Here's a little background, on Saturday I got a Galaxy S and it was screwed(No 3 button modes), I got another SGS and it had the same issue. Not to mention that its GPS was a bit screwed. Now I'm not being against SGS, its an awesome phone and honestly I'm a bit skeptical for switching after my 6 hour experience with the phone but I need another phone.
Now I'm thinking the next best option, HTC Desire. I need a ROMable phone with good community around it, the phone itself needs to be fast(Or with the ability to be fast), the touch needs to be good(Very important, I'm used to an iPod Touch, so I want a touch experience close to the iTouch, I mean snappy, quick and accurate). I know it has a relatively bad Multi-Touch but is it really that bad? Does it support 3-point or greater touches?
Also how is the gaming experience on it? I know it has a weaker GPU than Desire but is it absolutely bad?
Note : The comparison/experience need not be from stock ROM, it can be from any ROM as long as it is available in the wild.
EDIT : Also how is the screen if Desire when compared to SGS, iTouch 3G(iPhone 3GS)? I know its a bit smaller than SGS but would it make a difference?
Multi touch is a no, it's 2 point only I believe...
Still best phone I've had, better than iPhone 3GS IMO - not used the SGS but have heard a number of bad things about it
Best thing you can do is have a go on one, then you can make up your own mind
I'd still like some opinions before I go into the store. The problem is here you actually don't get to try it before purchasing it, stores are skeptical due to the theft.
How is the touch experience in general?
I came from an HD2 and it was night and day compared to that in terms of the screens!! I'd say it's comparable to the iPhone 3GS in terms of text input but as I've not properly used an iPhone I can't say more than that. I've had no issues with the touch personally, I'd say it's a blinding phone and best I've ever used
Have you tried playing games on the Desire? Is it good in terms of gaming?
Only game I've played is Angry Birds and for that it's fine - end of the day it's a phone so I use it as one (email, calls, SMS) so can't comment more than that

Gaming is fine - if the controls are appropriate for the Desires touch screen. I've no problems with games like Nova, Skies of Glory, Dungeon Hunger, Angry Birds etc.
As to the GPU, yes it is weaker than the one in the Galaxy S, but to be honest when I do play I can't say I can really notice it. It certainly isn't a bad GPU, it's just not as fast as the PowerVR GPU in the Samsung and iPhones.
That being said, if phone gaming was only of my primary requirements, I would probably buy an iPhone anyway, though the gap is definitely narrowing!
Regards,
Dave
P.S. Note that two points is still more than one, so it does have multi-touch!
If anyone even dares to suggest me iPhone in this thread I'll shoot them in an instance . Not that it is a bad phone, I've decided to not go with it.
Multi-touch aside, is the normal touch application good? Is the screen accurate and responsive? I'm talking about the problems faced with touch screens such as applying too much pressure for it to recognize a command, the screen not being responsive etc. Especially in typing.
Is their really a big difference between 3.7" and 4.0" screen? Also, is the screen on Desire good when compared to other high-end handsets(Xperia, Galaxy, iPhone)?
Also, what are the chances for it to be completely bricked? Not that I'd intentionally do something bad(I'm quite good at flashing I guess, I've flashed my dad's Herald numerous times).
Also the most important thing, how is the GPS? I plan on using MyTracks with it to record tracks for 4-6 hours. Basically my dad is documenting the locality with photos and he goes on for 4-6 hours every day taking photos and 360 degree panoramas of different places. We'd like to Geotag them but my camera doesn't support it, so we plan on tracking it with MyTracks and then patching it with Apple's Aperture.
MyTrak as in Snooper? I work for them!!
General touch screen is just as good as an iPhone - it's a capacitive screen so little contact is needed to use and I've had no problems with it at all. Colours are vibrant too (but I've got an AMOLED screen, new ones tend to have the SLCD screen which is slightly less vibrant apparently)
The 3.7" screen's fine to view and a lot easier in the hand than my old HD2 (although it was a nice unit to use - shame about WM6.5)
My Tracks, as in Google's My Tracks. It records your GPS movement for a desired amount of time.
How is the screen's test? My biggest complain with HTC's Herald was that the screen could break very easily, is the screen on Desire strong? Can it stand scratches from objects like keys, coins or sharp objects? Is it drop-friendly?
I've a Martin Fields protector on mine and it's in its official case at all times when not in use but it is a glass screen so is still strong. I never have it in a pocket with anything else as a precaution, though
Until today, i thought Trophy wasn't a good phone based on the pictures i saw on the internet and all the videos. But.. it changed everything i had previously thought of trophy until i played it in verizon store. The build quality was excellent, and it looks slim in person than on youtube videos. There was this annoying thing on real wp7 devices. I tried the keyboard, and the typing sound was tad lagging. On my Hd2, that was not the case. Not sure if that was the model defect but Aaron from phonedog also claimed the same thing. Also, the homescreen scrolling physics was really different than my HD2. It's actually harder to scroll down on the Trophy and Focus and sometimes i mispress the wrong tiles or it goes to the right side of the screen that is filled with apps. Anyone else had these issues with real wp7 devices?
The sound lag? Yes. The scrolling issue? Nope. I'm on the HTC Arrive.

see I find that funny because the sound doesn't lag on hd2. and the scrolling on homescreen is different as well.
Omnia 7
Sound lagg?: no, screen problems?:no. Omnia 7
The screens of all phones differ some. Just have to get used to it. My Omnia 7 screen behaves very diffrent compared to the HD2.
Also, in legit WP7 Device, scrolling have to stop 100% before i can tap any on my home screen. Though it seems that if i scroll insainly fast, i can activate the tiles.
But i mostly say that its somthing about screens and respons. Om my Omnia, i barly need to touch the screen. Compared 2 my HD2 its like light years of diff, sensitivity feels like a older wm device where i must press by force, if you catch my idea.
No sound lag or scrolling issues on my HD7 or my old HD2
I agree with the above though when saying the HD2 feels like an older device, When i put the DFT release on my old HD2 i found that the screen needs to be touched more firmly when being used to scroll etc....as opposed to the HD7 where only the lightest touch is needed. (dont get me wrong though, in my eyes the HD2 has run WP7 very smoothly and seems to be more than capable.)
Regards,
Creamy
Yea screen sensitivity on hd2 isn't that good. I was wondering if someone bought trophy and have sound lag issue when typing. But I didn't know how crappy and big the screen is on hd2 when I compared it with the trophy. I was really close to buy trophy but knowing Nokia mango phone is just around the corner I postponed my purchase ..
Nope, no sound lag on mine, the scrolling thing works ok but if you scroll slow then you'd have to wait for it to stop, otherwise you'd have to tap twice to stop the scrolling and open the tile.
Using a vodafone HTC Trophy with no hacks, no mods, no nothing. Its still a virgin device. I can even do a video if you want. Or maybe its just the verizon Trophys that has this problem. They changed some minor stuff to it compared to the original Trophy.
Scrolling works flawlessly. Don't know about lag, because i turned the "typing sound" off
(imho, it's annoying and very impractical in daily usage-public transportation, meetings etc.).
Trophy
Re- Build Quality:
I thought the same thing with the HTC Arrive. It looked cheap in the pictures, but once I got my hands on it, I could tell that good materials were used, and that it was a well constructed device.
Sound lag: no
Scroll problems: no
LG Quantum
However with the scroll pysics in general, I find that the homescreen doesn't go as fast as your finger does. I mean like if in real life, you scrolled something, it would go as fast as your spun it. But the scroll speed tops out, nothing huge just throws me off a bit sometimes.

Yea i wish the scrolling was tad faster on the homescreen because when i slide it to the right to get to the apps, the scrolling there was much faster and easy to scroll.
On my Trophy since Nov/Dec and no lag scrolling or sound wise.
Like the title said, am i the only one who doesn't like the way developers are handling the touchpads controls there so... fiddly and annoying, is there anyway to make them better?
In my opinion dead space is the only game that's conquered the controls properly, also why couldn't Sony make the pads recessed and have psp style analogue sticks?
I completely agree, i don't think you can change them though that's like developer stuff in every game, Shadowgun was a disappointment for me but they are pretty good for PSXperia's games
I don't mind them, Takes time to get use to them but they are pretty decent as they are touch.
I think the centre bits could have been made so you can feel them better, so you know where you're touching.
Also, in some games, the bit in between can be used as up and down, but that's just as fiddly when you have to change to the touchpad to go left & right.

Completely agree with this, real analogue sticks would have made our phone the ultimate device for sure and it probably would have sold a hell of a lot better. If only they had...one can dream hah.
Us at www.xperiagamer.com got to speak with one of the designers of the xperia play. Because the xperia play is a phone + more then a games console there is a lot more bits to fit inside the handset, because sony ericsson wanted it to be phone like they had to look at the overall size of the play. We found out they did experiment with sticks but found it would make the handset at least half cm if not more thicker and as the phone is already a little big this would of made it a brick. Think yourselfs lucky that we have a complete controller, they could of missed out analog all together or maybe 1 like the psp then what games could we end up playing.
Plus the touchpads work perfect its the game devs that muck up. Try mupen64 with mario64 then tell me they aint good to play with.

Wow, XperiaGamer's a nice website, but i gotta disagree, opening the phone up there was quite a bit of room for flat PSP type controls expecially if the touch versions of them were gone, the sliding touchscreen could have been raised a bit too, with grooves for the analogue sticks, that could have prevented the marks you get from sliding the phone anyway

I agree! Same with Fifa 12 imo
Thanks website still a working progress at mo but will be great when filled up.
With your disagreement, we also think they could of . But thought would tell you what Sony said to us. But anyway the play is a great start to mobile gaming and even as it does have its downsides it still has many more plus sides to it.

It would take R2/L2/Triggers to make it more ultimate in addition to the pads, IMO.

I'm definitely really happy with the phone, it just would have made the device that much better. Also about the thickness, I have an extended battery which adds some thickness to the phone, but it actually helps quite a lot when playing. I would have been fine with half a cm for real sticks haha. Honestly, the people who care about aesthetic and how the phone LOOKS probably wouldn't make this phone their first choice anyway, they should have just catered to the gaming crowd. OH WELL, maybe next time around if they make a sequel device.

I agree with what most of people have said in this topic, but the topic title doesn't quite lead correctly into the logic expressed here.
Like many others have said, it's not the actual "hardware" touch-pads I'm disappointed in, it's developers' way of using it.
... and by by "developers" I pretty much exclusively mean Gameloft.
EA uses them correctly, as does Lantansia, Halfbrick, HandyGames, SpaceTime, SilverTree, Madfinger, Glu Mobile, and so many others... the only real big issue with them is that Gameloft is the Xperia PLAY's biggest supporter and; coincidentally, the most inconsistent with their quality. Sometimes they make something that feels nice (NOVA 2, Avatar, Sacred Odyssey, Starfront) then other times it's like "What the hell?! SERIOUSLY? This **** is IMPOSSIBLE to control! DID THEY EVEN TEST THIS BULL****!?!"
I have a one x, which uses the same krait processor, and among the myriad of problems, the most annoying is the lag and poor responsiveness when swiping on the tiles. It visibly lags behind when I touch it. The animations are not smooth and the tile pops up noticeably later after touching them. This causes a lot of errors and missed tiles. I have to move deliberately slowly and push down with some pressure. The rest of the game is buggy as hell to, like hangups and triggered sounds and crashes. The score counter is always screwed up, not showing the word count for one person or the other, probably because its not optimized for HD screens. My old galaxy s ii had the same lag problems, and now my newly arrived galaxy note also has the same atrocious lag problems. I can get 30-40 words more on my old ipad 1, since it is very smooth and I can let my fingers fly, either in original size or upscaled.
Has anyone tried the game on an SGS3? Are the lag problems a symptom of the android version in general? While I'm at it, I'd like to complain about how choppy the animations and panning are in words with friends.

Hello, yes.. on all android devices, scramble runs horribly especially in the end of the game where it shows which words you've found. The scrolling is beyond slow. I have a nexus 7 tablet and it runs pretty slow as well especially compared to my iPhone 4S. I love android.. but some of the apps just can't compare.
The developers of the app are to blame. They chose to cheap out on the android version, making a horrible port from iOS.

Hi everyone. I had a Xperia z but sold it and got the smaller Xperia zl because of personal preference. However I have noticed a few potential flaws with this phone . First of all the back of the phone gets pretty hot whenever I play games Like Real Racing 3 etc, it has even shut itself off on one occasion.
My main issue with the phone is That the touchscreen is pretty unresponsive during gameplay. The screen is very responsive during normal usage, for example navigating the home screen or browsing the web, The phone is able to register even the slightest of touches. But during gameplay I have to tap on the screen with extra force to steer in Real Racing 3 or whenever I am playing games via the Drastic DS emulator, the on screen directional pads dont register my taps upless i tap pretty hard or press the buttons with a slight swiping motion. i am worried because I got this phone for gaming and really don't want to get rid of it. Could it be the screen protector thats installed? or that the touch screen isn't calibrated?
also sometimes when i try to navigate between home pages by swiping, the screen bounces back instead of going to its intended target. i have the model c6506. and its on android 4.2.2 and also i never had any such issues with the xperia z
maybe its the screen protector. other possibility is that its the games' problem, not the phone. as u say, its good when on home screen etc.
iam inclined towards second possibility though, its the game which is problematic.
hit thanks if i helped u!

Ok i downloaded super stick golf 2 and tried it and guess what, the touch screen is very responsive, that game uses mostly taps, and this registers the slightest taps. I am gonna test some more games and see if your theory is right.
ok tested some more games
Tested simpsons tapout and had the same issue with taps not being registered properly
Tested Dead Trigger and the game runs flawlessly, the slightest taps were registered
Tested Beach Buggy Blitz and the screen is slightly unresponsive also, kinda difficult to steer, i have to apply extra pressure to the touch screen.
Ultimate Mortal Kombat works flawlessly, i was pulling off combos and brutalities with ease
Jetpack Joyride was a bit unresponsive also
So I guess the problem varies from app to app. I really dont want to remove the screen protector but i have to to ensure that I dont have a faulty device. I have an extra screen protector so as soon as I can verify that its the screen protector, i will simply re-install it. now how do i go about removing it because i am trying but it seems glued on!
gonna sell this

OK its definitely not the phones touch screen, i just did some tests and the touchscreen is absolutely responsive in every aspect of the operating system except when playing some games. So the digitizer is great. so it must be the darn screen protector!, and i dont want to remove it because it is glued on and i dont want to risk damaging the screen underneath. my favourite games are the ones giving problems with responsiveness. Even the ppsspp emulator from the playstore i gotta swipe the directional pads etc for the game to respond.
I dont think screen protector was the culprit, the app itself is not optimize for sony device or sony OS is not that stable.

as per my understanding, ur screen is flawless, its the apps, maybe they are not optimised.
more tests done
ok I can confirm its definitely the apps, some of them are are optimized properly for the xperia zl. I have tested need for speed most wanted (2012) and it works flawlessly, controls are spot on and screen very responsive. Also raven sword 2 and pvz works great. its a minor issue at best really but i cant play my psp or nds games on my zl properly unless i use a controller. which is fine cause i do have a huge 5 inch 1080p display. and I really love this phone so i will overlook this issue. for now
