[Q] JB Related - Theme and Partitions - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

2 Part Question here.
After a good run on CM/AOSP built roms, I'm coming back to stock based for awhile. Has anyone seen/found a way to get an aosp style signal bar on FI16 ? (Battery, clock, wifi/signal) ??
2nd Question is: Since the JB builds seem to do partitions differently with /preload - anyone bounced back and forth between source built JB and stock based ? If so, what did you do about that extra partition?

Jellyverse has blue themeing. Not sure about other roms.
Flash a jb stock odin one click before flash a jb rom zip. Flash a non jb one click before trying anything else.

Thanks Blues... I did not realize the one-clicks re-partitioned.
I saw Jelly's theming but I really wasn't a huge fan of it. My personal taste is more of a simple blue AOSP style and I just haven't found that on the JB stock based cooks yet. I'll keep watching and if it bothers me enough maybe I'll try one myself.

Only restore re-partitons. If you want to ensure it's done, you can use a complete ics tar, along with the proper pit file, and check the option in pc odin.

That's not confusing at all.
I read somewhere, and it turned out to be pretty true, that PITs are actually kinda of a big deal... And for some reason, they don't work properly most of the time... The PIT that i suggest people use is in fact for the Fascinate, but why would that surprise you? The partition layout of the two phones are exactly the same, it's just our phone has the ticker I use that PIT simply for the fact that i know it works, and it doesn't cause problems... And when i tried to use one made specifically for our phone, it didn't work out too well....
So yeah haha

I just ran into an issue trying to odin an EC07 rom with the Fascinate .pit. It wouldn't complete and I had to pull the plug and start over.
It depends on what Fascinate PIT you are trying There is one specific one that works...... A lot of the others DONT............ (Not even properly for the Fascinate...)

Best AOSP Rom?

Hi, I am not new to rooting and custom ROMs but it has been a while and the forum has so many roms that it is hard to decide which is the most stable.
Would you guys please recommend to me the best/most stable/most customizable(cyanogen) AOSP rom for this phone? Basically I'd want the best CM9 rom and hopefully CM10 once its stable.
Thanks

I have not tried AOKP. That particular version you linked is no longer being developed. There is a newer Jelly Bean build here:

1. I believe the difference between the to sections is that Original development is for AOSP based roms while android development is for roms based of stock or leaked firmware. That being said i dont think that many people understand that when they post and it has been kind of a Cluster f.
2. Are you currently on the OTA? you will need to odin a kernel that has a working recovery with it. If youre going to another rom right away it may be easiest to odin EL26 cwm, then load into recovery and flash because this will install the kernel/recovery packaged in the rom.
3. Ive used AOKP some and its pretty nice but i am one that likes to stay with a rom that still has activity. That way if i have problem there may be a chance that it is going to get fixed. But if you are ok with a few problems here and there go ahead and test out CM10 or sbrissens AOSP.

Hey! Generally, my flashing process is to 1. Backup my stuff 2. Get a gps lock and power off the device 3. Use either Calk's Format All or the JB Format all x2 4. Flash the ROM You wouldn't need to do anything special when switching to JB by the way, only maybe the GPS lock. If you are happy with the stock feel and stability/battery that Calk's gives, I'd recommend Stock rooted. For more customization, AOKP 4.2 or CM 10.1. Hope this helps! =P

Don't forget if its TW JB you need to also flash a JB modem or data won't work right and you need to flash back to an ICS/GB modem to go back to ICS or AOSP JB builds for the same reason. After flashing modems always flash to a TW ROM and update PRL and Profile before flashing an AOSP based ROM

But there are so many conflicting posts. And, his videos are marked outdated in the threads I have seen.

Most ROM threads are hundreds of pages long. It's not feasible to read the entirety of it.

I recommend you consider a stock/rooted build to start, especially if you need your phone to be reliable and want to use it as a phone, if you don't car about reliability and if you use it as an entertainment gadget and don't mind fixing on a daily basis then go after some custom roms.
So you have two categories, stock/reliable or custom/mysterious? Fancy tweaks, bells and whistles don't always mean reliable.
Pick one and start reading, skin and look for recurring issues, the less the issues the better the Rom.
Re-read op's and use videos as a reference and keep it simple.

How do I discern between an AOSP and a TW rom?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Usually you can pick that up in the title of the thread and in the op.
Source has not been realised for JB, so choosing AOSP is going to put you into a custom rom vs a stock rom, to flash you will be using antiquated methods until source is available, thus increasing your bork potential.
I would go stock/rooted gb08 jellybean which is TW based and the one click is everything you need in one package for now. You want to keep it simple for now.

Going to jump in here.
You discern by reading about the differences. You search, read, then read some more. Usually a whole lot more.
If you don't, you are sure to end up with an expensive paperweight. ESPECIALLY if you are not careful going between these two very different type of ROMs.
PanchoPlanet is right you should probably start off with some 'One-Click' stock rooted ROMs. And since you don't know what those are I'd take the time to read up on them. Get comfortable using PC Odin and Mobile Odin. Learn and understand how to use clockworkmod recovery. Learn how to install zips via recovery. Learn how to flash kernels and modems via PC Odin. For all of these there are plenty of How Tos and Tutorials here already done by excellent developers and contributors.
Read the post on how not to brick too!
Good luck.

What TW ROM should I install and NOT mess up the EFS?

Hi guys.
The title pretty much says it all.
I currently have the XXDME4 modem installed (went to this from XXDLJ2 and... I have no idea what modem I was using prior to that) and am using Slim Bean ROM. But, I want to give a TouchWiz ROM a try, to test something sound related (5 minutes), then be done with it and return to AOSP based ROMs and such. With all this modem/EFS talk... I am very confused. Don't know what modem/ROM base I am safe to go to now...
So. What TouchWiz ROM should I install and be free of any EFS ****ed up things?
Thanks in advance!
If u r happy with this modem, install a rom like assasin which gives you option whether to keep the old modem and kernal or to change it. If you dont change the modem, efs wont be messed up I fee

I know that, but... I wanna do it the easy way, without having to backup & all...
Anyway, guess I'm gonna have to do that.

(still got a lot to read on this thing, that's why I'm asking for now)

Ya. If you lose your EFS anytime at all, Revert back to XXDME4 and restore this image.
There is no other easy ways than this. This would just take seconds and you're already rooted.
As mentioned by people before, you're fine as long as the ROMs you're flashing doesn't mess up with modem.

That's easy, download any rom, enter the archive with some Zip tool and replace the modem part with your current one. Or if you feel up to it, edit installation script to not flash modem. You can do the same with kernel so it is not flashed at all. That way you can use any rom without fear
Most roms are in fact compatible with wide variety of kernels / modems (even if some are included in installation - they are tested by developer to be fully compatible) so you should have no problems. For your information you can currently use all roms that are from ME6, MF2 and MG1 family - as Adam's kernel author mentioned, the compatibility problem lies in changed kernel ramdisk and he uses old one so you can flash his kernel over any TW rom without fear of breaking EFS.

It's easy: rom names are created from years and months and inmonth revisions
so LL7 is revision 7 of December 2012 rom
A-January
B-February
C-March
D-April
E-May
F-June
G-July
and so on...
also
A-2001
B-2002
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
L-2012
M-2013
So anything before ME1 is really safe. Best would be to flash stock for example XXDMC2 and on that flash any new custom rom with modem and kernel flashing disabled.

Not from CM side CM mostly does not care what version of modem you have, and it's not the modem that is creating all those problems, but newer kernels (ME6 and newer). So don't touch the modem at all or flash it if you want. But don't flash newer kernel ME6, MF1 or MG1. Flash Perseus 36.3 kernel, do it immediately after flashing rom, without restarting recovery, because once you run new kernel even one time you have a problem.

So... I can flash a ME6 ROM but not boot it, and flash this older modem again + Perseus THEN reboot and I'll be safe?

But hang on a second. What if I flash a new modem? I do not intend to stick to TW - I just wanna test something sound related cause NO ONE ELSE WOULD then go back to Slim/CM etc.
If I use the very latest modem (whichever that may be) and use them on CM... Would there be a problem?

If you are still wanting to run JB check out one of the one click Installers. I suggest the rooted wipe all version. Remember the wipe version will format your internal sdcard so back up anything you need first. These will get you back to the JB file system and got should be able to flash any of the ROMs available here. Good luck
I've done every jb one click ..rooted, unrooted full restore with Odin on my PC. Not one will work. Just stays in boot loop. But ics and gb flash just fine
