[Q] Rebooting and Power Issue - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

My phone seems to have some kind of issue. Starting this morning, my phone rebooted twice without me doing much of anything to it - I clicked the power button to check the time, and doing so caused the phone to reboot. I waited for it to reboot, and when I clicked the power button again, it rebooted once more.
Now, whenever I click the power button, the phone won't wake. I can wake the phone and use it normally by pressing the volume keys, but I can't put the phone back to sleep. My phone is still randomly turning off and rebooting as well. Right now, it's off and I can't turn it back on because the power button isn't responding. I have to plug it into the computer/wall to actually turn it on. Does anyone know what's going on?
At first I thought it was a faulty power button, but I've no idea what to think now. I'm running Calks E4GT 3.
For the time being, I'm using Smart Screen Off, which is working great. I can live with this, but my phone is still likely going to reset, and I have no idea why.

I'm no expert but when that happened to my phone I had it replaced. Turned out to be a faulty power button...

I was thinking about it, but I'm certain it's out of warranty. My contract expires this November, so I'm really hoping that's not the case.

It's your phone a year old or older?
Do you still have the original battery?

It is. I've had my phone since November 2011. I do still have the original battery, though the battery is pretty much shot. It had overheated (it was charging underneath some comforters), but a few days later the battery came back on, and I've been using it ever since. I'll get a new battery, but do you think that's what the problem is?

You can definitely try changing the battery, but also if you have insurance on your phone you should be able to call sprint and have them exchange it. I did it not too long ago and I had my phone since day one. I'm positive that my warranty was expired but I still had insurance on it. They sent me another one 2 days later.

I would definitely say yes, you need a new battery!
Amazon is your best bet. Anker makes a good battery.

How much did that cost you? I might have insurance on it, but I have no idea. I remember replacing one of my previous phones and it costing $50.

To be honest they didn't even charge me..lol. All I did was call sprint, told them that my power button wasn't working, they asked if it had any water damage. I told them it didn't and she asked if I had insurance, told her I did and she simply said no problem, asked for my address and said you'll have another device in 2 to 3 days. Received it in 2 days returned the other one no questions no fee..

I'm most definitely sure it's your power button going broke.
Battery issues usually make your phone flicker like auto brightness is adjusting before shutting off. And so on.
A battery issue wouldn't make your phone reboot by itself when touching the power button.
My friend use to have power button issues like what the OP stated. I told her, her case is causing it(she had one of those cases that block the power button and volume button with rubber) we took the case off left the phone alone for a day and the power button worked correctly. I since have cut out the rubber to her case.
Sorry about the long post
I've known 6 ppl with the E4gT in the past 3 months that have Power button issues. I usually can spot them now.

Seems a lot of people are having power and battery related issues. I've had my e4gt for around a year and my battery is going out. Had 2 ordered today so hopefully no more problems. Lay your battery down flat on the table if it's bulged or misshapen then it's bad. They're only like 10 bucks on ebay.

Sounds like what Im experiencing is the power button issue as welll; phone wakes up on and off by itself, power button doesnt always wake up or put the phone to sleep (or brings up power menu), and random reboots. So assuming this is the case for me too, and with insurance, will I have any issues trying to get it fixed if my phone is rooted? Or just make sure I have unrooted my phone and made stock before I take it to Sprint and Ill have nothing to worry about it then?

It is always best to go back to stock. They will likely charge you $50 for it though so it is actually cheaper to go to http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-epic-4g-touch-power-button-repair/. No need to go back to stock with them and they do great work.

I believe my power button is going out too. It does the rebooting cycle like others have mentioned and simply rubbing my finger across the button (without pushing it) will cause the phone to turn on and off.
I currently don't have insurance on my phone. Sprint sent out an email a couple of weeks ago about Insurance Open Enrollment. Anyone know if I can enroll now and turn around and take my phone in for repair (unrooted of course)?
Thanks

There was a thread on the power button issue on the Sprint.com forums, and a poster claimed he didnt pay anything for the repair and didnt have insurance (I guess because its apparently a known/common issue now). I figured with the open enrollment it might be worth $8 just to make sure Im covered, although apparently you have to wait 3 days after you signup (Jesus waited 3 days, so I guess I can too huh?). If its a known issue with the phone that is apparently at least somewhat common, I see no reason Id have to pay $50 to have it fixed.

****. This just started happening to me this morning. Phone was working just fine. I am just running stock rooted and now seems like everytime i try to turn off the screen the phone reboots. I have never dropped this phone. I dont have any insurance policy from sprint. Do you think there is anything they will do with this phone?

My reboots started happening earlier this week. I'm running the JB GB08 rooted leaked release. I called Sprint this morning and added the insurance coverage since open enrollment runs through the end of March. I plan on taking the phone into Sprint over the weekend after I reinstall the office ICS release build.

Button Problems and First Root Ever

Hi, Everyone! This is my first post on here but I have spent the better part of the last week reading all the different threads. Yesterday my Samsung Epic 4G decided to go a little insane on me. It was working eprfectly fine (especially for a 2 year old phone) when all of a sudden my power button seemed to start cyling and the power off screen kept popping up and the volume keys did the same. I turned the phone off and even tried taking the battery out and giving it a rest but the problem persisted.
Another issue was that some of the numbers no longer worked correctly. The even numbers both on the touch screen and keypad would dial
"2468" instead of the corresponding number; very weird! The phone had never been rooted or modded at all. Well I was able to get into the phone after figuring out a way to input my passcode with the faulty numbers and I performed a hard reset. The phone is back to completely stock but the power button and camera button do nothing. The volume up button works well but the volume down (besides lowring the volume) button causes google search to pop up and then a bunch of letters and numbers to be typed in both the google search bar and in the message of box of the last person I texted. I can still use the phone by opening the key pad to wake the screen up and I can text and call fine as long as I don't touch the Volume Down button. Also, battery life is ridicolously low. I am up for upgrade but don;t really feel like upgrading to the S3 just yet. Sorry for the long post. I know it is against forum policy but I wanted to get the whole story out there. So here is what I am looking to do:
I want to root the phone and install one of the roms to maybe eek out a couple more weeks out of it. Again it works ok now, just the sliding out of the keypad and lack of power button sucks. The phone boots up if I take the battery out and put it back in wihtout touching the power button.
I have read up on Odin and that looks somewhat straightforward. Just trying to see what you think is my best course of action. Again, I do not have a power button working or camera button and a faulty Volume Down Button. Maybe I can do the whole slip in the battery while holding "1" to get it into download mode? This will be my first time rooting a phone so any help is great and appreciated. Thanks and again, sorry for the really long post!
I forgot to mention that the phone is currently running on Gingerbread 2.3.6. This may or may not make it more difficult to root.

was thinking this as well
It actually got wet about 1.5 years. I threw it in rice for about a week and never had any issues. The phone has never frozen or had issues the past year and a half. Yesterday it was in the kitchen charging (with a samsung charger but not one for this phone specifically) and it started doing the whole power button/power off screen flashing. I was able to get it in download mode earlier today but i don't know about recovery mode since the power button is dead. Maybe I should root it to see if its a hardware issue?
Edit: I forgot to mention that the phone gets really really hot while charging as well in the area above the battery. Hopefully nothing short-circuited.
It could take a while before the corrosin gets bad enough to affect your phone. I dropped a phone in the toilet once, and it was over 2 years before it crapped out. Took it apart and it looked like an old Chevy wheel well inside.

That is a good point. I never thought of that. It was also in the kitchen which was humid and hot as ever yesterday. Do you think any kind of root or rom could help me squeeze a little bit of life out of my old phone.

So I left the phone alone for a couple days with the battery out. I go to turn it on today and it worked perfectly. Then after about 5 minutes the power button stopped working again, but everything else is ok. No random letters and numbers and the volume buttons work as well. Now, I'm kind of lost as to what to do. I do have a parts phone, same one as this. Maybe I need to replace the power button? It clicks and everything and even worked for a couple minutes but now is non-functional again.

Power Button??

So, my phone just rebooted out of the blue and the power button no longer works. sometimes it will get the power menu to come up, and then the phone will reboot if it is pressed again. I am running a VENUM hybrid ROM. I would not even know how to attempt a factory restore without an operable power button... anyone have any tips? I don't think Sprint would even fix this as I bought it from another Sprint customer

the battery moisture indicator is pink. i just cracked open the phone and I only see one indicator towards the bottom of the phone near the USB port, which is a fresh dry white. Don't think any moisture could have reached inside for whatever reason (not that it was wet recently...)
are there any others?
is there any way to power up the phone without the battery and test?
Mine does the same, it's started two months ago. It's gotten to the point where the phone reboots itself literally fifteen times a day. Very frustrating
Swyped from a Galaxy S2 on CM10
I guess I have the magic touch or some ****... just put her back together and it works like a charm I will be getting an extended battery I think. This battery is worn out and doesn't hold a strong charge.
I'm sorry to hear that multi, it's a true pain in the ass. I was just in touch with a Sprint rep and they said something about a $35 repair option?

My phone started doing that since yesterday. This is the second time it's happened.I'm thinking the power is stuck, cause when i try to turn off the phone. It always restarts itself. It's killing my battery.
This has been happening to me as well. It usually happens after chrome freezes on me tho. It did it for the first time not on a chrome page today. I think it's just the battery tho, it's been getting worse life lately. I ordered new Anker batteries so if it quits after that I'll keep everyone updated.

[Q] Side power button not as responsive.

Anyone had similar issues?
Over three weeks in, I am still blown away by this phone as I am finding new features everyday BUT I am also having difficulties with my power button. As I read in the Sprint forum, some time ago, it was noticed that the power button seemed loose, 'rocky' on a pivot. Other Note II demo phones had some flexibility with the power button as well. I haven't read about any problems with a lagging or unresponsive power (not home) button due to this but NOW it seems I have to press moderately-centered on the button to either wake or ZZZ the phone. Before it seemed I can press this button with as much force as the home button, even at an angle (Note II is wider after all). So my BIG question Have you ever pressed on the power button more than once to just wake up your phone? Or, put it to sleep? Do you have the press the button dead centered for it to work? And, does your power button seemed rocky, even slightly?
I am not rooted...running on good ole factory specs! My phone has never been dropped or damaged either. I would hate to send the phone to Samsung and be without one for 2 weeks, so I figured to troubleshoot with you guys first
Much thanks!

my phone did the samething within 3 days of when i got it. i just took mines back to at&t since it was so quick and the manager gave me a new one. hopefully someone does come up with a way to fix it without you having to send it yo samsung.
mine works flawlessly
Haven't noticed any issues with mine, but I suppose these kinds of issues are why I bought insurance.
My power button is 'rocky'; it seems to pivot from the center. However, I can press it anywhere to wake the phone or turn the screen off. There's a satisfying click when I do press it, so I'm not worried.
Same issue with my power button. Happened only a few days after I received mine as well.

Gathering the input so far, I think I might have to send this to Samsung to get it repaired since I passed my return/exchange period I have insurance but I am also under warranty with Sammy, so that route would be cheapest. Good thing I still have my old flip phone from 2005 that still works but going to dread going back 7 years though!
Lets hope that this doesn't become an eventual problem for most. Thanks for the comments so far.
Definitely take it back to repair it. My power button started off rocky and eventually became worse with use. I had to replace it. Get it fixed ASAP
got my first one replace with a new one due to same reason.
Mine works fine to turn off.
Turn on is a bit more picky.
Does not rock or is not loose.

I believe it used to be 30 days for personal accounts, now those terms only apply to corporate accounts. For personal accounts, its now 14 days. From what I understand, this policy covers items bought from a corporate AT&T store, or ordered direct from AT&T. You are allowed to exchange or return at a corporate store, with a possibility of a $35 restocking fee depending on the scenario. Also, you can also send it back to AT&T but you will have to cover shipping. I only suspect if you buy from a re-seller (aka a non-corporate AT&T store but clearly marked 'AT&T') you can exchange or return at a corporate store.
From what I was told by AT&T and a brief conversation with Samsung, the Note II carries a 1 year manufacture's warranty. I don't know the specifics, but assuming there is no abuse or damage of the phone caused by the user, and if the phone does not perform as it should (like mentioned in this thread), Samsung's warranty will cover it with no charge. But realize, unless you have a backup phone, you won't have a phone for 2 weeks! Also, there is a possibility that Samsung may use reconditioned parts, and if they can't fix your phone, you will get a reconditioned model But what if you have insurance? Then there is a deductible. A possibility of a reconditioned phone too?
Oh, what to do?
What is return period for premier accounts? Is it also 14 days?

Mine is the oppsite, it is too sensitive, not very tactile. I hit it accidentally all the time.
my power button just went wonky last night. it used to be somewhat rocky, but it was responsive. now it barely moves. i cant tell if im pressing it or not. it still powers on the phone. but there is no click or comfirming feeling at all. it might as well be capacitive now. about 40 days old.

(UPDATED) Power Button Failure/SIM Card failure / will sell phone for parts

To sum it all up: Power button is failing.
Constant power cycles/boot loops. Extremely touchy. still makes "click" noise, and still physically functions, pressing and depressing.
Booting into recovery only works for a lil bit because the power button is "soo touchY'
and yes, theres apps that reassigns power button function to say...the volume button. Using that option for now.
I watched a video on screen replacement for the glide (best way to get to power button?), and attempted to unscrew a couple screws to see if i can get to the button and see if any physical debris is causing the issues, but got nervous and stopped because I've never taken the glide apart like that before.
After doing research, i see other galaxy and samsung phones have had issues, and normal wear and tear, its gonna happen..I see replacement buttons for similar devices on ebay/amazon for about $10-$20.
anyone got experience with this? any advice would be grand.
warranty is expired, and the phone is rooted and all that jazz.

Just remember it sells on new egg for 250$ so don't pay more on eBay then that.
Well, now this phone is a very expensive gps/camera running AOKP.
I'd like to sell this for parts. Thought I would try here before listing on ebay/amazon.
I can reflash to stock if needed. I just don't have the experience of replacing some of the hardware, but Im sure someone does.
As of now, SIM cards wont work in it, and about half the time you hit the power button, it goes into a boot cycle for about 10-15 minutes. will go back into boot cycle if power button is pushed "in" the wrong way.
feel free to PM me.

[Q] Phone won't turn on, blue led light stays on

Hi everyone,
This is my first post and I hope I won't somehow piss anyone off. I'm just looking for a little advice or guidance.
Device: SPH-D710 Samsung Galaxy S2 on Sprint (CDMA). It was running the latest over the air ICS update. It was not rooted.
Background: Starting about a month ago the phone began to occasionally restart on its own. Also, my clock widget began to disappear randomly, no matter how many times I would put it back on the screen. It would also occasionally crash on resource heavy apps like chrome or facebook. I installed Go Launcher to try to fix the widget problem. This is the only thing out of the ordinary that I've done recently.
Problem: While running an app the phone crashed. I pulled the battery and restarted it. It never booted. The screen remains completely black and the blue LED light stays on. I've tested a different battery, it wasn't the problem. I've plugged it into my computer and it does not see the device. Plugging in the charger turns on the blue light (I can only turn it off by pulling the battery).
Question: I'm pretty sure this phone is bricked but would love confirmation (whether you can confirm or tell me how I can confirm). What I really care about is being able to access the data that was on the phone. Is there any way I can access the data? The sprint store said it would be 50 bucks to look at it and if they can't fix it they would get me a new phone. I really don't care about a new phone. Is there anything that they can do to recover my data that I can't?
Basically, is there anything I can do to access the internal memory files? (Secondary question is can I fix the phone).
Thank you in advance for your input and excuse me if I haven't followed all common etiquette on this forum. (I did search the topic).
Do not send it to sprint. Look up jtag. Send it to a reputable company like mobiletechvideos. They will repair it if it can be brought back. Solid blue light is bricked. Flashing blue light is a bad battery. Goodluck.

It definitely looks promising - if they can fix it, would it be fixed but wiped? My main concern is recovering internal data.
spoke to kyle at mobiletechvideos and he thinks it's an emmc failure since it wasn't during flashing - in which case my saved data is gone forever. anyone disagree or have any other insight? can i save my data?

Mine started the random reboots, and then reboot loops, then couldn't get the screen to turn on...blah blah blah... lots of issues lots of people have seen. It was all because of the power button. It eventually got to where it just didn't work at all, and i was smacking the power button corner of the phone on a table or something to even get it to power on, and having to use the volume rocker wake option to wake the screen. I'm not sure if your issue is the same, but it only cost me $40 to get my power button replaced at a cell phone repair shop locally and took the guy less than 30mins.
Just a suggestion, may not have anything to do with it, but it could save you some money it happened to work. Alternatively you could try smacking the power button corner of the phone on a hard surface a few times and if it is the problem, it might unstick long enough at least know thats what it is.
I'm no expert, and i make no guarantees or promises, just my experience with mine and my wife's phone over the last 2 years...lot's of issues solved by one of three things, power button, usb port, and battery. Good luck!

Mine started the random reboots, and then reboot loops, then couldn't get the screen to turn on...blah blah blah... lots of issues lots of people have seen. It was all because of the power button. That is not the issue. This is an emmc failure for sure.

Do not send it to sprint. Look up jtag. Send it to a reputable company like mobiletechvideos. They will repair it if it can be brought back. Solid blue light is bricked. Flashing blue light is a bad battery. Goodluck.
