Can you burn your radios? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

It looks like I may have done it again. On my first galaxy nexus I had it for over a year and then all of a sudden I had no signal and whenever I tried to call I got a mobile network not available. Now it has happened again. Can the radios malfunction for no reason or is flashing Roms too much a bad thing for it. Just trying to get more info on it since googling did yield much help...thnx in advance

I'd like to know too, since this is pretty much what happened to me. I "only" flashed 12 times total. I am under the impression that the NAND memory is good for a couple of hundred writes.

Yea its pretty weird and I'll say maybe random but it all ready happened twice. Not sure if its only an issue with Verizon galaxy nexus or all of them but right now I'm in the process of unrooting and relocking.

It could also be your ROM/Kernel combination. Might try changing ROM's and/or Kernels to see if that helps. Our phones can be temperamental sometimes

I flashed more than 100 times now, ans no problems here...

I flashed two different roms after seeing my signal dead and nothing. This morning i went back to stock 4.1.1 and still nothing. Its all good since i allready called verizon and they are sending me a replacement but i just cant believe this has happened twice in my last two nexus devices.

yea i had my nexus since launch day and rooted it and started flashing in about a week. but after 13 months of constant flashing whether it be nightlies or major updates, the signal just burned out or something, not really sure what happened. When i went to a verizon store they were clueless as always (but to be fair its not like i brought up the fact that i was rooted or anything so they had no idea) and gave me a replacement and in one week the same thing happened again, just want to find out if it is possible to burn the radios or if its an LTE radio burn out?

So I'm guessing its a very rare thing to burn the radios.

My radios quit and I just replaced the sim card. After that all was fine.

LOS Strictly a hardware problem?

First of all let me point at that I am currently still a OG EVO user. This will probably be my next phone on DEC. 1 once I am due for a upgrade with Sprint. I really love the design and specs for this phone but I have been turned off by all the LOS talk.
If a phone can't maintain a working signal it isn't much good no matter how nice the screen or specs are.
After doing some research on what I hope will be my next phone, I've come to the conclusion that this is a hardware problem. From what I can gather these phones have some kind of defect with the internal antenna which is causing this problem.
This probably isn't news to anyone on these forums but I just wanted to get some confirmation on this. I'm hoping that if this is in fact that problem the next batch of these phones released around the holiday season will have this problem fixed.
Assuming this hardware problem is not fixed; is there any rom/kernel combination that is known to be most effective in terms of this LOS issue?
Na don't think it's a hardware issue, if so I believe it wouldn't be so random. With the LOStKernel I haven't had any more issues but others have. That being said, if it were a hardware issue i would've had los as well already.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I agree If this is Hardware issues that say the Antenna get low signal and then won't pick it back up. Then That Pickup is what needs to be fixed (and that is software). We've all had low signal or switched to Roaming. This is where the issue is, at least to me. The Low Signal strength maybe a 2nd issue but that may need a Power adjustment.
I also agree with the LOSKernel. I was averaging 1-2 a day and haven't had one in 3 days (I installed 3 days ago).

Interesting. I was assuming that this was a hardware issue but you guys seem to think otherwise. I could care less as long as there a way to get the damn phone to work. I really want this phone!!!
ditto on the LOStKernal.
i used to have LOS daily about 8 times. now i havent had it in a week and i flashed it in a week.

Yeah, it's not hardware. The way the bug pops up is extremely circumstantial...so much so that we still don't know the parameters of the circumstance that triggers the bug. Having a low signal seems to have something to do with it but it has also occurred with full signal...but software changes seem to have a gigantic impact on it. I haven't seen one in weeks. I dunno....
I wouldn't be too concerned. I have the phone and I'm not.
...and it is a pretty bad-ass phone. If you are already a Sprint subscriber you'll love it, especially coming from the Evo4G.
I have never had LOS.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I'm thinking this is definitely software related, I personally didn't have a LOS problem until I started flashing kernels.Even on the Loskernel I was experiencing several LOS a day, flashed back to stock rom/kernel and haven't had a problem. From what I have experienced, Los seems to correlate with the phone roaming off of the sprint network and unable to connect back.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Its software. I haven't had LOS since the day the phone came out.

Its a modem issue the kernel can only help so much. Samsung will be releasing a new modem.bin when they give us the maintenance update.
No it's a sprint problem my phone is fully flashed to ntelos and I have been trying to get los since monday even trying different kernels and roms I just cant produce los
Sent from my Galaxy S2 using Tapatalk
I've seen a couple posts saying the LoS issue is related to roaming off/on the Sprint network...this may be true to a certain extent but I sit 5 feet from an Airave and I'll get LoS a few times a day when at home. Happens just as often if not more when I'm out and about.
On a more related note, OP: this phone is great and they will fix the phone somehow or make good on it. If for some reason they haven't solved the problem and you are over the 14-30 days (maybe even waaaayyyy past that...months!) then they will take the phone back. If you can't get them to give you a free Photon or basically whatever you want, then you are a pushover! Just have to start making a papertrail for your issue, that is all really.
Would that necessarily rule out that the air wave itself is not roaming or losing/regaining signal throughout the day affecting your phone?

Its not a Sprint issue.
Its a Samsung issue.
That's been confirmed by developers.

I have an Airave in my house and do not have any connectivity issues at all to it. I am also using a phone that has not been rooted and have yet to get an LOS either.
My point is that if the air wave is losing connectivity at all, then your phone is as well forcing it to roam
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I never got LOS until I started flashing(about 3 days )
I was getting once per day utill the Lost kernel came along, now I've only had 1 LOS in the 10 days or so since the kernel has been out. I definitely believe it's software or modem related.
Bad ass phone nonetheless...dont hesitate!
Love this phone. Got it launch day and have never experienced a single LOS. I've never tried to root it or install a custom kernel.
Stock rom and not rooted, never had LOS.
I only have had LOS when I installed a ROM a long time ago.. Have had no problems on stock rom, stock kernel, rooted

[GPS issue] Slow to no GPS... Ready to give up.. Maybe

Ever since flashing to JB my GPS is not working properly anymore...even tried going back to stock ICS and still no go. I know this is a known issue apparently, I've done plenty of research, tried a few fixes and nothing.
I really like this phone, but I also need a reliable GPS.
On CM10 I get a blinking icon and if I'm lucky get a lock after a minute, if not it will just blink forever.
On maddoggin I get no blinking icon at all and maybe get a lock after a reboot, otherwise nothing. On other ROMs it's pretty much the same thing. Before all this I was getting 3-4 second locks indoors.
Something is definitely wrong with it, missing files, wrong files , who knows...
Anybody have some suggestions on what to try? I'll give to this weekend, if I can't find a fix I'll just buy a different phone at this point.....
TIA!

Where would I get JB factory images at? So far the only roms I've flashed are Maddoggin's, CM10 JellyBro, and BlackBean.
Thanks
AFAIK there are no Google factory inmages for the Sprint GN
Ah yes, I forgot. Google dropped support. How about suggestion #2 then (logcat)?
Same problem for me on gnex gsm tmobile. Gps was perfect before 4.1.1 now it has gotten pretty unreliable I thought it was that solar flare thing a few weeks ago but I'm still having the problem.

I did the ota update to JB and also had slow locks (like up to a minute, not as bad as some complained about). Different ROMs were about the same, until rasbean. Now my GPS performs as it did on ICS, coincidence? Perhaps. I may never know as I'm liable to stay on rasbean for a long long time.

Maybe detective hardware? Go back to stop and take it to a repair store.
I finally caught the problem: GSM carrier (AT&T in my case)!
Actually all remedies barely work on my GSM Galaxy Nexus ordered from play store. I even flashed back to 4.1.2 factory image and it did not help either. If you are like me, simply take the SIM card out and see if it locates much faster (<1min for first lock and <10s thereon).
In terms of GPS first lock, "No SIM" better than "with SIM but airplane mode" better than "phone signal on". In some locations (e.g. Centre PA) GSM signal does not bother that much but in some other locations (e.g. Baltimore MD; Cape Cod, MA) the GSM signal is a real killer.
There is definitely some kernel/baseband problem! I am just providing as much information as I can to assist professional troubleshooting to this annoying problem.

Verizon 4.0.4/4.0.5 Radio intermittent signal loss

I am on my sixth nexus. I am running Vicious's 4.1.1 rom rooted and not running any weird power saving apps and turning off my wifi when not at home. The radio signal either turns off completely for a few seconds or cannot connect to data services constantly when trying to use the phone. There is nothing I am doing that creates this problem consistently. It is random. Sometimes i can make a call and talk for an hour and have no problems sometimes i can be in the same area and make a call and it continually drops the call after a few seconds to a few minutes. 4g rarely works though it shows its connected. I am running what i believe to be the latest radio for verizon I515.10V.FC04/I515.FC05. I am open to suggestions on radio's app's anything to get this corrected. I even tried going back to stock and letting Verizon update the phones to start and the problem still persists. i travel a lot and it does not seem to do it in any area more than another. but It has become a constant nu sense when talking to my customers on the phone. or trying to connect to data services. PLEASE HELP

"Ghost Touch" Issues

Idk if some of you have heard about the "ghost touch" thing where sometimes when you turn on the screen it'd be like someone was pushing on some of your capacitive buttons and you wouldn't be able to touch or do anything on the screen. Turning off the screen for a couple seconds and turning it on again helps alleviate the problem for me.
How common of a problem is this? It seems that this never used to happen until ICS came around. Is it due to software or hardware like a bad digitizer? Is this something that I should be worried about hardware wise because I'm planning on hanging onto this phone for at least another 6 months and warranty's going to be up soon in a week or two. I'm using The Goodness ROM and agat's kernel if that matters at all. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello. Thank you for all the replies. So overall, is this something that I should be worried about concerning the longevity of my phone? It happens quite often now like maybe 5 times a day when it used to be only once in a long while.

After trying to figure out what nearby was causing the RF intererence so I could eliminate it, I found this thread which explains that the interference originates in the phones 3G radio, not the environment. I just recently started having this problem, and from reading that thread, I think I didn't notice it before only because I was using a kernel with a fix integrated. So if you are having this problem and don't want to do surgery on your phone, maybe try to find a kernel with the software patch.

This has been happening like crazy lately, ever since Hurricane Sandy and also since running the FK09 JB leak. The Sprint signal in my area went from bad to garbage since the hurricane, not sure if the JB leak is also adding to it or not.
It is so annoying I am tempted to actually buy a different phone even though I love the E4GT.

Agreed Sprint screwed NJ hard as AT&T and Verizon restored services within a week...
On a side note, AT&T's LTE was up and running within 48 hours...Dunno about Verizon cause most of my friends have iPhone's with them. But I was roaming on Verizon full bars the whole time. But guess what happened when I tried to make a call? "Welcome to Verizon, please have a phone card or credit card at handy to make a call". I have roaming under my plan and I would like to use it...especially not crapping out in emergencies.

Zero Bars in my House

Hi guys,
My Galaxy Nexus running stock 4.2.2 started getting zero bars reception in my house in about mid December. At the time, I hadn't done anything different to it, so I assumed it would go away over time, so I focused on my final exams instead. Flash forward to today, it's been months since I have had reception on my phone. This is a really big problem for me, as I can't even take phone calls or send/receive texts. I've been using Rogers One Number and Whatsapp through WiFi to get by, and it sucks.
My brother has the same phone, and I helped him flash the Google stock ROM, so hes running same everything as me. I've tried plugging his Sim into mine and my phone still gets zero bars (his is fine). I've tried plugging my Sim into an old Samsung dumbphone, and it was fine. I don't remember if I tried my brothers phone... I will if I have to.
I had no problems for the months I owned the phone leading to December (since about March last year). I've tried scouring the forums for solutions, but I get flooded with Verizon reception problems... I'm in Canada on Rogers, and had my phone working well until December, so it's not the right problem.
According to the secret menu, it says I have -107dBm (fluctuating to -111dBm within the typing of this message), 1 asu. I have no idea what that means, but I see everyone always posting this with reception issues. I've tried doing a backup and a factory reset, with no results. I've tried flashing to stock 4.1 with no results. This leads me to believe it's a hardware issue, so I tried opening it up to see if the antenna was loose; it was not.
Please tell me what kind of additional information I need to provide for you guys to try to help me. Am I supposed to try flashing a new radio? Which am I supposed to use if I'm in Vancouver, BC on Rogers?
I found this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163312&page=), with a magical solution of waiting the next day. Unfortunately, I've been waiting for months.
Regards,
Eddy.

There was also this incident that happened last year that I posted about, but it quickly went away after the "squeeze" solution. I've tried the squeeze solution since then, and even opening it up to check the antenna with no results.

Sounds like a hardware issue. If its within warranty, have it replaced or do an insurance claim if you have it.

Unfortunately, I have neither options, as I purchased it new through Craigslist. I'm capable of opening it up, and would be happy to replace parts... does anyone know where I can find out what parts I would need in such a scenario as well as where I could purchase?
