Anyone know if a longer cable is available for the charger?..a Samsung one?
That should do:

I think you can find a 3m as well.

I assume this works for charging if used with the OEM samsung brick, right?
A little more hackish, but why not just use a Male to Female USB extension.

Yes, this works. You can do better than Amazon though:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303#1030304
Very high quality, can't beat the price. Much better alternative than spending $10-$20 for a knock-off OEM cable.

Yes! AFAIK Monoprice makes or at least has their house brand cables manufactured themselves. Their prices are amazing and their quality is a notch above the "premium" cables that Best Buy pushes on you.
I can also vouch for the Amazon Basics USB extenders as we use a ton of the 3m ones at work.
Remember that the Tab will slow charge unless you use a charger that can tell it to fast charge. Otherwise it thinks it's charging off a PC USB port and won't draw more than 500mA. I haven't measured the Samsung adapter to see if D+/D- are shorted, but on my Nexus One and Nook Color this trick works great

Yes, I have bought tons of stuff from them. 2 TV mounts about a year back...$50 each for top quality mounts (better than the $500 mounts Best Buy sells). Recently I have purchased about four micro-USB cables for my Evo (for the car, the house, the apartment, etc.). And I have also purchased audio cables from them.
Never a problem...great products, great pricing. Can't go wrong!

I use Amazon because I have prime and they deliver in 2 days for free, even for a $3 cable. In the past I have ordered TV mounts from MonoPrice, and they are absolutely fantastic as well. Great prices and great service.
Funny how for the same cable as mono price charges $2, Best Buy charges $40 and people just blindly walk in and pay it... guess that's what's keepin the doors open at bestbuy
Thanks for the info in this thread, the stock cable that came with it is way too short, kinda annoying actually.

little old but this is true. Their HDMI cables are better than the BB ones and pretty much anything out there. Don't be fooled by big marketing and shiny connections. Trust me, these work and they are GREAT. There was a BIG controversial show down between big names and the no names and well, guess who won.

Its not the cable. Its the USB ports on PCs. They only push out around 500mA. The tabs need around 2mA to get rolling.. Thats why we can charge on a wall socket while using it, and the PC wont charge it even if the screen is off. The Tab as to be off completely for the PC to charge it.

Thanks a bunch. I'll order one of those cables on Amazon since I have Prime. It's weird, even the official charger only charges about 5%/hour while in use and not a ton more than that while fully off.
Edit: I tried using an extender I found in my closet. When I hooked it up, the tablet went from 'charging (AC)' to 'discharging'. A message saying 'USB connection and 'MTP connection.

So, you're confirming that a USB extender does NOT work?
I've seen lots of reviews of longer cables on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Galaxy-Tablet...?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1315864961&sr=1-17) that say all these 3rd party longer cables DO NOT charge at the same rate as the OEM cable, even with the OEM charger
Has anyone else confirmed if a USB extender or any available 3rd party longer-than-OEM cable will still charge at the same rate as the OEM cable with OEM charger?

Yup. Samsung must've did something to their cable/charger so they only work with each other.
The microUSB cable is too short, and need a longer one. Will any of the long ones that pop up on ebay work fine or does it need to be a specific type of cable or something.

Yeah, I just wish (KICKSTARTER!) that someone made a microusb cable that didn't protrude so much from the end of the phone, making it a pain to hold comfortably in landscape mode. Even the right-angle microusb cables I have aren't good enough.
Somebody should really make one that sits flush against the phone, with some extra silicone padding along the base, so you can't even really tell that it's plugged in. It'd be a little pricier, being niche, but I'd buy it... and if marketed right, lots of others would too.

Good question, I don't know. Maybe someone else can chime in.
I can't decide between 6, 10 and 15 ft.
I was going to get the 15 ft until someone else mentioned the longer cables affect charging performance. I don't know if there is any truth to that.
Can someone who knows chime in please
I just bought two 15ft cables on monoprice for two bucks a pop. There's a lot of positive reviews, so my guess is that it works just fine

Totally off-topic but for everybody that buys cables from Monoprice, do you guys have free shipping code or something?
I know their products and prices are good. But it seems like unless I'm buying a lot of cables, the shipping doesn't justify the cost.
Charging isn't an issue over 6 feet, but if you're using it for data, don't go over 6 feet...
This is what I use. No issues.

If you are talking about strictly the usb cable itself then I'd say it doesn't matter. I use an HTC, Samsung, LG cable and they all work the same. If you are talking about the actual AC adapter make sure it's the right mA.

Could be the quality of the usb cable that you are using. Any well made cable should charge as fast as the stock one. Cheaply made ones may not. And price does not dictate what I mean by cheaply made, I have purchased some of the amazon basics cables and have been very happy with them.

No. The cables won't make a difference between one or the other.
Only the adapter matters in how fast your phone gets charged. I personally used cables that I had purchased from monoprice because the original one got bent and I don't notice any difference in charge speed.
I heard that some people have trouble with samsung usb cables not being reliable when using it for odin.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
that's a new 1...
Whered u get that info?
All (well made) USB cables are made for specific standards, all that's special is the nice rubber coating on the wires, & the plastic caps all that really makes a difference is the charger
@above again: unreliablr for odin would also be unreliable for data transfer, or any sort of communication with device, and would either signify a slow ass pc with usb 1.0, or ****ty usb cable...
Actually ****ty cable does affect charge rate. the charger itself is the key components and you might notice the difference, but when i plug it into my cars deck, the stock actually charges my phone and it gains charge even when used..however when i used a ****ty one, it would only sustain and even lose charge when used. In fact, when my phone was completely dead my stock was able to have it power on when connected, but with the **** cable i had to wait a good 5-10 mins before turning it on.
However, using the wall outlet will probably show only a small difference, but it really does matter. although using any of the brand cables moto, sammy, htc, you should be safe. Just be weary of generics. Oh and monoprice cable are good except the head... Well for me the gold plated one, the 2 little prongs that stick up... Wouldn't go up anymore so it doesn't really stick into my phone anymore.

If you look closely the PLUG has different amp ratings. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 plug is 2 amp, SGS 2 stock charger I think is 1 amp.. old blackberry chargers are 500mA or .5 amp.. its been my personal experience that higher amp chargers work more quickly. I use all Tab 10.1 chargers and see minimal difference with different cable.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA Premium HD app
The current rating of the adapter (the mA rating) is the maximum that adapter will output. Similarly, the current rating of your battery/device is the maximum that your device will input. So you do NOT need to match ratings; your device will only ask for as much as it can take. If you have a 50mA rated adapter but your device is capable of 100mA, it will only charge as if it were rated at 50mA because that's as much as the charger can provide. Similarly, if you have a 500mA rated charger but your device is only rated at 100mA, it will only ask for 100mA and there's no chance of frying your device or anything to that effect.
This morning I woke up and the microsd cable was broken, I guess in my sleep I bent it and it won't charge any more..(just the cable part) from the charger. Is there a place online to buy the oem original asus cable or something compatible? Something that will charge as fast as the original one.
I use a genuine BB cable from a 9900 Bold and it shows charging at AC rate, not USB.

Pretty much any micro usb cable from a reputable manufacturer will work (its the chargers where you get the differences). I've used my S3 cable, an old Motorola cable, and a monoprice (generic) cable for charging it and other devices with no problems.
Some generic cable don't work very well. I've had charging problems. You can get the Motorola cable pretty cheap on amazon.
Mine stopped working after about 3 weeks. The cable was never bent or even removed from the wall adapter either! It's very possible that you didn't bend the cable in your sleep, and instead the cable just stopped working like mine did. Since then, I've just been using one of my many HTC cables plugged in to the Asus wall adapter that came with my N7 FHD. It works perfectly!

This is true! I think the post you quoted would have been better stated by saying that any cable FROM A REPUTABLE MANUFACTURER should work just fine. Not just ANY cable because, unfortunately, there are many 3rd party cables that are just junk. If you have a cable from your current or previous phone, and it's a phone manufactured by a reputable company, then it should work without a problem.

Fixed my post I've never bought a no name cable but I can imagine if they're cheaply/poorly built they'll have terrible impedance and charge too slow.
Also note that really long cables will charge slower (unless they use lower guage wire)
For Monoprice, avoid the 24AWG ferrite bead ones (the ones that go for about $1 for a 3-foot one). While they seem like quality cables at first, I've had 4 and 3 of them have gotten flaky over time (the D+/D- ones broke on one of them so it doesn't talk to a computer anymore, and the other two often lose connection when moved around).
I have a bunch of different standard cables from eBay (different lengths), even the colorful ones. All work without problems. It's a digital cable ( 2 data and 2 power lines). if it's not broken or shorted any cable should work. Of course if you approach the maximum length (5m -15 ft) of usb and the cable is not up to the specs it may start failing but for 1-3 m should not have problems with any cable. If we speak about the power adapter (not cable) it's another story. There are many variants and not all provide the specified power, but if the specs are correct the 2A and 3A ones should work. Car adapters , an even more different story. I'm not using my Nexus 7-2 in car (have a build in Android navi now), but I used the first gen Nexus 7, and I tried 3 different adapters until I found one which provided enough power to charge the tablet with GPS and navi on (most will let the tablet slowly discharge). I think this model require less power so maybe even some which did not work will work now.

I haven't actually been able to test the time it takes to fully charge since I usually charge it overnight but I'll try to run some tests and time how long it takes with the different cables and I'll post my findings. From what I've seen so far from using it, I haven't noticed any difference with charge time between the stock cable and the monoprice one With my experience using it to charge my droid razr (xt912) definitely no difference with charge time compared to the stock motorola usb cable. I'm sure with the n7 it's totally fine.
Just wanted to know what are specs for the charger/cable. I can get tons of aftermarket chargers for my ip4 at a buck or two at the most from asian sellers from asia. am I right that I simply need a 2a charger, with a mini usb cable at the end? just looking into getting extra for when they decide to release it to the public.

Anyone tried to trace pinout yet? IIRC, I read somewhere 2 of the pins in the cable were shorted, signaling to the OP that it was to take quick charge. I'll try to find that. The same article / post discussed temp sensor limiting amount of charge since the OP would get hot. Not as quick as true fast charge, but faster than standard.
edit: found it: https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/vooc-charging-seems-to-be-working.12639/ by one of XDA's well known devs, @graffixnyc - Thanks Patrick!
Lipo can explode if you hot too much or overcharges, google "lipo explosion"
I have a question. If you use the OPO charger, but plug a usb extender into it(and the OPO cable goes into a usb female at the end of the extender cable), does does having that non-OPO cable in the chain slow things down? Mine does seem to charge slow, but I've honestly never connected the OPO cable directly from the charger to the phone to compare. I honestly don't understand how anyone could use it like that (or any other cable coming with a phone). Not even long enough to stretch from an outlet to a table top if the outlet is right next to the table. My Dell Venue 8 Pro cable is amazing(ly ridiculous). It's maybe a foot long. I guess they expect us to charge our devices on the floor? With the DV8P case the cable would barely even reach the floor!
i can confirm that using the OPO wall charger with a 3rd party usb cable does result in a slower charge time. I tried 2 different cables-- both were of different gauges and lengths-- both resulted in different charge times and were all at least 2-3x slower then the OPO cable. anybody with knowledge as to what kind of cable OPO is using and where we can buy longer versions?

I can also confirm slower charging using the stock charger with aftermarket cable. But most of my cables are cheaper, is it possible that the gauge of the wire inside the cable is higher on opo cable? Allowing more amps through?
Also, @effluent , if using an aftermarket cable slows things down, I'm assuming putting an extension in the middle will have very similar negative impacts.

You want a charger cable that won't fail.... Stop buying them online. I've bought them everywhere online and they just can't compete with the usb/charger cable from tmobile.... Maybe be the same for other service providers. Plus you get 30 days to refund or exchange.... So you know after a month if it's worth it which it is.... Those teeth won't sit down and ruin the quality of the charge like 90 percent of the cables online.

You just have to find the right cable. I went through this same thing with my galaxy s5. I got the application "galaxy charging current" and compared the milliamps of all my cables. Some would only do 4-500 ma. Some would do 1800ma. It just depends on the cable. I'm using the cable I got with a ps4 right now, and it will do 1800, and it's 4 feet long.

Try a fast-charge cable, it has the correct pinout (shorted pins) for fast charging.

And you can't overcharge, it's the phone that demands the current, not the charger that pushes the current through the phone. The phone's charging circuit protects the phone for overcharging and handshakes the right charging current with the connected charger. Charging Android is quiet a complex thing...
