[Q] Who Else Is Unimpressed With The Analogue Touchpads? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Like the title said, am i the only one who doesn't like the way developers are handling the touchpads controls there so... fiddly and annoying, is there anyway to make them better?
In my opinion dead space is the only game that's conquered the controls properly, also why couldn't Sony make the pads recessed and have psp style analogue sticks?

I completely agree, i don't think you can change them though that's like developer stuff in every game, Shadowgun was a disappointment for me but they are pretty good for PSXperia's games

I don't mind them, Takes time to get use to them but they are pretty decent as they are touch.

I think the centre bits could have been made so you can feel them better, so you know where you're touching.
Also, in some games, the bit in between can be used as up and down, but that's just as fiddly when you have to change to the touchpad to go left & right.

Completely agree with this, real analogue sticks would have made our phone the ultimate device for sure and it probably would have sold a hell of a lot better. If only they had...one can dream hah.

Us at www.xperiagamer.com got to speak with one of the designers of the xperia play. Because the xperia play is a phone + more then a games console there is a lot more bits to fit inside the handset, because sony ericsson wanted it to be phone like they had to look at the overall size of the play. We found out they did experiment with sticks but found it would make the handset at least half cm if not more thicker and as the phone is already a little big this would of made it a brick. Think yourselfs lucky that we have a complete controller, they could of missed out analog all together or maybe 1 like the psp then what games could we end up playing.
Plus the touchpads work perfect its the game devs that muck up. Try mupen64 with mario64 then tell me they aint good to play with.

Wow, XperiaGamer's a nice website, but i gotta disagree, opening the phone up there was quite a bit of room for flat PSP type controls expecially if the touch versions of them were gone, the sliding touchscreen could have been raised a bit too, with grooves for the analogue sticks, that could have prevented the marks you get from sliding the phone anyway

I agree! Same with Fifa 12 imo

Thanks website still a working progress at mo but will be great when filled up.
With your disagreement, we also think they could of . But thought would tell you what Sony said to us. But anyway the play is a great start to mobile gaming and even as it does have its downsides it still has many more plus sides to it.

It would take R2/L2/Triggers to make it more ultimate in addition to the pads, IMO.

I'm definitely really happy with the phone, it just would have made the device that much better. Also about the thickness, I have an extended battery which adds some thickness to the phone, but it actually helps quite a lot when playing. I would have been fine with half a cm for real sticks haha. Honestly, the people who care about aesthetic and how the phone LOOKS probably wouldn't make this phone their first choice anyway, they should have just catered to the gaming crowd. OH WELL, maybe next time around if they make a sequel device.

I agree with what most of people have said in this topic, but the topic title doesn't quite lead correctly into the logic expressed here.
Like many others have said, it's not the actual "hardware" touch-pads I'm disappointed in, it's developers' way of using it.
... and by by "developers" I pretty much exclusively mean Gameloft.
EA uses them correctly, as does Lantansia, Halfbrick, HandyGames, SpaceTime, SilverTree, Madfinger, Glu Mobile, and so many others... the only real big issue with them is that Gameloft is the Xperia PLAY's biggest supporter and; coincidentally, the most inconsistent with their quality. Sometimes they make something that feels nice (NOVA 2, Avatar, Sacred Odyssey, Starfront) then other times it's like "What the hell?! SERIOUSLY? This **** is IMPOSSIBLE to control! DID THEY EVEN TEST THIS BULL****!?!"

Fable Coin Golf, suprisingly fun and addictive

I just have to say wow, I mean this game is awesome. In all of the windows phone 7 lineup I'd say this game is only second to ilomilo. The premise is pretty simple, you take your puck, and in as few shots as possible make it past any array of goblins, skeletons, trees, whatever they might throw at you while collecting coins along the way. Sounds simple and boring but once you get to the later levels in the game it really becomes challenging to get that gold coin. Before I tried this I thought I'd be holding out for Super Monkey Ball next week before I picked up another Xbox live title. I was proven wrong, if you're not a big app purchaser I'm sure it will go down in price eventually but if you don't mind throwing out a couple of bucks for a game then this is awesome.
Playability- 10/10, the controls are amazing the geometry behind it is flawless and the game itself has a fun overtone with the narrators.
Replay value- 6/10, I could definitely play through this and come back for a round two after mastering it. I'm not putting it down until I've finished it 100 percent though.
Xbox live integration- 4/10, I love that I can transfer my gold over but if you're past the early levels of Fable 3 the amounts of money you'll make through this game really aren't that considerable... maybe throw in some special gear if we get certain achievements or something but the money... just seems like a cheap afterthought.
Overall- 9/10, the game is awesome but they always leave you expecting more when they promise integration with the associated xbox 360 game. Regardless though this game is definitely worth the purchase and I'd recommend it to anyone.
I downloaded the demo and I have to say, it was quite fun and I don't care for Fable at all. The game itself is just very well done, looks great, and is just plain fun.
I'll take a look at it in a bit

[Q] Xperia PLAY vs Xperia ARC !!!

Hello!
Please tell me which games are there which I can't play on ARC while I can on PLAY?
Please name such games if you can.
I am about to buy any one of these tommorrow, and don't know which to prefer; here is a little comparison, please correct me if I am wrong and also mention something I might have missed;
ARC :
Great body design
Great body material
Great Camera
Poor sound
No gaming Pad
Larger Screen
Not so good Web experience
Not so good Touch Interface
Radio
PLAY :
Average body design
Poor body material
Average Camera
Great sound
Gaming Pad
Average Screen
Great Web Experience
Great Touch experience
No Radio
Also tell me is there any difference between them as far as the user experience is concerned, I mean any application or function or anything that ARC has and Play don't or vice versa?
How much do they differ as far as the browsing experience is concerned?
So far Arc is winning, I guess, but now it all depends upon the games. That's is why I am contacting you all. I mean I am interested in Star Battalion and Asphalt (which from what I know can be played on ARC), and not much interested in Crash Bandicot.
Please reply soon.
Thanks in advance.
Kinda answered your own question personally think the play is only good for gamers so if it doesnt intrest you better off with the arc play dev is moving along slowly right now but hopefully pick up soon
Sent from my R800x using XDA App
Why is the web experience and touch experience not so good on the arc and good on the play? I don't think they are different because you don't slide the pad for web and it all comes down to screen. If any the arc should be better because it has a bigger screen, unless I'm missing something.
I wouldn't call the screen on the play average, more like large and larger for the arc.
Personally I'd trade my Play for an Arc today because I like more the camera than playing games and yet I find myself playing a lot more than before (when I didn't have a gamepad).
I think you should divide pros/cons for each device so it'll be easier to weight it. After all I believe between those 2 it comes down to: better camera - better gaming experience.
You didn't take weight into account ? I went from a Galaxy S to a Xperia Play and that is the major downside I experienced. Otherwise, I like the Play.
The battery is surprisingly heavy

At 1500mAh it's gonna be heavy compared to the batteries in a lot of other phones.

I have never played with the Arc, and I always liked slim phones (Samsung) over the bulky ones (Nokia), however I just migrated from Samsung Jet to Xperia Play... and wow... is a big step up...in weight (and pretty much every other aspect), anyway you get used to it pretty soon, now everytime I get a hold of a slimmer phone (Galaxy S, LG Black, Galaxy Ace) I feel kind of girly... (no offense intended).
Me - Xperia PLAY - Man phone
My GF - LG 970 Black (white) - Girl Phone
They actually make a cute phone couple hehehe
I traded my arc for a play and i couldnt be happier , the arc continually rebooted even when doing normal tasks like texting !!
The battery is rubbish , the screen is pretty good but not as good as i expected
but at the end of the day i like gaming so the play is always going to be better in my eyes
The screen is reallly good on the arc

[Q] Does the pad have uses other than games?

I was just wondering whether the pad has uses other than games? (navigating around the droid conventionally perhaps?)
Is there an app or perhaps already something added by SE into the PLAY that allows me to re-purpose the pad and it's buttons as say a shutter key or whatever else I might think of when not in game?
Does something have to be Xperia PLAY optimized for it to recognize the pad?
I'm asking these questions because I'm trying to decide between this and the Neo. I'm into emulation and gaming BUT that's not the only thing I do on a phone so I don't want to put up with all that extra bulk and a worse cam and no radio if the PLAY's only benefit over the Neo is all the PLAY optimized stuff. I'd then rather put up with struggling around on the touchscreen for the games like 95% of the other droid users out there, I'm sure the experience can't be that much worse.

Yeah the pad can be used for navigation of the UI. The X button is select and the O button is back. And trust me until you try it, you can't understand how bad gaming is on a touch screen compared to the play
Thanks but that's not quite enough.
Seems like my decision has been made for me anyways since locally the PLAY came in at a much higher price point than the Neo preventing it from being available on my contract (and putting it right in the firing line of the flagships if I were willing to pay extra) which mean it's just plain a no-go.
Eventually you can browse in websites with it, and some apps will recognize it as a joystick or a trackpad. Still, the Neo is better value for money if gaming is not your top priority.
Gaming is high on my list but the camera comes first. I'm not happy with the everyday 5MP phone cam and want something better and Neo's cam is definitely that even it's outclassed by other 8MP cams. I do tend to like passing the time playing games on my phone though, but o well, the PLAY has been priced out of my range anyways as I said.
PLAY is great for gamers
Not sure how neo looks but if your not into gaming neo and arc are wayyyy better =/
I used the XDA App to post this, what did you use?
I use the gamepad to navigate whilst browsing and to position the cursor much easier when typing.
If you want to emulate games, you have no chance of playing them on a touchscreen. Its not just bad, it's impossible.

That seals the deal. You're better off with a Neo.

Gamepad Durability

How is everyone's gamepad holding up and how long have you been using the phone?
I was playing Marvel vs. Capcom last night and forgot how hard I like to mash the controls! Maybe because the phone's smaller than an actual controller, I feel like it's so much more delicate.
Let me know if anyone's buttons have begun to stick, break, or just quit working and being responsive.
its a really solid gamepad for me, ive had mine for just under a year now and ive played heaps of games, emulators, ps1 games etc
there has been no sticking or breaking for me, just for a few games there have been issues because im on the ICS beta

You just mean compatibility issues on ICS, right?
Are we talking about the gamepad and the buttons or ICS here ?
It's pretty damn durable.
I've dealt with Windows Mobile, iOS, Windows Phones and other Droids... needless to say, having BUTTONS was such a damn relief that I went on a fighting game frenzy (I kid you not when I say I've played almost every fighter released in the past 20 years)... and the Xperia PLAY's been taking it like a champ.
I saw a article once where sony claimed that you could beat the hell out of the gamepad (to an extent) and it would still work.
As for mine, the only thing wrong with it is the scratches caused by sliding up and down
All buttons work fine for me, and i bash them a lot, only had since christmas though
Perfect, this is just what I wanted to hear. Looks like I can mash away then!
I'm so surprised at how good the controls feel, especially the D-pad. They have such a nice click to them and still feel good rolling forward and back (Hadouken!)

I agree. All the buttons click nicely when pressed. Sony Ericsson did a very good job !
Honestly, the only complaint I have at all is that my hands cramp from holding the small device and pushing buttons quickly. But what can I expect, it's not a controller, it's a phone.
My hands probably wouldn't cramp as much if I didn't make Megaman dash-jump every step he takes...
The gamepad itself is durable, but the flex cable inside the slider sure as hell isn't.
the Xperia Play gamepad it's tough i guess
mine works like a clockword :good:
but the slider of this device feels frail

My slider on my xperia play is weird. Sometimes if i slide my xperia play closed it shuts itself off.
I think its pretty durable slider seems pretty good give ls a reasuring clack when it slides open and close the only think I could complain about the gamepad is the L/R triggers after 6 months of my second play (first I dropped down the toilet) the R trigger seems alot weaker than the L because of heavy fifa and FPS gaming but love this phone would like a xp2 but thats a different topic ..

Gamepad still works great. Still got that clickiness to it but the slider is a bit loose still not a problem though as everything works.

Emulatoring like a Boss | "Now you're playing with real Pow... Buttons!" #Turnand

Emulatoring like a Boss | "Now you're playing with real Pow... Buttons!" #Turnand
Super Mario Vs Ash - the struggle was real.
Let me take the elephant out of the Room. We (@Turnand) have designed a Smart, Smartphone Case that can turn your Phone, into a Game Boy. With that outta the way:
So, if you’re reading this post, you probably have used an emulator before. Amiright? Well, emulating any handheld console on a Computer, works like a charm; albeit with one exception. These systems are not that demanding-“advanced”, to begin with, but the feeling a large monitor speaks when we are talking 160x144 awesome pixelated Pokémon art, is just wrong. Your 20ish inch FHD monitor has no power here. Your phone on the other hand; well that’s a whole other story. A story, with much more ups and downs, and options to explore, dare I say. Let’s jump in:
As a child I’d swear by my Game Boy, but in my teens, it got lost. It got lost, by a kid 2 blocks away from my place. Luckily, at around that time I got my first smartphone. A Samsung Omnia!
An amazing phone at the time- it was 2008 or so. It could emulate Pokémon, Super Mario, and even Final Fantasy ([email protected]) IX! Yep, a PS1 game! Ok, its specs would be laughable by today’s standards, but still. It was an amazing Pokémon-machine! But, anything out of the turn-based RPG genre and maybe puzzle games, was totally unplayable. Why? Well blame that resistive, smallish touchscreen.
Now fast-forward almost a decade. It’s 2016, and my daily driver is a LG G Flex 2. A 4G, octa-core, 5.5 inch, fHD monstrosity. So, why am I still complaining? Well, cause my original problem still persists! Smartphones and tablets were made with throwing birds to pigs in mind. None will ever consider them a real alternative to a console, until they get proper controls.
Ten-year-old me, beat Super Mario World Advance 2, on the GBA with no problems at all. To this day though, I’ve never even reached world 3 using an emulator, on any phone I’ve ever owned. A PC got’s proper controls, but simply doesn’t feel right to me. On the other hand, yeah, I have paired a Bluetooth controller to my Android phone before, but I love to see you balancing your 5inch phone, or even tablet, on your laps while holding a gamepad, on your daily commute. Everything game-boy-ish is called a hand-held, instead of a lap-top, for a reason!
That’s the need Turnand’s cases try to solve. That’s how the original idea spurred into our minds. This was a real life pain for us, and we believe that we are not alone in this. Gamers, and retro enthusiasts unite! Let’s take things in our hands for once. Literally grab yours now. We can’t change the past, but we can game comfier in the future – lol. We’ll be on Kickstarter on 29 June, 2016!
So this is Turnand’s take on the matter: The smartphone case we’ve created can transform your smartphone into a Game Boy; and trust us, oh it feels good. But no, we are not suggesting that you compromise your smartphone’s usability. In the end of the day, that social-media- feeder / cat-photos- viewer you call my phone, still has to and should always be ready to receive calls and texts.
Side Note:
We are a Start-Up taking its first baby stepps. So our website is still under development, but you can take a look, and we'd love to have you join us on Social Media! So our Facebook is awaitng, so does our Twitter, and some we also got some jazz going on Instagram !
Let me guess something, before wrapping this up!
And, if my guess is correct, then you will read the next paragraph! ‘Ere it goes: You also used up all the batteries from the TV remote, and the wall clock to feed your Game Boy!
Amiright?!
With that out of the way, allow me to clarify that our case / controller thingy, won’t need no batteries, charging, not even Bluetooth, Wi-Fi; no nothing! It’s just works, take my word for it. Or don’t, you can ask for a Beta Prototype, here!
