[Q] Bricked Galaxy SII ... what to do with it? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi, I have a hard-bricked Samsung Galaxy S2 (device shows up as QHUSB_DLOAD) from Telus (same model as from T-Mobile).
I already have a different phone so it's not pressing, but I would be curious about having it repaired.
Interestingly, aside from the hard-brick state - the phone has another issue. I honestly think the phone has bad memory or some hardware issue because the thing would crash routinely regardless of using stock rom or custom roms. Since day #1 with stock rom it would crash routinely. Flashing a custom rom seemed to make no difference; phone still would crash routinely in the same places. Of course, this was before I bricked it (accidentally installed wrong kernel)...
So I guess my question is, is this phone worth anything? I might be willing to spend up to $75 for repair. Seems like a better option than just collecting dust or thowing it away. Can I send this directly to Samsung? Or another service provider?
Your tips are appreciated.

well, a working phone is worth $200-300 on eBay depending on condition.
Otherwise, I find old electronics make for good target practice

I highly recommend this site. I cost $50 to fix it and they are pretty fast getting it back to you.

Just got off live chat with Samsung. The device is still under warranty so I guess I'm going to try my luck with that. Going to UPS to send it now...

Did you try to reflash it with Odin? and if nothing works--that phone is still worth a couple hundred dollars bricked.

You can use it as a nice fancy paperweight. Or you can drop it from a 10 story window and see what happens... our you can send it to Samsung for repair. Your decision.

Just got it back! Luckily they just went ahead and replaced the mainboard
It appears to have solved the frequent crashing issue as well - phone works perfect.

[Q] Gnex "boardswap" after failing wifi

I couldn't turn on wifi anymore, the switch stayed greyed out and 1 out of ten times i could switch it on it kept giving the message "turning on wifi". The phone got really hot on the backside next to the camera lens so i send it for repair (Dynafix - Netherlands) now my gnex is repaired and they did a "boardswap" (?) this means that they replaced the whole motherboard? Is this a good thing? An second question, could the wifi module be defect because of flashing roms?
Thanks very much

Yes they likely replaced the whole motherboard.
No, roms should not harm your wifi module.
Overclocking and excess heat might be able to though.
Flashing ROMs normally doesn't do anything to the motherboard, itself, but if flashing the wrong radios, or installing the wrong drivers could cause such a problem...
But as long as the phone is working, all is good, don't you think?
If you ask me, I do it this way:
(This is an example only). Phone broke, phone bootloops, with stock ROM, flashing a new ROM won't help, I phone my carrier, I get a replacement, if I don't like the device anymore, I phone again, say the device I got is also defect, I get a new phone of my choice, for free...
I have had to do this twice (hTC 7 pro and Samsung Galaxy S II, yet the GS II was really defect, so was the 7 pro), now I've got a GNexus, it won't boot, doesn't show up, at all, neither as OMAP, or anything. I could probably JTAG it, but as I regret buying the phone, because I miss the button, and I don't want to risk the same think happening, I phoned up my carrier, I'm getting a GS 3 on Friday...
(I will still help with GNex problems, though)
Thanks for your answers, very clear! By reading this i think i broke it myself because for a while i had an older radio with a ics 4.0.4 rom but i can't recall the exact time wifi died on me. Well.... my gnex is fixed for free (warrenty) a little more reading before flashing Thanks again for the answers!

What? installing the wrong drivers on your computer has nothing to do with the motherboard on your phone. My HTC drivers don't affect my nexus, why would they? Flashing a radio won't hurt the motherboard either. It may disable the wifi but it won't physically break the motherboard.

[Q] Touch Screen gone haywire

After flashing the stock google (yukju) roms on my galaxy nexus, everything went fine for a couple of months and now I am getting weird haywire issues with my touch screen. Without me touching anything, the phone will act like a part of my screen is being touched, it will not respond when I am indeed touching it at times, the screen will flicker back and forth and generally act strangely. Then for the other 70% of the time it is fine. I have re-flashed all stock roms, did a factory reset, and the problem persists.
Is anyone else having these problems?
any idea what to do next.
After contacting my provider, they said they cant help me because I had unlocked the phone. I have since relocked the phone so I might try calling back and seeing if it will fool them, but I doubt it. Now that I have re-locked the phone should I try to deal with Samsung?
Any help appreciated!
It sounds like a hardware issue. Most likely the touchscreen itself is bad. If you still have warranty or insurance coverage then bring it back to the store and tell them it is defective. By the way, NEVER mention that you have ever unlocked or rooted your phone.

Thanks for the reply. Im worried that, like you say, it is a hardware issue because I bought it used, and therefore will probably have problems with warranty/insurance. My carrier has already said that they wont help me with it so I would have to go right to Samsung. Any tips on dealing with Samsung? I have already returned to stock and re-lock the phone and I never rooted it, I certainly wont say I did anything to it in any way. Anything else I should be aware of? Will they even help me out since I wasn't the one who bought the phone in the first place?

Although most manufacturers offer a 1 year warranty on hardware, I doubt they will honor it since you were not the original owner. Your next option is repairing it yourself. It took a look at prices on eBay and it looks like the digitizer (touchscreen) for a galaxy nexus goes for about $30 and the combination of digitizer and LCD screen go for about $150. I don't know how difficult it would be to separate the digitizer from the LCD on your phone, but $150 for the set is still better than buying a new phone.

As has been said, it is probably a hardware issue - I had an HTC Desire S before my GNex and had the same issue with it, started all of a sudden. (The screen would go haywire as you said, almost as if a ghost was pushing buttons quickly - that's the best way I can describe it). Mine did not have warranty coverage because I had rooted and unlocked it but the HTC rep was helpful and said it happens sometimes because of moisture or humidity or some such thing and to replace the lcd/digitizer. Cost me a little ($110) but phone was as good as new after that, used it for six months before selling it and buying the GNex.

My SII is going nuts

It happened in the past, but got worse in the past few days. The phone is barely usable.
Basically the phone ignores on whatever you try to click on and starts doing things on its own. Typing, clicking, calling and other crap. I am running rooted and already tried running stock, but same results. Ideas? It's out of warranty, though..
Have you tried Odin back to stock, or a custom ROM, to see if its software or hardware related?
Maybe you have a faulty touchscreen?
Sent from my potato running GLaDOS
Yeah, like Loop suggests, I would wipe like a mofo.... Clean everything out, then Odin to stock. Prove that for a few hours, then root and get back on a custom ROM.
Trying this should at least help you narrow down h/w versus s/w problem.
T989, AOKP JB MS1 (KK nightly)
I've tried resetting to stock, but no results. Gave a call to T-Mobile, but they were helpless and told my phone is out of warranty. It's indeed out of warranty, expired in Oct.
Then decided to call to Samsung and the rep immediately informed me that my phone is under warranty. Pretty cool stuff. After all, I sent the phone to Samsung service center in TX. The issue they found called "touchpad failure" and solution "replaced LCD". The smartphone is already shipped to me. I'll get back with the results when I get the phone.
If you think your phone is out of warranty, don't be so sure and call to Samsung!

Hard Bricked! Help (T999/mobilicity)

I have a 9 month old S3 (T999/Canadian/Mobilicity Variant)
I had a ROM on there since day 2, but recently *this week* had a lot of hard lock ups. I could manage a reboot if I pulled the battery.
I tried 3 diff roms CM10, AOKP, and a recent 4.1.1 (all without apps) all worked but still caused the hard lock requiring a reboot.
It was annoying as you know what, but I was testing diff options wondering if the lockups were the OS/an app/or hardware.
Last night the phone was working on AOKP 4.2.2 while on the charger. I woke up and noticed it was hard locked, so I batt pulled, rebooted and went to sleep.
Now (this morning) it wont boot at all. I thought maybe it was the charger or the battery. I swapped batteries with a different S3, mine still does not boot.
So. What now?
Time for S4 and lose a $600 phone? Time to go to a Samsung or Carrier shop?
Have you tried Odin? Plug it into a computer see if things register if so go further with Odin.
I'd say that and see if it persist while on a stock then don't install your apps, if problem still persist call Samsung or whom ever and see about that. Or get it up and running and if steady put on Craigslist then get s4....

Google search that piece "QHSUSB_DLOAD" and see what it is. I've never seen that. Install Odin (in the dev section) and see what happens (read that thread) I'm at work on mobile or I'd give you links. Just a little reading and no panicking and you might get out of this alive lol.

That is found on XDA and the interwebs as a bricked device. it applies to captivate/HTC/s3 others.
I downloaded odin, but I can't get into download mode Power+Home+VDown (Nothing happens)
I didn't flash an incorrect ROM, since my phone was working, it bricked itself over night? Power Surge?
Aerowinder, if I am under warranty, can i take it to my carrier/samsung for repair? I can't get into Download mode.
Call them up and find out. It might be failing/tired internals/hardware... Did you have your phone over clocked at all in the 9 months, just curious?

I had the exact same problem and was still under the warranty and they exchanged it. I just told them that I plugged my phone before going to bed and when I woke up I wasn't able to turn it back on.
I actually remember this now. This a bug not common but its here for users on all D2 SIII decices... They've publically admitted it

Ya I suggest just avoiding the headache of trying to fix, tell them you plugged it in over night to charge and now its completely dead and that its been acting weird for a while before. You should be good.

Not sure how this is going to turn out. The carrier refused to do the warranty, and gave me the # to samsung canada. I went to the Samsung Canada store, where they took the phone and gave me a GNexus (loaner)
So... lets hope they dont see the romming, my triangle should be 0.
If they do figure out my romming and their quote to fix is absurd, I will get HTC1 and repair the S3 on my own time.
I prefer Apple's warranty to be honest.
Does anyone know how much 3rd party Brick repair should cost? In the crap chance Samsung gets me for ROMing

Update:
7 days after submitting for service, the phone came back from a 3rd party repair shop in Burnaby, BC. PBA replaced due to bad BGA (Ball Grid Array)
So I guess they couldn't boot it to see the root.
Working fine. The new phone came back carrier locked, original unlock # worked again.

I Hard Bricked my Samsung Galaxy S3 and if you dont mention anything about rooting they will give you a new one no questions asked. Now if you dont have a warranty or some type of insurance then call samsung and see what you can do about it. i did a warranty exchange and i got a new one. As long as you dont mention brick or root you will be find they will right it down as defective.

Bricked ATT Note4 after software update. What do i do?

I finally was forced to update to android 5.0.1. I updated at work but it failed halfway through and is now in a boot loop. I've tried every solution the internet can provide me. What do I do now? The device IMEI has a limited warranty until 2017. I purchased through swappa. I have original box but no documentation besides the barcode sticker on the side. Will AT&T replace this? It was their update that caused this anyway. Any experiences with this sort of thing please? I dropped a large chunk of change on this paperweight. Thanks

The first thing to do is find a local Best Buy with a Samsung Experience shop. They can reflash the firmware or send the phone in for repairs. This would be the best and easiest option. Most likely, you'll be able to get everything fixed in around an hour max.
BTW, it doesn't matter if the device was purchased from somewhere other than Best Buy!
I'm not sure if ATT will replace the phone if you didn't buy it from ATT. You can contact them to see though. Call them and tell them that you bought the device from Swappa. Though, most likely, they'll turn you away unless they have some sort of business alliance with Swappa.
Do this as a Plan B.
The third option is to get in contact with Swappa. I don't know anything about that service though. Usually in order to claim warranty, you need the device and proof of purchase. If Swappa has an online receipt, or even just an online purchase history, that should work. They most likely would just need some sort of proof that you actually bought the device from or through them. Like I said, I don't know anything about Swappa, so you'll have to contact them to get specifics of what you'd need.
When all else fails, go directly to Samsung. Again, tell them that you got the device from Swappa. Though, this would basically be like the first option, except that it would take longer.
All options except the first one may result in you getting a refurbished replacement. Just an FYI. The only way that Best Buy will give you a refurbished replacement is if they were to send the phone back to Samsung and it was replaced.

Hey, thanks a lot. This may be the single most helpful forum post I've ever read. I will drive up to BestBuy tomorrow and give it a shot. I wasn't able to flash a AT&T stock rom through Odin, but I guess it's worth a shot. I believe the flash failure was due to the AT&T bootloader being locked?

Welcome!
Most likely something just went wrong during the installation. The bootloader is not a factor in this matter since all ATT Note 4s have it locked and the firmware is meant for this phone.
Now, if you had the phone rooted (permanently), installed a custom kernel and recovery, etc, then the update failure would be 100% explainable. But since you can't do any of that with this phone, then the most likely cause is just "sh1t happened" or the installation was interrupted (like battery died).

I used Kies, Kies3 and Swap Sync or whatever to do an emergency restore. All of them failed. Kies 3 recognized the phone and was 98% done downloading the firmware and then failed.
Also i am not rooted and never attempted a root (on this phone anyway).
Good news. Just got off the phone with AT&T and they have a replacement on the way. Thanks for your help everybody. We have achieved the best case senario for me as i was having problems with the volume buttons anyway
I would consider this case solved.

Awesome! Win-win for you (I guess?)
If the volume keys were messed up, then I wonder if there was some other problems with the phone too. Ones you couldn't see... ones that prevented proper firmware installation.
