Be careful of the app Widgetsoid - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

This app just used over 5 gigs of data for what ever reason without my knowledge. If you use it, just move over to CM, it's far better.

It used the data on WiFi. Probably counts any data you used over WiFi after toggling the WiFi on with widgetsoid. Check your mobile stats for a more accurate reflection.

I don't have any service at the moment, so it can't use any mobile data. If that's the case, then it still woulnd't make sense because I haven't used it since I was on stock (I've been on CM 10.1 for 3 weeks now).

But its been installed the entire time? Why leave it installed/running if you're not using it? Not that I'm excusing it, I just find it hard to believe that such a popular app for unrooted users could have such a glaring bug.

Widgetsoid is solid.
I've worked on the beta program with the dev, and I've given him a heads up. I doubt the problem is Widgetsoid, but if it is, I'm pretty sure the dev will fix it ASAP.

Hi,
I'm the dev of Widgetsoid. I use internet connexion only for showing FAQ under main menu and make backup/restore with DropBox.
I don't understand what's append with your devices... Can you tell me your device name and your android version please ?
Like this if anyone have same device it can test if they have same problem. No one report me this kind of bug for now.

It was part of my TitaniumBackup. I just batch restored a lot of apps I think I would need, but since CM 10 has built in notification widgets, I forgot about widgetsoid.

when you dirty flash a rom over stock, data statistics are messed up and applications name are all wrong, happened to me a lot of times..
widgetoid is not to blame for sure.

I'm almost certain it wasn't a dirty wipe.
I did wipe cache, format/reset. Is that still considered a dirty flash?
Also, how do I go about resetting my data usage? What app do I clear cache for?

I don't know where this statistics are stored, I wondered this myself when this thing happened to me..I don't remember if this bug is present also with a full wipe, this would mean that are stored in sdcard partition (I don't think so..) or worse, they are synced to a google server , or also craptanium backup is to blame.
Anyone has some informations?

Ok thanks for this informations i make all my tests with a galaxy nexus with stock ROM (root) and widgetsoid never appear in my data usage and i use it every day...
I will look into my code to if something can be download or upload data but 5Go is huge ! None of widgetsoid option can do this.

As others have stated, maybe google data usage sync is to blame.

I have seen this happen before on my device. For some reason Zagat had over 10GB of usage showing and i never used the app... I have a tendency to download apps mentioned in blogs and never use them Lol....
I think there are some bugs in the data usage widget, its happened on more then one occasion.

the battery life was probably terrible if it used this much :/
That's crazy! Have you mailed the developers? It must be images or something, text couldn't add up to that. Maybe leave it connected to your wifi and run wireshark or something (if you've got an adapter that will run promiscuous mode properly) - maybe you can see what it's doing...

Images? Forget about images, this has to be downloading high quality videos to get to 9GB.
I have some serious security concerns about what this app is doing. You should try to sniff the data and see how much its sending versus receiving. I'd be curious to know what IP addresses it is communicating with. Did you install it directly from the market?

Hi,
I am the dev of this app.
1. when you have such trouble, please contact me by email (hopefully somebody did).
2. check if it load images and images sizes. It doesn't load 'thumbnails' from the websites, but full images if thumbnails are not available ... so, if the website use big images of 2Mb ... it can goes quickly.
3. disable widget cache if it was enable
4. here is my widget with 3h refresh period and 8 feeds :
http://pureapps.planethoster.org/images/presentation/pne_data.png
5. if you use the internal viewer, all browsing you does in the viewer is counted ... video streaming, downloads...
@deekjx : For comments about 'security concerns', dump the UDP/TCP trafic if you want, there is nothing hidden. But, please, be careful before publishing such comments. Now, if the app doesn't come from the market, you can be right... few users reported Pure calendar hacked bersions containing viruses because they got it from a 'forum'.
Please, email me logcats just after a manual refresh to check what is wrong.
Same for me too
Switched to manual update worked fine. contacted dev through market

So im having issues with my android market... Apparently when i select "My Apps", it doesnt recognize that i have any apps loaded. So i downloaded "MARKET FIZ-ROOTED" by Potente. This app added 3 apps that can not be removed! I even tried reflashing new roms with no luck. The added apps are "GWANG-JU SUBWAY"by Hyun min cho, "KAROGES" by Creative factory and "Lovely Sky live wallpaper" by Creative factory. I reported all 4 apps to Googles reporting link. Funny thing is when you try to warn people on the ratings tab, it never shows up in ratings! I need some ideas to get me out of this mess. Im afraid of using my phone for any sensitive information for now.
Try this. Format your internal SD card and external from Astros or something similar. Then in recovery wipe everything and flash "Calkulin's format all zip". Then flash a fresh ROM.
Sent from self nominated "B" team member's phone.
Google has the ability to remotely remove apps from a persons phone if I recall correctly. I hope that they remove them for you upon your report of them being malicious apps.

Common sense is still the best antivirus.
Why would you even install that app? Look at the reviews. There's 8 and half of them are bad. It doesn't even claim to fix the problem that you are describing.
Did you even ask xda for help before installing the app?
Did OP try using titanium backup to force remove offending apps? Needs root iirc. They'll likely be listed as system apps.

Gwan ju has the same system name as com.samsung, thatswhy it shows up in your apps but its not actually installed. Google will have to remove it from the market or you have to uninstall com.samsung to get rid of the app appearing in your downloads.
If you uninstall com.samsung you will not be able to update your profile or PRL, but besides that there are no other side effects.

[APP] Cell Broadcasts - Emergency Alert System

My biggest hold back on installing CM10 or AOKP was the lack of Cell Broadcasts built in. But low an behold I was able to restore it from a Titanium Backup. I figured I'd go ahead and share it here for all. And maybe for myself if I ever lose it!
This for sure installed on AOKP. At least it installed, I'll have to wait until Wednesday when they do the test to confirm it works.
To install (this is old, the link at bottom has a flashable zip.):
1. Copy the "CellBroadcastReceiver.apk" into "/system/app"
2. Change the permissions to "rw- r-- r--"
3. Restart
It wont be a normal app, but it should appear under Settings --> More... --> Cell broadcasts

It may not be for everyone. But for me, in Arkansas, I find it useful for Tornado warnings. The AMBER alerts are good too. Apps use data and GPS, thus killing your battery. This is a more stable system than some app. Most of the time my phone's WiFi is connected to some shoddy open Linksys router and in and out of proper data service anyway.
Cell Broadcast is like receiving a free text. Good for those on limited data plans, or those that need to be safe!

I think this was standard on the STOCK build, I can not remember since I rooted and flashed CM10 nearly the same day I got the phone. The point of this as the OP states is that once you flash CM10 you lose this functionality. He provided a way to recover that functionality.
Why does this get stripped out when they build the ROMs? I can't imagine anyone actually thinking it'd be a good idea to remove this, is it an oversight?
Cell broadcasts are true broadcasts, so there are no network overload issues when sending them out.
And they work as soon as there is coverage. If you are roaming somewhere without data, the broadcasts will still work.
Doesn't Google Now have something like this built in?
"Public Alerts" card? ... I do remember when a hurricane was coming to NYC, I never received any alerts. Although I was told by some people, it was in text messages.
Thanks to the OP for the app, obviously some people wanted it.
I find this funny though because my parents and I spent xmas weekend trying to figure out how to turn this crap off on their iphones, never did find a way, fortunately my n4 (stock at the time) did not have this annoyance.
This should be a flashable zip, with an addon.d script to keep it alive between ROM updates. I suppose I'll make a zip for myself.

Extreme Bloatware Removal 4.1.2 Stock ROM Best Battery

I love the Note... the big screen, powerfull quad-core processor, 4G LTE... Huge 3,100mAh Battery... I like Samsung TW too...
But yes, that is all i use my phone for... CALL/TXT/WEB... VIDEO/GAMES PLAY... DOWNLOAD FILES AND MOVIES...
I dont use S Pen, dont make sketches or notes by hand, dont use Swipe or WiFi calling, I only synch my contacts with Google... nothing else... so i dont need any other features/elements of the stock 4.1.2 TW ROM so i deleted everything that isnt of use for me and that i know it wont crash the OS or give me FCs of the stuff i use...
Makes the ROM small and snappy, and gives me exelent battery life, almost next to none battery drain...
So before you bash me, consider that there are mybe other users just like me that dont need all the extra features running in the background, and want the best possible battery life...
I am posting screenshots of 4 pages Titanium Backup w the elements my ROM runs, 39 in total only, when you first load TB on a stock ROM it will read 250+ elements !!!
Before you freeze/delete anything, please make sure you wont need that service... for example, dont delete GoogleCalendarSynch if you use the calendar to make/synch notes and appointments...
You need some basic knowlege of what is what, and just freeze first and see if all your things you use are working properly...
I just decided to share the minimum elements to run properly the stock ROM and get the best battery with close to none drain when you dont use your phone...
OK, here is how my Titanium Backup looks like after i deleted every single element i do not use:

Hah yes sold the Blaze $170 got a nice Note 2 w 32GB card for $340, call it a good deal time to get me some LTE goodness i thinks haha.
I even factory reset the phone after deleted everything... to clear the caches and stuff...
Works just fine, the only thing i notice, i had to go to the Mobile Networks and change the APN name from the etc one to the fast, as i deleted all the pre config things from the ROM i assume it wasnt set automaticly, so phone didnt conected to the network automaticly...
Not sure if it was for the note 2 or note 1 but it was an aroma flash file that let u delete all the bloatware
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
this is really useful. good to know that all the com. stuff are useless and can be frozen. was there any list you went by to see what each element is for? i remember there was a list available when i was using the s2, but haven't seen one for the note 2.
does anyone know which ones are needed for wifi calling? i need to keep those.
and also my phone keeps thinking it's new and keeps giving me info on how to swipe to unlock phone after every restart, is there anyway to stop that? i removed most of the stuff like the op, but is having this issue. pretty much my only problem aside from wifi calling.
This interests me greatly and i'd like to know if you just freeze the unused apps or completely un install them\
EDIT:
nevermind no one answer that i figured things out sorry
So is it a list that gives whats safe to unistall i would to try this as well

I know which app is causing it. The questions are:
1) What part of Android does this and can it be disabled?
2) Is this an issue the apps developer needs to address if I can't do #1?
This is the only app I have found that causes this. But I have read about others that can do it but there seems to be no definitive answer to fix it. I tried everything, even a factory reset and each time I install this one app it starts again. I really like the app too.

My stock T800 starts that way on rare occasions and have not been able to determine the cause. I've factory reset to no avail. I don't have the app you linked installed so I'm not sure what's causing it. I was hoping I did so at least I'd know. Hopefully someone can chime in and provide some insight.

Yes it seems, from what i've read all over the internet, it's not one particular app. Just would like to be able to disable the app that is actually causing the trouble. Don't know what it is. Just hope it's not the core android OS.

Android is starting is the behavior after delvic cache is wiped I believe. Perhaps there is an issue with the cache partition or an app is having difficulty writing to the partition. Just guessing at this point.

Best answer I have yet . Which makes me think the developer might be doing something wrong. Yeah, maybe his app doesn't bother 99% of the devices out here but all it takes is 1% to give your app a bad rap.
Especially when someone has paid to support it.
This is the answer I got in email from the developer today..
"Sorry but this really isn't something I can control... Android is in charge of optimizing your apps, if it finds something that it needs to optimize, it will run. How long does it take?
There is nothing that I know of that I can do to change this. It is a system level process. This app optimization process has been around since Android 5.0, when Google changed to the ART runtime."
So I guess that's that...I was hoping he would give me a clue as to what android app is actually doing the work....maybe I could disable it.
