Pimp My Rom and Task650's AOKP - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I know that Pimp My Rom is a Universal tweaking app for most phones, but does it really help considering that Task's ROM is so polished? Are the tweaks really helping out the performance of the phone or the speed of the connections. Anyway to compare before and after ?

I wouldn't touch pimp my rom unless I was running stock tw most certainly not with tasks aokp. Just saying.

Yeah I guess your correct, I always see people commenting about PMR , V6 or lightning tweaks for devices . I guess many of these tweaks would be considered for older devices and less developed ROMs. Just wondering if anyone has anyone done comparisons?
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2

Id add a diff kernel though, the LeanKernel gives me better battery on tasks aokp

If you were to do anything i would suggest a nandroid first, just in case something goes wrong.

I have watched most of the apps you mentioned from beta or before. They are pointless to roms like tasks. The tweaks are alot of different settings that do little to nothing unless your stock or on a less developed rom. If you look deep down in those apps they are just settings to different things that already have a custom setting from task and aokp that any developer can change.

POSSIBLE ICS Rom...want everyones take!

Ok I have been a major lurker on xda for a while. I just created an xda profile a few days ago and made my first contribution with a hacked hulu plus app. Now I want to make a bigger contribution. In the form of a ROM. Ive got my build environment up and running smooth.
Now I dont want any donations. You wont find any donations links any where. I hack and build for fun. This community has many taliented developers. I just hope to merge what I know into real world stuff.
Now my question to the community is what do you want to see in a Rom? Features? Tweaks?

Same. It's very smooth and I like it a lot. Lmk when you get an ICS TW ROM with good battery life like EL29.
Just a fully functional ICS Stock rom that plays nice with the battery is all I can really ask for
You developers spend enormous amount of time and effort to provide to this community and it'll be absurd for people to "expect" ANYTHING. Thank you in advance for any future work you provide for the community.
Settings like AOKP with status bar changes and lockscreen changes and a theme engine would be sweet also.

As long as it's a TW Rom that would be awesome. I like TW and there's a **** ton of people that add launchers to their roms, might as well get CM or AOKP.
Again TW and fast would be nice to see. I have had bad luck with ICS, my phone always hangs for some reason on all leaks.
Thanks in advance.
an aosp ics rom with every single customization option imported from aokp, codename, gummy, slim, and cm9. if you can get that with flawless mms, camera/camcorder, great battery life, with no service or data loss, and properly working sdcard, then you'll have yourself the best aosp rom available hands down.
This may be asking a lot, but i would love to see some of the tweaks for this ROM added. It may be kernel tweaks so i dont know if it is possible. My Mother's phone is running it and after 2 days she still has 50% battery.

Edit: It seems kernel development has slowed down a lot here for our ET4G. I see this topic is for an ICS ROM so oops.

Honestly, would just like to see what you come up with. It can be TW based, aokp, cm9.... either way, there is going to be someone not pleased with your work. I think you should just pick and choose what you like, put it together, and the community will love you for it. I myself do prefer a nice lock screen mod (like maddoggin and the new aosp mod). The launcher I could give two s#*T's about, as long as it runs smooth. The best of luck to you. Hope to see some good things in the future.

A touch wiz ROM with mods like AOKP (status bar notification and lockscreen mods ) and behaves like AOKP, the reason behind it being a touchwiz ROM is because the little touchwiz touches are nice( video player, working led, HW accelerated UI and browser and etc) ,putting other UI's might just cause problems (battery and lag). Yet I can only dream!! Just an idea. If this is even possible.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
My opinion is to offer options.
Help swamp goblin port sense 4.0.
Help maintain and update MIUI if needed.
Port over motoblur (just so peeps can try it)
Help tcp if needed with aokp or cma or gummy.
Etc. Etc. The more options we have, the happier everyone will be.
While not a rom, how about porting the cm9 reloaded mod to our phone. The systemUI of the mod needs to be merged with ours to get the 4g toggle and other stuff working. I would do it, but time isn't something I have at the moment.

How are ROMs different?

So I'm just wondering what makes all the ROMs different? Specifically all the TW ROMs. I understand that each dev uses different tweaks and stuff but what are they exactly..? What are the different things tweaked that make a ROM different and maybe even better than other ROMs? And if a certain tweak makes the ROM better then why don't all ROMs have the same tweaks and edits?

See, that's what I was thinking because I've tried like every TW ROM at least once and to me battery life is almost always the same and so is performance. The only differences I ever feel is depending on the kernel. And I also feel like some ROMs go better with a certain kernel then others do.
But other than the choice of kernel I don't see any difference. So not to discourage anyone or diss anyone or anything like that but why do people even make TW ROMs and claim that their ROM is better if all are actually the same kinda?

Aww, I miss the viperRoms
There's a lot of times themed APKs, which sometimes requires modified XMLs and modified PNG files.
There are some extra scripts in system/etc/init.d and lines in build.prop that optimize speed by making things mount faster or making it possible for more applications to be open.
Also, there can be modified framework to add features or change look and feel or speed. Ex: on HTC devices, the framework can be modified to get rid of the paginated app drawer on Sense. Can't think of any specific Samsung examples because I've never made tweaked stock ROMs but mostly do ports.

I ran CM !0 for a few days but I used a Mac and MTP doesn't work so its a bit of a deal breaker for me, but in all fairness its Extremely stable to be an Alpha build. My first android phone was the G1 and then on to the Nexus One so i'm a sucker for AOSP based android roms and for Cyanogen Mod in general so ill be running it when the MTP gets sorted out on my Mac.
I tried Wanams rom, I remember him from my SGS2, Hes a great Dev & its really stable as well.
The best all around so far for me is AndroidUser00110001's Rom linked below. I've found the wifi disconnect problem that i was having with the other TW Roms is gone and it has had the best over all balance of performance and stability.

I have looked at it, and the one I have installed on my phone even has the Aurora designation I intend to use if I publicly release a rom for this phone, so we will see.
Also, son of a *****, godaddy didn't auto-renew my domain. Guess I will need a new one.

Definitely AOKP. Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean versions are awesome. I've yet to find any bugs that keep it from being a daily driver. In fact I've found none. But I haven't used it that in depth much, we shall see.
But I put my vote in for AOKP. By far the best, and I only flash for AOSP based ROMs anyways. :good:

Completely stock vs custom rom

Hey I'm just wondering I know it's kind of hard to measure without getting into benchmarks score before and after, but have you guys notice a big difference in speed when you guys were stock then going to a custom rom? Just would like to know if there's any incremental speed bump. Just want to know if I should bother rooting and all that stuff because this phone is fast already stock. I'm fully aware of all the cool things rooting does so it's not a question of whether I should root or not but I'm more interested if the phone feels a lot snappier, thank you.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Well that all depends on the rom or kernel itself. There isn't really one custom rom. Lots of different options mate.
Rooting isn't hard. I'd recommend it. I was on stock since August till last month when I got bored and decided to root.

First of all as far as rooting goes there is a big difference between rooted and un-rooted phones.
There are so many excellent apps which require the phone to be rooted or they simply won't work.
Also if you plan to use custom roms your phone must be rooted, all custom roms are pre-rooted.
The custom roms are generally faster than stock roms although to be honest it's not something which
you would really notice when using most applications or games which you may have installed.
The main advantage the custom roms have over stock is that they have a lot more features, settings,
options, themes and they are fine tuned to use less battery power than stock roms.
I would suggest to only flash and use stock based custom roms. (Samsung Galaxy S3 Jellybean v4.1.1 custom roms)
Using other roms like the ported roms or CM/AOKP/AOSP Android roms generally cause more problems
than they are worth, not to mention the fact that none of them have the Wifi calling feature which is only
found in stock based Samsung Galaxy S3 Jellybean v4.1.1 custom roms.
The AOKP/AOSP/CM and ported roms are excellent for those people who like to experiment with their phones.
Good Luck!
Yeah lately getting bored of stock, itching to hack away. All my previous phones needed rooting to actually function right like the g2x. this one has been the first one to worked great stock. Thanks for the info

Voodoo sound is obsolete but there are many other audio hacks which work even better
like DSP Audio, Awesome Beats, Volume+ and others which all work with our phones.
None of them come with the stock firmware.
Most all of the Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 custom roms will have an option for one of
the above audio enhancements.

I have to say that CM / AOSP 4.2.2 ROMs are light years smoother than stock touchwiz, but touchwiz scores higher in quadrant because there is proprietary code that Qualcomm gives to OEMs for optimization. AOSP ROMs are open source and thus that secret sauce is not included.

Yeah, that explains the sometimes 1000 pt. difference in the CPU category in quadrant tests (between TW and AOSP). Do you think that "secret sauce" offers any real world advantage? I mean, what does that optimization that Qualcomm is providing to Sammy really do? I also find AOSP 4.2 to be smoother somehow... but the 1000 lower score concerns me.

Pros/Cons of a Rom

My Spring Note 2 is currently stock rooted, and I'm thinking of beginning to start downloading and exploring some of the rom's out there. But before doing so, I'm wondering is anyone has any advice a pros and con's of each one, or maybe interested in starting one? Not looking for what the 'best' may be, as that's a personal choice, but more of a feature list, etc of each rom.
I would really like to test the Jedi rom, but unfortunately it is not available for the sprint note 2.
I have use lots of aokp roms as well as touchwiz and my experiences are that aokp roms losses signal a lot % 20 percent of areas I have use cm, carbon, pacman, paranoid, stock aokp and all of them seems to be the same but paranoid and pacman have a bit better signal, now on touchwiz roms you will not see that I recommend macks rom or lab rat rom for me this 2 roms are stable I have try many more but some of them have to much theme. I hope this help you if you have any question let me know as I have try lots of roms Thanks

All roms have pros and cons, but only the individual user can make those determinations as all users are different.
Threads like these get closed as the always spiral into arguments about which rom is best, members are expected to do their own research and reading to determine what it is they want.
