I'll recommend CyanogenMod 9 RC2 by arco68. Then flash the seeder. Should be working fine

Depend on which version you're going.
ICS : Arco's CM9RC2
JB: Slimbean
Despite version, flash seeders. Find the best kernel that suits you.

I value stability more than mere looks.
Please don't be a fanatic to one ROM. At this moment, CM10 still have many bugs/annoyances. They will be fixed, yes, but CM9 is much more bug-free.
Not everyone prioritizes 'looks' over stability/annoyance-free usage.
When stability issues have been fixed *and* kernel 3.0 has been working with CM10, *then* and only then can you say "'Nuff said".

Agree with you, even though i'm one of those people who prioritizes "looks" over lower stability, actually to me i don't suffer-much from cm10 bugs as i don't use those stuff. for me the phone is a device to use when you can't use the computer and a mini less-functioned camera in times of need
So to the guy who asked you get to choose from the stable and almost bug-free CM9 or the less stable and has some bugs but better "look" CM10/Slimbean.
And the difference between slim and CM10 is that slim's kernel save more batter(that's what people said after using it) and slim is DARK. i like to have a more "colorful" phone lol so i chosen CM10.

It is better, but people want to use it when it is more stable and has a working kernel 3V with a camera
That's why people still use ICS/GB

I doubt it's more stable, based on the various issues posted in CM10's discussion thread *and* CM10 development thread.
It *will* be better than CM9, I'm sure of that. But at the moment, it's not. There are benefits, *and* drawbacks.
It's kind of misleading to say otherwise. We want W users to be happy with their phone.
Happy does not equal always using the latest and greatest.
For example: Some W users I know in this forum sticks with GB because they need 3G videocall, something that neither CM9 nor CM10 provide. Without 3G videocall, they won't be happy.
Others want the utmost performance, and can live with instabilities and some niggling annoyances. For them CM10 is the most suitable.
Yet others want the widest compatibility with various apps and stability above all else. For these people, CM9 is the right choice.
Different needs, different priorities.

I've been using CM9 Kang by winner for a while now. I love it. Was thinking of switching over to AOKP M4 just to see if its better.
I'm using Franco's Kernel and I heard M4 is better than Stock AOKP.

AOKP FTW..!!!
I use AOKP since i get my Gnex and i can see their development speed which are amazingly fast.. If your interest are more on tweaks and extra features, i think better go for AOKP for now while waiting CM9 to release their milestone. I never flash CM9, i cant give much comment on their ROM. For kernel wise, i prefer Glados over Franco because Glados are more stable and problem free most of the time. Franco always implement features from Glados, sound like Glados is the master

I will chime in here because I was in the same boat. However, I was using AOKP M4 w/ franco's kernel first. I read several posts/threads that stated how CM9 was smoother and faster than AOKP because of less features built-in.
I just flashed CM9 today w/ franco's kernel and I can definitely tell a difference - CM9 is the winner here. It only makes sense from the big picture. The CM guys know their poop - they've been developing ROMs far longer than any of these other guys.
My first rom that i flashed was winners CM9 Kang. Was very smooth. My only gripe was there were no mods for it. I switched over to AOKP and never looked back. Equally just as fast with tons of mods.

You can always use Boot Manager as well to compare different roms. Works nicely for me, sometimes has issues with certain roms.
nbeebe24 said:
To answer your question, aokp is rich with features for customization of almost every aspect of the from. As of now cyanogenmod is playing catch up. But I know it'll be amazing in a short time. Most people use aokp because it requires less work to add/subtract what you do or don't want.
CM has a great reputation, but right now its nearly stock. I am waiting to see what they come out with then I'll probably run it (as I have on my previous nexus'). It all comes down to what you're looking for. If you want features galore, aokp is the right choice. Just run it until CM9 gets rolling
Some of you really need to get off your high horse. Sarcastic and rude comments are totally unnecessary. What if your teachers in kindergarten and beyond told you to stop asking stupid questions? This is a place for learning, sharing, and growing not for ridiculing.

CM9 has been incredibly stable since the "experimental" builds. CM tends to have a different definition of "stable".

But for the newbie who first time to hack my GN, I don't like the the word like 'Nightly' or 'Experiemental' in the version name. If there has some version of CM9 that's truly stable or stable enough, I think it should publish it as 'Milestone' or 'Stable'. This kinds of word are the only keyword for the people unfamiliar with CM9 to make decision to use or not, doesn't it? If so, I think I will believe the team and give a try if there's a stable version. Everybody know CM series have good reputation.

the cm9 nightlies (experimental) are very very stable and good for daily use but,
like said in here before, they lack quite some of the extra features
if you're looking for rom's with more options try AOKP, Gummynex, Codename Android or any other rom you can find on xda ... they are all good roms which give you plenty of options.
it's all just a matter of personal taste in the end i guess
good luck and enjoy!

I hear what you're saying; and I agree the nomenclature can strike fear into newbies.
Luckily with the GN there are a lot of good ROMs available; more quality options to choose from compared to other devices.
I'll find Apex rom very fast and very stable, with leankernel. He's only problem is that it's not update for a while, that could indicate an abandon from the dev. Instead, roman, from AOKP, is very dedicated and his rom growing fast and constantly
Edit: Meh, I'll just try them all!
I am interested in going to ICS, but i want to know a real opinion on performance and stability. I really get irritated by bugs and performance slowness. So Are any of these ICS ROMs ready as a daily driver yet?
In my experience yes... reloaded is very good I have only had one issue with it.... and that is wifi dropped once.. but yes with the 3.0+ kernel they are awesome.

I agree; they are ready in my opinion. I have been using ICS since the earliest releases for the Kindle. It's only been since Hashcode's 3.0 kernel release has ICS been "stable and functional" for many. There will be some bugs for a while and some functionality still unimplemented for some time to come I imagine. Having said that, I find the latest ICS Kindle ROMs very functional for daily use.

Are any ICS or GB ROM wife ready??
I'm sure most know what I mean. I know there is some tech savvy girls here, but most of us tech guys have wives who are very untechnical, so if we give them something with a custom rom on it, it better be beyond stable. Us here can work through some bugs, but non-techies cant. I'd prefer ICS, but if there is some GB rom more stable than any of the ICS ROMs, i'll go with them.

+1 gedeROM
I am using this one as my daily driver. Slight kernel issues but nothing unbearable.
Wifi will drop (I have not experienced this).
Sound will drop (once in the past 10 days I had this happen) and reboot will fix (some say turning the screen off and on again but this did not work in the case that I experienced).
The charging issue... The light will come on and then turn off. I just let it sit on the charger as I sleep and when I return it is at 100%. That is enough confirmation that it charges for me.

I'm not agree with you.
First, there is not a finished and stable CM rom and is not so good start with new projects at this point.
Why?
Because gingerbred on galaxy w is simply perfect and there is no reason or features in CM9 or in CM10 that justify porting and waste of resources and time.

There is no finished CM ROM but stable I honestly think the latest CM9 build is stable for daily use and not so good, lol CM9 runs graphic heavy games a whole lot better than GB even when its OC.
Oh yes GB is much much smoother and better than ICS and JB, sigh. There are already good GB ROMs for the SGW so is it such a big deal that someone wants to drop making CM7 and start doing the newest CM10 for our phone its their choice and if I had skills I rather take my shot and making CM9 and CM10 for our phone better rather than stick with ye old CM7.

Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda premium
Actually, I'm supporting the development of CM9 and CM10 because 'in case of' the ROM becomes standard, I don't have to learn it.
Take an example of the ye old Win XP
Nowadays, Windows 7 has become the new standard of the computing world (of Windows, obviously).
Yes, you can still make Windows XP compatible program (with more cost and testing) , but can you assure that your program (which is made in .. say Win 7 with .NET Framework 3.5 / 4) could run w/o prob in Windows XP while your program works seamlessly in Win 7?
My point here is that we have to take measure on which ROM has brighter future? Will GB be updated again, with more fantastic feature, or will ICS and JB got them?
The problem is that there will be a hell lot of bugs, maybe even a brick... So when I try a new ROM, best I wait till it has only a few bugs that can be replaced with 3rd party apps (eg. Fm radio)

Its the right decision, in my opinion - working on a Gingerbread-ROM does not make any sense at the moment - From features to smoothness, ICS is by far the better choice. Although RAM is a bottleneck for some purposes on the Galaxy W, the device as a whole has enough power to profit from the enhancements that came with ICS and JB.
@bangprovn, would you please release your CM7 source code/repo over github or other repos hosting share with maybe some note howto compile it, I have try it but no luck, stuck on brunch ancora command.
It says there is no ancora device code or sumtim like that

This will be a powerhouse and fast development in CM10 for our phone. A period of 3-4 months, we have a stable CM ROM.
Hello everybody.
I've rooted and modded the Samsung Galaxy W of my girlfriend but now i'm facing a lot of strange battery issues: the battery drains really fast and she hates it.
I've tried CM9 RC6 and SlimBean but the problem is still here. I've got no time to waste on trying 20 ROMs so i'm asking you a suggestion.
She was really excited about the stock ROM. It was fair enough for her, apart from the bloatware that couldn't be uninstalled and some random reboots and freeze.
So, i'm searching for something like that:
Great battery life
Stable and reliable ROM
Possibly CM based or AOSP
In my opinion, a CyanogenMod 7 would be great, but i can't find it for the SGW.
Could you please help me?
Thank you!

My honest advice:
Do not consider anything except Stock ROM with Value Pack or CM9.
Its not that those other coders are not talented. But - it's like with those small, heavily tuned / modified Honda Civics driving around: Their owner / creators and other enthusiasts love them for their custom mods, but you really could/would not give such a car to your girldfirend, mother, or whatever.
sooner or later you run into problems that will never be fixed, nothing for daily usage by a non-IT-person.
With beta 6, i guess you mean RC6?
Battery lasting, the missing fm radio and a sometimes not-100%-stable camera would be the only drawbacks i see for it.
Performance and overall fluidity is at least one class over the stock rom, really remarkable.
Maybe there will be better battery performancee with CM9 in the future, as it is not really clear atm, what causes the impacts.
But i think its unlikely that it will ever reach the Stock ROM under this aspect, as the new features are simply likely to consumer more cpu cycles then before.

CM9 RC6 was actually my first choice, because a friend of mine is using it without any problem. Anyway, i've experienced the huge battery drain even with CM9 RC6.
I can give a try to CM9 RC7 but i'm wondering: wouldn't it be better to choose a ROM with the 2.x kernel?

Yes, i meant RC6, sorry.
Sadly, battery performance is crucial for my girlfriend. Anyway, i just want a "normal" battery drain; what i'm experiencing is a very massive battery drain, totally abnormal.
Would you suggest me a Stock ROM with Value Pack? Maybe it's the better choice...
for me battery drains so fast because of to many apps..just install apps only for daily use..
yeahh i can see some of us back to 2.6..
rc7 impress me..see the ss..with stock battery(old one)..

I think the same but she's just like 20 apps, Pinterest, Instagram, GoogleReader, Dolphin, GMail, and stuff like this.
Regarding your screenshot, 17% left after 10 hours is not so great.
This is her phone now:
Can i install a 2.x kernel on CM9 RC7?
like i told you before..i use my old battery and stock 3.0kernel rc7..my battery usually last no longer than 5-6hrs..
you got 16hrs..that better than mine..
if you want 2.6 kernel i think it is better to install cm9 rc2..

5 - 6 hours? How can you use the phone? You can't even go outside for a dinner that you have to charge your phone.
Do you mean that you actively use the phone for 6 hours or what?

You mean these ones?
Black Notes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483072
RebelROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673875
Bagux Project Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687854
They're pretty old and discontinued but they could be enough for my girlfriend. I'll check them better later.
Thanks!

beside the aosp & cm9..try queen anne's revenge or biohazard..

Queen Anne's Revenge: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2161091
BioHazard RoM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927428
They're just customized CyanogenMod, and i've already have problems with CyanogenMod. If i would try CM another time, i would stick to CM9 Unofficial
Even if Queen Anne's Revenge is aimed to best battery life and it's made by an italian (as me ). It's interesting...
I think i'm gonna flash one of those modified stocks! Wish me luck!
At the end of all my tests, i've decided to keep using F.A.W. (Rls 3, from the same branch of Rls 2): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626827
It's simply a powered Samsung stock but it's rocking stable, really fast, enough good looking and with a huge battery life!
Perfect for my girlfriend!
Someday later, i may have to change ROMS from ICS cos' its out of date already... So, i like gaming quite alot of times lately and if i'm on a looooooong trip, i save battery extensively... I don't like themeing as much as other people so yea... Which one is best for me? 4.1.2 or 4.2.2? Don't mention ICS by the way cos' i know its stable fast etc etc...

i would choose 4.1.2...its more stable than 4.2.2.. so far only 2 roms that have amazed me with performance and battery life. express999 and remICS JB...Thats just my opinion...the choice is yours..

For me, i prefer 4.2.2 because i like all the features. Also with kernel 3.4, it is really smooth with gaming performance. Also, about the battery, sir arco already fixed the short battery life in kernel 3.4. But it might be not better then 4.1.2. But for me, i like 4.2.2 more. And i prefer cyanogenmod, of course

yup,4.2.2 has so many features which sometimes make 4.1.2 looks old and boring.... these features are the reason why i constantly switch between cm10 and cm10.1
