Defective Bezels in Note 2 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have any of you noticed paint peeling off the chrome bezel unveiling black color, and/or cracked bezels, and/or scratches when they first received their Note 2's as a result of poor quality control / manufacturing defects?
This inquiry is only applicable to International Note 2 N7100's;
I have noticed that, US Carrier (Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, & AT&T) Units do have signs of these, which is completely absurd.
I want to know if any of the International users have experienced this, yet.
Thanks

Mines has been in a case since day 1. So I haven't noticed anything; I'm too lazy right now to take the case off and check... Maybe on my next case rotation...

no not seen any note 2 here, like u mentiond but may b some device has got tht

No. Neither does the chrome bezel seem to scratch easily! I always carry it in my jeans pocket n have samsung flip cover on it most of the time.

The chrome part of my S-Pen was chipped after dropping it. It has a white color part now. I feel bad looking at it lol. Only flaw on my Note 2 yet.

I got mine.
Not from the beginning yeah but I don't even know when it happened.

Many have spotted small gaps between the bezel and the glass of the display. I have cross-checked with over '12' Note 2 pieces across several stores, and they all have this gap in various areas, (i.e. top of the unit, bottom of the unit, and near the power / volume controls).
Secondly, although I could not find this on my T-Mobile Note 2 (I even used a magnifying glass to confirm), some of you may have noticed that the bezel is NOT 100% molded. If you inspect closely, you will notice a joint at which it appears your bezel is cracked, but is not. You might find this disappointing, but according to Samsung standards, the joint appearance is completely normal. Some joints (meeting of both sides of the bezel) will be very prominent, and some will not (in the case of mine).
Unfortunately, Samsung does not have consistent quality control with their devices, and you will definitely spot manufacturing variations, but don't be alarmed.
You should really consider these variations as consistent according to Samsung's quality control.
---
Visiting the squeaking back cover again, this sometimes also occurs when the end-user forcefully removed the back-cover by chance. Treat your Note 2 with care.
However, some back-covers are indeed cheaply Made by Samsung, and the clippings are not always made consistently; therefore, you will see different results from unit to unit.

I dont have any of those traits on my phone but I was wondering if it has any relation to where the device was manufactured. Mine says Made in Korea by Samsung. If we can ask people to mention if they have this defect or not and specify the country of origin we could get a better picture here.
Sent from the Rabbit Hole

Users that have the Verizon Note 2 (Made in Korea) have similarly experienced the same blemishes on their Note 2's.
Come to the N7100,
I saw another 'four' Note 2's (2 were white and 2 were grey) all Made in Korea (International Version; N7100), and they had similar appearances in respect to the sub-par chrome paint job as well.
One Grey unit had a severely loose power button.
The White units had bigger gaps between the bezel and display than the grey version.
All four devices had loose volume buttons.
The joints on the bezels on those four units were very visible compared to the U.S. Carrier versions which did not have any.
Those four units were Made in Korea; therefore, country of origin doesn't seem to play a role here compared to previous Galaxy models.

Having a defective note 2 out the box and on my second, can someome confirm top middle of phone silver bezek next to ear peice clicks- is this correct or faulty please

Had this problem with my old Note 1, after a year of abuse. Dropped couple of time, finally some chrome paint peel off.
But not with my new Note 2 lte, not yet.

I noticed recently that the part of the bezel closest to the display is starting to chip off and the white plastic underneath is clearly visible. But that wasn't much of a defect it's the area that rubbed against the floor after I dropped it. Other than that I haven't had issues with any of the hardware buttons. I'm not much concerned anymore since I can easily buy another housing online for as cheap as 10buks and easily replace it with minimal effort.

Larger screen for future Nexus, edge-to-edge screen is possible!

Hi,
I was thinking, why manufacturer has not created "edge-to-edge" screen on mobile phone?
Phone screen that is enlarged to the edge, removing the bezel.
Right, the problem with this ... User might touched the screen inadvertently at that edge. And this will cause problem.
But, there is a way to avoid this!
By defining the touch area to be smaller (contracted) than the actual area.
Borrowing the idea of soft virtual buttons of ICS ... We could also create virtual bezel using the screen area!
See the attachment.
First pic is the edge-to-edge screen
Second, the red rectangle is the touch screen area.
In this way, when you hold the phone in your hand ... and touched the edge, it will not trigger touch.
And we can have bigger screen when viewing video!
What do you think?
I think I want this kind of screen.
And I hope the next iPhone 5 will not implement something like this (small form factor with large screen due to edge-to-edge).
PS: If Apple implemented this, can we use this post as "prior art"? hahahaha ...
Anyway, I have some times today to post this
I remember seeing a while back when people were speculating about the iphone 5 that it might have a screen like this. Someone had leaked a picture of what was supposedly part of the iphone 5 display. A render was done of what the iphone 5 might look like

More cracked screens also. I dont like edge to edge. Nexus one was close edge to edge because of rounded bezel and it didnt function well already on top of the poor capacitive screen. Leave the edge to edge to home electronics. I like the bezel.

To me, the phone would look dumb.
Phones will loose all bezels altogether.. sooner then we might think. Samsung already has prototypes of thin flex plastics containing the whole screen.
Here's a taste of what the future could or probably will be like. I speculate within 5 years our phones will be nothing like today... battery tech is that big holdup right now.
Video is made by Corning, which we all know makes Godzilla glass, that ironically we don't have on our GN...

Its not going to happen that fast commercially. The world has bigger issues to conquer than screens you can roll up. Battery issues is one of those issues. And energy issues. Both need to be addressed globally or we will have neither.

Your Note 2 Is Not Defective. [Solutions To Common Quality Issues Found On Note 2]

I'm sure many of us have gone through countless returns, replacements, and refunds, with Samsung's range of Galaxy smartphones, believing that our phones were defective as a result of absurd manufacturing anomalies and quality control problems. Though, we are not Samsung factory workers, it appears Samsung has given us some labor. Obviously spending $700+ on a phone is not little. However, according to Samsung, everything I am about to disclose is normal. To alleviate the hassle of dealing with a company that has a pretty poor track-record when it comes to quality control; I would strongly advise not to return your Note 2 to the service center or store for the following reasons,
I have listed common problems some of us have come across; along with are some Do-It-Yourself Tips and Tricks to resolve these minute problems.
Squeaky back cover?
- Ensure all sides of the back cover have clipped in properly; there should be no gaps, the fitting should be seamless
- If that doesn't resolve the squeaking, replace the back cover with a new one (cheap plastic tends to expand)
- Try not to remove and install the back cover over and over again, as that will eventually weaken the plastic clippings on the back cover
- Do Not Remove the Back Cover Forcefully!
Light leaking on sides of home button?
- The home button has plagued Samsung for the past couple of years. But don't worry, your home button is not defective.
- The button is not uniformly seated properly, that explains. As a matter of fact, your home button should be flushed, not elevated above the display. To check if your button has light leakage, go into a dark room, angle your phone while the capacitive lights are on, and verify light leakage in the home button area.
- Solution: Place a piece of tape over the whole button, ensure that the tape is placed beyond the edges and sides of the home button. The tape will help keep the button seated properly and flushed, equally on both sides. Now as long as you massage and use the home button a few times a day, and remove the tape after a couple of weeks, the light will no longer protrude through the sides of the home button.
Black specks / Bezel Chrome Finish production errors?
- A lot of you may not be noticing this; only if you orient your phone at a particular angle, you may notice the chrome paint color inconsistency on the bezel (the chrome paint job was not done properly), black specks will show to some degree; now if it bothers you so much, put a case on. There is nothing you can do about it; all Note 2's have this quality control problem one way or the other.
- You don't have to worry if the metallic painting is not done properly behind the phone, as the back cover will conceal it.
Loose Volume Rocker control buttons / Power button?
- As long as you feel the button feedback and hear the button press on both volume and power keys, but feel that the buttons are loose, use a case, or massaging the buttons for a little while will help.
AMOLED Display Issues?
- Refer to the following thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2108073
I will update this thread if I can think any more things to look out for when buying a Note 2. If you have any suggestions share them in this thread. Hopefully, someday, this thread can have a sticky.
Hope this helps, enjoy your phone!
This thread applies to International Note 2 and U.S. Carrier Variants.
Titanium Grey color Note 2's noticeably have a minuscule gap between the bezel and glass on top.
Just like the Galaxy S3, the Ceramic White Note 2's are notable for the bleeding light around the LED indicators and touch-capacitive buttons.

My only issue is my included Samsung usb cable comes loose very easily. The same goes for the cable which was included with my Galaxy s3. I have found an LG micro USB cable that fits nice and snug. Comparing the two, the LG cable's metal connector is about 10% longer than the Samsung. Guess i will have to keep my eyes peeled for longet usb cables.

The thing that worries me is when I use sky maps with my gps off. It's way off, like the other side of the world off. The only way I was able to get sky maps working right was to turn the gps setting on in sky maps and to have gps on when using it.
Other then that I was reading about people's compass being off. Mine seems to work good in the compass app. Even with gps off.
I just got my Note 2 today and other then that I love this phone. I cannot belive how great it works (knock on wood).

on my 4th note 2
I am currently on my fourth note 2, yes FOURTH. I went through three of them in the first month. I did exchange, exchange, return. And then I drove to a different corporate tmobile store to buy this fourth one.
all gray color devices manufactured in october.
1st note2: roll axis was off by 6 degrees, making it really annoying to play racing games because I had to hold the phone crooked to drive straight(and no, this sensor cannot be calibrated, i'm a software engineer and I researched it for about 10 hours). everything else was ok
2nd: roll axis was off by 5 degrees, compass off by 45 degrees
3rd: roll axis off by 2 degrees. unusually large gap in top portion of bezel(letting lots of dust in). Dead green pixel in center of screen, dead green pixel in lower right. And it seemed like the entire right side of the device was permanently magnetized, it was very difficult to use the s-pen on that side, and when it did work it was very inaccurate. Also, a couple times I woke up and the screen was on(apparently all night), perhaps due to some part of the phone being crazy magnetized, compass off by about 45 degrees
4th: roll axis is dead-center!!thankujesus!!11. All cool so far except the compass on these devices is obviously garbage, off by 40 degrees.

So this problem is only on Grey Note 2's?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
I've seen over a dozen Note 2's and 'Grey appears is most affected." However, it is difficult to confirm because very few stores have the White Note 2 on display in my area. One store did have '2' White Note 2's for demonstration pieces, and I felt they were manufactured through better quality standards than the Grey Note 2.
However, the White Note 2's do indeed have the gap on top of the unit (very noticeable), and I felt like the White units heat up quite fast compared to Grey. The home button on the White Note 2 is not that recessed (feels quite elevated) compared to the Grey Note 2. The light on the capacitive buttons on the White Note 2 bleed very noticeable compared to the Grey.
Many have spotted small gaps between the bezel and the glass of the display. I have cross-checked with over '12' Note 2 pieces across several stores, and they all have this gap in various areas, (i.e. top of the unit, bottom of the unit, and near the power / volume controls).

You should really consider these variations as consistent according to Samsung's quality control.
I wanted to also mention, that I did come across one dummy unit today (Grey), and was surprised to see the same chrome-finish problems like the actual units. If you angle the bezel a bit, you will see the chrome finish vary a bit in different areas as a result of variations in the paint-finish.
You can scratch the bezel and paint will chip off, quite easily (Similar to Apple's iPhone 5 aluminum coating). However, keep in mind, the material used on the Note 2's bezel is different to some degree.

[Q] Problems with a replaced front glass

Hello,
I recently dropped my phone resulting in a cracked screen. I had replaced the screen myself. The phone still functions just fine with one minor problem. The glass screen isn't 100% touching the digitizer (at least from what I can tell). There is a gap between the digitizer and the replacement glass. I recall that when I was removing the cracked glass, there was a layer of adhesive I had removed because the glass shards were pretty stuck all over it. So does anyone know how to resolve this problem or where to buy that adhesive so there will be a perfect fit?
I've attached some images. One is at rest and you can probably see the dark circle in the middle of the screen.
The second is when I put some pressure on the screen, the *bubble* gets bigger. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Out of luck....
Unfortunately, you are out of luck. Your only option is to purchase the LCD/Digitizer/Glass preassembled. (Around $250)
The design used by Samsung, I believe weakens the glass on the Galaxy S3. Take for example the iPhone 5 which also utilizes Gorilla Glass 2, it is more durable than the S3.
I would think that people would band together and call for a class action law suite against Samsung to replace all screens free of charge for the first incident, or you can sell the phone and buy a quality phone.:highfive:

The Note2 is more durable than the S3, but the glass is still more prone to breaking than the iPhone 5. Again, Samsung is not a quality manufaure, they are a company trying to push out products in quantity, not quality. Quite a shame! Again, to the OP....choose a quality phone which is designed in America
Lol this is funny cause I have droped my note 2 from nipple height all the time....just breaks open and I put the battery in then cover and bam it works

OLED defects

Hey all,
Just curious how many of you received your Note 3's (or older phones) and noticed any OLED display defects? Specifically, if you see any "stuck" red/green/blue pixels? My last two OLED phones (SGS1, and SGS3) were perfect ('cept for SGS1 burn-in), but I just noticed that my Note3 has tiny red pixel splotches all over.
When I first got my Note3 about a month ago, the first thing I did before I even turned it on the first time was slap on a cheap (Spigen) screen protector. I was wearing a red long-sleeve shirt at the time, so when I powered on the phone I was pissed to see what I thought were pieces of red lint from my shirt under the protector. I didn't care that much because I was planning on replacing the plastic protector with tempered glass anyway, annnndddd, I finally got around to doing that tonight, which is when I discovered that the red lint were actually display defects.
On a 100% white background image I can see one somewhat noticeable 0.5mm red splotch in the lower right corner, and then 8 other much smaller red dots spread out elsewhere. On most other backgrounds, it's barely noticeable, unless you know what to look for or have OCD.
I'm not anal enough to do a warranty return over this (though I know many of you out there are); I was just curious how common this minor problem might be? I know that the original Note had a problem with "crushed blacks", which was thankfully fixed, and that the Note 2 wasn't that bright compared to the Note 3, yada yada. Chasing perfection.
(On a good note, though, I did manage to apply my iloom tempered glass screen protector almost perfectly straight, and without any lint this time, thanks to the steamy shower room. LOVE the glass; never going back to tackier-feeling and greasier-looking plastic protectors, even though they're much cheaper)

Same here, my old SGSII had the same defect (even after several exchanges). I think all Samsung OLED displays have the mura defect except possibly for those few lucky lottery winners. I've learned to live with it, but I cringe every night I use it with the lights off. I hope they fix it at some point, I thought they would've by now.

Gap between glass and metal casing

Anybody else has a visible gap between the glass and metal casing at the top edges of the phone? It is big enough to collect dust and is present on the front and the back of the phone. Galaxy S20.

Looks like you haven't cleaned your phone since the day you bought it with all that dust on it. Get a microfiber cloth and Zeiss eye glass cleaner which is safe for all eye glass coatings so it also safe for your phone. Then put it in a good case. I use the 3 piece OtterBox Defender Pro which also comes with a holster. No case is just begging for disaster to happen the first time you lose your grip and drop that thing on the floor. If it's in a case there won't be any dust getting in the cracks because it won't be exposed.
Didn't buy a pretty phone to put it in a fat ass case.

Got the same gap on my S20 Ultra LTE Black version which I purchased yesterday :-
My S10+ also had same gap on exactly same location, Link of the topic : https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/help/gap-left-corner-s10-t3935197
So samsung also have bad quality control now.
This is the reply I received from Samsung :-
Of course he gonna say that's fine XD I worked for samsung customer care and we had briefings where they told us always to push the narrative that's it's fine so we get the least amount of RMA's.
I cannot fit a fingernail between mine, definitely not part of the design
There is a thick gasket inside there which will raise the glass.

So is it still safe from water and dust or ? I have noticed dust going in that gap but they are just stuck there. Been trying with the service center since few days for getting a DOA but there is a very low chance to get it. Even my S10+ which I bought last year had exactly same gap at exactly same location.. maybe something wrong with the manufacturing. Idk how they could manufacture two different phones purchased/manufactured in a gap of 1 year.

That's a generic answer that makes absolutely no sense. If that were the case than all the phones would have a gap.
If you can I would return it and exchange for a new phone.
I have no possiblity to return it to store and get a replacement. None of the offline authorized resellers for any smartphone brand in my country have a replacement policy. I went to the service center but they just sent the snapshots of the gap to their HQ for a RMA and told me that they will call me back within 48 hours with the response of their seniors, however I received no response from the service center yet, its been more than 72 hours. I had already sent an email to Samsung India CEO's Desk and they are following up my case with the service center but I think that it's all just their drama.. they are very reluctant to not issue a RMA for such an expensive phone. I wish I hadnt switched from Apple to Samsung knowingly that there will be 90% chance that all my Samsung phones purchased after 2018 had gaps.
Mine doesnt seem to have that gap or at least it is not as visible, i have black color - if your screen uniformity is acceptable i wouldnt risk replacing phone as you may get one with poor uniformity and that is then a problem
I looked at mine, also grey, it is not like yours.. the gaps is al the same, corners the side, bottom and top.
So I don't think yours is part of the design.
Maybe it wasn't enough to fail at there inspection but I wouldn't be happy with that.
Yeah it seems like that, + the black colour makes the gap look more wider. I have submitted my device to service center yesterday along with the box, bill and accessories. They said that they will be processing the DOA and issue me the certificate today to get a replacement from store. If possible I will try to get a Gray variant this time.
