The biggest talk around here has been this EKO2 Modem. Devs have been scrambling to find a way to get back to EG30 so that we can flash the EK02 modem.
Now let me ask the most important question here: How is this EK02 modem?
I have been on EG30 modem w/o seemingly no LOS. I have been on stock rooted, StrongSteve's and now Venum's ROM. I'm yet to encounter any LOS.
For you guys on EG30 who have not really had any problems have you upgraded to EKO2? If so what were your results?
we have a eg30 modem now, a true eg30!
eg30 tar is HERE
But wasn't the big deal about the EG30 Modem the ability to flash the EK02 modem since that couldn't be done from EG31?
Yep. That and the ability to return to full true stock

Yes, but a leak was uploaded last night. The leak is a official tar of EG30 ROM/Firmware Image. This allows us to roll back to EG30 from EG31, or EK02, and EG12.
From the guys coming from EG30 to EK02: do you see any significant differences?

I saw no noticeable difference aside from flaky WiFi connection. The Sprint community forums have people complaining of slower data after the OTA, no data, etc.. It seems to be hit or miss, so I would recommend making sure you've downloaded the EG30 tar in case you decide to go back.
I was on EG30 and moved to EK02 when it leaked about 2 weeks ago. I never had LOS on a EG30 stock kernel, although I did a couple of times on a custom compiled kernel. Still, the areas I frequent around San Diego aren't very LOS prone it seems.
However, after moving to the EK02 modem and stock EK02 kernel, I drove up through central California for the Thanksgiving holiday, through many dead zones and roaming areas. If anyone has ever driven up Interstate 5 from SoCal to NorCal, you know what I'm talking about regarding cell signals. Not one single LOS on the way up or back. If I'm going to get LOS anywhere, it's where every breath I take smells like cow ****.
Otherwise, I've found signal strength and stability to be about the same. My overall take is, there's likely an improvement somewhere in there, but for people like me that didn't experience problems on EG30, it'll be barely noticeable.
What I'm looking forward to however is going back to a custom tweaked kernel now that the EK02 source is available. That'll be the true LOS test ... for me anyways.
Ek02 complete ROM and modem is great. Signal seems more stable (no jumping to no signal to full signal), no LoS, speeds are about the same

Ugh, heres my experience:
Had eg 30 first, los was there, about twice a day. Flashed eg 31, los was horrible but signal was better. Flashed back to eg30 yesterday and flashed the ek02, los is better than eg31 but worse than eg 30. So looks like I'm back to eg 30 and the los script. Gotta say, I think I'm done with samsung after this phone. Between this issue and the basically worthless life my og epic lived, I'm looking at making the switch back to htc.

Right now I am on calk's 2.0.1a with the EK02 and the EK02 modem. The interface has been pretty glitchy but it might have to do with me running the new adw launcher ex update.
I went to disneyland tonight and I had the strangest thing happen... it showed no bars with a 3g signal, then it went down to an edge signal, back up to normal 3g with bars. It would continue this cycle even though I was sitting in the same spot. I restarted with no changes. Starting to doubt this ek02.
On eg31modem with the stock eg30 kernel it was running like butter.

I wouldn't switch if I were you. This is honestly a great phone. I just left the best HTC sprint has at the moment and I am a lot more happy. The fact is the more stuff they cram in it the more stuff can and does go wrong. Do you think someone's electric window motor went out in their car 50 years ago? The only phone your going to find with zero problems is a tin can and string. Samsung has the most solid hardware out now, period. The software is subject to human error. Give it time. I am running stock everything rooted and I have much much better signal. My wifi has and still sucks but it works. But, if jump ship I would just have another phone with different issues. Do what you want, but you will never be content.

Im locked in roaming and on the EG31 radio, I haven't had a LOS in weeks. Im bout to do the PRL hack next. Its definitely a sprint tower issue.

I did and there wont be any, well see what happens and how long they'll allow me to roam. I can get an obscene discount with T-mobile through my job anyway if Sprint drops me.
I went from stock EG30 in the Chicagoland area where I would get LOS multiple times a day, to the leaked EK02 and in several days time I have yet to have one reception issue or LOS.
Seems to be good to go. 4G seems to be able to kick on and connect faster as well.

That's a good question. I think that different ROM\Kernel\Modem combos definitely work better that others. You can always try a different modem and\or kernel and just play around with that until you find one that works best. Flash trifthen's LoSD script. I get LoS roughly twice a day and each time the LoSD script is able to repair the radio without having to reboot my device which is great. So once it detects LoS it's maybe 30 seconds I'm without service and even then I usually still get my texts\VM's.

Thanks. I usually don't get Los using EG31 radio with my current set up. It was just weird that after updating to the "fix" I got Los twice... Lol. I really didn't see people reporting it after updating,
Now I'm back on EG31 cause I can't risk Los. I'll give it another shot once I move to all EK02.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I don't think the radio plays a big part on LOS. I think it is mostly the kernel. Best combo would be the ek02 modem and ek02 kernel.

I've only been testing the EK02 modem a few days since I wanted to wait until there was a way to flash back to the EG30. So far I haven't really noticed much of a difference at all. My 4G speeds have always been good but connection has been sketchy (maybe because of all the buildings in downtown Portland?). 3G speeds are still awful but the phone signal is good as I never have dropped calls. LoS has been pretty consistent but I notice that if I don't switch between 3G\4G\Wifi I usually don't get it at all.
Yes I'm willing to put up with all this **** just for unlimited data

I got LoS on the completely stock ROM too. So while I'm not saying the ROM's aren't playing a part I think dude should have just made a request for a stock EK02 ROM\Kernel to test that theory. To make a thread like that is just ****ty.

Try upgrading to Calkulin's 2.x ROM which is based off the EK02 OTA release.
Just flashing the modem is by itself not going to change anything regarding LOS. It's probably your kernel. People reported a lot of LOS on Rogue 1.1.3. SH just posted a kernel update that includes the EK02 source changes, v1.3.0. I'd flash that and see how it goes. While you're at it, you may want to consider updating to Calk's EK02 based ROM as well.
That's kinda what I was thinking about the kernel playing a bigger part on los, probably helps having the matching radio with it?...maybe?
I think I'll give Calk's latest release today... Time to upgrade.

Depends on if you want a stock or custom compiled EK02 kernel. So either of these two should work well (I would start with Rogue's latest custom kernel ... if you get LOS move to stock) ...

Thanks guys, just had another Los on EG31 wtf Lol. It has to be related to kernel, cause I've flashed a couple different ones to try out yesterday, and ever since Los is my friend now. So maybe the EK02 radio had nothing to do with it.
I like custom kernels, so I'm giving rogue 1.3.0 a shot. If not, Odin bts and start fresh again.

LOS... Might as well be POS...
I went back to bone stock, no root EG30 so I could take the OTA. Took the OTA and left the phone completely stock. That very day I got 3 LOS back to back in about an hour. Next day 2 LOS back to back within about an hour.
EK02 didn't fix LOS. WTF, Samsung?
This is my first Samsung device (that I kept) as I returned my first POS called a Nexus S. This will be my last.
I love the phone otherwise, though.
First post. Seemingly unique problem.
Hi everyone,
I have been reading several posts on the XDA, and would like to thank everyone for the wealth of knowledge and willingness to share it.
I don't mean to hijack the thread, but this is the closest thread subject to my problem, that I could find, without starting my own thread.
I had no issues with LOS or poor battery, etc. with the stock phone at all. The only thing that I noticed was that the wifi would quit working after a few mins, and I would have to toggle it a few times (2-5 times) and it would start working again. Then when the EK02 update got pushed to the phone I noticed a few things were different. I seemed to get GPS lock a lot faster than before, and the other thing was that the wifi connection would get disconnected very frequently (once every 120-180 seconds). And since the phone was constantly disconnecting/hunting/reconnecting the wifi, my battery life took a big hit (was reduced to 1/3 - 1/2 of what it was before)
I tried several modem/kernel combos (Calkulin's) but nothing would fix the problem (other than reverting back to bone stock EG30 modem and rom).
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Especially after the EK02 update? Or does anyone have any ideas about why this might be happening?
Any help/clues are greatly appreciated.

Once rooted you can use any of those roms. Calkulins and Blazer as well as stock repacks and probably more are available in all the mention versions. Modems affect the phone wifi and data equipment youll have to flash those but you can run any of those. Im running el26 modem and calkulins 2.7 el26. I like it most people doing well on el26.

EL26 for me has its pros and cons. For me its the fastest my phone has responded and runs smooth. However i do experience 1/2 the battery life that i got on previous modems. As i am learning too, it appears to be true that each modem will react different per phone. Best thing to do is test them and go with what suits you best.
When they say do a full wipe, what needs to be wiped?
Just Download Caulks Format all and flash in recovery CLICK HERE
When does the cache partition need to be wiped?
when updating same rom. EX: Miui.12.30.11 > MIUI.1.6.12
what is: /efs /cache /system? Should those be unmounted and formated.
NOPE
what is /emmc?
If you mount USB storage, can you copy files to your SDcard from the pc while in Recovery? Depends what recovery you use, I know Steadys can mount both. Is it like the USB toggle on EVO? read above
Should the SDcard be partitioned at all?
Nope, we have plenty of space
Can you run any ROM with ANY modem? YUP And the build number, is that just the DEV's build number or should it match anything like the baseband/ROM version, etc. See above

I haven't experienced any LoS on any ICS roms personally, in fact the only LoS I've experienced was on EL29 roms, ICS seems to hold onto 1-2 bars in low signal areas for me where as I used to have LoS in the same area on GB.
The only complaint I have is WTH is with the damn El29 stock touchwiz/ICS on the leaks??
I thought that they were "upgrading" my phone with ICS not just tweaking it to work like it in hardly noticeable ways.
I really hope they aren't serious about keeping the experience 98% touchwiz like in EL29 because I'm going to dump my phone for a gnex if I need to in order to get away from TW.(It's not that I hate TW it's just getting BORING)

Sorry, but that's how the device is gonna be. TouchWiz runs ON TOP of Ice Cream Sandwich so for a stock experience, you'll have to go with a Galaxy Nexus or a stock rom like AOKP or CM9.

Actually Last time I talked with a rep, yes the phone is covered under TEP. However that was about 18 months ago regarding an Evo I got through Craigslist. Even if you don't have TEP, there is some other program you can exchange your phone through, can't remember what it is though.
Worth digging around if your E4GT is giving you that much trouble. I think this phone is fantastic. Only real trouble I have had with this thing is bricking it while playing around with CM9, then my local Sprint store swapped my phone for another within the hour.
No LOS here but I have had a few times where the phone suddenly showed no bars but then 20 sec later it jumped to Max then seddled back down to 3 bars. So far so good.

ROFLMFAO..... I take it this was recent?
Not unlike the time when i had LoS when i threw my startac at that guy who had LoC.
My signal strength is jumping around like crazy...from -106dBm then back up to -64dBm...and everything in between, in a matter of seconds. This has been happening since FD24.
I have been using Sfhub's stock rooted nodata roms. I tried the FD02 kernel repack with rougue recovery on FD26 rom & modem, and it seemed to jump around alot less.
Could the kernels be the issue? Or the modem? or the Rom itself?
Update for FF02:
FF02 seems to be better for now...will do some tests later. I had it jump around only once yesterday.
Try throwing your phone at the wall, fixed mine

If it is jumping fro -106 to -64 and back, it is probably scanning because it lost signal. When you first boot your phone, often it exhibits the same scanning behavior.

That's what I figured...and that fact is absolutely murdering my battery life.
You think a data reset will help?
I wouldn't say there is a great chance, but the possibility exists.
The "cleanest" install possible is the following:
1) install Full ODIN OneClick
2) remove external sdcard, if any
3) from android, format internal sdcard
4) from android, perform ##786# reset (providing your MSL, which can be retrieved via "getprop ril.MSL" from terminal or adb shell)
If you format your sdcard, make sure you move your backups to your PC or other external storage.
What does the ##786# reset do exactly?
Rinzler said:

It resets NVRAM as well as your Android user data.
You dial ##786# in the dialer on a stock rom.
It will reset stuff like your phone #, your data login, and other values stored in nvram.
It will cause your phone to perform hands free activation at the next boot, which will populate that information again as well as update profile and prl.
Hands free activation only works on Sprint's native network so don't do it in a place where you can't reliably get signal.

happened to me right after i flashed fe07 modem. i moved back to fd26 to see if its the towers or modem. all seems fine, but i will be keeping an eye over the next day.
FE07 had absolutely abysmal 3G data speeds. It took so long to download the Facebook app update that I immediately flashed an older modem to check against it - FC24 runs like a CHAMP.
I tested fe07 for a day or so. I didn't notice much other than it would drop to 1x often. I ran a speed test 3/4g between fd26 and fe07. Fd26 clearly performed better for me. I went back.
Still rockin EL29 here. All the new modems sofar for me have sukt dik. And YES I let them settle in B4 pulling any test. SOOOO I dont want to hear the BS here, like whatwent on with my other post in a similar topic. Yeah got me sum points taken away..lol..

Updating profile is what's important. there's no settling in. Im using ek02. It's the most stable (IMO)

Try ta tell that to some of the fools in here. Then bam a mod from a completely diff forum or wherever he is from hands me a infraction. Oh well. It is fun to flame. Fuk um.
Lol
I don't discuss modems because for every release 1/3 think it is better, 1/3 think it is worse, and 1/3 think it is the same.
No matter what you say, some people are in violent disagreement.
Just pick what works for you.
Fe07 is the best ever in history until the next best release!

I got the "you roamed too much call" yesterday. I don't force roam ever because I'm in FL and force roam doesn't work here with sammy phones.
I was running several of the recent modems last month and used 5GB of data roaming. Almost 100% of my data. Was the first and only month this has ever happened....in 8-9 years. I reverted back to older modem and roaming stopped. This was on top of the fact that I keep wifi on at all tines at home because my house is a dead spot. I also have an air rave (whatever its called).
I only listen to music, email and surf web. Quite surprised by the call.
I explained to rep that I only go to work and home. That for whatever reason home and work are dead zones. Of course he checks and tells me coverage is great in my city. Then he says sprint can boot me, or I can ask to switch for free. Told him I didn't want either. His solution was for me to put setting for roaming sprint only. I asked him how I would use my phone if I only roamed sprint? No answer.
Very frustrating since I wasn't force roaming, have 6 lines and can't afford other carrier and I actually like sprint.
Sent from home How do I turn my phone on?
My phone came with El29, and after seeing loss of signal often I started experimenting with modems. Tried fd19, fd24, fd26, and fe07, and I still get bouts of loss signal. It's not an issue of bad reception, because my OG epic has no signal problems.
Hows the signal on FE10?
So after flashing a couple of ICS roms i really like calkulin's ICS and will stick with it. But as soon as i went from GB to ICS roms, my signal strength and service in certain areas has gone to *&^%.. Im getting LOS more too.
I determined that it was time to update modems(i was still running el29)
I tried fh23 and FI03 and FI03 seems to be the better out of the two, but my buddy is still on el29 and seems to get better service regularly(i put him on the same version of calkulin's rom as well)
My questions are as follows:
1. What exactly does a modem do?
2. why does sprint release so many, and is there that much of a difference?
3. how do i find out which is the best modem for me?
4. (sounds like a stupid question but here goes) What is the difference between a modem and a radio?
Thanks!!

A modem is the same as the radio. They help bridge the software and the hardware for your radio components. There were so many modems because there was a bunch of leaks we have gotten. You find out which ones best by flashing them. Each phone as well as each area can be different. So you just have to find out.

Thanks for the crazy-fast reply!
I have cracked open quite a few e4gt phones and they all look the same and parts always swap(data ports,camera,glass)..I don't get it..
Is it possible that, collectively, we have made a couple of assumptions only because of the amount of variables(and outcomes) between users that are involved?
I just refuse to believe that these modems are location specific.
I do, however, think they could be hardware-specific being that the e4gt is made in a couple different locations...But, does anybody come across a modem that just DOESN'T WORK on their e4gt?
I believe some of the modems are actually the same. They are just called different because it was a later build date. But it was the same modem. And yes I have had a few just not work. The fd series gave me horrible reception. I'm talking not being able to make one call. Then in the same place moments after I would flash the el29 or fc15 and it would be full bars again.

Is there any thread in which people discuss this topic a little further? I'm interested in getting to the bottom of all this..I'm about to go to sprint right now to see what modem their new phones are running! Also, i have a GF in los angeles..I'll have her do the same..She got her e4gt about a month ago and hers was running fh13 out of the box.

install FI03. It fixes a lot of battery and 4g speed issues. best modem since EL29.
Oh..i just read your signature..Is fb21 still the modem you are using? Why did you choose this one? Why not FI03? Isn't that the newest? Have all of these people really flashed all of these modems or is that overkill? Is my analysis of all of this overkill? LOL
I use FF18 and that works quite well in my area. I haven't tried the newest leak yet but I might soon.

No I am not on fb21. I stopped maintaining my signature when I picked up tapatalk. I am on fi03 right now

I am on FI03 and its the best for signal strength and data speed I have ever had.
If you do not get the same service as your buddy it might not be the modem firmware that is the problem. I was having lots of signal issues and my friend was not. I finally took the phone to sprint and had them run a signal check on it and it failed. I got a replacement phone since mine was still under warranty. The refurbished phone running under FI03 is getting great signal where the other was barely getting anything. So it might not be a firmare issue but a hardware one.
Sprint will charge you $35 for the test.
