sprint store replacing evo lte with gs3 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

ok ive had my evo since september the phone was practiclay disco'd out the door according to the rep in the store i went in with some issues with the wifi and lte connectivity and they said they would just replace it with a gs3 since there is a 2-3 week waiting list for refurbished evo ltes
im just wondering what apps and launchers are going to get me a sense like experience since almost all of my last 5 phones have been htc

MOAR ROM is great. Won't give you the sense experience your looking for but will give you great battery life smoothness and you can morph the looks pretty much any way you like. Welcome to the gs3 forums, great people here.

Well, I know that there are a lot of devs working on a Sense port. So keep your eyes on the Dev section, and to be honest, Touchwiz grows on you after a while
Sent from my PG06100

I would consider Goodness ROM with the sense theme and lockscreen. Probably about as close as you'll get until someone completes a port.
Otherwise, run any of the great kernels out (I love MOAR), switch to the preinstalled sense lockscreen and use morphology options to get a more sense-like look.
I agree with others. I came from an Evo LTE and touchwiz is actually pretty slick overall. Only thing I miss from the evo is the stock messaging app and live wallpaper of weather. Otherwise, I am pretty sure I like the GS3 more in every other way.

Goodness is one of my personal favorites.

Just use Nova prime and just move on from sense.

You can get a really close to Sense experience using GoLauncher, and any number of Sense Themes that are available. This includes the widgets. You can easily complete the look with several different Sense Lockscreens. But that being said, Touch Wiz does grow on you really quick. This from an admitted HTC fan . The SGS3 has made me a Samsung Fan . Big time.

This is now a thread delegated to ROM owners/fans recommending their own ROM
Good job.

lol dont mind on my evo i was running meanrom until lte and wifi issues, that i thought were related to the rom but not, so i went back to stock and now im waiting on them to get my phone in stock hopefully today or monday

I was a pretty big HTC fan, until the locked boot loader on the 3D. If you're still getting the S3 as a replacement, I think you'll be happy. As far as finding a ROM you like, many have been suggested, flash them all! The EVO LTE has a locked boot, right? Plug it in, fastboot, flash... That whole deal? Not on this one, it is the way it should be. Hope you enjoy it.

I agree, I switched from HTC to the galaxy s3. Incredibly easy to root, especially compared to htc. I'm pretty happy with the s3.

I am also a huge fan of HTC too, but I do not agree fully. I love my s3 and its stock layout is okay, but HTC is still dominate with sense to me. Touchwiz hasn't really grown on me. Its nice, I just wish the icons weren't so.. I dunno. Just not the best look.

I've been a major HTC for a past few years or so. The LTE issues were device related. Not the ROMs, just like u said . Hell, even Sprint and HTC announced it themselves at the very beginning lol. I gave up my EVO and Team Venom to get the GS3. Can happily say I don't regret it. I haven't contributed very much since then, but we got a ton of awesome Devs here.

I actually prefer TW to Sense, and I was a huge supporter of HTC, last week my EVO lte screen started acting whack, returned it to BB and since they didnt have any EVO's left they gave me a GSIII to replace it and I couldnt be happier! I was kinda sour on Sammy after my experience with my Epic Touch, but I gotta say they knocked it clear outta the park with the GSIII :good: and rooting HTC devices is a pain, the Samsung devices are soooooo easy

I agree with the above. The epic pissed me off and loved my og evo; but locked bootloaders are not my cup of tea and I enjoy freedom that samsung easily made for us

got my gs3 today got it rooted in less than 10 min most of that download time lol
man im loving this phone it is a lot smoother than my evo lte

And you don't have to make your phone S-Off
I did go through sense denial. But eventually I downloaded apex (or nova) launcher and that made it go away. Now if i can just get my recent buttons icon back and switch the back and menu button...

yeah i keep hitting the menu button trying to go home lol

LOL I used to do that too when I switched from the Evo lte to the sgs3. I kinda actually miss the evo though although the galaxy gets way better reception.

[Q] I'm getting that feeling again.

This is NOT a Thread that I'm selling my Epic in, I need help deciding whether to keep my Epic or not. I want to change my Epic for an Evo 4G/BlackBerry. I like it and all, but the Epic just doesn't have enough development. I'd have to either get the Evo and Flash my phone EVERYday like I used to with my G1, or get a BlackBerry Bold 9650 and not Flash it at all. the Evo is a nice phone, it has all features working on CM7 which is a big plus for me, it's always up-to-date with MIUI, and was the phone I was going to get first, but it was sold out and I was impatient and I obviously regret it. Or, I could get a BlackBerry. Their much more simple and would meet my standards, but I'm afraid of Android-Withdrawal, but I could take it to OS6 and that looks cool.
So, what does everyone here think. Should I keep the Epic, let the price go down with more use, and wait to see what happens? Should I trade it in and get some cash and buy an Evo in order to fill my flashing addictions? Or should I sell it and buy a BlackBerry Tour2 9650 so that I can't Flash anymore, but have a pretty good phone? And the final option, should I just keep my Epic 4G, and live with it, and hope for the best?
Drop the epic and get an EVO lots of Rome to flash . Unless u Want to wait till September for the gingerbread update . Then the flashing begins for epic.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Keep the epic...CM7 will be out when official gingerbread in released!
I don't know man. September is a few months away, and that IF we get GingerBread then. And even though, we'll have CM7 ROMs from 3 different developers, a few AOSP from a few different developers, and maybe 2 MIUI ROMs. I wonder if we'll ever have Sense or a Port of maybe the Droid3? Or LG Optimus 2X? I don't think we have enough people.
Someone is already working on a sense port, the same dev that's working on miui. And we have a cm7 alpha 4. We need gingerbread source code to help move us along.

I came from a BB bold 9700. I did some beta testing for OS 6 on it. It was very nice but that is all the tinkering you could do with it was put a leak version of the OS or beta test. So I would say you have already commented on "flash withdrawal" so BB will be nice for about a month then you will be bored with it. One of the reasons I got the Epic was because of the keyboard coming from a BB and the screen size. My other options were the Intercept (which my son has) or the Shift but again the screen sold me on the Epic. I didn't even look to root or custom ROMS for at least 2 months after I bought it. But once you start it is hard to go back.
Hi my name is John and I am a flashaholic...LOL
Look up the ORD Thread in the Off-Topic. That's us. That Thread was my idea btw.
And I guess I'll stay. I guessssss...
Sounds like you've already made up your mind and are just looking for someone to talk you out of it... I carry a crackberry and my epic. The crackberry is free and I can do what I want with it, but I still keep an android that costs me ~40 bux a month and has horrific cell coverage most of the time just because it's an Android and the berry sucks for anything other than email.
I don't know much about the Evo other than it's large development base, crappy screen and lack of keyboard. If flashing a new ROM everyday is your goal, then get the Evo and live with the lackluster video performance and on screen keyboards.
If the only reason you're ditching the Epic is due to lack of development, then develop something...
I forgot to mention that the Epic's keyboard sucks and I barley use it. If at all. And I can't develop. My friends will think differently of me. Lol jk, I'm too lazy and I don't have the time. All these devs are high ballers. I wouldn't compare. They wouldn't take me as seriously.

I mean sure EvO has more roms but how many do you really need. My sister has an EVO and I read thru the EVO section and concluded only 4-5 roms are actually worth trying Synergy-Kingdom, MIkG, MIUI, CM7 or Gingerdeck and thats about it...The last three we will hopefully get once GB is released.

Hi John!
There totally should be an AFA (Android flashers Anon) cause I'd be in it.
I've only had the Epic for a couple months, but I wouldn't trade it for any of the other phones available for Sprint right now. It's fast, great hardware, and has a full keyboard. I use a handful of other devices for work, and my Epic is the best by far. (my Galaxy Tab is a close 2nd) It feels weird not having some new rom/customization come out every couple weeks or days on the Epic, but I've adapted to a slower dev cycle that I was used to. And honestly, the only thing keeping me from running one of the GB leaks is the lack of a custom kernel to fix the hw keyboard lag. So until there's something that feels and works as good or better than my Epic, I'll be hanging on to it for dear life..
No offense but hopefully sucks.....especially if u upgrade yearly.....the good thing I learned my lesson and not going through that again.
But again that's just me.

Fascinate to DInc2-good idea?

So here's my story. I have the fascinate now, got it when it came out & have another year to go to upgrade. The froyo update has created pretty significant missed call issues that vzw is addressing by offering a switch to the DInc2 or the X2. My wife has the Dinc1 & I had the eris before so I'm familiar with sense ui. How does this phone compare to them or to the X2? I'm looking for input before I make my choice.

I cannot speak for the DX2, but I for one love my DInc2. It's the perfect size, and has the perfect feel for the hand. The processor is lightning quick; keep in mind that this is the next generation Snapdragon. Even though it's not Dual Core, it's still really fast!
You get a great camera, still a good screen, and a front facing camera which you do not have on the DX2. The DX2 has a qHD display, but from what I've heard, and this is hearsay and opinion, it's not that great. I don't like Blur, and I came from a Stock Android OG Droid, so Sense was the better choice for me.
Battery life isn't the best I've seen, but it's also not the worst. Depends on usage, but I can get through most of the day with it. Gingerbread helps here, and also makes the phone even faster than it was with Froyo. I would recommend the DInc2. Good luck!
i came from the fascinate, as did my wife, and i can tell you we're absolutely happy with the dinc2. i'm on CM7 nightly, she's running gingersense (she doesn't know that, she thinks she's full stock. shhhh.) it's so much better than the fascinate in every way.
if you liked the fascinate's screen, then the DX2 won't be good enough. the incredible 2's screen is pretty comparable.
Bro as much as I loved my fascinate, I had the same issues with missed calls. Took 3 replacements to finally get offered something else. Dinc2 or the x2. I'm not a fan of the x's so I chose the dinc 2. This phone literally ****s on the fassy. I have not experienced any bugs. Now that it's rootable it's even more beast. The screen isn't super amoled . But, it looks great. The difference in screens really seems to be black. It looked better on the fassy but every other color looks better on dinc 2
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk
I'm in the same boat as everyone here....I had the fassy and couldn't handle the missed calls so when I called it was this or the droid x (not x2) for free or I could upgrade early and sign a new 2yr contact. which I thought about cuz I too have a yr left on my current contact. (really thought I wanted the droid charge) I have never been happier that I picked the inc 2.
When I first started looking into the support for this phone I thought I made a mistake as it seemed like there was none and as you know the fascinate community was full of ppl and devs. But now that we have root this is by far the best phone out (imo) and has plenty of amazing devs who have really brought out its potentially.
Semper Primus
My wife has the fassy an I have the dinc2. nothing an no rom can fix the fassy. Its a awesome screen but its terrible other than that. I'm trying to get her on a dinc2.

What will you retire your DInc for?

So idk how many of you are like me and follow popular android blogs like Droid-life or Android Central, but lately there has been a crazy amount of discussion about all these new super phones that are coming out in the next few months. And also if you are like me, then your contract is going to be up around the holiday season or a little after because that is 20 months after our phone was released.
I am just trying to get a little discussion going about what you think your next phone will be, you can answer my poll and/or just talk about what you are looking for in your next phone. Going for a 4.3in screen? Is 4.5in too big? Must be LTE? Needs HD (720p+) screen? Sticking with HTC? Liking the idea of Google/Moto merger? Ice Cream Sandwich or nothing? Will the next Nexus phone come to Verizon? These are just some of the questions that I am curious about and I'm sure that others are too. Happy discussion!
I love htc phones, dont ask me why. I also love sense, so sonething dual core, 4g capable, sense 3.0 or whatever is newest. Rootable. Has to be verizon, right now i wouldnt change.
If ive helped you, please hit the damn thanks button!
I came from the Eris (got my Inc on eBay), so my contract is actually up next week. I'm probably going to get the Vigor if it has everything that is rumored and actually comes out close to that date. I don't want wait til next year.

Sign me up for a box of these lol! I am usually an HTC man myself, but I think my next phone is going to be moto (unless the Nexus ACTUALLY comes to Verizon). I know I'll probably get some **** for this, but I actually like the new Blur. My biggest problem with HTC is the dock on their phones: it only has 3 spaces, you can't change what they are, and one is wasted on the "personalize" menu which there are like 3 other ways to get to. New Blur lets you customize 3 dock spaces and it just seems more functional. But time will tell.

You can use an alternate launcher or custom rom, unless you're really attatched to sense widgets. I just don't think I'd select a phone based on the manufacturer skin's dock.
I'm intrigued by the possibility of the nexus coming to Verizon but I'm not getting my hopes up. At this point, what's important to me for my next phone to have is LTE, nice screen (preferably SAMOLED), and CM7/MIUI support (this would imply an unlockable bootloader). I wouldn't personally be one to buy a phone first day, I'd prefer to wait and see what issues it has and what the development community is like.
Probably Nexus Prime.

Yeah don't get me wrong, I have been an avid launcher pro user for almost a year. But I would love to be able to just use to stock launcher and just about any one would be usable for me besides sense. And yes being able to unlock it is extremely important to me too, so new HTC phones are looking good for that reason. I am hoping that the Droid HD will follow in the footsteps of the OG.

We can only hope so, if that comes to Verizon it will be a glorious day.
Whatever has an AMOLED screen. Its looking like it'll be a Nokia ClearBlack running WP7 or some sort of Samsung Nexus kinda thing. I will certainly miss HTC though when I go!
I know the SLCD's aren't THAT different, but everyone is nitpicky about something and the ever so slight difference just happens to be something that gets to me horribly. I have been intrigued by WP7 for a long time anyways, and I'm sure it will be even more polished by the time I'm ready to peace out the Dinc.
Sense is awesome, and most (non-dev everyday) people I know who have a post-Nexus One HTC phone are in love with it, while there seems to be a large amount of "how come mine doesn't have that" coming from (non-dev everyday) people with other Android devices. I figure the positive feedback I see with WP7 and Nokias recent hardware will give me a solid alternative in 10 months when its time to upgrade.

You can't install any launcher on a Sense ROM. And ADW can kiss my ass for 6 or 7 bucks to do a fraction of what Sense does. I'd suggest hunting down one of the patches that allows you to remap those dock buttons. Something like Myn's Rosie or use a rom that remaps them. I thought pretty much all custom Sense ROMs allowed remapping of 2, if not all the buttons.

US Cellular? I'm not sure how much of what they say I'd believe. For those who don't know, they're a CDMA carrier which has strongholds in Chicago and many areas of West Virginia.
Not too terribly long ago before the introduction of EVDO Rev.A, USC operated a CDMA network that both Alltel and Verizon used under an interoperability agreement. The problem was US Cellular didn't use standard 1xRTT or EVDO and Alltel and Verizon devices couldn't authenticate on their network. They were possibly THE LAST adopter of EVDO Rev.0 and as of last year still hadn't fully deployed EVDO Rev.A across their network. It was only in the last year and half they got their network compliant with the standards Alltel and Verizon use across IL, and still their coverage is horrible.
In short, I'd be pretty skeptical about any claims they make about LTE until I actually saw proof.
Nokia - Windows Phone. That is assuming Big Red gets a high end one (latest net rumors say they are). Who knows.
If they don't and there is no talk of it coming... I may look into the Nexus Prime if it's on Verizon. Like somebody else said, It's got to be AMOLED.
If it isn't.... I'll be checking out Sprint.
Nothing worth changing for yet

However, in reality, I will probably go for the phone that has the best battery life be that a Samsung or an HTC phone - I'm not wild about Motorola phones.
I am so tired of the crappy battery life on my DInc.
I'm still not sure which phone I'm going to go for, I could upgrade at any moment but I think I'm going to wait. I originally had an OG droid and I loved the sturdyness of Moto's build quality, but I love the lightness and the look of sense on the Incredible.
One thing is for sure I need 4G, at least dual core, 1GB+ RAM, still haven't decided on screen size yet (at least 4"+).
I think I'm going to wait until ICS drops since I'm already in debt up to my earlobes  Buying the Transformer didn't help that.

[Q] Will Epic 4G Touch get a Sense ROM?

I'm torn between three upgrade options: Getting an Evo 3D, getting an E4GT, or staying with my old Hero until something new comes out. I'm a big fan of HTC Sense, especially the latest version. I dislike TouchWiz. A lot.
What I'd like to know is, in the opinions of those who own an E4GT and are more familiar with the rooting scene, or who owned an original SGS, do you think there will be a working Sense ROM put out for the Epic Touch?
I realize your opinions are not prophetic, I just want your opinion; I do know how to use search, and I did, but getting knowledgeable people's forecasts based on their experiences with other non-Sense phones, and whether they got Sense ROMs/how long it took seems like a good idea. I'm hoping it will help others as well.
Please don't give answers like "Use LauncherPro! it's gr8!". Stick to answering the question if at all possible.
TIA!

In short, no. HTC owns Sense.
.....
Supposedly some one in the gs2 or nexus s forum was trying to port a sense rom but don't know id they ever got most things working..sense is much harder to port to non htc phone ...

What do you hate about touchwiz. This should be fun

Download Launcher Pro, and mod it to look like Sense. Get the Plus version and you'll get semi-identical widgets.

Thats your best bet probably.
I would like to see the Sense calendar and Dialer ported over.
Touchwiz is a lot better on this phone thanks it used to be. I used launcher pro on my original epic cause I hated touchwiz but I love it on the sgsii

I'll feel ya, I too was a major sense fanboy! I LOVED sense!! I've had EVERY Sprint phone that had sense. I decided it was time for a change from HTC,and I will tell you I'm NOT looking back and DON'T regret it ONE BIT! This phone is simply AMAZING!!!
This phone will never see a functional sense rom unless HTC releases their source code, which will not happen. I also do believe no phone has had a functional Sense ROM that wasn't an HTC device.
Thanks for all the replies - not quite used to such an active forum, the Hero is dying
I have seen partially functioning Sense ROMs on a few phones, like the original Epic. I'm wasn't entirely sure how much they had functioning - apparently not a lot.
As far as Touchwiz goes, I have heard/seen that the version on the Epic Touch is much better than before. In the past, I didn't like the simplistic style, the color scheme (especially the notifications bar), and the functionality. It would seem that this version, with all its benefits, might make it more worthwhile than AOSP. However, I still love Sense - its elegance combined with its ease of use, with (best of all) the added functionality (the dialer, the contact linking, the widgets - all beautiful yet extra-functional).
For that reason, I'm thinking of going to the Evo 3D. Any serious reason not to? I just don't see the sense (excuse the pun) in limiting my ROM options.
I would say just go play with both of them for about an hour .... I have both and my 6 yo son loves my 3d its his angry birds and other games boy ..... Ha ha ..... I would love the devs over there to come to this phone but we are getting cyanogen so I won't really care

I like sense... but I know HTC owns that. I am not a fan of touch wiz really.
I don't like the process to merge contacts. My EVO 3D did an amazing job and matching them and letting me merge all of them at one.
I HATE the phone app. Making a call take to many steps, and when you are on a call and exit to the home screen, the process of getting back to the active call is a pain. The drop down menu is not always responsive. I can't tell you how many times I have left a voice mail for someone and left 8 seconds of dead air on it at the end trying to get the phone app you open again JUST so I could end a call.

The process to make a call is very simple.
1. Open Contacts
2. Locate Contact
3. Swipe from left to right on contact
4. BAM you made a call
But it doesn't look as pretty...
Making the call is not really the issue, it's gong back to the call in progress when you are on it that is not as easy as it should be.

Back when i was on the captivate, there were rumors that some dev was trying to port sense. never happened that i know of. i use adw. i've used launcher pro, but adw works better for me. honestly the only thing i didnt like about the new touchwiz was that you can't do landscape on the homescreen. the biggest reasons i went for the e4gt were the screen and the speed. the e4gt kicks the pants off the evo 3d in both categories. the screen is by far the best screen i've seen. phone or otherwise. and its speedy enough i havent bothered to root and rom. which is weird considering my cappy was rooted 4 hrs out of the box and rommed after 8. and my cappy was my first android phone. if your into pretty, i would suggest the e4gt. my coworkers have the evo 3d. with adw and a couple of themes, my phone is much nicer looking. as for the dialer and contacts list, i think there are a couple of replacement ones. i use chomp for my sms. it has the neat little motion controlls that sense does. lockscreen kinda sucks compared to the new sense. but eh, you win some you lose some. hope i helped!

Really?
Swipe notification bar down.
Touch Phone Icon.
That doesn't seem all that difficult or complicated to me...

Same here!

Hiya!

I'm thinking about making the switch to the SG3 in the near future (I'm past due for my upgrade) and want to start researching everything I can about the phone.
I know rooting is a breeze with Odin, but I'm looking for info on what I should keep on hand, like drivers, etc. Looks like CWM is the best recovery?? Or no?
How's the dev'ing going with this phone?
BTW, as much as I learned about and contributed to the Evo community, I'm hoping to make a good positive impact here, too, if and when I do make the switch
I like twrp recovery. Odin will be your best friend. If your phone is soft bricked and you have no nandroids, you can go back to stock. It's awesome.
Also - Of sprints current phone selection this phone is hands down the best in terms of everything in general (mostly lte connectivity.)
Make sure that your area has Sprint LTE coverage, as the 3G performance is pretty bad and the SGS3 does not support WIMAX. That's been the only real headache I've seen from people making the change. I'm in Atlanta, 4G LTE coverage is pretty good and I couldn't be happier with my phone!

Not sure about LTE here, but Sprint never did get us 4G in Peoria.
I remember form my Moment that the radios in Samsung phones were just not good. Hopefully, this has changed in the last 2 years
TWRP is a great recovery option. 3G sucks. 4G is good when I can connect. I mostly use wireless though.

There are some awesome dev's and themers working on this phone ... Clark44, Phantom hacker, Strong Steve, and Myn (who you probably know from having an Evo) all have great ROMs out. DazednConfused and Josh Beach, among others, have amazingly themed ROM's. There are also some close to 100% working AOSP ROMs out as well. So, lots of options.
Yeah aosp is booming the nightlies have been stable more then a month

+1 to ^^ and would love to see you on a GS3 you have been a great asset to the OG EVO. Your guide helped me many times
@casmi, thanks!
I have a few friends (online) trying to convince me to go Evo LTE, but I have just lost so much faith in HTC, especially in light of drivers never being released for ICS/JB, the concerted effort to lock down Hboot, etc...

I agree, HTC has been making things more and more difficult even though they try to seem otherwise. The GS3 was my first Samsung to root and it was so easy, I was ready to have to jump through hoops like the EVO. I was pleasantly suprised.
The development on the GS3 seems good and I'm sure will only continue to grow. I have a feeling it may be like the EVO as it will be around for a long time with continued development. Good luck in your search for your next phone

I'm pretty sure you remember scottspa or something like that. You can ask his opinion of the LTE EVO. He doesn't seem thrilled
"Pro:being to fully S-off bootlaoder. And then you can flash radios forward and backward. With elo lte, if you downgrade firmware,...hard brick. You look at this phone kinda sideways and it will hard brick (buy a GSIII) (And believe me, that hurts to say)
via xda premium on my AOKP'd Evo LTE"
found his quote
To answer your question, twrp 2.2.2.0 (lose your past thoughts from the evo) and aokp. There is also a miui for you too.
Screw HTC

Whats up HipKat. Im in the same boat as you. Im past due for an upgrade and have been thinking long n hard(yes i said LONG N HARD) about which phone i want. I have friends that got the EVO LTE and love it, but they dont have the root and flash bug as i do. I have been scouring both forums on here looking for opinions. I have also been watching reviews online to see what i can come up with. Every onnline review i watch puts the SGS3 slightly above the EVO LTE. I think im leaning this way, hope to see you here as well. You have given me some good guidance to rooting and flashing and your guide to everything rooting in the OG EVO forum was my most visited thread!
I to came from an og evo, bought the evo lte and returned it for the s3, don't regret it one bit! Rooting much easier on the s3, and if u do brick, it seems so easy to fix. Another thing is updates, Samsung has been advertising this phone so much, for them not to push out jellybean asap, would be a failure. Just my 2 cents

Past experience with Samsung was one reason I was leery of this device. It seems that in the past(before the days of Android) i had Samsung devices and they seemed to stop support for them prematurely. I guess with the popularity of these new devices that would be a little tougher to do.
I made the jump from OG Evo. It was a hard decision but after seeing a friend's Evo LTE sense just seemed tired to me. I didn't even feel the need to root SIII until recently. You won't be disappointed. IMHO, the only advantage of the evo is screen brightness in daylight. If you work outdoors you may want to compare the two and see.

Yep, old SDX crew.
I'll have to go over there and see how much dev work SDX is doing on the SG3

I been watching reviews too, plus Wirefly has the 16gb SG3 for 100 bucks now

I do work outside, but the OG EVO is the same way and I get by with it just fine.
