[Q] Bricked - phone appears as a qhsusb_dload device - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

was flashing the update through Odin things went horribly awry . Left me with a phone which will not power on, will not go into download mode when holding the vol +/- buttons and connecting USB and appears in Win 7 Device Manager as a qhusb_download device which Windows does not have drivers for.
Any salvaging this? a replacement is on its way to me but I'd rather not be without the phone for the next week while I wait for it.
Thanks

You'll probably need a USB jig to get into download mode now.

Jigs work with the SGSII? Okay, I'll build one tomorrow (no resistors at home and no where to go get a package tonight)

My phone was in this exact same position two days ago (see my thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387752). I tried a USB jig but it didn't work. Unfortunately there's no way to fix it at this point, they have to re-flash it at the factory. I didn't have handset protection with T-Mobile so I bought another one this morning.

I'd also like to confirm that the jig does not work on this model. I had bricked 2 phones in two days and tried two home-made jigs and one purchased from eBay. Ended up taking back to T-Mobile store as they were both under the 14 day grace period.

The jig works...if you don't believe me search away. Obviously it doesn't work if your T989 is beyond repair.

Yes, the jig does work, but it's unnecessary at best. The jig works only if your phone can still be flashed in Odin (meaning, your download mode works). If your download mode works, you don't need the jig in the first place.
Its useless compared to how it works on say, the Captivate S. It will put the Captivate in download mode regardless of how bricked it gets, whereas it won't in ours. Hopefully that makes sense.

Well said ghetto. Makes perfect sense.

I was trying to repartition it with Odin and the latest ROM and used a .pit file that I thought was for the phone. The process started and never progressed. I finally decided to powercycle the phone and hope for the best but ended up with a brick.

So, what you didn't say is that if the phone won't go into Download mode when both the volume buttons are held down and the USB cable is connected then the Jig doesn't cause that to happen.
If that's the case there's really no point in me destroying a miniUSB cable... sigh...

**UPDATE** I closed Oden and killed all processes related to Kies. Then with my phone still in download mode, I quickly unplugged and plugged the cord into the PC's USB port. Odin was able to communicate with the phone and flash the firmware successfully. Hopefully this info will be useful to some other soul and save their butt.
I think I may have bricked my phone also. I was flashing the latest firmware also, it almost completed and then Odin said it failed. Now the device is still in download mode, Odin can't seem to establish a connection, and I'm afraid to pull the USB cable out or power-cycle the phone. Anyone have any ideas? This really sux

That would be correct. If you can't get it into download mode normally (volume up+down plug in usb cord) then a jig will do nothing for you

Glad to hear you saved it! As long as the phone is in download mode, you can still unplug the cord, plug it back in, and Odin will flash the Nand.

well i believe the majority of us were experience people who knew how to flash and etc. what probally screwed us over was T-Mobile/AT&T call our phones Samsung Galaxy s2. In europe they also have a phone with the same name. From there we search up Samsung Galaxy S2. and get lead to the I9000 (Europe) rather than the Tmobile (SGH-T989) or AT&T (Skyrocket) all labeled as Samsung Galaxy s2. so we put the wrong kernals and roms in. end result: expensive paperweight.

[Q] This means I'm bricked, don't it?

--Backstory--
I have the Epic 4G touch, not the Galaxy S2 Int. So I'm on CDMA. Anyways, I was installing the Samsung Official Update since I didn't have a ROM on my phone. -_-
It got stuck at "Modem.bin". It was stating "Please wait 2 minutes" but it was like 10 min later. So Like all the other ROMs, I just pulled the plug and did a battery pull. It gave me the option for Odin again, or the recovery mode. I had to flash Clockwork using Odin since I always end up having the Stock Recovery.
--The problem...--
Now... I have the stock recovery. The only buttons that work is Vol up and Vol Down, and the search capacitive just makes the screen blank. My home, menu, and back buttons don't work.
I can go to the Odin mode on my phone, but my phone doesn't connect to a computer. If I plug it while it's off, it'll show the battery symbol then go to stock recovery.
While in Odin, it's just that basic screen that you see. The one about how many flashes you have and stuff. It's just that Odin doesn't recognize my device. My computer doesn't recognize my device. No computer does, but plugging it in turns it on.
I don't think there's anything else I can do from this point.
I'm also thinking about a Jtag service instead of a $100 replacement, since a Jtag service would be $50. Will a Jtag service work even though my computer doesn't read the USB from the phone? And what about a USB Jig? I can get to Download Mode, it just doesn't work.

Remember when I said my phone won't connect to my computer? ADB doesn't see the device. Kies doesn't even see it. Nothing happens when I connect it with a USB with my computer.

Same thing is happening to me. Phone not connecting to pc in download mode. Seems hopeless at the moment
Sent from the future.
did you install the samsung drivers?
I agree
You are probly missing the samsung drivers
Hmm... Check the --backstory-- for those telling me to get the drivers. Or maybe I should get the Int. drivers since I think my phone has the Int. Stock Rom and not the Epic 4G Touch.
I WAS able to connect to my computer. I was downloading and installing the STOCK ROM and it got stuck on "Modem.bin". The very last setting it says before it resets and restarts the phone and then it should say "pass" or "fail". (While in Odin, if you pay attention to the box) That's when I did the battery pull to try something else.
I used to do that for all the other ROMs I tried flashing using Odin, so I expected similar results.
So the drivers aren't an issue. It doesn't work on any other computer I plug it in. There isn't any data traveling, just current. I'll look for my original charger since I was using my HTC charger cable. I'm hoping the only thing is that the Samsung want's the Samsung charger.
If this doesn't work, I'm guessing that Jtag service is what I need. Saves $50. (checked, they charge $50 and Sprint Insurance Replacement is $100).
What is this 3-button thing I'm hearing about? Holding Vol-up, Vol-Down, and Power button I'm hearing about? That just takes me to stock recovery.
I'm thinking I was installing the Int. Version and the reason why the Stock Recovery isn't working is because it's looking for the physical home button instead of capacitive. Which is why I'm stuck like I am. I can navigate, I just can't select in recovery.
Ironic that the Stock ROM bricked my phone like this. -_-
which stock rom did you try to install because we only have a dump as far as i know
No its not ironic if you flashed the GSM international rom you had better pray for your phone .....
We have cdma radio sgs2 is gsm .... You never want to flash a gsm rom with radio instabrick

That's what I'm thinking I did. The recovery mode, I can navigate up and down, but I can't select. I think it's the International version and it's looking for the physical home button. That's probably what's going on.
I just came from the G2, which was very close to the Desire Z, that they could use the same ROMs. So that's why I was just searching Galaxy S2 ROMs instead of Epic 4G Touch. That's what I get. -_-
Going for the JTag
If anybody has anything else to say go for it. I'm going with the Jtag service. My phone will be gone for a few days. Like 3 since I'm in TX. and it's only $50 compared to a replacement of $100.
*sigh* This is a lesson well learned.
My scenario once again.
Recovery Mode: I can only move up and down. I can't select anything.
Download Mode: I can go there, but the phone doesn't connect to the computer. I'm not trying to sound like a prick, but obviously I have the drivers if my phone is bricked. It's not like turned my phone on and bammed it's flashing.
Thanks for any help, but I don't think this could be solved. I think I'm soft brick + hard bricked.
Did you go on irc its easier to help someone like that .....just go on and ask some of the devs may be able to point you in the right direction

HELP! i think i bricked my new galasy s 2

i just bought the tmobile galaxy s 2 and was trying to root it. obviously i did something wrong and now its stuck on a black screen. it will not power on AT ALL and when i plug it into the usb it looks for driver QHSYSB_DLOAD. ive tried everything someone please help. i will pay someone to fix my phone if i have to
You need to get in download mode and odin back to stock. Pull battery and put back in. Go to different computer, win XP works best, download/install drivers on PC then plug phone in to PC and download mode should come up.

Also you may have to hold both volume buttons down. It works both ways with and without volume buttons. Search threads how to get in download mode.

It's bricked. I had the same thing happen a few days ago. Just take it back to the T-mobile you bought it from (assuming you bought in-store) and they'll replace it. Seeing your phone recognized as that "QHSYSB_DLOAD" device seems to be an issue with Qualcomm CPUs and happens mainly to HTC phones for obvious reasons. From the hours of research that I did before returning my phone, no one has ever successfully recovered from that kind of brick.
i bought it used so tmobile wont replace it. BUT i registered the phone on samsungs website and it says its still in warranty with them. do you think samsung could replace it?
Yeah I'd do that. They should be able to help you out as long as you don't say you were trying to root it lol. Yours won't vibrate or anything when you press the power button right?

Yup, mine wouldn't vibrate either. The only sign of life was when it was plugged into the PC in an attempt to get into download mode. I read that when you get to the point where the phone can't even get into download mode properly(showing the usual warning about custom OSes, that the jig device won't work, unfortunately. It may be worth a shot though if the price is right.

[Q] Did I just brick my Galaxy Nexus?

Forgive me if this is the wrong forum for this but today I was just playing a game on phone when it just crashed,
I thought no big deal I'll just reboot so went to reboot, however it just went into a bootloop and would not reboot. Then I thought ok CWR but I could not boot into this. I then decided to use adb mode to flash back to stock. However in this process adb froze and would not respond anymore and kind of had a blue tearing around everything on the screen. I ended up having to pull the battery.
Now however the phone won't respond at all, Won't turn on, won't go into download mode or anything. I can get my computer and laptop to regonize it when I plug it on with no battery but just says searching for driver for OMAP 4440 then fails. I'm pretty sure I have bricked it and am quite sad. Just looking for confirmation.
Its still alive, I'm pretty sure someone with a bit more knowledge will stop by and help you, but it appears to just be a soft brick.

Not connected to PC - no ADB, no ODIN. Plus, his phone failed while playing game (under heavy load) which gives me a reason to think it's a hardware fault. I would say last chance is to try USB Jig.

It's a hard brick, mate...
How to fix?:
take the back cover off your phone!
Remove battery, then plug in via USB (computer)
Leave for 3 hours!!! (With battery still unplugged) This should, in a way, "reset" your phone.
Once the three hours are over, plug in battery, and unplug USB.
Press PWR+VOL Down
Wait untill hpone boots into Odin mode then flashstock firmware from Samsung website.I
If this doesn't work, then I'd send it to Mobile Tech Videos, they kann unbrick it via JTAG...
Let me know if it worked, pleasse

Otherwise I may try get my hands on a jig. Would it be the same one from the Galaxy SII?
It worked? I'll explain you what happened to me:
I was playing for 2 hours on the game cartoon wars. After that, the phone was a little hot, I went to the desktop and locked the phone. 20 minutes later, I try to unlock the phone and I see the Google logo, and nothing responds. I pulled out the battery several times, tried to enter recovery, fastboot, normal boot. Always freezes. Stock 100%, the mobile has one week.... I think I will have to send it to the SAT....
I have my old HTC magic awaiting me, I gave my galaxy S to my sister...
Brick is such a misused word...
hmm

Yup.

[Q] My friend rooted his phone, its bricked.

He said I can have it if I fix it, I have no idea what he has done to it.
It wont boot up at all. Just a constant black screen. I've installed some samsung USB drivers. And when I plug it in under my devices and printers there are 3 things listed when ever I unplug it they all disapear.
under unspecified it lists "SAMSUNG CDMA Technologys" "Samsung Mobile Modem" and "SAMSUNG Mobile Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM) (COM4)"
So the computer does seem to recognize it when im plugging it in. but the phone does seem really dead.
What should the next steps be that I should take, any tips?
1. Take out battery. And put in after 10sec
2. Power on by holding volume DOWN, home and power all at the same time.
3. Once in download menu, press volume up to continue.
4. Flash any firmware using Odin. I believe the gio version is 4.4.2

I have tried this like 50 times taking the battery in and out to, but the phone will not power on at all
Sounds like a hard brick...
...my guess is that something went wrong when flashing - he might have tried to flash something with Rom Manager for example, all Gio owners must avoid doing that since it crashes the phone.
My phone is turned in to the repairman for the above reason wit the exact same symtoms as yours, i'll get a cost proposal (sorry for poor wording, i'm not proposing to you ) any day now. Hopefully it'll be cheaper than buying a new Gio...

It may be that the battery was almost empty and thus the phone shut off...

But then I charged it, maybe it could help, and tried gettin into download mode while on the wall charging, and it worked!!!

I think I bricked my EPIC 4G -- Please help!

I know there's been several threads on this in the past and I've tried most if not all of the solutions in them (except for the JIG) to no avail.
My EPIC 4G was on stock GB and I tried to ODIN GB08 as per this thread. The process failed (the message didn't tell me much) and left my phone as it is now. No lights ever and no way to go into download mode or recovery mode.
I have:
- tried to go into download mode by pressing 1+Power without the battery or SD card and then inserting the battery
- tried to go into download mode by pressing 1+Power without the battery or SD card and then plugging the phone via USB (using different cables)
- left the phone charging overnight
- left the phone without the battery for a while and then attempting the steps above
Nothing. Not a peep. Not a little light or sign of life anywhere.
Did I fully brick my phone and have nothing to do other than use it as paperweight or sell for parts? Keep in mind I'm no longer on Sprint, so I don't think I could get it repaired by them.
Any help is appreciated, except for the little reset button under the camera. Let's not go there again. LOL

OMG!!! I didn't even realize! I googled "EPIC 4G ODIN GB08" (is that even the latest stock ROM?) and that was one of the results. I didn't even check!
Anything you would recommend at this point to get my phone back to life? Remember I'm no longer a Sprint user.
If you are indeed on our device, SPH-D700, and flashed a SPH-D710 ROM, then you're hosed.
Our device's last official release is FC09.
Learn from the mistake.
God, this is so ironic! The phone was perfect yesterday and the only reason I was upgrading from GB was to enjoy it for a little while as a backup WiFi only device and then sell it. It's MINT. It looks like it just came out of the box. Not the slightest scratch anywhere. That's how I kept it for the whole year I used it as my primary phone. And here I thought Samsung devices were unbrickable, since you could overwrite ANYTHING on them with Odin, including bootloader.
Someone on that forum suggested I buy and use a JIG. I wasn't really sure what it was, but found many on eBay and the description sounds like what I need. They claim to get you into download mode even if you're bricked. Is that wrong or non-applicable in my case after this huge screwup? Would this one work?

That would be your last bet basically. If it doesn't work then you definitely have a paperweight on your hands.

You completely didn't read this thread. This guy flashed an Epic Touch rom on his Epic 4G. He's tried all normal methods of forcing download mode. He's at the last step before considering it a paperweight, which is using a jig.
Read and understand what is being asked and suggested prior to blindly posting.
i think I'm bricked too, any updates on the Jig method?
We're just waiting for razor1973 to update us on it.

Oh, sorry for the delay. I got the jig and it didn't work. No download mode. Nothing. My mint EPIC 4G (it doesn't have the slightest scratch of scuff anywhere) is now a paperweight because of a silly error on my part.
I have a bricked sph-d700 and noticed after fooling with it in the dark that when trying to get into download the device actually comes on. The screen lites up a little. It then won't turn off without pulling the battery. So, after every attempt to get into download pull the battery.
My problem is I can get into download but Odin does not see it. I have tried on a windows XP machine and Vista 32 machine. Windows see the device (Unknown Device) but does not recognize it as "Samsung USB so and so". Is"unknown device" good enough for Odin to see the device? I have tried several driver fixes and the cable I use I have used for data transfer and flashing another Samsung phone.
Where do I go from here?

Next time start a new thread for your problem; don't hijack someone else's. You sound like you have driver issues. Use a different USB port and if still nothing, another computer.
