Usb cable issue - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have the same problem?
when the usb charging cable plugs into the phone...there's a slight play/free room while plugged?

Not really. It just unplugs very easily. Wouldn't sweat it really unless you have sloppy charging issues. Try a different cord and see if you have a tighter one that works better if you do. I am going to be doing the wireless charging mod to save my USB port anyways. I miss the charging dock of the galaxy nexus greatly because I hardly ever used my USB port.

Agreed. And it's not the phone's microUSB port. It's the cable included. It's quite pathetic. I failed charging my phone once because it was JUST A BIT OFF because of this looseness with the cable. Ugh.
On another note, can one easily replace this microUSB cable and STILL reap the advantage of the 2mA charging adapter?

Should be able to unless your cord is bunk.

[Q] Charging Cable

This is probably a dumb question but what kind of USB cable would I buy if I wanted an extra charging cable. I don't know what the phone side of the cable is called (USB mini ?) I know it is slightly different than my camera but really close.
u can use ur old vibrant one if u have one thats what i did for extra

Just be sure you know what you are buying. Some will be charge only cables, which means they can't be used as a USB to transfer data.

Ahh. Now I see why my camera cable wouldn't fit. I didn't think there would be another form factor that was so similar. (But then again the 2nd gen Kindle has it's own form factor USB port)
I don't think my camera is charge only but it does have a block where some of the pins would go and so won't fit the Hercules.
Goto monoprice.com. Order a crapload of them of varying lengths. Get ones with ferrit cores if you want, but not necessary. They might help with data integrity of data transfers. I find that they get in the way. But monoprice has inexpensive cables of high quality. Almost all around a buck. Fast delivery too.
If you are looking for usb power bricks, make sure they are 5 volt outputs. Do not skimp here as this could hose your phone if cheap electronics send bad voltage to your phone.

There is no such thing as "bad voltage." All USB chargers are approx 5V but if it were a bad charger and was outputting 12volts or 1volt the phones charging circuity will handle it and either not charge at all or adjust accordingly. Bottom line is ANY USB charger will work (or not) but chances of it damaging the phone unless it was hitting it with 120VAC are very slim.
Lol this thread is probably making it more complicated for you. Just go on Ebay and search for micro USB cable and make sure it says charge/data. Most will have a phone manufacturer name in the title (HTC Samsung Motorola etc.) Any of them will work.

Yeah, I've been using my iPad charger for the phone quite a bit. Works great. I'm set on chargers I just need more cables.

If you are talking about strictly the usb cable itself then I'd say it doesn't matter. I use an HTC, Samsung, LG cable and they all work the same. If you are talking about the actual AC adapter make sure it's the right mA.

Could be the quality of the usb cable that you are using. Any well made cable should charge as fast as the stock one. Cheaply made ones may not. And price does not dictate what I mean by cheaply made, I have purchased some of the amazon basics cables and have been very happy with them.

No. The cables won't make a difference between one or the other.
Only the adapter matters in how fast your phone gets charged. I personally used cables that I had purchased from monoprice because the original one got bent and I don't notice any difference in charge speed.
I heard that some people have trouble with samsung usb cables not being reliable when using it for odin.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
that's a new 1...
Whered u get that info?
All (well made) USB cables are made for specific standards, all that's special is the nice rubber coating on the wires, & the plastic caps all that really makes a difference is the charger
@above again: unreliablr for odin would also be unreliable for data transfer, or any sort of communication with device, and would either signify a slow ass pc with usb 1.0, or ****ty usb cable...
Actually ****ty cable does affect charge rate. the charger itself is the key components and you might notice the difference, but when i plug it into my cars deck, the stock actually charges my phone and it gains charge even when used..however when i used a ****ty one, it would only sustain and even lose charge when used. In fact, when my phone was completely dead my stock was able to have it power on when connected, but with the **** cable i had to wait a good 5-10 mins before turning it on.
However, using the wall outlet will probably show only a small difference, but it really does matter. although using any of the brand cables moto, sammy, htc, you should be safe. Just be weary of generics. Oh and monoprice cable are good except the head... Well for me the gold plated one, the 2 little prongs that stick up... Wouldn't go up anymore so it doesn't really stick into my phone anymore.

If you look closely the PLUG has different amp ratings. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 plug is 2 amp, SGS 2 stock charger I think is 1 amp.. old blackberry chargers are 500mA or .5 amp.. its been my personal experience that higher amp chargers work more quickly. I use all Tab 10.1 chargers and see minimal difference with different cable.

The current rating of the adapter (the mA rating) is the maximum that adapter will output. Similarly, the current rating of your battery/device is the maximum that your device will input. So you do NOT need to match ratings; your device will only ask for as much as it can take. If you have a 50mA rated adapter but your device is capable of 100mA, it will only charge as if it were rated at 50mA because that's as much as the charger can provide. Similarly, if you have a 500mA rated charger but your device is only rated at 100mA, it will only ask for 100mA and there's no chance of frying your device or anything to that effect.

Cable

I'd like to buy a new and extra cable (not the charger) to connect my device to my computer and charge it then as well.
Apparently this kind of cable, micro data usb, seems to be universal. Is it really so as I don't want to damage it if I buy a generic cable.
Any help me would be great
I was also wondering this because I would like to buy a much longer cable since my power outlet is far from my bedside table.
The cables are universal, so any length would work for charging (data transfer not guaranteed).
Actually they are not that universal. While I dont have any technical specs there are quite large differences.
eg a PC USB slot will only deliver 500 mA UNLESS certain pins are connected that allows the connected device to tell the PC that it can take more than 500 mA. They will look the same but 1 cable will only deliver 500 mA & a different cable could deliver 1000 mA.
Another cable might be wired up for delivering power only from a USB slot or from the wall adapter, but at the same time not be able to do any data transfer.
To be sure I bought an Htc official cable.
You could always just buy a usb extender. That way you can use it for multiple things.
USB cables
Sorry to revive a dead thread, but there is some unclear info in here that I thought I could clear up:
Micro-USB cables are universal in the sense that they will all fit and to one degree or another charge your phone. The combination of the charger and the cable, however can yield wildly different charge rates. If you want fast charging:
1. Look at the small print on your wall charger and see what current level it will output. You're looking for something 1 amp or higher. Some chargers will say something like 500ma, which is 500 milliamps or half an amp, and that's slower.
2. Consider buying a special "charging" cable. These cables use the USB power that would normally be used for data to charge the battery faster, and thus they won't work as data cables when plugged into your computer. Here's an example of a charging cable from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-U...1367955673&sr=8-2&keywords=usb+charging+cable
Basically what you want to look for on your One V is in the power settings for the phone it should say "Charging (AC)" when you plug it in and *not* "Charging (USB)". With the AC setting you know you're getting as much charging power as you can get.
I use my old Blackberry charge/USB cable with my One V without issue.

Yeah, I don't even use my HTC cable anymore. I originally stopped using it because I dropped my phone while it was plugged into it and it bent the connector. However, I HATED how short it was!! Then, I noticed that my Blackberry cable had the same end on it, and I've been using that for USB tethering, and I use my Samsung bluetooth earpiece charger to just charge my One V. lol
Oh, and I use the HTC USB to wall socket adapter to plug in my ecig. XD
ah nicee!

I unintentionally bought some blackberry ones to have in my car, at my PC, at work, etc and they work great for me. I am just really careful about the wall adapter output because using my dad's tablet charger with micro usb killed my wife's optimus t.

Usb port tight fit?

When I put in my usb charger into my phone it feels like I have to give a good push it out it in. It makes me feel like it might break the charging port.
Anyone else ?

If you are using the provided usb cable then it should not be that tight as you are saying.
But there are many after-market usb cables which can be either too tight or too loose.
I would suggest you go to amazon.com and get the retail Samsung brand usb cable for the phone
and you should not have any problems. I got one from Amazon for less than $4 bucks shipped.
By having a usb cable which is really tight and hard to plug in it can eventually loosen the usb port on the phone.

Charging - data cable

I want to purchase a 6 or 9 foot cable for my note 8. Will any kind of cable be OK? I will be using the samsung wall plug with it. Thanks for your help!!
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
The only thing I can suggest is that you try it. But normally long USB cables do not have a happy ending. I have some short cables that will not charge the note.
You may want to get the thickest cable you can find and hope the thickness is in the copper and not cheap cladding.
I am using a 10ft cord from kindle. Works great. Got it at walmart
Sent from my GT-N5110 using xda app-developers app
I think the cable is good up to 2 meters (6 feet), any cable longer than that will result very slow charging or even does not charge at all.
The kindle one has no issues charging the note8. I was worried as l have heard nothing over 6ft but this one works just fine.
