Hi I'm relatively new to android but have flashed WM & Symbian before and recently got a DHD unlocked on 2.33. Presently not rooted.
This was something I was just gonna look into and try customs ROMS. But now i have a problem from last night hopefully someone here can help with please.
The phone froze so i took out battery to restart, but on reboot the touch screen won't work so I cant unlock it or anything. I would prefer not to factory reset just yet as the last back up i did to export contacts and sync to windows (vista) contacts was a few weeks ago. So am trying to find another solution and more info from experts here.
I have restarted the phone in BOOT mode and now have 4 options:
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
SIMLOCK
IMAGE CRC
Is there a way to reset the phone to see if it is purely a software issue without wiping the contacts data? Or a way to access recovery mode to back up the contacts data, even if this means placing some file on an SD card and accessing it via recovery mode to copy contacts data from the phone to SD card? and are their any other options or tools i can use to back up the data.
EDIT
BTW the phone hasn't been dropped or damaged to precipitate the screen fault.
Rebooting from recovery mode didn't help, problem persists. In the extra options in recovery what does "wipe cache partition" do? could that help?
or is there a recovery image i can use to reflash from SD card without wiping the data?
As when one updates the rom from say froyo to gingerbread the data is kept intact.
Or is it possible to image the rom to sd then access the data before i hard reset.
Any advice or help gratefully received.
If you have usb debugging on, you can access your phone through ADB from your pc. Don't know if there are any other options.
Wiping the cache partition doesn't do anything to the contacts and so on.
Sent out of my Free-Candy-Van. Your kids are safe in there. Trust me.
tbh i cant remember if debugging is on or off now, i do remember enabling it at some point but whether i left it on i can't remember and have no way of telling. But am willing to give adb a go...do u have any more info or a link please?
The issue is that ever since I flash my phone with the GB27 stock ROM and get everything setup I lose at least half of my installed applications on my phone when ever my phone crashes and have to reset it.
I did root my phone and install recovery (AGAT_GB27_repack.tar) by using Mobile ODIN and can go days or weeks without a issue or it can be with hours when this happens.
I have tried flashing GB27 two different ways, one I would use ODIN and use the already rooted ROM SPH-D710_GB27_1014481_Rooted_Restore.exe after getting GB27 stock on it and the other way is use the Samsung Simple Upgrade Tool to install the stock ROM and then use Framaroot to root it, I have formatted data, system and cache before I redo everything, and backed up my internal "sd card" and formatted it.
I just re-did the phone last night and got everything setup again, and today I was going to try to do a backup in recovery and just restarted my phone and when the phone booted back up I had lost half of my applications again just from a restart.
What happens is some will show a android icon with a SD card symbol and just says "Application not installed" and other applications just disappear, I have not found anybody having this exact issue. I have tried uninstalling a few of these applications but it just says " Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card" . I still see the data files in android\obb folder from games etc, even if the icon is missing or appears to be corrupted, I did delete these files when I re-did the phone and re-download everything from Google play.
I also have a 32GB external card that I keep pictures, videos, music and backups on, but never had an issue with it before.
Thanks for any help anybody can give on this, I am kind of at a lost right now.
I might have fixed the issue, I could never get mass storage to work in recovery, so, I search and found Agat_GB27_v1.3.0.tar and flash that in ODIN and mass storage worked with that and all my applications came back, so, could a recovery kernel cause these kind of problems?
Probably not the recovery portion. But definately the kernel portion. Glad you got it figured out. Delete that other kernel from your phone so you dont install it again and have the same headache.

Let me first apologize for all of the information, but I wanted to give you guys as much to go on as possible.
TLDWR - Can't flash roms, can't decrypt phone, can't wipe data, can't mount internal storage, can't use ODIN....where next?
Here is what I got:
SPH-L710
Android vers - 4.2.2
Cyanogenmod vers - 10.1.0-d2spr
Was getting flaky reception when I was on 10.0.0 nightly, decided to update to 10.1.2. Downloaded the the required files through Rom Manager, rebooted into CWM Recovery version 6.0.3.1 (non-touch) and did the install (dirty)....booted up and the ROM itself worked, but all my apps were getting "stopped unexpectedly". I figured, ok, did a dirty update so stuff isn't working; I'll redo it and this time wipe everything (after backup of course). When I went to do this, I noticed that it did not mount my sdcard (internal storage, not external sd card). I thought was odd, tried manually mounting, didn't work, tried rebooting recovery and that didn't work. Thought maybe it was a fluke, tried wiping and reflashing 4.2.2 (CM 10.1.2).....it went very quickly. Rebooted, and all of my stuff is gone, which is good, but now it won't let me restore apps.
At this point, I decided I'd had enough of trying to upgrade, so I decided to downgrade back to my old CM 10.0.0....long story short, the flash went quickly, booted up, things worked, but still had the same problem with the apps. I could see the data on the internal storage when the phone was booted, but it never saw it in recovery mode. After doing some reading, I saw where the filesystem changed when going to 4.2.2 so that you can use the new profiles feature. This seems to be what caused CWM Recovery to not see my internal storage anymore.
I thought well, maybe it's because I am back on 10.0.0, so I tried downloading and flashing 10.1.0. It did the same quick flash and showed after boot that I was running on 10.1.0, but I still couldn't mount internal storage (sdcard) in Recovery. I said screw it, reinstalled my apps and decided to truck on with how it was. Short version here - installed mobileiron and touchdown, ran through the encryption in mobileiron, etc etc...mobileiron didn't recognize touchdown and I could not get LEAP for wifi to work.
Decided I would try to decrypt and completely wipe phone. Removed Mobileiron as administrator, tried to decrypt - could not. Tried tweaking security settings, reboots, adb mount and format - all to no avail. Tried wiping in recovery....this failed because it cannot read my storage (because it can't mount it and it is now encrypted)!
With the phone booted up and running adb shell, I can get to the main file system, but my sdcard, data, data/media directories all look empty. I can't mount sdcard through ADB either.
When all of this failed, I looked to ODIN to fix my woes...no luck here either. Downloaded the stock Sprint ROM (4.1.1 L710VPBLJ7 L710SPRBLJ7 ) and tried flashing it but I get hung up on the "Setup Connection"...in ODIN. I have tried multiple drivers, usb ports, battery pulls, etc...I even tried from another PC.
I know this is a lot of information and I apologize again. If you read through all that, thanks for being thorough...if not, I will answer your questions, but hopefully won't have to repeat a bunch of info again.
My end all questions are - where do I go from here? What other options do I have? Is there any repair place I might be able to take this to that they might be able to decrypt/flash the phone to stock for me?
Thanks in advance,

Where did you download your stock Rom from? Did you FULLY uninstall drivers from Windows, before reinstalling?

I got the link to the stock stuff through ODIN from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539
Missed your other question the first time I read your post....Yes, I uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, reinstalled the drivers. Tried connecting on another PC as well.
Ok, little bit of an update.
I went through Recovery and was messing around trying to mount and wipe...I couldn't mount data or sdcard, so I figured I couldn't just format them either. WRONG! I was able to format /data and /data/media, which then let me mount /data. After doing this, I rebooted recovery and I could mount sdcard...so I did and formatted it.
Now, I had my old version of CM 10.0.0 on my external sd card, so I installed that and booted up...WOOT - back to blank CM 10.0.0!
Now I've got all my data and apps saved to a folder on my PC, if I can just figure out a way to put them back on the phones storage and restore from my backup...

It's sounds as if you should start a totally clean install, then backup your downloaded apps with Titanium Backup after you get ROM setup again.

Another update:
I couldn't get my backup to restore correctly....I kept getting an error restoring /data. Luckily I had an older backup from several months further and was able to restore that. After doing so, I had to remove my google accounts, readd them, and reinstall my mobile iron client for work and I am now good to go!
Man, that was a nightmare.....thought I had soft-bricked my phone.
How do I mark this thread as solved now?

It worked. Thans. It looks like this is the only solution!!! I wonder why the OS does not let people decrypt the phone......
Same Issue

Unfortunately I do have the same issue. The problem is I have not backed this up previously. Any suggestions?
hey guys
I'm completely desperate. Here's what happened the last two days:
Yesterday my Fairphone suddenly became very slowly and then wouldn't boot no more. Since then every time I try to start my phone, I get the message "process system doesn't react" or something like that. The only thing thats working is the recovery mode.
Today I wanted to make a complete backup so that I can make a hard reset afterwards. But then I had to realize, that the recovery mode isn't able (or I'm not able to see how) to make a backup on an external sd card but only on the internal storage (which is also called sd card which confused me about an hour).
The problem now is that I have a backup but I can't get it on my computer or on my external sd card and so it will be deleted too if I make a hard reset.
I searched the internet for hours and found out, that it is possible to somehow remote control the phone via adb. I read that the phone has to be in "usb debugging mode". I can just put my phone into adb sideload mode or however its called by choosing "update with adb" in the recovery menu.
Is this the reason why my "adb pull" command isn't working? It just says "error: closed". Or is it because I haven't wrote right the path of the backup file? (I used: /mnt/sdcard/userdata_20130801_134656.backup)
Please help me! I have tried so much already, my brain is sizzling:silly:
I'm working on a Mac and have installed sdk.
Thanks in advance!!!

EDIT:
Just to close this topic and maybe help other people with the same issue:
I finally managed to pull the /data folder using adb. What I didn't know was that the backup file (and all pictures, videos, music and so on too) is stored on the internal sd card which isn't affected by the factory reset in the recovery menu. What I also found out was that the backup file (that I had created during the "bootloop" or whatever it was) was corrupted. So the backup logically broke my FP again after I restored from it.
So the solution, as mentioned above, was to pull the /data folder which contains all important user data such as wifi passwords, contacts, messages and so on
I hope it helps
peace

Hi guys, got a tough one here that's a combo of hardware and human error.
My old HTC One M7 started not being recognized at all when plugged into a PC. It would charge, but the PC would not recognize anything as attached. Not even an unknown device. On the phone, USB debugging is enabled, but there's no prompt for changing connection type. At the same time, Google photo suddenly became corrupted. It first prompted that Photos is corrupt and for me to reinstall the app. Upon reinstallation, it would get stuck at "getting photos", before eventually crashing to the original prompt, saying Photos need to be reinstalled. Uninstalling/reinstalling, wiping cache/dalvik cache, and finally factory reset wouldn't fix either issue. I went on and wiped the System thinking I had a working nandroid backup. But I forgot I had deleted it to save space. So as of now, the M7 has TWRP 2.8.3 running perfectly, but no OS. Did I basically brick my phone, since there doesn't appear to be a way to push a ROM onto the phone?
