Hiya! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm thinking about making the switch to the SG3 in the near future (I'm past due for my upgrade) and want to start researching everything I can about the phone.
I know rooting is a breeze with Odin, but I'm looking for info on what I should keep on hand, like drivers, etc. Looks like CWM is the best recovery?? Or no?
How's the dev'ing going with this phone?
BTW, as much as I learned about and contributed to the Evo community, I'm hoping to make a good positive impact here, too, if and when I do make the switch

I like twrp recovery. Odin will be your best friend. If your phone is soft bricked and you have no nandroids, you can go back to stock. It's awesome.
Also - Of sprints current phone selection this phone is hands down the best in terms of everything in general (mostly lte connectivity.)

Make sure that your area has Sprint LTE coverage, as the 3G performance is pretty bad and the SGS3 does not support WIMAX. That's been the only real headache I've seen from people making the change. I'm in Atlanta, 4G LTE coverage is pretty good and I couldn't be happier with my phone!

Not sure about LTE here, but Sprint never did get us 4G in Peoria.
I remember form my Moment that the radios in Samsung phones were just not good. Hopefully, this has changed in the last 2 years

TWRP is a great recovery option. 3G sucks. 4G is good when I can connect. I mostly use wireless though.

There are some awesome dev's and themers working on this phone ... Clark44, Phantom hacker, Strong Steve, and Myn (who you probably know from having an Evo) all have great ROMs out. DazednConfused and Josh Beach, among others, have amazingly themed ROM's. There are also some close to 100% working AOSP ROMs out as well. So, lots of options.

Yeah aosp is booming the nightlies have been stable more then a month

+1 to ^^ and would love to see you on a GS3 you have been a great asset to the OG EVO. Your guide helped me many times

@casmi, thanks!
I have a few friends (online) trying to convince me to go Evo LTE, but I have just lost so much faith in HTC, especially in light of drivers never being released for ICS/JB, the concerted effort to lock down Hboot, etc...

I agree, HTC has been making things more and more difficult even though they try to seem otherwise. The GS3 was my first Samsung to root and it was so easy, I was ready to have to jump through hoops like the EVO. I was pleasantly suprised.
The development on the GS3 seems good and I'm sure will only continue to grow. I have a feeling it may be like the EVO as it will be around for a long time with continued development. Good luck in your search for your next phone

I'm pretty sure you remember scottspa or something like that. You can ask his opinion of the LTE EVO. He doesn't seem thrilled
"Pro:being to fully S-off bootlaoder. And then you can flash radios forward and backward. With elo lte, if you downgrade firmware,...hard brick. You look at this phone kinda sideways and it will hard brick (buy a GSIII) (And believe me, that hurts to say)
via xda premium on my AOKP'd Evo LTE"
found his quote
To answer your question, twrp 2.2.2.0 (lose your past thoughts from the evo) and aokp. There is also a miui for you too.

Whats up HipKat. Im in the same boat as you. Im past due for an upgrade and have been thinking long n hard(yes i said LONG N HARD) about which phone i want. I have friends that got the EVO LTE and love it, but they dont have the root and flash bug as i do. I have been scouring both forums on here looking for opinions. I have also been watching reviews online to see what i can come up with. Every onnline review i watch puts the SGS3 slightly above the EVO LTE. I think im leaning this way, hope to see you here as well. You have given me some good guidance to rooting and flashing and your guide to everything rooting in the OG EVO forum was my most visited thread!

I to came from an og evo, bought the evo lte and returned it for the s3, don't regret it one bit! Rooting much easier on the s3, and if u do brick, it seems so easy to fix. Another thing is updates, Samsung has been advertising this phone so much, for them not to push out jellybean asap, would be a failure. Just my 2 cents

Past experience with Samsung was one reason I was leery of this device. It seems that in the past(before the days of Android) i had Samsung devices and they seemed to stop support for them prematurely. I guess with the popularity of these new devices that would be a little tougher to do.

I made the jump from OG Evo. It was a hard decision but after seeing a friend's Evo LTE sense just seemed tired to me. I didn't even feel the need to root SIII until recently. You won't be disappointed. IMHO, the only advantage of the evo is screen brightness in daylight. If you work outdoors you may want to compare the two and see.

I'm going to wait a few weeks and see if there's any chance of a Sprint Nexus S. If not, I'll probably get it too. T-Mo is as cheap and even with a regular 3G radio under HSPA it's much faster than Sprint's 3G.
You'll all be back when the next version of the Evo comes out. ;-)

This is true. And the individual plans are pretty much the same now. Sprint needs a nexus. But the knight is coming soon. Its basically the G2 with sense.

My contract was exactly the same price. The only difference now is that I have 1500 "anytime" minutes as opposed to Sprint's unlimited mobile-to-mobile (which I can live without).

Swyped from Eva running Myn's RLS4!
If only it wasn't a Samsung, though having Google involved should speed up the response time on software fixes.
No thanks, its definately not a phone worth jumping carriers for...Actually I dont think that type of phone exists. Its a minor improvement to the epic, on a crap network. I aint missing out on anything, however there is a dual core 1.5 gz monster that is going to appear in a few weeks......(cough *Evo2*cough) and that will be exciting to see. Nexus S, not so much.
Yea, made by Samsung killed any excitement I had for this phone right away! I would like to play with one in person to check out the screen, the curve and of course 2.3
But the only phone that made me consider jumping carriers was the g2, even then I couldn't see it, but definitely not for anythign Samsung. I do hope being a google dev phone that it is still somewhat as successful as the n1 was... for the sake of androids future.

Congrats on the phone! Like many others said, it is unfortunate that it is a Samsung, hopefully Google backs it well. Unfortunately, with every Samsung phone I have ever had the hardware was complete crap, always had problems. AND I find it interesting that the phone came out today and there still is not a root method for the phone. I remember before the Evo even came out we had a root method. I think that this shows something for the developer in interest in the phone itself. Only time will tell and I may be proved wrong, but so far its not looking too good.

Hmmm not sure what your trying to say here. That is pretty interesting maybe I am wrong about support but in just black and white it seems like thats the case.
It is Samsung ... but it's also the only Samsung phone I'd even consider buying. Gotta agree though, got a good thing going with the Evo and Sprint is great around here - so it wouldn't make sense to switch phones ... let alone a carrier. And even if T-Mo speeds are faster on 3G than Sprints ... depending on coverage, that still doesn't excuse the lack of HSPA+ or no SD Card ... I dunno. I still hear people complaining about signal / reception with T-Mo. Just doesn't really make sense when you think of what is around the corner.
There will always be better phones. Always. But there will only be one (annual) true Google phone. That's it's main selling point for me. Everything Google (and a lot of top 3rd party developers) makes in 2011 will be based on the Nexus S.

Quick ?, getting evo soon.

Hey guys, I haven't seen some of these dev names in a while Toast, Damage, Ra ;-) Anyway, I'm replacing my Hero with an Evo in a few days just to get the upgrade. My question is: Since I've been working with the Hero for all this time, is the EVO pretty close? I've spent a few hours reading around and it looks pretty straight forward Better than the Epic which I really don't want to mess with. Looks like there's a questions out there too so I'll see if I can help when it comes in! Thanks guys.
And why is the "White" one so much cheaper? I'm gonna bundle it up like a football player anyway so does it really matter? Who doesn't wanna save some change?

Fairly straight forward. Use unrevoked for the 1 click root, then bam, backup then start flashing. All the roms are found in the development section; Personally I recommend CM7 with the Tiamat kernel.
Or wait a few months for evo 3d and less then that for nexus.

Yea the 3D has the 2 cameras in the back for stereoscopic 3D [how your eyes work]. And honestly the 3D is the current evo, with dual core processing, a slightly better gpu, and a bit more memory internally; I personally think you'll be okay getting the Evo now.

The EVO 3D has a bit more punch - but I'm completely happy with my EVO 4G. I used the Unrevoked's 1 click method, it was brain dead simple. Installed the HTSync, uninstalled it - then installed the hboot drivers, ran the unrevoked app, and in a few moments, I was rooted - w/o having to touch a thing.
A bit more punch yes but I see there's overclocked kernels out there. Who's dominating that one? I'm definitely going to try a sense rom (yea I know) and CM7. I owe it to Fresh, Toast and Damage to see what they've come up with for the EVO after all the work on the Hero.

Myn's warm 2.2 RLS5 is a great ROM, smooth as butter and easy on battery life. I keep trying new ROMS but always end up coming back to Myn's as my daily ROM. Everything works on it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback guys. It's nice to know I'm coming from AND going to a good forum. XDA is SUPER popular now! Brings the good and the bad though, I understand. I do my best not to answer dumb questions but some of these forums grow WAY too fast. The Epic forum is not friendly at all and it's keeping me from messing with the g/f's phone but you guys are great Thanks again and see you's all real soon. Hopefully by Tuesday.
The Evo is a year old. By the end of your contract it will be 3 and all of the devs will be long gone for newer phones.
Which sucks because the new phones coming out look like they're basically Evo's with dual processors. 3D isn't used widely enough to be worth caring about.
I got a 3D TV a few months ago and and yet to find some 3D porn.

Lol we have our fair share of grumpy people, but good on the whole. And thank you, welcome to the club.
I just realized I said "answer" but meant "ask" lol. This is why I don't mess with coding that much ;-) So, I got this "Ballistic Case" for the phone mostly because I have a "Bodyglove" for the Hero and I damn well know it'd be broken today without it. Yea, it'll make the phone a monster but it needs it. I'm in construction so it gets dropped every now and then. Is there anything else I should be thinking about before I put it to everyday use? Early adopters complained of battery life but I'm gonna assume that's been well addressed since then. Right now, I drop to about 55% on the Hero using CM7, current usage. I hope that circle battery mod I like so much is floating around here somewhere. I've got 20 gigs of Hero files LOL.

Upgrading sooner than I thought

I was planning on upgrading to a Dinc2 sometime this summer and dropping Verizon for Page Plus, but it looks like it will happen sooner than I expected. I dropped my Kin Twom today and the digitizer spiderwebed, so it is pretty worthless. It was a pretty good phone for the 2 years I had it, but I'll finally be getting something better.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi, I'm sure I'll be around these parts a lot once I find a good price on a Dinc 2.
Welcome! I was new to smartphones and Verizon recommended this phone. Great thing they did; i love it and the community that comes along with it.
Things are a little slower than they had been.. Waiting on a source to drop from HTC with Ice Cream Sandwich and then the newer roms like AOKP and nitsuj's rom plus the rom aero is working on.. they will then be 100% ... all are daily drivers as they stand now which is amazing considering there is nothing from HTC yet... So set back, relax, grab a beer, wine, liquor, smoke.. what ever you do and wait for the real fun to begin! WELCOME!!!!
Hate to s**t on everyone's pillows here, but the Inc2 is pretty old at this point, and I would recommend going for one of the newer devices if you can. That's just my thought. I always thought this phone was fast but after using any non Moto dual core device, this thing is, as I've said before, a sedated tortoise.

Well, compared to my Motorola dual core phone, this phone runs as fast as a mad, stabbed bull! So it is all relative. Plus the OP wants to quit Verizon and go to page plus. So may be he has a particular reason to choose dinc2, or budget constraints?

Or that the phone is fat, has terrible battery life and overheats. Ugh. Sense 4 isn't bad though. Pretty nice. That and 2.1 are cool. Everything else blows. Still like stock ICS better than both.
I think you'll be happy with the Dinc2. It's a good phone, and for a 3G phone, it would be my first choice (again) for a 3G phone. I've really enjoyed mine for almost a year now (hard to believe it's been that long). I had not had any intentions of upgrading anytime soon due to not having 4G in my area.
Well, due to my wife's job relocating her, I will know be living in a 4G area, so needless to say, I have a Galaxy Nexus on the way. The Dinc2 will still be staying in the family though, moving to the wife till the next upgrade is due. This will be her first smart phone. I think she will be really happy.
Enjoy your phone, and the community here, They're a great goup
I have had the Inc2 for almost a year as well. My mom has a charge. We have 4G EVERYWHERE where I live (about 45 min outside Boston) and someone on my plan has an unwanted upgrade that is coming in May so Gnexus time for me. Yay! The inc2 really is the best VZW 3g phone though hands down.
I just upgraded from an Eris to the Inc2. I love it and the price off Amazon was 1 cent. Plus I was able to keep my unlimited data plan. And from what I've heard 4g is still spotty around where I live.

Question for EVO owners

Hey guys. I just wanted to ask a question, I actually posted here sometime ago before I was even with Sprint. But to get straight to the point, in this time of the EVO being older now, what you think of it now? I was thinking about trading my phone for one..

Honestly the evo is a great phone but if i had a Nexus S 4g i wouldnt trade it for a evo. The nexus s 4g development is booming right now with ICS roms that are fully working. Also i believe the NS4G is better hardware wise as well
I've had my evo for close to 2 years now, and I still love it thanks to the awesome rom developers on this site. I'm not sure I would trade down for it if you have a newer, faster device, though.
Had my phone for 2 years. Would probably trade it for something else had it not been for the Deck Rom that I found on this forum. Phone still is very competitive with the rest of the models out there so for me unless i find a model that outperforms my phone by miles i'll stick to Evo. Plus with the new rom Deck Reloaded its better than ever (minus few minor things that need to be ironed out, rom was just released 2 days ago).

Then you would have to change your handle from evo4gnoob to nexus4gnoob. Lol

I've passed on "upgrading" from my Evo for 14 months, because nothing else was a good enough excuse to give it up. Still the overall best phone I've ever had, so far! I'm still keeping mine to play and hack around on long after my Evo 4G LTE is in my hands.
That's my plan too is to keep to OG Evo to use as a wifi device around the house when I want to listen podcasts and such that the wife doesn't want to hear. On that same note, can't wait for the LTE to drop.
I've had mine since the launch and I still love it. I also tend to stay with a given phone for long hauls; I had my Sony Erickson w810i for almost 4 years (I replaced it with the Evo).
I've had mine for almost 2 yrs. It's the best phone I've had simply for the modification factor. I like to tinker and try new things (ROMs, kernels, themes, etc.) w/o the lockdown hurdle I had with my iPhone. I wouldn't trade down for older tech though. I would think you could get one pretty cheap and not have to give up the newer phone you have.

[Q] What are you going to do with your OG Evo?

Now that the typical two year cycle is coming to a close for most of us Evo owners, I'm curious as to what you are going to do with it. I've thought about trading it in or selling it, but it has got to be one of my favorite gadgets/pieces of tech of all time. I don't think I'm ready to let go! Here's a few ideas I've had...
1-Wipe all the info off it, download GrooveIP, and give it to my daughter as a VOIP exclusive phone.
2-Do the same as above, but use it as a "home" phone.
3-Turn it into a media/gaming center (saw this on lifehacker the other day, great idea, here's the link: http://lifehacker.com/5915083/how-to-turn-your-android-into-an-awesome-portable-media-and-gaming-center
4-Finally figure out how to compile ROMs and test them on it.
5-Use it as a standalone GPS unit.
6-Turn it into a portable web server.
Any other ideas out there?
sell it on craigslist, and move on with good memories.
Keep it I still love my EVO and I am not ready to move on.
I stupidly traded mine in when I got my 3D. I still have all my original Sprint phones /except/ the best one ever. So I went on eBay last night and bought one, just to keep as a WiFi-only placeholder for the one that got away.

Run Deck's Reloaded and sit on my upgrade. Compared to the new phones, OUR EVO still pulls it wait. Also, no phone from Sprint has made the EVO obsolete . . . . . . . . . . yet.
I love my Evo, it does everything I need and more. I'll probably have it for another two years.
i'm just gonna keep it for now... the lte pisses me off. i would have gotten it if it wasn't for the battery. i guess i'm gonna wait til something interests me... but so far, until it breaks i'm gonna keep it
I usually post over in the Epic Touch forums as that is my main phone but recently I reclaimed my OG EVO from my ex (he bought an E4GT from me) and I had almost forgot how much I loved the phone. Don't get me wrong I seriously love my E4GT but it's nice to have my EVO back.
When I used it, before giving it to the ex, I knew nothing about rooting and so when the 3D came out I made the ultimate mistake of picking it up and getting rid of the OG EVO, a move I regretted on a daily basis. lol
Now that I have it back I want to do all the things with it I didn't before, like root, try out custom ROMs, etc. Just have to find a good starting place (okay rooting my Epic is like way simple, the root instructions I've found for the EVO seem a little confusing).
Anyway, this really is one of Sprint's best phones and now I can say I have both of Sprint's best phones.
using groove ip to turn it into a pure google voice phone
When I upgrade ill keep it and use it as a wifi media player type device. Plus Google maps is going to have maps offline so it would also make a good stand alone GPS.

I handed it off to the wifey so she can learn to use Android now instead of the Blackerry's that she has been using forever now.
I am messing around with the Epic 4G Touch now until LTE comes out and then I will get an LTE phone and the wife can have the E4GT or keep the Evo.
I've ordered my Galaxy S III already. I will either unroot / stock rom / CM7 the phone and give it to my dad. He's currently using an optimus S and hates it.

Stand alone GPS...I forgot about the offline maps thing. Great idea!
On another note, I finally got my LTEvo yesterday, and the first two calls I had dropped. It might have been because I was out on the field coaching in a lower coverage area, but my OG NEVER once dropped a call.
I'm gonna cover it with honey and make sweet love to it.

Depending on what firmware is in your ogevo is what makes it difficult or not, if your on 2.3.3 use revolutionary its really simple. If your on the latest which is 2.3.5 I believe, you have to HTC dev unlock bleh, or use tacoroot downgrade, flash the Eng boot loader, then upgrade to a 2.3.3 stock rom, then use revolutionary. Or at least that's what I did with mine. Its actually not as hard as you think if you follow the guides on the net :-D I could possibly help you if you need it, just throw me a pm
