Why so many different kernels? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

At the risk of being chucked of the edge of the earth...
Why are the so many different kernels I do understand as a Linux novice that there are a million +1 features in the kernel but surely all the different n7100 kernels do the same thing eventually?
Please be patient with me I am just trying to understand why so many and not one SUPER kernel where the features are turned of and on at the users will...
p.s. using the red pill kernel and that seems brilliant..

Basically yes, but every kernel is made by different individuals who have different philosophies. And some build from samsung sources, some build from cm or other sources. Some kernels might give better performance for some, but suffer in battery usage for others. And some kernels hace unique features. For example, I use neak mainly because of its superior audio options. Others will use perseus because they find the way cpu is handled gives better battery life.
Cpu options, oc and undervolt is for the most part the same in all kernels.

Isn't that why there are different governors that are usually available in most kernels?

Yeah, most governors are similar, but it's common to see modified governors in the respective kernels.

Changing Kernel on Aokp 7/28

I was just wondering if I should stick with the stock kernel that comes with task and ktoonez ROM or switch to ktoonez's kernel for even more butter/battery life?

I'm not entirely sure if using ktoonez kernel will give you better battery life but you can overclock his kernel which could make things a bit smoother. You can also undervolt his kernel too which is a nice feature.

You should really advise someone that doesn't know to try both and see which one better suites the device in particular. All devices are not created equally and they all react differently to different kernels. While you may get better battery life with that kernel I do not. And so on and so on down the line.
Thanks guys. I have it flashed and I am giving it time to settle and see how it does...

+1 I also get better battery on stock aokp kernel. And on KT kernel I can't get voltage control to stick all of the time and my phone bugs out from min being at 192.

Galaxy Nexus Kernel?

Hey guys,
recently rooted my phone (for the first time) and flashed CM10. I've been reading about Kernels and how they can improve battery life and performance and stuff.
I haven't really understood how a kernel would work. Can I just flash it like how I flashed a ROM? Would it 'delete' my earlier CM10 kernel?
Which kernels are compatible with CM10? Which is the best for battery life and snappiness of the processor?
I've heard of Lean,PopcornKernal, and of course, francos.
Thanks,
Sahil
All of them are good. There isn't a best kernel. You should really stay away from asking those questions. And if you don't tune the kernel there is no way to get any difference than from stock.

Im not sure if cm10 requires its own set of kernels but my phone liked the air kernel (ran cooler) and lean (as a bonus removed the purply tint at lower brightness)

depends on the kernel, on the device and on the user.
mpu/core/iva voltages, smartreflex and color control are a few examples.

kernels are like the engine to a car/rom. They're pretty much what manages and drives everything, whereas the rom is like the entire OS.
Every ROM comes with a kernel by default but it can be replaced simply by flashing a kernel on top of it. Conversely, flashing a rom will replace whatever kernel you're running now with the rom's kernel.

Many kernels come with their apps (which can be found in their threads), or some apps might have access to some properties. Also, some roms (cm comes to mind) have access to some properties of some kernels, though there was a recent fuss made about incompatibility so its not perfect.
Franco Kernel
Hey guys! I want to root my GN and I'm a bit confused about what Kernel use...
I have seen this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367341
Did anyone try the newest version of Franco Kernel (r292)? What's about stability, battery drains, lags... ?
I'd recommend trying Franco's kernel out, it is supported by a nice updater app that can auto-flash the kernel and keep you informed of updates. Doing a bit of research yourself is also always recommended here - this site is for learning about your device. Good luck!
James bond kernal claims to be best in battry life , bt acc. To me trinity alpha 67 with setcpu profiles provide best results.

The underwear kernel that's packaged with it or KT747.

It's really going to vary from person to person. Try them out and see. Underwear is great but KT747 gives you more control through overclocking and undervolting, and more governors, etc.
Just so you know. The is no "best" kernel and no one can answer this for you. The reason being is that not all devices are created equally and these devices act different to different kernels and different settings. So for someone to tell you that you will get better battery life on either one would be a lie. You just need to play around with them and their different settings in order to find which one works best for your particular device.

Pimp My Rom and Task650's AOKP

I know that Pimp My Rom is a Universal tweaking app for most phones, but does it really help considering that Task's ROM is so polished? Are the tweaks really helping out the performance of the phone or the speed of the connections. Anyway to compare before and after ?
I wouldn't touch pimp my rom unless I was running stock tw most certainly not with tasks aokp. Just saying.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using XDA Premium HD app
Yeah I guess your correct, I always see people commenting about PMR , V6 or lightning tweaks for devices . I guess many of these tweaks would be considered for older devices and less developed ROMs. Just wondering if anyone has anyone done comparisons?
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Id add a diff kernel though, the LeanKernel gives me better battery on tasks aokp
If you were to do anything i would suggest a nandroid first, just in case something goes wrong.

I have watched most of the apps you mentioned from beta or before. They are pointless to roms like tasks. The tweaks are alot of different settings that do little to nothing unless your stock or on a less developed rom. If you look deep down in those apps they are just settings to different things that already have a custom setting from task and aokp that any developer can change.

Which kernel is the best custom kernel for note 2

I prefer N.E.A.K. in conjunction with uNEAK Engine and their Multi-Core Manager for better battery life.
Depends on what you're looking for. There's no objectively "best" kernel - and neither are these threads allowed here.
I'm using Devil at the moment, and it's great. Dual booting AOSP/TW.
Well, I agree it's all subjective. I am trying a little bit to add some objectivity by having the Grand Survey of ROMs+Kernels for the N7100 and N7105.
I've integrated both ROM and Kernel selections so you can rate and score both of these factors and also rate a value for Screen On Time.
You can see the aggregate values of people who have tried various ROM and Kernel combinations, and a separate value for the Screen On Time they have achieved.
You can then determine which is best for your usage.
You may pay a visit to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232765
and I invite everyone to post their own entries for all ROM and Kernel combinations you've tried. Allows specific version selection.
many people says that the Stock Kernel is always the best
I'm using Perseus too atm (OC & UV for better battery life) and the performance is very good
I haven't tried other kernels/roms yet, still feeling my way around android this being my first device (N900 user)

Stock's fine - but don't think it's the best. For instance, color calibration, DEE, headphone volume amplificaiton etc. aren't possible without custom kernels. I would highly recommend custom kernel, personally.

Devil. Lot of other features you take granted for, you can read changelog for the record. Sound amplification, Screen calibration (i.e. perfect color reproduction rather than awful samsung calibration) are the ones I find most important. On devil because it supports dual boot.
This threads are allowed now?

In fact many people say that the stock ROM is the best, not so much for kernels.
Because unlike the full ROM, the kernel is entirely opensource, it means that it is possible to retain all features from stock while adding customization.
