[Q] Any fix for hard brick? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I rooted the gs2 for a friend and he accidentally flashed a rom for the international gs2(i900 or something)
The phone doesnt show any signs of life now. At all. Doesnt go into download mode or recovery or anything.
I read the only two ways to fix would be either replacing the mother board or using JTAG but both look immensely complicated and difficult
Any way to fix this bad boy?

JTAG flash only. I feel your pain, buddy!
Replacing the motherboard costs a lot more more money. JTAG flash costs around $100 everything included, but you need to mail your phone to someone who does JTAG flashing. You can't do either one by yourself.
---------- Post added at 01:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:13 AM ----------
A Samsung phone doesn't appear to have any ROM (ROM as in Read-Only Memory). It is all EEPROM: a big flash chip. Everything is in there, including stuff you might be surprised to find: like your phone's IMEI. That's right! If you buy a stolen phone, you can change its IMEI and use it: It's illegal, but technically possible! Samsung has been criticized for this, had your phone had a true ROM to contain your bootloader (which you really never need to change), your phone would be totally unbrickable!
So one of the interesting things that EEPROM contains is the your phone's bootloader, the very thing that allows that Download mode that makes rooting possible. It's in a partition of its own in there.
Problem is, in Download mode all you get is a flash chip inside your phone, which you see as a giant block device which you just flash with a prepared image over parts of the chip. So, if you flash an image not meant for your phone, you steam-roller over partitions, rendering them digital confetti: flashing is like low-level formatting your harddrive. If you blow away the bootloader, you loose Download mode. You are done, your phone can no longer bootstrap unaided.
What JTAG flashing means is, your phone gets taken apart, they attach a flash programmer to a service port, and then drive it to copy stuff on it. They load it up with an image from a working phone.

Have you tried forcing your phone in to 'Download Mode' using a USB Jig? Correct me if I'm wrong, but from my past experience I have accidentally run into the same issue (although with the first gen Samsung Galaxy) of flashing a ROM from a different Galaxy variant and ended up with a phone that did not turn on and had no way of accessing recovery/download mode through button combos, thinking it was completely dead.
However, I luckily new someone who had created a USB Jig and was able to use it on the bricked phone to get in to download mode. After being able to access download mode I just had to make sure I connected the phone through Odin and flashed a stock ROM to it.
Before sending your phone out to have a motherboard replaced or have it Jtagged, it's worth a try. Otherwise, kangelov is correct when he said that flashing an image from a different phone will completely remove all the partitions needed to enter the bootloader or download mode.
Best of luck to you!

Alright thank you so much guys. Samsung phones always confused me but now I understand. Ill try and make the jig and get back to you.
Thanks again!

So I used a jig I got from Amazon. Doesn't seem to work. All you have to do is plug it in, correct?
And would a manually made one have different results

and what is the SD card for?

Am I suppose to do something when I plug the jig in? It isn't working right now..

The Jig should automatically turn your phone on and load up the phone to the 'download mode' screen. Which one did you buy? Hopefully it is using the proper resistors as the one mentioned a few posts above.
Edit: I know this is pretty obvious, but make sure your battery is charged (at least more than 50%)

I'm Screwed & Offering A Bounty

So here's the deal: I got my E4GT and rooted it. Everything was fine until I let my son play a game on my phone and the USB cable became unplugged. He decided to "help" me and plug it back in. In doing so, he bent the cable end to 90 degrees and jacked up my USB port. It will charge, but the PC does not recognize it for data. I worked with another user on here to come up with any ideas to restore to stock so I could exchange it. The closest that I came was going back to a stock kernel. Unfortunately, it is now stuck in a boot loop and I can't flash anything else since I am back to stock kernel. I tried to take it to my local store for repair, figuring that I would offer the guy some cash to just get it back to booting correctly. Unfortunately, I must have the one guy at the one store where they don't bend the rules. So right now I have a paperweight. I will pay anyone who can come up with a fix a $50 bounty. I'm really hoping that I don't have to just pitch this thing.
Thanks and feel free to PM any solutions.
Do you have Sprint TEP? If so, you can probably get it exchanged for no cost. If not, it would be $35.

Just because you're on a stock kernel doesn't mean you can't flash in Odin. I don't understand. Can you or can you not get into download mode (Vol. Down + Power)?
Sent from the future.
Have you tried using a different USB cable than the one that got bent?
Here's the ODIN tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337 and this a back to stock you can use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282420 this will be your only way out since you said you don't have CWR any longer cause of the stock kernel that "someone" had you install.
"IF' you are able to get in to download mode, this TAR will get you back to stock so you can start fresh. If the USB connection is jacked up for good, then you're sol.
In that case I would odin some weird **** just to jack it up completely then call in for a warranty replacement free of charge.
You should be able to do a "factory reset" with stock recovery, this may stop the boot loop.

And here is the winner...I have done this with several devices and it always works:
Put it in the microwave.
Set the cook time for 2 second.
Press start.
It will completely fry the inside of your device. It will never turn on again. They will be unable to tell what caused the phone to malfunction. IT WILL NEVER TURN ON AGAIN...LOL!
Voila...return the phone as "defective"

I CAN get into Odin mode, but because my USB port is jacked up the PC doesn not recognize it so Odin does not see it.

This may be a question for a Sprint rep, but would they have noted my records since I went to the store to have it repaired and admitted that it was rooted? If not then OI may take a damage route out if it'll work.

Firstly, we're not supposed to reject phones for root. Our M&P's clearly state we work on rooted phones and does NOT void any warranty with us. So either call him out on that or find a different tech.
Secondly, the microwave idea? If i see so much as any board damage, the phone's getting rejected. Then your definitely put of luck because your device will be flagged as DBR an ineligible for exchange. Not a smart idea, considering responsible techs such as my self make it a point to inspect every phone internally if it's not turning on at all.

So how exactly do I "call him out"? My only option for a repair store is a horrible place. They are the only major store for MILES around and treat EVERY customer like ****. If I just say that he's supposed to work on it and there is nothing saying that the warranty is voided, he most likely is going to tell me to get bent.

is the usb port on the phone bent? Like loose or anything? you could always lookup how to open the phone and solder a replacement usb jack on. I believe its a simple 3 to 4 point solder on the edge of the board.

[Q] Bricked - phone appears as a qhsusb_dload device

was flashing the update through Odin things went horribly awry . Left me with a phone which will not power on, will not go into download mode when holding the vol +/- buttons and connecting USB and appears in Win 7 Device Manager as a qhusb_download device which Windows does not have drivers for.
Any salvaging this? a replacement is on its way to me but I'd rather not be without the phone for the next week while I wait for it.
Thanks
You'll probably need a USB jig to get into download mode now.
Sent from my SGH-T989
Jigs work with the SGSII? Okay, I'll build one tomorrow (no resistors at home and no where to go get a package tonight)
My phone was in this exact same position two days ago (see my thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387752). I tried a USB jig but it didn't work. Unfortunately there's no way to fix it at this point, they have to re-flash it at the factory. I didn't have handset protection with T-Mobile so I bought another one this morning.
I'd also like to confirm that the jig does not work on this model. I had bricked 2 phones in two days and tried two home-made jigs and one purchased from eBay. Ended up taking back to T-Mobile store as they were both under the 14 day grace period.
The jig works...if you don't believe me search away. Obviously it doesn't work if your T989 is beyond repair.

Yes, the jig does work, but it's unnecessary at best. The jig works only if your phone can still be flashed in Odin (meaning, your download mode works). If your download mode works, you don't need the jig in the first place.
Its useless compared to how it works on say, the Captivate S. It will put the Captivate in download mode regardless of how bricked it gets, whereas it won't in ours. Hopefully that makes sense.
Well said ghetto. Makes perfect sense.

I was trying to repartition it with Odin and the latest ROM and used a .pit file that I thought was for the phone. The process started and never progressed. I finally decided to powercycle the phone and hope for the best but ended up with a brick.

So, what you didn't say is that if the phone won't go into Download mode when both the volume buttons are held down and the USB cable is connected then the Jig doesn't cause that to happen.
If that's the case there's really no point in me destroying a miniUSB cable... sigh...
**UPDATE** I closed Oden and killed all processes related to Kies. Then with my phone still in download mode, I quickly unplugged and plugged the cord into the PC's USB port. Odin was able to communicate with the phone and flash the firmware successfully. Hopefully this info will be useful to some other soul and save their butt.
I think I may have bricked my phone also. I was flashing the latest firmware also, it almost completed and then Odin said it failed. Now the device is still in download mode, Odin can't seem to establish a connection, and I'm afraid to pull the USB cable out or power-cycle the phone. Anyone have any ideas? This really sux

That would be correct. If you can't get it into download mode normally (volume up+down plug in usb cord) then a jig will do nothing for you

well i believe the majority of us were experience people who knew how to flash and etc. what probally screwed us over was T-Mobile/AT&T call our phones Samsung Galaxy s2. In europe they also have a phone with the same name. From there we search up Samsung Galaxy S2. and get lead to the I9000 (Europe) rather than the Tmobile (SGH-T989) or AT&T (Skyrocket) all labeled as Samsung Galaxy s2. so we put the wrong kernals and roms in. end result: expensive paperweight.

USB Issues...

Hi All,
My SGS2X no longer connects to any PC for anything other than charging.
I've tried everything, trust me. I've come to the conclusion that it is defective and want to return it for a new one. The problem is that I have rooted it and need to undo this before I return it. Telus told me it would need to be sent to Samsung for testing before they will give me a new one, so I need to unroot before I allow this.
Is there any way to unroot without a USB connection to a PC or am I screwed?
Thanks,
Mael

every time my phone drops to the floor while plugged in, the first thing i always worry about is the usb port
because of those issues reported above
Tried different cables, same problem.
Same cables work with other devices and other phones...
Phone has never been dropped, plugged in or not, so must be a defect.
Seems like a defect to me and thus covered under warranty, only prob is that it's rooted, voiding the warranty. Hence the question on unrooting, but I don't think it's possible.
I may just put up with it for now... It's a hastle not having access to USB storage, but I can work around that. Once I decide what I want for a second phone (Nexus or Note), I'll buy that, then brick the GS2 and go for warranty replacement then...
Pain in tha a$$, but thems tha breaks...
just ... never mind
i was going to suggest Odin, but then i remembered, sheet no USB, no can't do
the stock rom can't be flashed form CWM on the external sd card? I didn't realize that ODIN was required to put back to stock. Just wanted to clarify this.
Have you tried blowing out your usb port on the phone with some compressed air ???
Had a friend of mine , brand new phone, his USB just stopped, it would charge, but nothing else ... Screwed with it for hours, then he blew it out, and it worked ..
Sometimes your phone just wants a good blow job, just like the rest of us ...
(yeah yeah rude crude and socially unacceptable , but hey still funny) ...
Never thought of that... I'll give it a try...

This thread describes a method for flashing a stock kernel and (somewhat) stock ROM by flashing the files with CWM. You won't need your USB port, I just don't know if the stock ROM linked to in that post, will pass for "stock" on your Telus SGS2X. It may be good enough to pass for a warranty exchange/repair, etc., or there may be a stock Telus ROM floating around that is CWM flashable.
Good Luck..
Have u tried the samsung usb cable that came with your phone? ive found samsung phones to transfer data with the stock cable...everything else just charges the phone....just a suggestion

Tried the compressed air, no effect.
The ROM on the phone is stock, all I've done is root and install CWM.
To al appearances the phone is stock, but for the presence of superuser and CWM.
Tried the original cable, no difference...
Telus told me to go where I bought the phone, so I'm going to try going to BB and raising a stink, see if they will replace it...
By bb u mean bestbuy im sure they will they are awesome with returns well atleast the one by my house i like there no questions asked hahaha

[Q] USB connection Issues

For the past few days i have been racking my brain trying to figure out what went wrong.
For some reason I can no longer connect my phone to my computer to transfer/move files. it acts as if the drivers will not take. when i check the device manager it reads SAMSUNG_Android with the yellow !
I have reinstalled lastest drivers from Samsung site, removed all drivers and tried from Kies software/ rebooted pc and phone countless times. tired my laptop where it use to always work and same results. One this i did notice was at some point i got an error on my internal sd card and that i should format it. I backed up all files via ftp formated the internal sd and tried again.. all with the same results. I have also tried 3 different cables.
PCs both windows 7 one 32bit the other 64.
Phone e4gt rooted FI27, everything else stock
All and Any Help greatly Appreciated.
Here it comes!!
I'm hoping that I'm wrong BUT, that is exactly how my EMMC brick started. Let us know if your phone just shuts down and the only thing you will get is a blue light. There us nothing you can do then but take it back to Sprint for a free replacement. I couldn't figure my USB issues out for maybe a week and then it just died when i plugged it in to transfer photos I'd just taken 30 seconds before it died. Lets hope I'm wrong but I'm writing this with my new phone ate the exact same symptoms with my previous Sammy. Try to get your internal memory backed up now! Boot your CWM and mount your external USB. I wished I'd have.
Try a brand new cable and see if that helps. This phone seems to be especially intolerant of if connections.

I tried 3 different cables I have another in the car I will give that one a shot as well. Just odd how all of a sudden i started getting this problem.

ok tried cable that i had in the car and same thing
I still say try a brand new cable. When I first had this issue I tried 3 or 4 old ones before buying a new one.
Today my brothers nexus s wouldn't charge except with one particular cable. I think that the cable and port are still within individual tolerances but together there is just too much play in the connection.

Damn, I was sure that'd work. I guess if you were able to back it up it's time for a replacement.

I think I bricked my EPIC 4G -- Please help!

I know there's been several threads on this in the past and I've tried most if not all of the solutions in them (except for the JIG) to no avail.
My EPIC 4G was on stock GB and I tried to ODIN GB08 as per this thread. The process failed (the message didn't tell me much) and left my phone as it is now. No lights ever and no way to go into download mode or recovery mode.
I have:
- tried to go into download mode by pressing 1+Power without the battery or SD card and then inserting the battery
- tried to go into download mode by pressing 1+Power without the battery or SD card and then plugging the phone via USB (using different cables)
- left the phone charging overnight
- left the phone without the battery for a while and then attempting the steps above
Nothing. Not a peep. Not a little light or sign of life anywhere.
Did I fully brick my phone and have nothing to do other than use it as paperweight or sell for parts? Keep in mind I'm no longer on Sprint, so I don't think I could get it repaired by them.
Any help is appreciated, except for the little reset button under the camera. Let's not go there again. LOL
Don't flash ROMs designed for the Epic Touch 4G SPH-D710 on your SPH-D700 Epic 4G.

OMG!!! I didn't even realize! I googled "EPIC 4G ODIN GB08" (is that even the latest stock ROM?) and that was one of the results. I didn't even check!
Anything you would recommend at this point to get my phone back to life? Remember I'm no longer a Sprint user.
If you are indeed on our device, SPH-D700, and flashed a SPH-D710 ROM, then you're hosed.
Our device's last official release is FC09.
Learn from the mistake.
God, this is so ironic! The phone was perfect yesterday and the only reason I was upgrading from GB was to enjoy it for a little while as a backup WiFi only device and then sell it. It's MINT. It looks like it just came out of the box. Not the slightest scratch anywhere. That's how I kept it for the whole year I used it as my primary phone. And here I thought Samsung devices were unbrickable, since you could overwrite ANYTHING on them with Odin, including bootloader.
Someone on that forum suggested I buy and use a JIG. I wasn't really sure what it was, but found many on eBay and the description sounds like what I need. They claim to get you into download mode even if you're bricked. Is that wrong or non-applicable in my case after this huge screwup? Would this one work?

To my knowledge, a jig should do the trick, but I'm not entirely sure. Only way to really find out is get one and try I guess. Or maybe someone else will pop in and answer.

I just bought this one. Wish me luck!

That would be your last bet basically. If it doesn't work then you definitely have a paperweight on your hands.
here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTQ6Rn0FBSk leave battery in and if u get a fail then close odin take out battery and retry u should be fine

You completely didn't read this thread. This guy flashed an Epic Touch rom on his Epic 4G. He's tried all normal methods of forcing download mode. He's at the last step before considering it a paperweight, which is using a jig.
Read and understand what is being asked and suggested prior to blindly posting.
i think I'm bricked too, any updates on the Jig method?
We're just waiting for razor1973 to update us on it.

Oh, sorry for the delay. I got the jig and it didn't work. No download mode. Nothing. My mint EPIC 4G (it doesn't have the slightest scratch of scuff anywhere) is now a paperweight because of a silly error on my part.
I have a bricked sph-d700 and noticed after fooling with it in the dark that when trying to get into download the device actually comes on. The screen lites up a little. It then won't turn off without pulling the battery. So, after every attempt to get into download pull the battery.
My problem is I can get into download but Odin does not see it. I have tried on a windows XP machine and Vista 32 machine. Windows see the device (Unknown Device) but does not recognize it as "Samsung USB so and so". Is"unknown device" good enough for Odin to see the device? I have tried several driver fixes and the cable I use I have used for data transfer and flashing another Samsung phone.
Where do I go from here?

Next time start a new thread for your problem; don't hijack someone else's. You sound like you have driver issues. Use a different USB port and if still nothing, another computer.
