[Q] This means I'm bricked, don't it? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

--Backstory--
I have the Epic 4G touch, not the Galaxy S2 Int. So I'm on CDMA. Anyways, I was installing the Samsung Official Update since I didn't have a ROM on my phone. -_-
It got stuck at "Modem.bin". It was stating "Please wait 2 minutes" but it was like 10 min later. So Like all the other ROMs, I just pulled the plug and did a battery pull. It gave me the option for Odin again, or the recovery mode. I had to flash Clockwork using Odin since I always end up having the Stock Recovery.
--The problem...--
Now... I have the stock recovery. The only buttons that work is Vol up and Vol Down, and the search capacitive just makes the screen blank. My home, menu, and back buttons don't work.
I can go to the Odin mode on my phone, but my phone doesn't connect to a computer. If I plug it while it's off, it'll show the battery symbol then go to stock recovery.
While in Odin, it's just that basic screen that you see. The one about how many flashes you have and stuff. It's just that Odin doesn't recognize my device. My computer doesn't recognize my device. No computer does, but plugging it in turns it on.
I don't think there's anything else I can do from this point.
I'm also thinking about a Jtag service instead of a $100 replacement, since a Jtag service would be $50. Will a Jtag service work even though my computer doesn't read the USB from the phone? And what about a USB Jig? I can get to Download Mode, it just doesn't work.

Remember when I said my phone won't connect to my computer? ADB doesn't see the device. Kies doesn't even see it. Nothing happens when I connect it with a USB with my computer.

Same thing is happening to me. Phone not connecting to pc in download mode. Seems hopeless at the moment
Sent from the future.

did you install the samsung drivers?

I agree
You are probly missing the samsung drivers

Hmm... Check the --backstory-- for those telling me to get the drivers. Or maybe I should get the Int. drivers since I think my phone has the Int. Stock Rom and not the Epic 4G Touch.
I WAS able to connect to my computer. I was downloading and installing the STOCK ROM and it got stuck on "Modem.bin". The very last setting it says before it resets and restarts the phone and then it should say "pass" or "fail". (While in Odin, if you pay attention to the box) That's when I did the battery pull to try something else.
I used to do that for all the other ROMs I tried flashing using Odin, so I expected similar results.
So the drivers aren't an issue. It doesn't work on any other computer I plug it in. There isn't any data traveling, just current. I'll look for my original charger since I was using my HTC charger cable. I'm hoping the only thing is that the Samsung want's the Samsung charger.
If this doesn't work, I'm guessing that Jtag service is what I need. Saves $50. (checked, they charge $50 and Sprint Insurance Replacement is $100).
What is this 3-button thing I'm hearing about? Holding Vol-up, Vol-Down, and Power button I'm hearing about? That just takes me to stock recovery.
I'm thinking I was installing the Int. Version and the reason why the Stock Recovery isn't working is because it's looking for the physical home button instead of capacitive. Which is why I'm stuck like I am. I can navigate, I just can't select in recovery.
Ironic that the Stock ROM bricked my phone like this. -_-

which stock rom did you try to install because we only have a dump as far as i know

No its not ironic if you flashed the GSM international rom you had better pray for your phone .....
We have cdma radio sgs2 is gsm .... You never want to flash a gsm rom with radio instabrick

If you can still get into download mode ... One of the devs on irc may still be able to fix it for you ..... Freenode.net #samsung-epic-touch

Flashing int. Version was a very bad idea. You should research more before doing this possible risky ( as u know ) procedures.

That's what I'm thinking I did. The recovery mode, I can navigate up and down, but I can't select. I think it's the International version and it's looking for the physical home button. That's probably what's going on.
I just came from the G2, which was very close to the Desire Z, that they could use the same ROMs. So that's why I was just searching Galaxy S2 ROMs instead of Epic 4G Touch. That's what I get. -_-

Going for the JTag
If anybody has anything else to say go for it. I'm going with the Jtag service. My phone will be gone for a few days. Like 3 since I'm in TX. and it's only $50 compared to a replacement of $100.
*sigh* This is a lesson well learned.
My scenario once again.
Recovery Mode: I can only move up and down. I can't select anything.
Download Mode: I can go there, but the phone doesn't connect to the computer. I'm not trying to sound like a prick, but obviously I have the drivers if my phone is bricked. It's not like turned my phone on and bammed it's flashing.
Thanks for any help, but I don't think this could be solved. I think I'm soft brick + hard bricked.

Did you go on irc its easier to help someone like that .....just go on and ask some of the devs may be able to point you in the right direction

[Q] HELP! Bricked!

I just bricked my rooted T989. Nothing happens when I hit power (no display) and my PC does not show the drives when I connect via USB. I have tried vol buttons + power (with battery and [no battery + cable]). Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should try next? Is TMO likely to replace/repair my phone even though it had been rooted?
Have you tried getting into download mode? And what caused the brick?

This is really embarassing but I somehow stumbled up WickedRom, which is for the I9100, somehow thought it was for T989, and tried to flash it. Obviously a major league screw up. I have requested a replacement from TMO. I just hope they don't hit me with a major financial penalty if Samsung notices that it has been rooted (it was rooted when I tried flashing WickedRom).

Same thing happened here... I was odining back to stock and the power in my office at work went out... total fail. All Black, no power button, battery pull or Jig will make the phone do anything... anyone find a work around for this... I did this to my VIB before and was able to get it to work again but this just feels bad. Any help is appreciated. Los Angeles area dev's feel free to come play with it.
hey i know im new here but i got the answer... u need 2 odin back 2 stock 4 download mode pull battery plug usb into computer then 2 phone hold vol up and trackpad then insert battery and u will be in download mode also if using CWM dont fix permissions and also dont forget 2 place unzipped recovery file in /system/bin folder and overwrite it over existing file also make sure that cache, data, sdcard ,and system are all unmounted in mounts option of recovery took me 3 days of flashin back 2 stock with odin and soft bricking my phone 2 figure this out hope it helps

Your fault !
Damn that sounds bad, big mistake on your part though, differentiating between i9100 and T-989 is key, among the other models too.
Mine did the same thing after doing a backup. I'm in the 30 day grace period and I'm gonna try to take it back in.. Hopefully I get away with it unless I find a way to fix it

Only way is to send it to Samsung or get it JTAG. JTAG will probably be cheaper.

I think this phone is a goner..

I have researched with no help what so ever. A buddy of mine got a Epic Touch 4G and accidentally flashed gti9100 rom on there.
I told him I will try to help him out.
The battery that is in the phone is gone. It flashes blue when it's plugged to a power source and you cannot start the phone to "download Mode" with the battery.
As soon as you insert that battery and plug in power source, the phone attempts to turn on and at the bottom you get " 3 icons "Phone, triangle, computer" and underneath the icons it says "Firmware Encountered" and the rest I cannot read.
I have a Epic Touch 4g myself and no stranger to flashing and roms.(currently running codname). I can use m y battery in the other phone and it will allow me to turn it on and get to download mode. Problem is, I cannot get USB connection.
Tried different cable, computer, front ports, back ports, downloaded the gti9100 drivers instead on a different computer and still no connection. Really I do not think there is a fix, but giving one my try in the forums.
thanks

One other possible thing that worked on old epics. Try taking the battery and external sd out for a day to let the internal ram clear. Then try going into dl mode with the phone plugged in but the battery removed.

This is not always true. When I first got my E4GT I flashed an international ROM too and it actually let me boot into it but it was really messed up everything was stuck in landscape mode and none of the capacitive keys would work. I could not connect to the PC while booted into the ROM but in download mode I was actually able to. I would give the idea of taking the battery and SD card out for a day a try. What can ya lose?

Ouch.. bad cable? Possibly... there are a few tricks I know of for my epic like battery cpr... holding whatever buttons it is to go into the bootloader (or whatever it is for the gnex) and popping in and out the battery. Leave the battery out for a long period of time like an hour and try to get into "download" mode odin mode etc... if you do get it back into that mode don't use the same cable... get a good thick cable. Or try another usb port.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Thanks. I'll let it sit for an hour or so and see if that does anything.
using a decent cable, but will try another one and another port.
No matter was buttons are pressed i get the same screen.
I would bring it into Sprint and tell them the phone shut off in the middle of the OTA software update that was pushed to it. (I've seen that happen before with exactly this result)
They'll replace it for you. Hope you have TEP or ESRP, or else it's a $35 mistake!
It was a $35 mistake. Sprints return paperwork also states if the phone is ruined they can charge another $125. Lets hope not.
Thanks for the input.
Denver
The only reason they would charge you the $125 is if the phone had physical or liquid damage. They can't tell it was rooted if it's that bricked.
Coming from a former Sprint Tech.
Sweet. If they do charge, I'll send you the bill. : )
Thanks again.

Haha, sure. I've still got connections.
Best of luck with your new one!

USB not recognized?

So all of a sudden the phone will not mount as USB on my computer. Drivers and everything is fine on the computer. Even got a new cable. Still same problem.
Took the battery out and then put the USB in and the phone just keeps rebooting. Doesnt show the triangle or anything. Phone works fine with the current rom. Dont know what else to do.
Maybe USB plug - not cord- , is faulty. If u have anything else u can connect thru same plug in. If phone still works its the only thing I can think off

hooked up my old HTC inspire and worked just fine. I think its the phone.
Its not supposed to keep vibrating and restarting while the usb is connected and no battery is inserted. I'm puzzled here. Tried flashing a diff rom as well. Complete wipe and what not.
OK best thing I can say its send for replacement phone. Mine was water damaged as I bought my sgs2 for $100 in craigslist. Called tmo and they charged me $20 for the replacement. Other than what I suggested I don't know what else u can do

Funny thing is i have no clue once so ever how this all happened. Randomly started happening.
Maybe a bad download. Its a well known issue once in a while.. its the chances we take for experimenting bro. Can't be mad, its the flash itch, yanno. Its like a drug

ok so after getting my jig through the mail i tried to make it work and not sure if i am doing it right but my custom bonary says "no". usb device not recognized! This is getting real frustrating now!
Sounds like your uSB port on your phone has gone bad, which is a known issue. Had to replace my wifes phone in order to upgrade to ICS.
I called up TMO and the rushed out a replacement unit. They charged me $20, but I called and complained so they removed it.
I doubt its the usb port. It goes into download mode and charges but the computer wont recognize it. I've already claimed insurance also cause i needed a phone to use. Id like my original s2 that i rooted back to normal! I dont think they will honor it either being that the phones been rooted and the custom binary says "no".
i just changed the digitizer as well for $170 my self being that the old one cracked thinking i can revive this phone now im stuck with this $500+ paper weight. It works and i can switch between roms only if i load the rom on the sd card through my other phone then put it in the bricked one (this one)
Is there a way i can flash the firmware through SD?
Can you go into recovery? If so which one are you using, CMW or TeamWin? If that's the case you should be able to
"feeding this unicorn carrots til the finish line"
i can go in both. CWM and factory mode, the one with the android on the screen and says downloading at the bottom.
So issue being its that its not recognized unto your PC? That being so you can download zips thru your phone and install that way. All I can think off is that your USB is fried somehow. Still capable of function.
Sent from my SGH-T989
yes the computer wont recognize and no i cant download zips through it. I have to download on another phone then transfer the sd card to this phone (unrecognizable one)
Anyone else have any more ideas please
You do know that you can download zips from within your phone?

I think I bricked my EPIC 4G -- Please help!

I know there's been several threads on this in the past and I've tried most if not all of the solutions in them (except for the JIG) to no avail.
My EPIC 4G was on stock GB and I tried to ODIN GB08 as per this thread. The process failed (the message didn't tell me much) and left my phone as it is now. No lights ever and no way to go into download mode or recovery mode.
I have:
- tried to go into download mode by pressing 1+Power without the battery or SD card and then inserting the battery
- tried to go into download mode by pressing 1+Power without the battery or SD card and then plugging the phone via USB (using different cables)
- left the phone charging overnight
- left the phone without the battery for a while and then attempting the steps above
Nothing. Not a peep. Not a little light or sign of life anywhere.
Did I fully brick my phone and have nothing to do other than use it as paperweight or sell for parts? Keep in mind I'm no longer on Sprint, so I don't think I could get it repaired by them.
Any help is appreciated, except for the little reset button under the camera. Let's not go there again. LOL

OMG!!! I didn't even realize! I googled "EPIC 4G ODIN GB08" (is that even the latest stock ROM?) and that was one of the results. I didn't even check!
Anything you would recommend at this point to get my phone back to life? Remember I'm no longer a Sprint user.
If you are indeed on our device, SPH-D700, and flashed a SPH-D710 ROM, then you're hosed.
Our device's last official release is FC09.
Learn from the mistake.
God, this is so ironic! The phone was perfect yesterday and the only reason I was upgrading from GB was to enjoy it for a little while as a backup WiFi only device and then sell it. It's MINT. It looks like it just came out of the box. Not the slightest scratch anywhere. That's how I kept it for the whole year I used it as my primary phone. And here I thought Samsung devices were unbrickable, since you could overwrite ANYTHING on them with Odin, including bootloader.
Someone on that forum suggested I buy and use a JIG. I wasn't really sure what it was, but found many on eBay and the description sounds like what I need. They claim to get you into download mode even if you're bricked. Is that wrong or non-applicable in my case after this huge screwup? Would this one work?

You completely didn't read this thread. This guy flashed an Epic Touch rom on his Epic 4G. He's tried all normal methods of forcing download mode. He's at the last step before considering it a paperweight, which is using a jig.
Read and understand what is being asked and suggested prior to blindly posting.
i think I'm bricked too, any updates on the Jig method?
We're just waiting for razor1973 to update us on it.

Oh, sorry for the delay. I got the jig and it didn't work. No download mode. Nothing. My mint EPIC 4G (it doesn't have the slightest scratch of scuff anywhere) is now a paperweight because of a silly error on my part.
I have a bricked sph-d700 and noticed after fooling with it in the dark that when trying to get into download the device actually comes on. The screen lites up a little. It then won't turn off without pulling the battery. So, after every attempt to get into download pull the battery.
My problem is I can get into download but Odin does not see it. I have tried on a windows XP machine and Vista 32 machine. Windows see the device (Unknown Device) but does not recognize it as "Samsung USB so and so". Is"unknown device" good enough for Odin to see the device? I have tried several driver fixes and the cable I use I have used for data transfer and flashing another Samsung phone.
Where do I go from here?

Next time start a new thread for your problem; don't hijack someone else's. You sound like you have driver issues. Use a different USB port and if still nothing, another computer.
