Yes the hardware could undoubtedly support Gingerbread or even ICS, but who among us can build that kernel from scratch?

I apologize if this has already been discussed in a previous thread but why are we using the Fascinate .pit for EC07?

That's not confusing at all.

I read somewhere, and it turned out to be pretty true, that PITs are actually kinda of a big deal... And for some reason, they don't work properly most of the time... The PIT that i suggest people use is in fact for the Fascinate, but why would that surprise you? The partition layout of the two phones are exactly the same, it's just our phone has the ticker I use that PIT simply for the fact that i know it works, and it doesn't cause problems... And when i tried to use one made specifically for our phone, it didn't work out too well....
So yeah haha

I just ran into an issue trying to odin an EC07 rom with the Fascinate .pit. It wouldn't complete and I had to pull the plug and start over.

It depends on what Fascinate PIT you are trying There is one specific one that works...... A lot of the others DONT............ (Not even properly for the Fascinate...)

Hello all,
I am helping a friend with this phone. Is writing a PIT file supposed to take a long time? Thanks!

Not longer than like 5 seconds, no

[KERNEL/ROM/RECOVERY] Stock EL13 2.3.6 Rooted w/ Rogue Recovery 1.1.2

GENERAL INFORMATION
This is Calkulin's stock rooted EL13 2.3.6 ROM/Kernel, with Rogue Recovery v1.1.2.
The only modifications I made were adding Rogue Recovery v1.1.2 to Calkulin's ROM, and modified the updater-script to format /data.
I made this for my own personal use, and thought I would share it in case anyone else was interested in it. I'm not trying to get rich and famous, claim anything as my own, or even do anything even remotely amazing or interesting here. If I possibly saved you a couple of minutes by downloading and flashing one .zip instead of two, that is why this is here. I'm not interested in how many people give me thanks or donations or anything like that, I just thought I'd try to put this out there if it might be helpful to anyone.
If your not interested in this, that is fine with me. This really isn't anything special and may not be much help to you. I get that. I'm not interested in cluttering things up with negative posts.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Make a backup in your current recovery
Download zip from link below
Place zip on sdcard
Boot into recovery and install zip
Let the phone boot back up fully, then update profile and PRL

Hmmm...
Wonder if we could take that ROM, change the updater-script to match our mounting points....then we just need a kernel....
Which we have one kernel already made. Not sure if it would work though.
If anyone would help set up a build environment that would work for our kernels and roms then I will gladly help and start learning.

Well, it shouldn't take too long. It may be possible to build a CM9 Kernel for our phones using parts of the stock kernel that we have access to.
Once the JB source is released, an S3 port might actually be viable. Otherwise it's essentially just flashing a gnex image and praying something/anything works.

a CM9 kernel shouldn't be needed, just a modded kernel for our specific phone from what i believe.
We know this, but it's more of an experiment. Also, it helps work out anything we may need to do early on with the modules and drivers

Why not take this ROM, change the updater-script for our mount points, remove the flashing of the boot.img, flash ROM then flash the kernel Roman release?

why does it have to be a cm9 kernel?
to be completely honest, as soon as we get a cm9 alpha, we will see some worth while stuff! but until then. TouchWiz it iz. We will have team kang's AOKP in no time im sure. i cant wait to see wuts to come. especially since this phone is at all the major carriers and they are all basically exactly the same! should be epic.

[Q] JB Related - Theme and Partitions

2 Part Question here.
After a good run on CM/AOSP built roms, I'm coming back to stock based for awhile. Has anyone seen/found a way to get an aosp style signal bar on FI16 ? (Battery, clock, wifi/signal) ??
2nd Question is: Since the JB builds seem to do partitions differently with /preload - anyone bounced back and forth between source built JB and stock based ? If so, what did you do about that extra partition?

Thanks Blues... I did not realize the one-clicks re-partitioned.
I saw Jelly's theming but I really wasn't a huge fan of it. My personal taste is more of a simple blue AOSP style and I just haven't found that on the JB stock based cooks yet. I'll keep watching and if it bothers me enough maybe I'll try one myself.

What TW ROM should I install and NOT mess up the EFS?

Hi guys.
The title pretty much says it all.
I currently have the XXDME4 modem installed (went to this from XXDLJ2 and... I have no idea what modem I was using prior to that) and am using Slim Bean ROM. But, I want to give a TouchWiz ROM a try, to test something sound related (5 minutes), then be done with it and return to AOSP based ROMs and such. With all this modem/EFS talk... I am very confused. Don't know what modem/ROM base I am safe to go to now...
So. What TouchWiz ROM should I install and be free of any EFS ****ed up things?
Thanks in advance!
If u r happy with this modem, install a rom like assasin which gives you option whether to keep the old modem and kernal or to change it. If you dont change the modem, efs wont be messed up I fee

I know that, but... I wanna do it the easy way, without having to backup & all...
Anyway, guess I'm gonna have to do that.
One q. Now, as I am on XXDME4, if I ever switch to another modem which changes EFS... if I revert back to XXDME4, will it be okay?
(still got a lot to read on this thing, that's why I'm asking for now)

Ya. If you lose your EFS anytime at all, Revert back to XXDME4 and restore this image.
There is no other easy ways than this. This would just take seconds and you're already rooted.
As mentioned by people before, you're fine as long as the ROMs you're flashing doesn't mess up with modem.

That's easy, download any rom, enter the archive with some Zip tool and replace the modem part with your current one. Or if you feel up to it, edit installation script to not flash modem. You can do the same with kernel so it is not flashed at all. That way you can use any rom without fear
Most roms are in fact compatible with wide variety of kernels / modems (even if some are included in installation - they are tested by developer to be fully compatible) so you should have no problems. For your information you can currently use all roms that are from ME6, MF2 and MG1 family - as Adam's kernel author mentioned, the compatibility problem lies in changed kernel ramdisk and he uses old one so you can flash his kernel over any TW rom without fear of breaking EFS.

Yeah...
Ok. So, as I now am on XXDME4, what other modems am I safe to go to? DME1, DMF2, DMG1...? Anything, EXCEPT for DME6?!

Anything before dme6. Dmf2 and dmg1 are after so not safe if you don't want the efs headaches.

F***. Now I don't know what's after and what's before. Can you please tell me what's before...?
It's hard because even in the modem thread, there is not a list with all modems in chronological order...

Samsung version naming is alphabetical followed by a hexadecimal suffix. Bmf1 is older than dmb2 which is older than dmb5 which is older than dmc3.

It's easy: rom names are created from years and months and inmonth revisions
so LL7 is revision 7 of December 2012 rom
A-January
B-February
C-March
D-April
E-May
F-June
G-July
and so on...
also
A-2001
B-2002
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
L-2012
M-2013
So anything before ME1 is really safe. Best would be to flash stock for example XXDMC2 and on that flash any new custom rom with modem and kernel flashing disabled.
Oh... I think I understand...

But hang on a second. What if I flash a new modem? I do not intend to stick to TW - I just wanna test something sound related cause NO ONE ELSE WOULD then go back to Slim/CM etc.
If I use the very latest modem (whichever that may be) and use them on CM... Would there be a problem?

Not from CM side CM mostly does not care what version of modem you have, and it's not the modem that is creating all those problems, but newer kernels (ME6 and newer). So don't touch the modem at all or flash it if you want. But don't flash newer kernel ME6, MF1 or MG1. Flash Perseus 36.3 kernel, do it immediately after flashing rom, without restarting recovery, because once you run new kernel even one time you have a problem.

So... I can flash a ME6 ROM but not boot it, and flash this older modem again + Perseus THEN reboot and I'll be safe?
