Best AOSP Rom? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi, I am not new to rooting and custom ROMs but it has been a while and the forum has so many roms that it is hard to decide which is the most stable.
Would you guys please recommend to me the best/most stable/most customizable(cyanogen) AOSP rom for this phone? Basically I'd want the best CM9 rom and hopefully CM10 once its stable.
Thanks

I second that. CM9 Beta 1 has been very stable for me.

Interesting.. so thats in the original development section, whats the difference between original and android development?
Also, I'm a little lost on the whole recovery thing... can someone please explain it to me and how I can get the safe clockwork for my s2 so I can flash the CM9 you guys posted? My baseband is the FH13
Edit: What do you guys think about AOKP? I loved it when i had my evo... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514665
Can I follow the simple steps in that post? Any requirements beforehand?

I have not seen a consistent explanation about the difference between the Android and original development forums.
I have not tried AOKP. That particular version you linked is no longer being developed. There is a newer Jelly Bean build here:

1. I believe the difference between the to sections is that Original development is for AOSP based roms while android development is for roms based of stock or leaked firmware. That being said i dont think that many people understand that when they post and it has been kind of a Cluster f.
2. Are you currently on the OTA? you will need to odin a kernel that has a working recovery with it. If youre going to another rom right away it may be easiest to odin EL26 cwm, then load into recovery and flash because this will install the kernel/recovery packaged in the rom.
3. Ive used AOKP some and its pretty nice but i am one that likes to stay with a rom that still has activity. That way if i have problem there may be a chance that it is going to get fixed. But if you are ok with a few problems here and there go ahead and test out CM10 or sbrissens AOSP.

1. Yeah I was going towards that conclusion but I dont think people understand it either.
2. I already flashed CM9. I used the mobile odin method in this link: http://e4gtcm.blogspot.com/p/cm9-install-guide.html
I flashed the kernel and I got stuck on recovery and couldnt get back to my regular rom. I was just wanting to get a recovery then I mounted the storage and put CM9 and gapps and flashed away. Now im running CM9 and its flawless.
3. Can you link me sbrissens AOSP? Thanks!

First time flashing in this new age

Hey all, long time lurk, first actual post here though. I used to jump rom to rom back when I had the original Droid on VZW, but that was so long ago, at least in terms of Android Development anyhow. So ffwd to today, I've had my E4GT now for perhaps 2 months, and I've already rooted it, flashed a Team Rouge Recovery to it (cause it was the latest I think), and am on a stock GB EL29 Rom, and I think an EL26 Kernel.
Now, I know that things have complicated so much more since the last time I was savy doing all this, so I'm vague and still learning about all the different things that can be switched in and out, here and there. But I've been too caught up with all of the recent ICS issues that were presented with the leaks and the actual release. I've since found a rom that I'm comfortable with, AOKP 7-13 , but I'm not trying to mess anything up despite having done nothing but read for the past month and a half about what to do and not to do. One thing I am absolutely sure about is that I came into this scene at a horrible time lol, things have been changing as I read them!!
Now! With this rom, is it completely nessasary to use this specific recovery, CWM5? And, is this the recovery in question? If not, please point me in the correct direction.
And "the normal route" that is mentioned in the first information post in that AOKP thread, would that be the flashing of an ICS rom from a GB rom to prevent the emmc problem that was happening, even though such this rom has that feature removed (at least if I read it correctly)
I'm not stupid nor am I completely horrible at following directions, but after feeling like getting the run around just by attempting to piece together information from different sources, it would really just put my mind at ease, and stop the headaches lol, if someone whom this wasn't so...new to could provide me an outline to follow, or at least do this, don't do that pointers.
I know this is long, and thanks for reading. I'm just hoping to get back into the scene, I hate being anxious and not know, <-- ie. my current state

Okay, first of all, AOKP already comes with a recovery (TWRP). However, if you would rather use clockworkmod then you can use this: http://tinyurl.com/7ysnylg Also, in any case where you want to flash a different ICS ROM, I suggest you use el26 CWM.
I'm aware of the TWRP that is included with the AOKP rom (listen to me, slinging around slang like a pro, lol) I only felt I needed to use CWM5 because it specified it in the instal instructions for the rom.
I would assume that I would need the CWM just for switching ICS's in the future, if that does turn out to be what I'll be doing, seeing as how ICS looks like it'll be nothing but improvements from here on oot.

Ooooh I get you! yes its best and suggested to flash any new ics rom from el29 stockrooted
Odin el29 stock rooted
Then flash el26 cwm kernel
Reboot to recovery then flash the ics rom
If your already on an ics rom MY method is to always Odin el29 stockrooted

Righteo, that helps some. Now I just gotta back everything up. I made my original backup once I first rooted, I shouldn't need to make additional, right? You can find rooted, stock GB roms to go back to...right? Lol its late...I need another doobie :cyclops:
EDIT:
Actually, I'm already halfway through that. I am at el29, stock rooted. And I have the el26 kernel. I just need the CWM recovery, then the actual piece de resistance, the rom. Right Krazy?

I was actually in a similar situation as you. I came from flashing on the HTC Hero(which is running AOKP at the moment, and I'm soon going to flash the new Jellybean rom that was just released for it), and that phone is completely different from the E4GT. Although i didn't start flashing from GB, I started on ICS.
I actually went from FF18 Stock Rooted to AOKP milestone 6 Friday the 13th using Agat's recovery from source, and it's a safe recovery, without problems. I am now loving AOKP

The yellow triangle is Samsung way of telling the techs an unofficial kernel was flashed to the phone. People use a jig or if your on ICS you can use triangle away to reset the binary counter.

Thanks. I am looking to flash for the first time on this phone also, just got it a week ago. I came from the Vibrant which was so much more simple. Another question if you don't mind. I am on the now running stock OTA ICS. Do I just need to Odin a safe kernel then flash which ever ROM I choose or are the ICS kernels that are built from source now safe to flash from?
The kernels built from the source are safe. Agats kernel with recovery. You can flash that kernel being on stock FF18 and flash from there.
Edit: the agats kernel I have is for TW roms. So just do some research on what kernels you can use. (Cm9 and AOKP use different kernels.)

I have done a ton reading, just stuck in the old ways of my old phone and simplicity of flashing on it. It was all a little confusing because even some of the updated ROM threads still say flash back to EL26 first, which is also a TW kernel isn't it? But then I read in another place it is safe to use Agats kernel built from source and so on. I was a little shocked at considerably less custom ROM options on this phone compared to the Vibrant. Granted the Vibrant has been around longer, but there were so many more options at the start which kind of leads me to think it is just that much more work to do that on this phone. By no means is this a negative remark toward any developer, just sort of expected a lot more because it is a nice phone. I was looking to flash the Platinum version of this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1712362 since I love the color red. But, thanks for help. I really appreciate it when someone actually gives an answer to a question instead of bash people new to a phone.

And if I remember right, doesn't it only trigger if you flash an unofficial kernel through desktop Odin only? I know the Auto Root Package won't trigger it, and neither will Mobile Odin.

Your correct only desktop triggers the yellow triangle.
Also just my steps to flashing roms 4 the e4gt
1. odin stock el29 rooted
2. flash the el26 cwm kernel (I provided on a few post back)
3. boot into recovery!
Flash what ever you want!
If you want to flash something else repeat those step! As you venture on you will get the hang of things! I hope!

I had all these on the Vibrant, but non are as stable as they were on the vibrant (as least by what I have read). AOKP would probably be my first choice because I am very familiar with Romanbb's work since he had a Vibrant at one time and is one of the best dev's.

Paranoid is a great ROM but some things are just a little to small for my tastes. But if I had a Galaxy Note then Paranoid would be the one for sure. But still my question wasn't answered, not getting smart, just looking for an answer...Do I need to flash back to EL26 or 29 before flashing an ICS ROM, or can I use the new safe kernels built from source? I think I need to be held by the hand on my first one.

You should be good from one of the safe kernels from source. I used Agat's recovery from source to flash AOKP from stock FF18 with no problems, did the normal factory reset instead of one of those format all zips. Not a problem with it. It should be safe to do as many factory resets/data wipes as you want from what I understand.

What's best for nitro p930?

Hi guys, got nitro hd a few weeks later. Till now never rooted and it's still in gb 2.3.5. Now wanted to try something and thought of upgrade or flashing a roms.
So what I need is, should i go for official ICS or cm rom. And as I'm a noob would like a detailed tutorial on flashing/rooting.
Thanks in advance.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Here's my suggestion of how to progress into the custom ROMs world...
1. Read about rooting your Nitro. Look in our Dev Forum for guides on doing it.
2. Root while you're still on 2.3.5 (to circumvent any of the stated issues with rooting Official ICS), also install CWM (ClockworkMod) on it as it will allow you to easily install ROMs.
3. Then try the CM9 ROM nightlies. It's fast, stable and smooth.
4. After you've gotten comfortable with that and have gone through a few nightlies...Then you can feel free to venture forth into the other custom ROMs (MAKE SURE you're familiar with making proper backups in case you want to revert back to previous builds/ROMs), or even the CM10 Preview builds.
Good luck!

Sorry to Hijack .But isnt it like a Pain to Root the Official ICS update ,wouldnt it be easier to root on 2.3.5 and install CWM and then flash ? Im not second guessing you ,I just got my Nitro HD today but been reading that the process to root ICS is kind of long and tricky.

You could be right. I rooted mine back on 2.3.5 so I haven't gone through any of the hassles as have been stated with rooting from official ICS. I shall adjust my original post.
Doble check.
OP double check your baseband version cuase if its 2.3.5 V10j ,it has been stated that its nearly impossible yet doable after many tries.
To be honest, I don't know more details about the android world. Can someone plz link the basics of android like cwm, adb & so I can have some basic knowledge about it.
Actually, I feared I would brick it.
And thanks guys for the replies.

Try the official ics before custom ics, it's WAY faster than official gingerbread, it's stable and once debloated it's pretty perfect as it is to me.
Then if you want to taste something else, try the cm9/10 but I would let them as a second passage to ics/jb.
For the official rom you can either flashing with lg tool (using the before - after rooting method brianlily posted here) or go with cwm as stated by rani9990, it should be the same.. the substantial difference is that if you don't put the cwm recovery before ics, then you'll need to go through partial unbrick process to revert back to gingerbread, because on ics the cwm won't be possible to install.

[Q] Can't flash KT747 kernel on Slim Bean Rom?

I've tried flashing kernel, wipe cache/dalvik, rebooting, and then installing the Slim Rom file over it.
Anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?

98% Sure you are trying to mix an AOSP based ROM with a TW (Stock) type Kernel. That doesn't typically work. There is an option for the AOSP version of Ktoonsez kernel though that _should_ be a better fit with that ROM.
Have fun and continue to read up *Grin*
The thing is, I'm almost positive I downloaded the AOSP version for the KT747 kernel

That's a good start, the AGAT says LJ7 based in the Post, leading one to believe it is for TW ROMS. And on the Ktoonsez it does have a download link for either TW or AOSP. One you are looking for should be named "KT747-Kernel-AOSP-JB-SPR-12-11-2012.zip". Verify that and speak up again if you are still having issues.
Yes, I'm certain that was the file I flashed, because I remembered noting that the file was 7.72MB prior to downloading.
Also, I'm sure that the Slim Rom is compatible with the KT747 kernel because several posts were made on the thread saying that
the battery life was amazing, which made me wonder if I was doing something wrong.

Reading your original post, The order should go 1) ROM then 2) Kernel ... Then Wiping Cache and Dalvik-Cache (And other wipes if needed). Reason for this is if you flash the Kernel first, then the Rom you are over writing the custom Kernel with whatever is packaged with the ROM.
That is the only other obvious thing I see at this point. Hope that helps..
Did you flash the kernel fix that slim says you need to flash in order to run another kernel? Guess you didn't...

See that now, thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.
Please report back on how you like it, and if you really notice any differences.
It dropped 1% in approximately 30 minutes, half of the time the screen was just on, other half I left it on my desk (all while connected to Wifi).
My settings are 96/1998 on ktoonservative.
In my opinion, so far its amazing as compared to other AOSP roms I've tried.

If your using the I9300, i would check the thread for that phone. Otherwise you risk bricking it flashing something from this one.. This is for the US Variant SPH-L710.
Go here for all the I9300 stuff, Please save yourself a bricked phone. Thanks! http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1563
Will do, thank you!

ROM?

I have been trying to search for a V20c AT&T rooted ROM that has CWM already in it. All I found is threads with people talking about this subject but no ROM. Is this ROM available? If so, can someone link me to it? CM10 battery life SUCKs big time and I would like to try stock that's rooted and has CWM. Thanks!

To clarify a misunderstanding that you have ROM's DO NOT contain CWM. CWM allows you to install ROM's. If you are running CM10 you must have by default CWM or equivalent like TWRP. Just look for your ROM of choice and install through CWM. Since you are looking for v20c I would recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980541. However, HO! NO! also has one that is 100% stock plus there are several others that are available under development.

If you are still wanting to run JB check out one of the one click Installers. I suggest the rooted wipe all version. Remember the wipe version will format your internal sdcard so back up anything you need first. These will get you back to the JB file system and got should be able to flash any of the ROMs available here. Good luck
I've done every jb one click ..rooted, unrooted full restore with Odin on my PC. Not one will work. Just stays in boot loop. But ics and gb flash just fine

Questions belong in the Q and A section, not development.
Also, users are expected to read what is offered in the threads. XDA is not a support site, so some work is expected of members here...
Here are two links, along with the one above, where you can start your journey.
