute after using gps status. if i wait an hour and check maps again, i have to reset and re-download to get sats again and it still doesn't always work.
at this point i'm mildly convinced it's a hardware issue. unless a new driver is found, i'm going to try to get an exchange soon.
Edit:
Going back to square one (so far) has been a good fix - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
Edit 2:
Nope, going back to pure stock works as temporary as flashing regional GPS sats or clearing GPS cache

Some of those weather apps use the network location, not gps, and some display the nearest weather reporting station instead of your exact location. It all depends where the apps get its information from.
Beautiful widgets reported Dudley as location, the town next to me, probably using that tower. Weather Bug reports popular bluff airport, 25 miles away.

GPS lock and quality on ICS builds FC20+

Can someone please post a review of how their GPS has been working on the FC20 and later versions of ICS build leaks? Also, does the NETWORK LOCATION actually update frequently?
QBKing77 said it was locking instantly, but wasn't really using it all that much it didn't sound like.
Anyone give a more indepth account of how GPS is behaving? Is it vastly improved over EL29? Good jesus I hope so, EL29 GPS is awful.
This wasn't specifically discussed in the 320+ pages of the FC24 post thread, sorry for starting a new post.
EDIT: Sorry for the mistitle of RC instead of FC20+. Phone typo. Got it right in the post though
RC20+? Where can I download this mighty rom sir?
Maybe he meant FC20+ rom.
I too would like to know this answer. Especially regarding network location updates. And yes, I could just flash it myself and try it out, but the multitude of bricks has scared me off...
Works freaking awesome. Locks fast and works like it should. Almost one hundred times better than EL29. You can flash the modem for FC22 and still keep your EL29 rom and kernel if you would like.
I am on FC18 and I have no complaints. It works perfectly for me.
Sorry guys,
I meant "FC20+" my phone must have been changing it back to RC need to proof read better.

I agree with the comment above. The GPS on FC18 and FC22 has been awesome. Locks and disconnects good as well when you are not using it and reconnects perfectly just in case you are driving through a tunnel or something no more having to reset your phone to reconnect to gps.
That's great to hear. The lock, loss and relock is the death sentence on EL29.
I'm very excited to see this is finally fixed. I might flash this in a couple days. This really is the last thing holding this phone from perfection.

You can do that by simply clearing the launcher defaults or by using the Sprint id and switching between my id and Samsung id. I use the Sprint id its faster to me lol. And the good thing is on ics they don't have the stupid sprint id built into the dock!

Yes, I'm aware of the SprintID "clean". GGB launcher is not as nice as TW launcher, IMO. However, I like the look of the ICS launcher (which is more TW than GGB). The 5 docked icons (4 customizable) is nice. I also prefer the ICS method of making folders over the TW method.
My GPS started working with FC22. It did not work for me with any of the previous builds
i still have calkulins lastest gingerbread rom with FC22 modem and i thinks its been pretty darn good for me....locks inside are horrible though in my house, but once i step outside..i'd say around 20-30sec locks....sometimes earlier,
before i installed the ICS modems, i used EL29 modem and it workd ok, i was sorta sceptical before isntalling the FC modems, cause it took forever to get my GPS to lock on properly so i had this crazy idea...find a CELL PHONE TOWER..lol
there was this cell phone tower build in town around 20mins away where im at,
so i drove right by it, i was like 10 feet away from the tower and turn my GPS on...locked in secs...therefore after that..been working GREAT...lol even after i install all the new modems, just dont clear cache..
just my experience...
My GPS couldn't connect at all in any ICS ROM (I had tried several FB/FC builds). Then i finally did the "Flash to EL29, get GPS lock, flash to ICS ROM", and that fixed it. But I didn't use Nandroid at all.
I think that my Titanium Pro restore was overwriting something that was causing the GPS to break. This last time I did more of a selective restore of system data and it's still working.
I've been one of those horrid Epic GPS people for the longest time. I couldn't get locks after awhile no matter where I was, and what combo of gps.txt files that I used without a fresh reboot. And now the last few ICS iterations have been a night and day difference. I can get a lock, close it down, and a few hours later get a lock if needed in under a minute, sometimes in 10 seconds. The network location works great on the apps and pages that use it. Now granted the gps isn't as strong as my former HTC phones which would lock under water if needed (kidding, but almost true) it works much better then it ever has.... Although I hope they up the signal strength of the G3.
you should never use a restore from gb on ics... the programs are completely different

I want to retrack my statement above about the FC22 modem. I recently did a system wipe on my phone and consequently my GPS doesn't get a lock with FC22 inside of my house. The two best modems are FC18 and EL29, both of these modems consistently retain their GPS settings and get a lock from inside of my house rather quickly.

Has anyone figured out which radio version works best with WIND Mobile in Canada?
My phone seems to randomly lose data connection. To get data back, I turn mobile data off then on again. It happens so frequently, I have it in my Notification window as a toggle.
I have Automatcher v7 to match RIL with radio version. I also have wipe EFS.

Use latest Radio from T-Mobile 26.13.04.19_M, I'm on it, have never lost 3.5 G data connection
I am currently running ILWT but experienced the same running CM 7, ICS Audacity and ICS Quattro.

Update
I don't think it is the network. My father's Amaze does not have this problem in the same places.
ILWT has been the most reliable ROM for me so far. I am currently running Andromadus b4 and am considering switching back because of the data drop-out issue. I have tried 5 different radio versions now.
It must be the ROM. Perhaps it encounters some data it can't make sense of and crashes. Perhaps it just needs to restart itself when this happens. A simple mobile data off, mobile data on fixes it almost every time.
I also find the bars reading incorrect. I be driving down the road with my screen on and the charger plugged in, and it will show me full bars. I can pull over and park for a few minutes, bars still full. Then suddenly half bars, no bars. This behavior is from a device that isn't being physically surrounded / shielded and is stationary.
Anyways, my G2 is getting old and it needs a another core to keep up with the way I now use it. I will wait for Jelly Bean but will likely switch to IOS.
Reasons If You Care
The menu button disaster is a big one for me. Also the lack of quick updates from Google for Nexus S and Nexus One. These devices should have had OS updates released on the same day the Galaxy Nexus was released.
ICS should have been backwards compatible for older devices as well. A few #ifdef in the code for fancy screen rendering and such. Big, huge fail!
Google, also, should have required no physical menu button for access to Google apps to enforce the new way. With only like 7% ICS market share no wonder app devs write for GB.
Google's handling of Android updates has opened my eyes.

The issue isn't ICS. The issue is the vendors haven't released proper drivers for ICS. What we're dealing with is code we've hacked up to make things work. If the vendors released ICS source code for our devices things would be much more stable.
We're always working within our means. It's not Android/Google's fault and it's not an ICS issue, it's just circumstance.
Thanks
I realize where most of the issues lie. I am an EE grad so I can imagine how difficult hacking ROMs together without device drivers might be.
Writing ASM for a microproc with the datasheets is bad enough. Without knowing what each control register is for and what each bit controls, it is a guessing game at best. I get that.
I very much do appreciate your work. As you are aware, from reading my post, I run a ROM you contribute to. Thank you. You have prolonged the life / pleasure balance I require from my smartphone.
I would contribute more to the development, but my post count was less than 10. I was actually working towards my 10 posts today to post in the dev forums. (The Andromadus beta 4 thread to be more precise).

I would contribute more to the development, but my post count was less than 10. I was actually working towards my 10 posts today to post in the dev forums. (The Andromadus beta 4 thread to be more precise).

I have the same issues, G2 on Wind as well. I've had some ROMs where it never occured, but then they had some kind of bug that left me unhappy. I'm currently on CM 7.2 RC1, and I keep a "data" toggle in my notification bar. When it drops I toggle it off and on and it connects again pretty quickly. Until about twelve months ago, MMS was unreliable, but I don't seem to have problems with that anymore.
In general I'm not happy with Android, but as the alternatives are all utterly closed systems I guess I'm stuck with it. It would be unbearable if it weren't for the hard work of all the developers around this forum. Thanks, developers
Agreed. Google has been a huge let down for me as well. Updates are slow or non existent in Canada (even on Nexus devices). Look at the percentage of devices that run ICS. JB is what ICS was supposed to be. I may get an iPhone for work. I am excited to compare it to my Samsung S3 on CM10.

GPS issues on Rogers note 2

Hi I have a data plan with Rogers so the a-gps should be picking location with maps or waze. I was driving this morning but the gps was searching the whole time. I was on 4g during this time. All 3 of the boxes under location services are checked.
Thanks for any ideas
Depends heavily on the position inside your car.
The closer to a window or the windscreen the better. Try holding it up to the drivers window for a few seconds and see if it locks on.
Even the best GPS isn't going to work if it's completely shielded from the satellites by the metal roof.
Restart GPS Navigation app or Restart phone helps.

Should not have to restart your phone every time you want to use navigation.
I am having the same issue.
The GPS icon won't even display in the info bar without a restart.
Do you think this is a hardware or software issue ??
I notice about once a day on average that the gps icon will show up in the status bar. Sometimes it's only for a second or two and sometimes it's there for a couple of minutes. One time I saw it and it just seemed to last forever (I didn't time it but I'd guess 15-30 minutes).
I've gotten messages a few times about apps not being able to access location services. I don't use maps very much but I had it open the other day and it just froze up on me. No message about gps but I didn't keep the app open very long after it was obvious it wasn't going to work.
I'm on rogers in Ottawa.
Edit: Just played around in maps/navigation and gps flat out doesn't work. It was using cell tower triangulation and searching for gps the whole time. I had to turn on wifi to get an accurate location.

Anyone have a home made solution or is this a warranty issue?

So, after I posted last night I went out side and checked my GPS. Sitting on the steps infront of my building I conected to GPS in google maps and navigation right away - it worked like a charm.
Then I noticed it said "4G" instead of LTE in the status bar. I live downtown surrounded by buildings and I drop to "4G' on my front steps like 90% of the time. So, I get up and walk down the block and my LTE kicks in. Low and behold, I lost GPS. It only happened briefly but I lost the signal during the switch. Then I read that the note 2 only has a-GPS and lacks regular GPS. I don't know a ton about this stuff but I did read that connecting to GPS can sometimes be an issue if you only have a-GPS and your connection sucks.
Hopefully this is something that can be fixed with a software update. Who knows, maybe this is why those of us with the I317/I317M are the last ones to get the OTA update. I'm gonna call rogers today and let them know about the issue and see what they say. I don't wanna go through the hassle of exchanging my phone if every handset has this issue right now.
Are you using the Perseus kernel? If so GPS does not seem to work correctly regardless of which location provider is used. I reverted to stock and my GPS works.

I am not sure if everyone is having this defect with their phone. I hear some phones lock instantly on gps signal even indoors. Can you let me know what Rogers tells you after you call. Would be appreciated. Thank you.

You could try flashing this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442038
I'm assuming OP has already tried this?

My Rogers Note 2 has no problems with GPS at all. If you're all stock and have spotty connections, than it's your area. Tall buildings would probably hinder GPS fixes initially.
Rogers here unlocked . Telus network. Rooted and themed and modded. GPS works wonderfully.

Right now I'm stock/unrooted and I intend to stay that way for the time being. I'll be heading to the mall later so I'll pay a visit to the Rogers store and Wireless Wave (awesome third party wireless store in Canada - they really know their ****) and see what they say.
I have the bell version. Just tested on lte. In my house locked on in 4 secs with no wifi.. Gps works great on my phone.

Sorry I took so long to respond but I got sucked in to the mall lol.
So, long story short. Nobody has any clue and the unusually clueless staff at the rogers store (casual Christmas employees) basically said I need to talk to Samsung cuz my 15 days are up. The guys at wireless wave hadn't heard anything about anybody having any issues with gps. Finally, I went to Telus and found someone who actually had a clue and she said it was the first she'd heard of it and actually recommended I check xda.
On my way home now and then I'll call rogers. I'm not hopeful about the outcome lol.
Stay tuned...
I'll post back again when I

sorry about your luck at the mall.
Curious to know what rogers says to you ! :good:
Hello folks,
Just an update .. I have been playing around with waze (free at the appstore) for the last day and a half and my gps has been flawless.
Our GPS issues could more then likely be with the actual Navigation app that comes pre installed.
By the way Waze seems to be very impressive I must admit :good:
I used something similar to that app posted.the ones I have is called gpstest.showing 0 satellites for me.like another poster said, should not have to restart the phone or flash firmware on it for GPS to work.it should work otb
Thanks for the feedback

Interesting... I've had this issue happen only once. Nothing I did would start a GPS search. I waited about 2 hours outdoors in a car. Once I restarted the phone, it had a lock on lots of sattelites within 10 sec.
It hasn't happened since.
