So after flashing a couple of ICS roms i really like calkulin's ICS and will stick with it. But as soon as i went from GB to ICS roms, my signal strength and service in certain areas has gone to *&^%.. Im getting LOS more too.
I determined that it was time to update modems(i was still running el29)
I tried fh23 and FI03 and FI03 seems to be the better out of the two, but my buddy is still on el29 and seems to get better service regularly(i put him on the same version of calkulin's rom as well)
My questions are as follows:
1. What exactly does a modem do?
2. why does sprint release so many, and is there that much of a difference?
3. how do i find out which is the best modem for me?
4. (sounds like a stupid question but here goes) What is the difference between a modem and a radio?
Thanks!!

A modem is the same as the radio. They help bridge the software and the hardware for your radio components. There were so many modems because there was a bunch of leaks we have gotten. You find out which ones best by flashing them. Each phone as well as each area can be different. So you just have to find out.

Thanks for the crazy-fast reply!
I have cracked open quite a few e4gt phones and they all look the same and parts always swap(data ports,camera,glass)..I don't get it..
Is it possible that, collectively, we have made a couple of assumptions only because of the amount of variables(and outcomes) between users that are involved?
I just refuse to believe that these modems are location specific.
I do, however, think they could be hardware-specific being that the e4gt is made in a couple different locations...But, does anybody come across a modem that just DOESN'T WORK on their e4gt?
I believe some of the modems are actually the same. They are just called different because it was a later build date. But it was the same modem. And yes I have had a few just not work. The fd series gave me horrible reception. I'm talking not being able to make one call. Then in the same place moments after I would flash the el29 or fc15 and it would be full bars again.

Is there any thread in which people discuss this topic a little further? I'm interested in getting to the bottom of all this..I'm about to go to sprint right now to see what modem their new phones are running! Also, i have a GF in los angeles..I'll have her do the same..She got her e4gt about a month ago and hers was running fh13 out of the box.

install FI03. It fixes a lot of battery and 4g speed issues. best modem since EL29.
Oh..i just read your signature..Is fb21 still the modem you are using? Why did you choose this one? Why not FI03? Isn't that the newest? Have all of these people really flashed all of these modems or is that overkill? Is my analysis of all of this overkill? LOL
I use FF18 and that works quite well in my area. I haven't tried the newest leak yet but I might soon.

I am on FI03 and its the best for signal strength and data speed I have ever had.
If you do not get the same service as your buddy it might not be the modem firmware that is the problem. I was having lots of signal issues and my friend was not. I finally took the phone to sprint and had them run a signal check on it and it failed. I got a replacement phone since mine was still under warranty. The refurbished phone running under FI03 is getting great signal where the other was barely getting anything. So it might not be a firmare issue but a hardware one.
Sprint will charge you $35 for the test.

Would it be possible to use the modem from the Epic Touch 4G phone?
How would you get the modem? If we can't dump it I doubt they can...but even if you did most likely not.

Damn, I always seem to hit the thanks button when quoting. Oh well, have a free thanks
I'm not sure how you get it, whenever a release is leaked for GB, someone has it posted in the development thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123103
I'm on EC05 with a EH07 modem from the latest leak..
EDIT: from reading in the epic touch 4g section, it may not even be worth it. A lot of people are seeing slow data speeds. But then again, that may have nothing to do with the modem??
They don't have gb leaks though. All they have is what is on the device right now, and the noone has had success with pulling a modem that's already on the device. And yeah, most likely the modem is slow, but it also could be sprint throttling...
this is all theoretical, as the modem probably wont work on our epics
The modem in GB leaks is easily pulled out of the tar file. You would need the tar file for installing the whole system on the Epic touch. And since the hardware is different it won't work. It has to address all the radios exactly by code.

/\ ha, I was 3 minutes late, I shouldn't have lite that cigg
Think of modems as drivers (which they are) for pc hardware, its very rare to get a diff driver to work with diff hardware. I don't think the et4g has the same hardware when it comes to the modem/radios.
Screw the modem. What about the drivers for the epic 4g touch slideout keyboard? USB popcorn Popper?

The biggest talk around here has been this EKO2 Modem. Devs have been scrambling to find a way to get back to EG30 so that we can flash the EK02 modem.
Now let me ask the most important question here: How is this EK02 modem?
I have been on EG30 modem w/o seemingly no LOS. I have been on stock rooted, StrongSteve's and now Venum's ROM. I'm yet to encounter any LOS.
For you guys on EG30 who have not really had any problems have you upgraded to EKO2? If so what were your results?
we have a eg30 modem now, a true eg30!
eg30 tar is HERE
But wasn't the big deal about the EG30 Modem the ability to flash the EK02 modem since that couldn't be done from EG31?
Yep. That and the ability to return to full true stock

Yes, but a leak was uploaded last night. The leak is a official tar of EG30 ROM/Firmware Image. This allows us to roll back to EG30 from EG31, or EK02, and EG12.
From the guys coming from EG30 to EK02: do you see any significant differences?

I saw no noticeable difference aside from flaky WiFi connection. The Sprint community forums have people complaining of slower data after the OTA, no data, etc.. It seems to be hit or miss, so I would recommend making sure you've downloaded the EG30 tar in case you decide to go back.
I was on EG30 and moved to EK02 when it leaked about 2 weeks ago. I never had LOS on a EG30 stock kernel, although I did a couple of times on a custom compiled kernel. Still, the areas I frequent around San Diego aren't very LOS prone it seems.
However, after moving to the EK02 modem and stock EK02 kernel, I drove up through central California for the Thanksgiving holiday, through many dead zones and roaming areas. If anyone has ever driven up Interstate 5 from SoCal to NorCal, you know what I'm talking about regarding cell signals. Not one single LOS on the way up or back. If I'm going to get LOS anywhere, it's where every breath I take smells like cow ****.
Otherwise, I've found signal strength and stability to be about the same. My overall take is, there's likely an improvement somewhere in there, but for people like me that didn't experience problems on EG30, it'll be barely noticeable.
What I'm looking forward to however is going back to a custom tweaked kernel now that the EK02 source is available. That'll be the true LOS test ... for me anyways.
Ek02 complete ROM and modem is great. Signal seems more stable (no jumping to no signal to full signal), no LoS, speeds are about the same

Ugh, heres my experience:
Had eg 30 first, los was there, about twice a day. Flashed eg 31, los was horrible but signal was better. Flashed back to eg30 yesterday and flashed the ek02, los is better than eg31 but worse than eg 30. So looks like I'm back to eg 30 and the los script. Gotta say, I think I'm done with samsung after this phone. Between this issue and the basically worthless life my og epic lived, I'm looking at making the switch back to htc.

Right now I am on calk's 2.0.1a with the EK02 and the EK02 modem. The interface has been pretty glitchy but it might have to do with me running the new adw launcher ex update.
I went to disneyland tonight and I had the strangest thing happen... it showed no bars with a 3g signal, then it went down to an edge signal, back up to normal 3g with bars. It would continue this cycle even though I was sitting in the same spot. I restarted with no changes. Starting to doubt this ek02.
On eg31modem with the stock eg30 kernel it was running like butter.

I wouldn't switch if I were you. This is honestly a great phone. I just left the best HTC sprint has at the moment and I am a lot more happy. The fact is the more stuff they cram in it the more stuff can and does go wrong. Do you think someone's electric window motor went out in their car 50 years ago? The only phone your going to find with zero problems is a tin can and string. Samsung has the most solid hardware out now, period. The software is subject to human error. Give it time. I am running stock everything rooted and I have much much better signal. My wifi has and still sucks but it works. But, if jump ship I would just have another phone with different issues. Do what you want, but you will never be content.

Im locked in roaming and on the EG31 radio, I haven't had a LOS in weeks. Im bout to do the PRL hack next. Its definitely a sprint tower issue.

I did and there wont be any, well see what happens and how long they'll allow me to roam. I can get an obscene discount with T-mobile through my job anyway if Sprint drops me.
I went from stock EG30 in the Chicagoland area where I would get LOS multiple times a day, to the leaked EK02 and in several days time I have yet to have one reception issue or LOS.
Seems to be good to go. 4G seems to be able to kick on and connect faster as well.

Once rooted you can use any of those roms. Calkulins and Blazer as well as stock repacks and probably more are available in all the mention versions. Modems affect the phone wifi and data equipment youll have to flash those but you can run any of those. Im running el26 modem and calkulins 2.7 el26. I like it most people doing well on el26.

EL26 for me has its pros and cons. For me its the fastest my phone has responded and runs smooth. However i do experience 1/2 the battery life that i got on previous modems. As i am learning too, it appears to be true that each modem will react different per phone. Best thing to do is test them and go with what suits you best.
When they say do a full wipe, what needs to be wiped?
Just Download Caulks Format all and flash in recovery CLICK HERE
When does the cache partition need to be wiped?
when updating same rom. EX: Miui.12.30.11 > MIUI.1.6.12
what is: /efs /cache /system? Should those be unmounted and formated.
NOPE
what is /emmc?
If you mount USB storage, can you copy files to your SDcard from the pc while in Recovery? Depends what recovery you use, I know Steadys can mount both. Is it like the USB toggle on EVO? read above
Should the SDcard be partitioned at all?
Nope, we have plenty of space
Can you run any ROM with ANY modem? YUP And the build number, is that just the DEV's build number or should it match anything like the baseband/ROM version, etc. See above
Well, maybe two and a half.
I was using FB17 on my old black ET (bought on launch week), before it was bricked.
GPS would not connect. Vlingo was very broken - would not work with a bt car kit unless you manually unlocked the screen.
It was very snappy in my testing though.
I now have a brand new white ET, and I tried FC14.
Exact same problems. None of those were fixed in the last 3 1/2 weeks.
Thank god someone has figured out that you can simply remove vlingo garbage and replace it with a number of dialing apps like google voicedialer. I don't know if it can be done on ICS, but it works very well in EL29 gb roms.
So, GPS is a deal breaker right now, possibly on two somewhat different versions of hardware (old black et vs white new et.) What the hell are the developers thinking not fixing gps?
Also, FC14 was noticeably choppier than both EL29 and FB17. Maybe it was because of the particular widgets/software I used, I don't know. Could be a problem too.
Anyway, any thoughts?

When I started flashin ICS Roms...Couldn't get a lock or very spotty coverage...I tried all the Apps out there for GPS...None worked...What worked best has been used by many people on here...for me it worked the first time and I always get a lock...Here's the deal...
If you are willing to take the time to do it, this seems to work for everyone:
Odin one click back to Gingerbread
Odin flash kernel w/ recovery
Restore nandroid (optional)
Get GPS lock on Gingerbread and keep it on.
Boot to recovery and flash format all zip and ROM.
So Odin one click back to el29 GB...
get CWM there as well...Get your lock...leave it on...Go to CWM...restore your ICS Rom of choice...Reboot...ICS will open up and you will have GPS lock...works everytime...At least it has for me and a lot of people on here...
GPS was the Deal breaker for me as well...I use it a lot...Now I have an ICS Rom for my Daily Driver...
Well GPS hasn't been a strong point for Samsung in general. The devs your referring is Samsung, right? They have the necessary tools, like source code and non-gpl drivers. I'm pretty sure Samsung will get GPS better on ics at some point.
El29 is very refined. I would totally expect it to run smoother than any ics leak at this point.
I don't use any car/voice mode, so I cant comment on that.

It works for a while. Then you lose gps again. It's too much trouble flashing and reflashing, whereas it should just work.
EL29 calks roms is very nice and smooth. Everything works, with a proper theme it looks a lot like ICS. It's just not worth it putting up with ICS bugs right now.
The only thing I'm really missing from ICS was the browser.
In the two days I've been running FC15 I've experienced none of what you mention. I think it's the luck of the draw with hardware/software and sprint service in your area. Are you updating your profile and PRL after flashing new modems?
FC15 is the smoothest build I've experienced since EL29 (which remains my goto version if the current ICS build doesn't do the job).
Did you do a complete wipe before installing? Did you make sure to flash the full rather than the nodata version if going from GB to ICS?
I'm certainly not insinuating you are incapable of knowing how to flash new builds but sometimes we overlook the simplest steps which leads to major complications.
If you've done all the above (including using Calkulin's format all) and still experience these issues then I'd definitely stick with EL29 for awhile longer.
My gps locks faster than ever. It's insane. I used gps all over CT, RI, and MA this weekend and was perfect. Didn't even get confused by 95 exchange in Providence.

It isn't the developers fault GPS is goofy on ics either they been working hard to fix it... maybe you should read the bug list before you flash anything. Nothing will be completely stable until an official release is out thank the devs they got us this far and at least we can use most ics roms as a daily driver... a couple months ago no one can even get ics to function now look were we Are.

I was talking about Samsung developers, not xda developers. Maybe I should have clarified. But I thought it was self-evident, since there's no source code for ICS available yet (and probably won't be for months.)
As for bug lists - ICS roms threads simply don't have them. So please don't patronize and act all butthurt for no reason.

The flashaholic in me wants to try fc15. I know gps wont work in it, from the review qbking77 posted. But maybe it will be as snappy as FB17 was...
BTW, when is the official Sprint ics release due?

FC15 gps does work. I'm getting a lock right now on 8 satellites.

It doesn't work for qbking77, so I assumed it won't work for me.

It is hard to not flash and I'm only a recent flashaholic (boy do I wish I'd paid more attention to XDA when I had my EVO 4G, would've saved me the mistake of buying the POS 3D).
After FC07 I was going to stick with EL29 until the official release came out but then the 13, 14 and 15 leaked builds came out with overall good reviews so I dove in again and so far I haven't regretted it.
Official release date, who knows, this is Sprint after all but with the leaks coming fast and furious common sense would dictate it can't be too far off (at least we hope).

Believe me mine works...EveryTime...Im runnin on FC14 at the moment ...didn't think there is a need to update to 15 since 14 is runnin fine...Everything runs on My Rom...But like I told ya if GPS didn't work Id be back on GB...Right now Im runnin an EL29 Modem on MIJJz BLEND ICS "THE GOODNESS" 2.3...IMO its the hottest ICS Rom out there hands down...Its smooth quick snappy...uou name it...With functioning GPS for me...But if you think you'll be happy with GB go back...Im stickin with the ICS leaks till the final and I think they are Damn close...

You are aware of the difference between "unknown dev-state leaks" versus "official releases", right? Also that devs post leaks for us to test and report back bugs, of which there are multiple threads containing these lists, right? The issues you report have been answered in several threads, several times.
My gps has worked in every FC ICS build so far. (Lucky me I guess)
Few things that don't work, error out.
Accuweather daemon sometimes FC's.
Moving apps to SD card a bit wonkey. Currently doesn't move them to the ACTUAL SD but to "usb storage" on the phone. FC15 only.
A handful of apps still aren't compatible with ICS. (NOT the rom fault).
Signal bar info isn't correct on any build pre FC15.
Market sometimes takes awhile to actually start downloading apps.
GPS sometimes doesn't turn OFF. <- eating your battery VERY quickly.

I wasn't reporting anything. I was just reflecting on how in 3.5 weeks of my absence, the most blatant deal breaker bugs have not been fixed.
I've never flashed an ICS rom but I use FC15 modem with blazer 4.0 and It's possibly the best modem I've used with this phone. Smooth as can be and what seems to be better data speeds than the other modems.

Im on an ICS Rom...just flashed FC15 for test run...
I see 17 and 19 are due out soon...
Someone please help. I've been up and down forums looking for the answer.
I've flashed cm9, aokp, Calkulin's, and quite a few more and now with the official release of ICS for e4gt, the STOCK ROM for it as well.
I've also flashed numerous modems (more than half of what is out there now) and to no avail im getting .16Mb DL and .38Mb UL.
It makes the phone nearly unusable on 3g/4g, yet wifi works perfectly.
I've updated Profile AND PRL, I've done a clean wipe, cache partition, and dalvik. I've pretty much followed every rule there is about rooting and ROMs carefully.
I need some major help or at least someone tell me that I'm doomed with GB for the rest of my phones existence, I really need an answer because its driving me nuts.
All help is beyond greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry if I sound redundant, but have you tried flashing the FF18 Modem? That's the one that just went OTA.

indeed i have. i am currently running the new OTA stock, equip with FF18.
I was on a custom TSM_Revamped so i had to force the update. i did not receive the OTA automatically, if that matters.
I had the same issues with Ics. I reverted back to GB roms for my speeds. All I can say is wait a bit and see if some devs push out re worked kernels for the ics since source is out and about. I had best luck with the ff11 modem. But when I updated the profile and prl it became worse. So keep your head high. and hopefully the awesome devs do some magic for the kernals

I'll come back to post and I'll let I you know if I come across some worthy mentions
I have been having issues with 4G after upgrading to FF18 and was wondering if you could give me any insight...
Two friends of mine and myself all have the E4GT and have upgraded to FF18 using the One-Click Factory Reset package.
Pretty much what happens is that when I connect to 4G, my upload speeds are now around 150kbps down and 1500kbps up, when they used to hit around 5000kbps up and 1500kbps down. We are all having the same issue and live in NYC.
I've reverted back to EK02 using your One-Click, ran speedtests again and everything worked fine. I then let the OTA of EL29 install and 4G also works fine on that one. I then tried installing FF18 again and 4G speeds were back at 100-150kbps. I've tried the FF18 rooted, FF18 stock, and tried just using the recovery to run the update package from my SDCard while on stock EL29 and they all yield the same result.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Sorry dude, i'm still running a GB Rom due to this issue. Haven't found any answer yet either. I'm just trying to be patient until cyanogen adds this to the official beta/nightlies list to reflash and try again. This sucks

I notice that under your name it says your from Brooklyn... As mentioned in my post, my 2 friends and I are in NYC also. 2 of us are in Queens and one in Hempstead.
Maybe it is a location based issue. Something with the towers...

That's what i had thought at first but i heard the same from people in DC as well as a few other big cities. However the problem isn't consistent and appears to be few and far between with the users having this problem (or they're just not commenting). No one has a definitive answer yet. I'm in the "wait and see" stage since the official ICS has dropped for the e4gt and hope that someone fixes the problem along the line.
ICS is just too pretty not to have lol. If i hear or do anything that fixes the problem, i'll be sure to post it up.
p.s. data speeds are decent in Manhattan though but still not "4g" even thought it shows the bars. It's better but not top speeds.
Sorry I couldn't be much help

I've only noticed ping has really sucked on ICS for this phone.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I at least take comfort in knowing Cyanogen is taking a crack at the fix

I'm in NYC, just updated to 4.0.4 (FF18) and see that I should have stayed on the leaked 4.0.3 (FD19) ROM I was already on!! I posted in that other thread. I'm calling Sprint now.

It wouldn't have mattered. If you stood on FD19 the 4g would had crapped out on you sooner or later. I started off good I had perfectly working 4g on every ICS builds even on FF 18. It just crapped out on me out of nowhere. Reverting to an older ICS leak does not fix it. Only gingerbread will fix it..

In case anyone in here hasn't heard, there are some new leaks, which fix the 4G issue. I'm on FI03 right now. Check it out here and give props to the devs!
These are leaks btw, so you will need to flash your odin skills.
