Hi I just found out that we got an update. Now usually when a new update comes out I odin back to stock and then update and reinstall twrp then make a nandroid of my stock rom. Then I go back to my AOKP or whatever I am using which is usually something AOSP. In this way I have the new modem and I have a nandroid of the latest stock rom. But last time we got an update I ran ito the problem of the stock recovery rewriting itself. So I was able to use the the security hole to root the phone and then I was able put twrp on. Now this update is supposed to patch up that hole so how do we root? Use the tookit to stop it from rewriting? Or I guess I could just flash the new modem and forget about it. So does anyone know how to get it done?
Also does anyone know where to get a odin copy of the newest update?
I followed someone's instructions and installed ota rootkeeper from play store. Updated phone and kept it rooted

CF-Auto root still works.

So, like most people this morning, got the OTA notif. I'm on stock Rogers roms but rooted. What's the best way to get that update without having to restore phone? Don't care if i lose root or CWM as we can get them back.

As long as you never flashed the modified recovery (Clockwork, etc..) then you can do the update and wont lose anything but root. But since you have CWM installed, you'll need to flash the stock ROM (like I did) and retry the update. I didn't lose any settings when I flashed the fully stock Rogers ROM.
and after, how do i root again?
Just Odin the LG1 image from this thread. It will update you to LG1 and include root in the process.

*edit* just noticed you are in Rogers.

I know this is a nook question but could the fact that I am rooted with clockwork mod recovery be preventing my update?
I download the OTA update and reboot recovery and start the update then it says something about could not update do to signature or something like that.

Because you are rooted it wont wont. It requires the stock samsung recovery to apply that update OTA. So either you put the stock samsung recovery and then apply that OTA update, or you download the CWM flashable version of that update thats available in the other forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896773
Im assuming you mean the AT&T LH9 update

Actually, root has nothing to do with it. Its all about the stock recovery.
Right but most of these folks who are rooted will have done so by flashing CWM and then injecting the root zip or flashing a rooted rom. But yes it doesnt have anything to do with the root itself, it fails because the recovery isnt the stock recovery.
Best option for him would be to use the CWM flashable one I linked.
How cod I flash back the stock recovery and will I lose root if I do?

If you apply the OTA update via the stock recovery then yes you will lose root. There is a thread that has the stock recovery image file you could flash back. But again, if the LH9 is the update you looking for, then why not just use the CWM flashable ZIP on the thread I linked earlier? You are not giving much specifics if that is the update you are attempting to apply.

I'm not sure which update it is I just know I was prompted to download an OTA update and it failed. I have not had the time I used to with my s1 to keep up to date with all that's going on with rooms and stock updates and what not. By the way what is the most stable roms out there right now? I would like to try a jelly bean Rom if they have any, also don't want to lose any features of stock.

rooted all my devices, havent rooted this one yet in fear for it messing with OTA. if i use the insecure boot imagine flashing via odin root method (option #1 on the toolkit), will i lose the ability to receive OTA updates?
You could always skip it, remove root and get it later on that day.
If you keep all the stock apps it would probably remove root without effecting anything else.

rooting by itself shoukdnt cause problems if you're using stock recovery and don't modify system files. Ota can interfere with root though.

I believe you would be able to get an OTA if you were just rooted, but after applying it, it would break your root and your would have to root over again. If you have a custom recovery the OTA would just fail to install. I could be wrong on the first part, it's been a long time since I only rooted, without installing a custom recovery as well.

what about if i install OTA rootkeeper? would that make a difference?
The biggest thing you need to consider is whether you have a custom recovery or stock. Only a stock recovery will let an OTA update flash. If it's custom you'll want to either flash to stock before trying to update or wait a day or so unitl someone uploads a rooted .zip version of the update.
i think im going to stay with stock recovery.
so i just rooted and installed CWM. if i reflash stock recovery via odin, will the phone stay rooted?
Sorry if this has been asked before and I missed it when searching, but on this sprint galaxy s3, can the OTA update be applied successfully after being rooted?
I ask because I just got one for my girlfriend and she wanted me to root it so that she can use the wifi tether program. And out of the box it was still on 4.0.4. I successfully rooted it with out any problem using the tool kit. And now it's prompting for the update every day, which is getting annoying to her. I told her to hold off till I can find a clear answer.
I know I can get a 4.1 rom and flash that now that it has cwm recovery on it if the update is a no go. Its just a manner of getting her to decide on which one she likes.
You can update but you can not use the normal OTA that she is getting the notification for if she has a custom recovery installed. The good thing is that, if you receive the notification and tell the phone to update it will fail and then stop nagging you for a while.
There are a few ways to go about updating if you want to. You can replace the stock recovery and then update. You can also manually apply the update (the update in in a ZIP in the cache folder). Move the update from cache to your sdcard and then flash it from CWM. This will only work if you are strictly stock (i.e. no modified or removed system files).
http://androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390135922294523494 flash in cwm/twrp. No wipe. This is a modified version of sprints update without the system checks
Cant say it enough. I have updated the normal ota way with root. Mine and my wifes as well
Thanks folks. Went ahead and had her run the ota and it was successful and she still has root.

Muchas garcias Billiard. This will be so much easier than trying to restore all the bloatware apps!
I just got a s3 the other day and was gonna root and install some roms. My s3 has been updated to the 4.1.2 ota. I was simply wondering if I were to root it and install a rom and decided to go back could I simply flash the odin 4.1.1 image for it and then go ahead and update ota again? Had done this with my note 2 before and was just wondering if anyone else had any insight. Thanks
****EDIT****: i decided to just try for myself seeing as my s3 is just my play around device and i always have my s4. i flashed the latest android 4.1.1 before they had the ota update UCDLK3. Odin went great and then when i booted back up i stuck at the samsung screen. but to fix just went into stock recovery and factory data reset and boom my device booted up into a clean fresh state. no problems with wifi or anything. so for those of u wanting to unlock your device but had updated to 4.1.2 or maybe just want a clean slate (my position) then i can confirm it works just fine. and then you can just do the ota again if wanted (doing this as i type ). hope this helped.
You can flash with Odin. I used the all in one. The WiFi will stop working on stock ROM. When you flash new ROM WiFi will work again. You may have a couple of bugs to work out but it is worth it. Just google to find solutions. Good luck.
