Help and cautions thread, who has or hasn't lgpnst ? - Sprint LG Optimus G

Just curious if any us would be willing to share their experience with the LGOG ? Have you had to lgpnst or not? What were you doing/installing that caused it (or you think)? What have you done to avoid it ? And how many of us have done the same mods with different results?
I will start with my experience::
Currently running lifeless v11 , installed conversation skins , used th3bill aroma to install some sound tweaks.
What I have done so far lol this is gonna take a min::
Every version of lifeless from the beginning, even 5 that had instability issues , then onto imp int all 3 versions there as well. I have a couple oh no she won't boot situations as well in between ( do to my lack of reading full instructions)
I have not to date knock on wood had to lgpnst back
Processes I use :
When flashing new ROM (not new version) from different devs always always full wipe factory/cache/dalvik and as I found out in some situations the system needs to be flashed.
When flashing updates of ROM version cache/dalvik cache seems to be sufficient.
When flashing mods I never flash more than 2-3 at a time as some mods will cancel others out so better to reboot then flash more if needed/wanted.
When flashing kernel , just be safe and flash kernel only then reboot.
When using aroma be sure to be at or above 50% or plugged in to wall no CPU (CPU will only slow charge) and try not to let it sit for longer than 10-15 sec in between choosing mods/option as it has a tendency to lock up
Now here is where we separate ourselves , I am not a programmer nor do I have a plethora of CPU knowledge, in fact until I soft bricked my Galaxy S2 I never even used PC I was Mac only , I quickly learned that windows was needed. But I do not know exactly how kernels work, what OC/UV potentially can/can't do ( I have a general understanding ) so I do not venture into tweaks I don't know or haven't research a s*** ton before I do.
Well I know this is a lot of repetition but I hope this thread can prove to be useful for a lot of us who want to do things with out causing ourselves to much headache.

For me for when I have ventured more and have more to share

Ya I hope to never lgnpst or do a battery pull. But when i had my S2 i would soft brick it often and it didn't bother me cuz odin was so easy to use. LG software seems a lil too complicated, but i am glad we have guides tho. Just in case.

Well as for the aspect of oc/uc ov/uv increasing your voltage can damage your processor if you go too high; basically you pump more electricity through the cpu, therefore increasing the frequency at which the crystal which determines your clock speed vibrates at, therefore, increasing your clock speed, this is overclocking/overvoltage; this increase in voltage also results in an increase in heat, which is the core factor as to whether or not your CPU will fry.
Either way you go (overvoltage or undervoltage) you may run into stability issues, usually around higher speeds (which the cpu is not really designed to take, it heats up and things go wrong).

I have not used lgpnst

Didn't have to lgpnst but earlier set the phone down for a couple min then when I got back it was on white/black screen that our phone gets when its on but not lol
Weird finding tho have just a ton of power down button play turns out I just had to hold vol up nothing not even pwr and it booted in to recovery, like I said weird cause I held the pwr+vol up combo and was a no go back to same screen. Mmmph dunno but everything back up and running

I had to lgnpst after installing FREEGEE for the first time. It was the paid version from the app store. I don't know what went wrong but I was definitely soft bricked. Haven't had any trouble since.

I have to all the time since I always jump at the chance to test Adri's ports lol

I did use lgnpst when I had an issue with the capacitative buttons and power lighting up, but knowing what I know now, a battery pull would have worked (lgnpst didn't, I had sprint order me a new one under the TEP plan)

[Q] Why do ROMs behave differently for people?

In general, why do ROMs behave differently for different users? Hardware differences?
I want to better understand why some of the later ROMs are buggy on my phone and no other users report these issues, or why some of the fixes don't work for me.

I'm in your same boat... the only major problem I have is the xda app force closing on me... that's about it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Because like I have always said, EVERY phone is different. There are imperfections in the die cutting process of the chips, allowing some phones to overclock at 1400 Mhz and others can't go beyond 1100. The same goes for sd cards and memory on the phone. Add into that interaction with thousands of different apps and versions. Now throw in the fact that Clockworkmod is not for our phone but was ported allows for more bugs in the mix. There are other factors like data corruption. The best shot at getting 2 phones to have similiar experiences is for each to be taken back to the same stock tar, root the same way, don't restore any data, flash the ROM, then set everything back up again and redownload apps fresh from the market. Once you vary from that "start fresh" format it is similiar to painting over a stained wall. Sometimes it covers, sometimes the stains bleed through.
Thanks, you confirmed my original assumptions.
Also depends on previous setup before rom flash usually different between users things like ext. 4 or rfs some roms are different so you should always read everything on previous rom and new rom before flash.

I'm personally experiencing the very nasty end of this issue, as for some reason, the "voodoo sound hack" on EI22 ROMs breaks headphones.

Download the voodoo control app from the market and make sure the volume is turned up with it.
Also the phones seem to also use different hardware, like different revisions and actually different chipsets. Just read a thread right off the bat and if you have issues then wait a day or two and read the new posts and see what the issues are and see if those things will bother you before you try and make back ups all the time.

What is SOD and why do unofficial JB roms randomly freeze phone?

I've tried looking for the definition of "SOD" but couldn't find it. what does it mean? (sorry if it's a noob question)
also, i've been running unofficial JB roms from Cyanogen and AOKP, but both of them randomly freeze up and restart my phone. and when they try to restart, they dont do anything after the initial samsung logo pops up. any possible explanations for that? i figured it couldn't be a bad download when it happens with two different roms...but i could be wrong. should i flash different kernels? and any way i could expand my battery life on ROMs? my battery sucks on most ICS/JB roms...
Sod is sleep of death.
Did you try darkside cache wipe? That could fix boot loops

i did, but im talking about the ROM actually working and in the middle of an application or something, it'll freeze up and try to restart. and i have to take the battery out and put it back in for it to completely boot up again.
AFAIK what you describe is sod. Freeze and have to take out the battery to reboot. RR=random reboots, where it reboots ant not freeze

Actually, SOD is the behavior in which the phone goes into "sleep" mode... typically screen off, and then won't wake up with power button.
From what i've read... SOD happens when you do really aggressive clocking to save battery life. There seems to be two states of CPU, when the screen is on, and off. Depending on how / what state / governor is used... you could get SOD. I forgot all the various threads I've read this on... but search for it and you should find a ton.
The behavior you're having is more of an RR than a SOD. Granted you're freezing up. The better question is... are you following all of the ROM OP's instructions? Have you been RESTORING apps from backup? Bottom line is... DON'T.
DON'T install zip's/mod's that aren't included and validated by the OP. This includes kernels. The JB CyanogenMod and AOKP threads I believe say don't flash any other kernels yet.
DON'T restore from backup. At least don't do it until you know you're stable with just the ROM itself.
That'd be a start...
No need for battery pull. Just hold down power button till you feel phone vibrate. Between 10-20 seconds.

ahh i see. well that's annoying lol. ironically, the battery life is still not that great on my ROMs haha. but yeah i did follow up instructions from the OP. now when you say restoring apps...does that include things like messaging? i don't restore things like facebook/group me/flipboard or anything like that. usually just messaging and call storage data that i restore via Titanium Backup. does that count? and no i also havent tried to install any mods or kernels of my own. i usually just use the ones that the ROM comes with.

Thing is, I've been running the latest builds of CM10 with little to no SOD or RR issues and I've been restoring data from backups of the previously nightlys builds using TWRP. Granted, each phone is different... But each phone is different lol. Precautionary advice is good I suppose, but to me it would create a hassle if I had to start with fresh data on my apps whenever I updated. Of course, I don't report bugs, but I'm sure a lot of users don't regardless.

Galaxy S3 i747M Kernals?

I was wondering if there are any custom kernels out for the Canadian (rogers) Galaxy S3 SGH-i747m
I have found a custom kernel for the AT&T SGH-i747 i was wondering if any Canadians have tried flashing an AT&T kernel on their SGH-i747m?
Please give me all the info you have :cyclops::fingers-crossed::laugh::highfive::victory:
Any at&t kernel should work for your phone

no offense meant, but if you are asking this question I would advise holding off on flashing any kernels and get more comfortable with just flashing roms first -- Roms are more pre-packaged and you can build your comfort level by trying out a series of roms prior to messing with the kernel which is a more powerful and inherently more influential element to your phone's operation
Appreciate the input I have flashed many roms but i allways go back to stock, i flashed a kernal earlier but i went back to stock kernal because im scared of burning my processor, not quite sure how safe undervolting and overclocking is, and ya im a noob just got my first android phone about 2 months ago and just rooted it last month.

I haven't tried faux kernel but ktoonzes will be OK left stock processor wise, it won't burn out your processor. Plus you will benefit from his built in tweaks. As far as over clocking/ undervoting ( oc/uv) if you go too far your phone will either freeze up or reboot, so don't use any "set at boot" options until you know your phone will handle it. I use ktoonzes kernel with no oc just the lower frequencies and a mild under volt for battery savings with no ill effects.
thanks for seeing the comment in the way it was intended! seems you have going about things the right way: everyone's phone will accept OC differently, some operate fine at higher levels, others not -- Faux does not post "recommended" levels for this reason, asks that you make adjustments in small increments and use your phone to see how it handles the changes. It is very much a trial and error. I had an older S1 that was wonderfully resilient and would take any setting and still function -- I lost it long before it had a chance to get damaged, My own sense is the phone itself is robust and hard to actually kill -- my earlier caution was more to prevent you jumping in the deep end too soon.
I have tried both Faux and the KT747 kernels, presently running just stock which is in itself a pretty decent kernel.

I tried Ktoonz and it made my playstore act weird and not connect and error out and such.
So I reversed back to my backup image with the rom's initial kernel that was installed with it.
I only find Kernel's being useful for OC or Dual Booting if you need/want the fun with that.
Otherwise find an amazing rom like Serenity or WanamLite or something if you want more customizability
OR a stock rom whichever one suites you better.

Perhaps your voltages and/or settings were too much for your phone to handle. When it gets out of hands, apps will FC a lot and phone will usually freeze or reboot. If you didn't edit the settings, I don't think the kernel left at default settings would affect the Playstore's connection.

[Q] Are the relatively newer ROMS too heavy for Desire Z ?

Hi guys,
I have question regarding my HTC Desire Z .. Ever since I rooted the phone about 1.5 years ago, and have been trying out the newer ROMs, I've slowly realized that my phone is getting slower, slower, and slower .. I'm currently using a Jellybean ROM, and its *extremely* slow ! I mean, at times I receive a call, and the ringer rings about 5-6 times, and during all this time, the phone doesn't have the juice to switch to the phone app, so that I can 'accept' the call ! Ultimately the call disconnects itself!
A friend recently suggested to me that maybe the newer ROMs are two powerful for my phone, and that I need to move to an older Android version ROM, which my Desire Z CAN handle, without this much lag !
Also, I hardly have any apps installed on my phone at all, in an attempt to keep the load low .. I also use 'Advance Task Killer' regularly to kill background apps, but it doesn't really improve anything ..
What can I do to improve the speed of my phone !? I really pisses me off to see a 10-15 second lag when I call someone !
Get rid of the task killer first of all...

I dont think it will make any difference .. I've tried many different ROMs, and its always the same condition with all ... Sometimes my phone become *so* unresponsive that I just feel like smashing it on the ground ! (When I really get upset!)
Also, on another note, when I open Advanced Task Killer, it shows me the amount of free RAM on the top .. Most of the times this value is between 60 MB ~ 100 MB, and sometimes between 100 MB ~ 140 MB .. If never seen this value go above 135 MB or so ... And Desire Z is supposed to have 512 MB of RAM
just full wipe and reflash the rom

If I do that, it will initially be fast .. Even if I install all my apps on the first day, it will still be okay in terms of speed ... But give it a week, it eventually becomes slow .. very slow! .. And the odd thing is, during this week, I don't necessary install/uninstall anything .. the phone just ****s itself in somehow ... And then from then on, it remains slow, no matter what ...
I open Google Maps, takes like 15 seconds to open .. takes another 60 seconds to go to Google Navigation, and then further lags after that ..
Basically there's a lag in *everything* !
Is there a way I can see what is slowing down the phone ?!
Also, is it true or not whether an older phone, such as Desire Z, can or cannot handle a relatively newer Android version ROM ? Maybe this is why the latest Android versions are NOT officially available for phones many times, because the manufacturer knows the device cannot handle that newer Android version ?
If your rom supports ext partitions, make sure all of yours are formatted that way. Chances are you have sopme bad apps, a logcat may hedlp determin abused wake locks or memory leaks. Also you can try downloading battery batt stats or watchdog for more infor

i had a play with elitemod ics the other day & it was defiantly slower than the GB version... it was using more or less double the ram which i suspect is the real problem.....
Yes its true the newer versions are more hungry. We touched on it in one of the andromadus threads recently. I believe the issue to be the cpu. The nexus s has the same amount of ram as us and although its not as good on there as the gnex, its still good. Having bumped my lower cpu limit a notch, its much better. I also tried a few upper limits and found that 1200 to be best as it suffers with animation under that.
But then all dz's are different. Stay on your rom and bump up the lower limits a few clicks and let us know what you think.

I've noticed the slowdowns happening with negligible CPU load and no memory constraints. I suspect a problem with the kernel. At the times it happens, the phone seems to be just doing *nothing*.

Is there any other thing I can try apart from logcat ? I installed Watchdog a few hours ago, but so far it hasn't reported anything out of the way ..
What does have ext partitions do ? How does that speed up the OS ?
Also, I'm probably going to be re-flashing another ROM soon, so please suggest me a ROM ... I'm looking for maximum longterm stability and responsiveness here, so even if a ROM isn't the newest or the most feature-filled, I can still try it out ..
And what is Superwipe (read it in another thread) ?
Normally, when I restore stuff after installing a ROM, I download a fresh copy of the app from the Store, and only restore the app's data using titanium .. is this okay ?
For the sake of starting fresh, flash the ext 4 recovery and flash mimicry as your rom. Read all suggestions in the first few post on mimicry, to flash 4ext I made a thread, you'll find it the first page or so in the general section (dzhboot or something)
Mimicry is one of the best made best performing full featured ics roms for our phones, partitioning everything to 4ext (easily done through recovery) will make it far better. Other bonus tweaks will be added in.
There (in my opinion) are beter performing gingerbread roms, but I do sugest mimicry as it is amazing and the dev has laid out a wealth of knowledge in the first few posts

I'm assuming you're referring to this thread: http://www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714187
Well this is the ROM I'm currently using, which I flashed about 2 months ago, which is giving me all these performance issues ..
I went through the first few pages, but I didn't find any instructions on 4EXT ... The only thing I found was in the OP's FAQ in the start, which said that you should apply ext by downloading 4ext from Play Store, if you get lags ..
Anywhere else I can look ?
Look in general section, somewhere in the first page I posted a thread called dzhboot on g2 or something to that extent, one of the first few posts I eplain how to flash 4ext recovery.
One of the fastest roms I have used is elitemod cm7, maybe try that

I have been wondering the same as the OP. I have been using andromadus and andromadus mimicry roms for the past few month. I tired cm9 unofficial but it was no different to mimicry in terms of lag. Currently on flinny's jb beta http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005136. Lag is not terrible but too often I am looking at a white screen waiting for something to happen.
I often experience lags opening apps like phone and browser (any browser). Phone hanging when trying to make a call is particularly annoying because my wife asks "why is your phone so ****?"
I would love to have a really smooth experience like others report but even with a fresh wipe I seem to have trouble. When I try to reduce the process limit i still seem to have too many processes running. What should i look for in logcat in terms of tracking down the problem?
Maybe 4ext will sort it out? I am very loathe to go back to a cm7 rom.
Ext4 worked really well for me to speed up my phone.. I highly recommend it.

It's gotta be a certain app your installing thats hogging all your memory, I been running mimicry ever since blk released it n have had very few slowdowns.
Never had a problem receiving/making calls 'wiping' is not the same as 'superwiping' its different then just the name, I suggest you do some reading up before flashing any more roms.

i superwipe, and i've been flashing roms since the g1. I am not seeing any particular process hogging resources. this current jb beta is pretty good but still get some lagging at random.
if that were the case I would love to try and find out what it is.
it seems to me that a minority of users report lags in rom threads and are dismissed without ever really getting to the root of the problem.
I would really like to try and get to the bottom of it. I am going to move to ext4 but if there are other troubleshooting steps to take I am all ears.
Ext4 alone will make a huge difference, and most of the rest of the slow downs will be do to apps/running services which can be seen with a logcat what is continually trying to use cpu resources
If only a minority report slowdowns then either that minority has a different idea of how the phone should run/ they use the phone in a completley different way/ or have different settings and apps then most have.

Yes just delete the Blade firmware inside with the exe and replace it with your own.
Any more technical information? How are there "3G updates"?
Just minor tweaks that I made at a personal level, like the rest of my kernel it is very personal. I try to balance performance enough for it to be smooth, as well as easy on the battery to last all day.

Please read though this guys thread from March 2013 before you decide to try this! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2188485
With that little information in the op I'd be an idiot to try this

Why is it not offered as a flash-able ZIP?

Because something smells fishy. The whole zip is 3 megs smaller than most kernels. You didn't explain these "background" processes and tweaks in this kernel. No info about what these network tweaks are or what they do. I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole.

The fact that you have to do any of this is ridiculous, STAY AWAY.
He just said his brother made it, then just said that there were tweaks that he put in. I'd watch out.
you obviously didn't learn your lesson from the first thread you made. you need to get banned from xda, delete this thread please. malware.

No list of real modifications or changes, no flashable zip, doesn't even say for what platform, android version, or anything.
Definitely some jerkwad trying to spread malware. Gonna have to hope this is flagged and removed asap.
Get out yo' banhammers

There are no sources and no credit given for anything "included" in this tool, at this point in the devices life, I highly doubt there is anything original left to do to it, let alone all that you claim this tool does. The fact that it is solely in .exe form is worrisome, to say the least, as any tweaking can and should be able to be done via scripts, which do not require exe's to run.
This is supposed to make tweaks at a kernel level, sources and documented changelogs should be in place as well.
I don't like it, smells a little off.
