So, I was doing some reading around a few of the majors posts and realized that I should probably update my modem. I'm running an older version of CM10 nightly (11-14, really stable and hesitant to upgrade to CM10.1 due to a few issues it still has). The modem I have is still the Out-of-Box modem that came with the phone. If I update to UVLJA per the modems post, is there anything else I need to do other than flash the modem? What are the benefits of updating the modem?
Thanks
Ref modems post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31409259
Just flash and reboot. I've done a few and find the latest to be best for me with signal in places I usually didn't get a signal. Although it might have a negative effect also. It depends on where you are located, what buildings you are in and so forth.
Great, thanks. Just flashed the new modem and the connection seems smoother already.

Good news
You can safely update to CM10 12/16. That's the last CM10 nightly. I ran that build for weeks and never had a problem.

Some people including myself experienced issues with that nightly, I had reboots with it and calls having delay issues (it would ring but I could not answer it until after the 3rd or so ring)... besides he isn't asking which is the latest nightly he should use.
Giving opinions on closely related topics is no longer allowed here? Thank you for pointing out the issues with reboots. I have not personally experienced them, however.

What works for one doesn't always work perfectly for another, no point in arguing about it.
I just went on a modem flashing rampage.. Don't know if it's best to let the radio sit or not but I found the UVLI3 modem to be best for me according to speed test. I'm in the NY/CT area and used the sonic tools modem flashing kit. I Got 13mps which isn't bad lol

Its tough to test that way cause of high traffic hours on weekends. I do that at night during the week when everyone else should be sleeping. Insomnia at its finest lol.

For the record, I did search through the various radio threads, but I couldn't find me solution.
I'm sorry, but I've been away from the G2 scene for a while, but what's the latest/best radio for a T-Mobile USA G2, running CM7 in the NorthEast - New York, Boston area? Thanks in advance, fellas!
If everything is working don't flash a radio. Only flash radio if you have issues related to radio. If it ain't broke don't fix it

I'd tend to agree. You'll always find people claiming every single radio is working great for them. If your service is good and you're not having lots of issues I wouldn't mess with it.

Thanks guys. I tried a few radios, and they all seemed to work alright. The reason I was asking is because I wanted to know if there was a known problem with a specific radio I may have overlooked, however, after search, I didn't find anything, so I thought I'd ask you guys. Thanks!
Not true. Use the radio that CAME with the rom. Tmobile releases a rom and radio together for a reason. So if your talking about the ginger leak, the .30 radio is the one that was released with that. Of course you don't HAVE to change it, but why wouldn't tmobile just not update the radio from froyo if there was no reason or nothing to be gained? The rom was built to work SPECIFICALLY with that radio. If we were talking about a custom rom, then ya I agree with everything said above. Since were talking about a stock rom, its a little different.
Radios are flashed through the bootloader. The chance of bricking or messing anything up when flashing through a bootloader is .0000000001% if not lower. So if you got an extra five min in your life go flash that .30

Thank you for all your input. I resolved this issue by testing out various radios to see which performs best for me. I found one which got me from ~2 MBPS consistent to ~3-5 MBPS consistently in the same location

May I ask which Radio version did the magic to bump up your performance?
Well, maybe two and a half.
I was using FB17 on my old black ET (bought on launch week), before it was bricked.
GPS would not connect. Vlingo was very broken - would not work with a bt car kit unless you manually unlocked the screen.
It was very snappy in my testing though.
I now have a brand new white ET, and I tried FC14.
Exact same problems. None of those were fixed in the last 3 1/2 weeks.
Thank god someone has figured out that you can simply remove vlingo garbage and replace it with a number of dialing apps like google voicedialer. I don't know if it can be done on ICS, but it works very well in EL29 gb roms.
So, GPS is a deal breaker right now, possibly on two somewhat different versions of hardware (old black et vs white new et.) What the hell are the developers thinking not fixing gps?
Also, FC14 was noticeably choppier than both EL29 and FB17. Maybe it was because of the particular widgets/software I used, I don't know. Could be a problem too.
Anyway, any thoughts?

When I started flashin ICS Roms...Couldn't get a lock or very spotty coverage...I tried all the Apps out there for GPS...None worked...What worked best has been used by many people on here...for me it worked the first time and I always get a lock...Here's the deal...
If you are willing to take the time to do it, this seems to work for everyone:
Odin one click back to Gingerbread
Odin flash kernel w/ recovery
Restore nandroid (optional)
Get GPS lock on Gingerbread and keep it on.
Boot to recovery and flash format all zip and ROM.
So Odin one click back to el29 GB...
get CWM there as well...Get your lock...leave it on...Go to CWM...restore your ICS Rom of choice...Reboot...ICS will open up and you will have GPS lock...works everytime...At least it has for me and a lot of people on here...
GPS was the Deal breaker for me as well...I use it a lot...Now I have an ICS Rom for my Daily Driver...
Well GPS hasn't been a strong point for Samsung in general. The devs your referring is Samsung, right? They have the necessary tools, like source code and non-gpl drivers. I'm pretty sure Samsung will get GPS better on ics at some point.
El29 is very refined. I would totally expect it to run smoother than any ics leak at this point.
I don't use any car/voice mode, so I cant comment on that.

It works for a while. Then you lose gps again. It's too much trouble flashing and reflashing, whereas it should just work.
EL29 calks roms is very nice and smooth. Everything works, with a proper theme it looks a lot like ICS. It's just not worth it putting up with ICS bugs right now.
The only thing I'm really missing from ICS was the browser.
In the two days I've been running FC15 I've experienced none of what you mention. I think it's the luck of the draw with hardware/software and sprint service in your area. Are you updating your profile and PRL after flashing new modems?
FC15 is the smoothest build I've experienced since EL29 (which remains my goto version if the current ICS build doesn't do the job).
Did you do a complete wipe before installing? Did you make sure to flash the full rather than the nodata version if going from GB to ICS?
I'm certainly not insinuating you are incapable of knowing how to flash new builds but sometimes we overlook the simplest steps which leads to major complications.
If you've done all the above (including using Calkulin's format all) and still experience these issues then I'd definitely stick with EL29 for awhile longer.
My gps locks faster than ever. It's insane. I used gps all over CT, RI, and MA this weekend and was perfect. Didn't even get confused by 95 exchange in Providence.

Of course el29 will be smoother it's an official release. It isn't the developers fault GPS is goofy on ics either they been working hard to fix it... maybe you should read the bug list before you flash anything. Nothing will be completely stable until an official release is out thank the devs they got us this far and at least we can use most ics roms as a daily driver... a couple months ago no one can even get ics to function now look were we Are.

I was talking about Samsung developers, not xda developers. Maybe I should have clarified. But I thought it was self-evident, since there's no source code for ICS available yet (and probably won't be for months.)
As for bug lists - ICS roms threads simply don't have them. So please don't patronize and act all butthurt for no reason.

It is hard to not flash and I'm only a recent flashaholic (boy do I wish I'd paid more attention to XDA when I had my EVO 4G, would've saved me the mistake of buying the POS 3D).
After FC07 I was going to stick with EL29 until the official release came out but then the 13, 14 and 15 leaked builds came out with overall good reviews so I dove in again and so far I haven't regretted it.
Official release date, who knows, this is Sprint after all but with the leaks coming fast and furious common sense would dictate it can't be too far off (at least we hope).

You are aware of the difference between "unknown dev-state leaks" versus "official releases", right? Also that devs post leaks for us to test and report back bugs, of which there are multiple threads containing these lists, right? The issues you report have been answered in several threads, several times.
My gps has worked in every FC ICS build so far. (Lucky me I guess)
Few things that don't work, error out.
Accuweather daemon sometimes FC's.
Moving apps to SD card a bit wonkey. Currently doesn't move them to the ACTUAL SD but to "usb storage" on the phone. FC15 only.
A handful of apps still aren't compatible with ICS. (NOT the rom fault).
Signal bar info isn't correct on any build pre FC15.
Market sometimes takes awhile to actually start downloading apps.
GPS sometimes doesn't turn OFF. <- eating your battery VERY quickly.

I wasn't reporting anything. I was just reflecting on how in 3.5 weeks of my absence, the most blatant deal breaker bugs have not been fixed.
I've never flashed an ICS rom but I use FC15 modem with blazer 4.0 and It's possibly the best modem I've used with this phone. Smooth as can be and what seems to be better data speeds than the other modems.

Im on an ICS Rom...just flashed FC15 for test run...
I see 17 and 19 are due out soon...
Someone please help. I've been up and down forums looking for the answer.
I've flashed cm9, aokp, Calkulin's, and quite a few more and now with the official release of ICS for e4gt, the STOCK ROM for it as well.
I've also flashed numerous modems (more than half of what is out there now) and to no avail im getting .16Mb DL and .38Mb UL.
It makes the phone nearly unusable on 3g/4g, yet wifi works perfectly.
I've updated Profile AND PRL, I've done a clean wipe, cache partition, and dalvik. I've pretty much followed every rule there is about rooting and ROMs carefully.
I need some major help or at least someone tell me that I'm doomed with GB for the rest of my phones existence, I really need an answer because its driving me nuts.
All help is beyond greatly appreciated.

indeed i have. i am currently running the new OTA stock, equip with FF18.
I was on a custom TSM_Revamped so i had to force the update. i did not receive the OTA automatically, if that matters.
I had the same issues with Ics. I reverted back to GB roms for my speeds. All I can say is wait a bit and see if some devs push out re worked kernels for the ics since source is out and about. I had best luck with the ff11 modem. But when I updated the profile and prl it became worse. So keep your head high. and hopefully the awesome devs do some magic for the kernals

I'll come back to post and I'll let I you know if I come across some worthy mentions
I have been having issues with 4G after upgrading to FF18 and was wondering if you could give me any insight...
Two friends of mine and myself all have the E4GT and have upgraded to FF18 using the One-Click Factory Reset package.
Pretty much what happens is that when I connect to 4G, my upload speeds are now around 150kbps down and 1500kbps up, when they used to hit around 5000kbps up and 1500kbps down. We are all having the same issue and live in NYC.
I've reverted back to EK02 using your One-Click, ran speedtests again and everything worked fine. I then let the OTA of EL29 install and 4G also works fine on that one. I then tried installing FF18 again and 4G speeds were back at 100-150kbps. I've tried the FF18 rooted, FF18 stock, and tried just using the recovery to run the update package from my SDCard while on stock EL29 and they all yield the same result.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for all of your help!

That's what i had thought at first but i heard the same from people in DC as well as a few other big cities. However the problem isn't consistent and appears to be few and far between with the users having this problem (or they're just not commenting). No one has a definitive answer yet. I'm in the "wait and see" stage since the official ICS has dropped for the e4gt and hope that someone fixes the problem along the line.
ICS is just too pretty not to have lol. If i hear or do anything that fixes the problem, i'll be sure to post it up.
p.s. data speeds are decent in Manhattan though but still not "4g" even thought it shows the bars. It's better but not top speeds.
Sorry I couldn't be much help

It wouldn't have mattered. If you stood on FD19 the 4g would had crapped out on you sooner or later. I started off good I had perfectly working 4g on every ICS builds even on FF 18. It just crapped out on me out of nowhere. Reverting to an older ICS leak does not fix it. Only gingerbread will fix it..

In case anyone in here hasn't heard, there are some new leaks, which fix the 4G issue. I'm on FI03 right now. Check it out here and give props to the devs!
These are leaks btw, so you will need to flash your odin skills.
I plan to purchase a Wind Mobile galaxy s3 tomorrow and I was wondering about the compatibility it will have with ROMs.
I have heard many different things but from what I gather it is that Wind phones are compatible with T-Mobile Roms except for the ones that include things to do with radio. I don't fully understand what this means but I hope I can get a further understanding from the community's response to this thread.
I am not sure if the Nightly even comes with a radio. If it doesn't I heard people saying it would work as long as the rom does not come with the radio. I have no idea what all this means. I hope someone can clarify
The plan I have is to buy the Wind S3 and flash CM10 Nightly straight away with the Lean Kernel. Will it work? If not, is there a way for me to fix it?
Thank you :fingers-crossed:
hey
BUMP!
Looks like people need some encouraging to answer my question
Yes the CM10 nightly will work for you ROMs and radios are mostly kept separate so you don't have to worry about that.

Patience! Its only been a few hours. Ive seen threads go for a day or two before getting answered. Just a matter of when the right person comes across it.
To answer, yes you can flash our roms, but no you cannot use our radios. I'd recommend backing up your current one in case of accidents.
Cm10 should be fine but unless its been addressed expect somewhat slow data speeds and a few other bugs.
Stock on this phone is fantastic believe it or not! So give that a fair run too.
As far as kernel, just make sure the one you use is compatible with CM.
CM roms dont include radios. Most roms dont if they are flashable in cwm or twrp. Be careful if you're using an odin flashable as many do include the radio.

Could you go in to more details about this subject? I do not understand why the data would slow down.
Thanks
Im not sure what the cause is but ive heard a lot of people complain about slow data with cm10, mostly in the modem threads. Udated modems helped for some but not much I dont think. Only other thing ive heard is that its a known issue but the cm team had no plans to address it until they have a stable release.
I haven't kept up with development on cm so you will be able to find much more and up to date info in their thread.

That is exactly what I am running, but you should be prepared for bugs, if you think you are going to get a perfect running rom, your not, if you can't handle, then you better stick with the stock roms.

Could you name some bugs that stand out? I would like to know which bugs bothered you the most.
Thanks

For me, everything works, but keep in mind I DO NOT USE THE STOCK APPS...worthless email/gmail/message. I use Handcent, and K9 email. They work perfect. I uninstall all stock apps on every rom I load, the only bug I see is screen flicker ( which has a fix), the only thing I do not like is when charging and screen is off, no led, so I never know when it is complete on the charge other than using a prog that sounds when charge is complete....I like the nightly's. I flash update every night. Also using AnTuTu speed test, I get high 9000's on the benchmark, my friggin phone IS FAST!!!!
So after flashing a couple of ICS roms i really like calkulin's ICS and will stick with it. But as soon as i went from GB to ICS roms, my signal strength and service in certain areas has gone to *&^%.. Im getting LOS more too.
I determined that it was time to update modems(i was still running el29)
I tried fh23 and FI03 and FI03 seems to be the better out of the two, but my buddy is still on el29 and seems to get better service regularly(i put him on the same version of calkulin's rom as well)
My questions are as follows:
1. What exactly does a modem do?
2. why does sprint release so many, and is there that much of a difference?
3. how do i find out which is the best modem for me?
4. (sounds like a stupid question but here goes) What is the difference between a modem and a radio?
Thanks!!

A modem is the same as the radio. They help bridge the software and the hardware for your radio components. There were so many modems because there was a bunch of leaks we have gotten. You find out which ones best by flashing them. Each phone as well as each area can be different. So you just have to find out.

Thanks for the crazy-fast reply!
I have cracked open quite a few e4gt phones and they all look the same and parts always swap(data ports,camera,glass)..I don't get it..
Is it possible that, collectively, we have made a couple of assumptions only because of the amount of variables(and outcomes) between users that are involved?
I just refuse to believe that these modems are location specific.
I do, however, think they could be hardware-specific being that the e4gt is made in a couple different locations...But, does anybody come across a modem that just DOESN'T WORK on their e4gt?
I believe some of the modems are actually the same. They are just called different because it was a later build date. But it was the same modem. And yes I have had a few just not work. The fd series gave me horrible reception. I'm talking not being able to make one call. Then in the same place moments after I would flash the el29 or fc15 and it would be full bars again.

Is there any thread in which people discuss this topic a little further? I'm interested in getting to the bottom of all this..I'm about to go to sprint right now to see what modem their new phones are running! Also, i have a GF in los angeles..I'll have her do the same..She got her e4gt about a month ago and hers was running fh13 out of the box.

install FI03. It fixes a lot of battery and 4g speed issues. best modem since EL29.
Oh..i just read your signature..Is fb21 still the modem you are using? Why did you choose this one? Why not FI03? Isn't that the newest? Have all of these people really flashed all of these modems or is that overkill? Is my analysis of all of this overkill? LOL
I use FF18 and that works quite well in my area. I haven't tried the newest leak yet but I might soon.

No I am not on fb21. I stopped maintaining my signature when I picked up tapatalk. I am on fi03 right now

I am on FI03 and its the best for signal strength and data speed I have ever had.
If you do not get the same service as your buddy it might not be the modem firmware that is the problem. I was having lots of signal issues and my friend was not. I finally took the phone to sprint and had them run a signal check on it and it failed. I got a replacement phone since mine was still under warranty. The refurbished phone running under FI03 is getting great signal where the other was barely getting anything. So it might not be a firmare issue but a hardware one.
Sprint will charge you $35 for the test.
