Longer MicroUSB charging cable - Galaxy S III Accessories

The microUSB cable is too short, and need a longer one. Will any of the long ones that pop up on ebay work fine or does it need to be a specific type of cable or something.

Longer cable cause greater power loss
i bought a kindle3 last year, and the cable is very long. When i use it to connect my phone to USB port on laptop, my phone can't be recognized

The one that came with the phone was to long for me. I switched to the one that came with my one x. I use the one x charger to it looks better made

That is just a faulty cable.

Perhaps you can use an existing USB cable?
I've plenty of these from my past units - I find Nokia cables very well made
My N8 USB cable have locking clasps at the micro-USB side and works pretty well for fast charging
For longer cable needs I bring with me the charging cable of my Logitech K800 wireless keyboard
Great quality USB cable for charging and connecting to KIES or just plain transferring files

I have one white original for my kindle, but using it with gs3 charger, as it's twice as long...

I always look to monoprice.com for cables. You are guaranteed to get a high quality cable. You can get one shipped for maybe $1 more than those ebay cables.

Huge +1000 on Monoprice cables. They also have USB AC & Car power adapters. Super easy to stock up on extra cables & chargers.

That's the whole point, to make the cable that came with the charger longer. That way one can lay in bed, charge, and use the phone at the same time.

Yeah, I just wish (KICKSTARTER!) that someone made a microusb cable that didn't protrude so much from the end of the phone, making it a pain to hold comfortably in landscape mode. Even the right-angle microusb cables I have aren't good enough.
Somebody should really make one that sits flush against the phone, with some extra silicone padding along the base, so you can't even really tell that it's plugged in. It'd be a little pricier, being niche, but I'd buy it... and if marketed right, lots of others would too.

Good question, I don't know. Maybe someone else can chime in.
I can't decide between 6, 10 and 15 ft.
I was going to get the 15 ft until someone else mentioned the longer cables affect charging performance. I don't know if there is any truth to that.
Can someone who knows chime in please

I just bought two 15ft cables on monoprice for two bucks a pop. There's a lot of positive reviews, so my guess is that it works just fine

Totally off-topic but for everybody that buys cables from Monoprice, do you guys have free shipping code or something?
I know their products and prices are good. But it seems like unless I'm buying a lot of cables, the shipping doesn't justify the cost.

Charging isn't an issue over 6 feet, but if you're using it for data, don't go over 6 feet...
This is what I use. No issues.

[Q] Long USB Cable

Anyone found a long (around 6') usb cable that charges at a good rate? Need it to run a cable in my dash to power my car dock. The standard one is going to be too short and it seems like there's a handful of crud ones out there, done some searching but haven't come up with much yet.
Thanks
dont know if im allowed to say this, but monoprice has them in 6 ft and 10 ft, i was looking for one also!
thanks I'll check em out, been lookin for reviews on the charging quality, seems a lot charge just as fast as the battery is discharged

I could be mistaken, but I think that's just a consequence of charging over usb which doesn't output a very strong current compared to the wall or your car.

I ordered a couple of 6' from monoprice that should be here any day.
I use a USB extender that I got from an old usb network card.
I have a couple of usb extension cables but I think they're interfering with my signal. For some odd reason I get network errors if I use them to charge. Might just be coincidence though.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Could be a coincidence, I'm not really referring to charging whith a computer. I ment using the cable with a usb wall or car adapter. Also it's a given you charge faster when plugged into the car though, dc vs ac current.

I actually bought a 10' one from microcenter.. try your local geeked out PC place.

MonoPrice is where I get all my cables for my Androids. They are amazing quality, much better than the one that it came with. You can also get them upward of 16 feet, which is what I have so I can play with it while in bed
heh 6' would probably do it for me, might get a 10' just in case, im in the process of fiberglassin powered usb ports into my car dash, ill probably leave in behind the dash to hook up the car dock and keep it clean
I've had bad experiences with micro usb cables longer than 5 feet. The First was with my head unit in my car. When I would plug it in, the signal would spontaneously drop. I exchanged it with a 3 foot one of the same gauge, and I haven't lost signal yet.
Same issue happened when I plugged it into my desktop with an identical cable. I was told that there wasn't enough juice to both charge and transfer data.
Those monoprice cables, has anybody else had good experiences with them?

well just got my cables from monoprice, i got 6' as well as 10', figured the 15 is overkill for anything i need. So far the seem to be working well for wall and car charging, as well as pc syncing.
The charging current is controlled by the source and not the cable, correct? So if I replaced the wall charger that came with the phone witha 10' cable it would work fine, right? It's just a bit too short to both charge my phone and be in reach of my bed currently

I would say it depends on the quality of the cable as well, crappy cable = bad charging, but so far the monoprice cables seem pretty solid. I'm happy with the results, though I wish i got a 15' just to test it out. I got 6 cables and all are in working order.
Also as the above comment state thread closed I would agree, monoprice is good, and was exactly what I was looking for.

Yes! AFAIK Monoprice makes or at least has their house brand cables manufactured themselves. Their prices are amazing and their quality is a notch above the "premium" cables that Best Buy pushes on you.
I can also vouch for the Amazon Basics USB extenders as we use a ton of the 3m ones at work.
Remember that the Tab will slow charge unless you use a charger that can tell it to fast charge. Otherwise it thinks it's charging off a PC USB port and won't draw more than 500mA. I haven't measured the Samsung adapter to see if D+/D- are shorted, but on my Nexus One and Nook Color this trick works great

Yes, I have bought tons of stuff from them. 2 TV mounts about a year back...$50 each for top quality mounts (better than the $500 mounts Best Buy sells). Recently I have purchased about four micro-USB cables for my Evo (for the car, the house, the apartment, etc.). And I have also purchased audio cables from them.
Never a problem...great products, great pricing. Can't go wrong!

I use Amazon because I have prime and they deliver in 2 days for free, even for a $3 cable. In the past I have ordered TV mounts from MonoPrice, and they are absolutely fantastic as well. Great prices and great service.
Funny how for the same cable as mono price charges $2, Best Buy charges $40 and people just blindly walk in and pay it... guess that's what's keepin the doors open at bestbuy
Thanks for the info in this thread, the stock cable that came with it is way too short, kinda annoying actually.

little old but this is true. Their HDMI cables are better than the BB ones and pretty much anything out there. Don't be fooled by big marketing and shiny connections. Trust me, these work and they are GREAT. There was a BIG controversial show down between big names and the no names and well, guess who won.

Its not the cable. Its the USB ports on PCs. They only push out around 500mA. The tabs need around 2mA to get rolling.. Thats why we can charge on a wall socket while using it, and the PC wont charge it even if the screen is off. The Tab as to be off completely for the PC to charge it.

Thanks a bunch. I'll order one of those cables on Amazon since I have Prime. It's weird, even the official charger only charges about 5%/hour while in use and not a ton more than that while fully off.
Edit: I tried using an extender I found in my closet. When I hooked it up, the tablet went from 'charging (AC)' to 'discharging'. A message saying 'USB connection and 'MTP connection.

So, you're confirming that a USB extender does NOT work?
I've seen lots of reviews of longer cables on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Galaxy-Tablet...?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1315864961&sr=1-17) that say all these 3rd party longer cables DO NOT charge at the same rate as the OEM cable, even with the OEM charger
Has anyone else confirmed if a USB extender or any available 3rd party longer-than-OEM cable will still charge at the same rate as the OEM cable with OEM charger?

Chargers for the Galaxy S3

I seem to be having issues with chargers for my phone.... What works for you guys???
I'm using a PowerGen 3AMP Charger & Motorola MicroUSB Cable... Nothing else seems to charge fast enough, and I have a bag full of 20 broken MicroUSB cables... I panic and think my MicroUSB Port on my phone is broken each time, but if I buy a new cable, things are fine. The Motorola MicroUSB cables are the most durable it seems...

Stock whatever came in the box when I got the s3. Wouldn't want to mess with any other chargers not made for my phone it could result in my battery exploding. Read somewhere using different charger can cause that.
Im in the middle of looking for a good combination. My 2yr old broke the USB cable so I've been looking for one that does the job. So far they suck.
Any inexpensive suggestion would be nice.

I'm using my Kindle charger and some random 1Amp charger I bought for like $1.60 on eBay. Nothing's exploded yet. I dunno about fast charging, I just charge mine at the end of the day and have no hurry (thus, sometimes I use the Kindle charger if I'm lazy).

I use the charger from my galaxy tab 10.1. Works great. No problems. Charges me up about twice as fast as the phone's charger will.
I bought this from ebay, and it works well - charges pretty fast. 100% in less than 2 hours I'd say.

In short, stick w/ the Samsung charger.

Look for a charger that's rated at least 1A (1000mA) and is not from a generic manufacturer. Read: Samsung, Apple, Motorola, HTC, HP, Amazon. I personally do not like others. Watch out for fakes, esp if you buy an Apple charger.
Buy a 28/24awg or thicker micro USB cable. Monoprice (can be found on Amazon) has some and I believe Medialink cables are 24/20awg, which is even better. Remember at least 24awg on the voltage carrying lines, a lower number is better.

The problem with the cables is that they rarely specify the thickness of the cable. You pretty much have to eyeball it from the pictures.

[REQUEST] Long Charging Cable

I am looking for a really long charging cable. I know about mediabridge, however I am looking for something longer. It needs to be minimum of 8ft. It needs to be a high speed charging cable. Data is nice but not necessary. HTC's OEM cable is amazing, but I need a cable which is at least 8ft. I have looked at previous forums for this and have not found anything, that is why I am posting. PRICE IS NOT A CONCERN, I'll pay $20 for such a cable, it just needs to be good and high quality and have rapid charging. Thanks.

You really gotta search some more. Amazon has GREAT cables, but mediabridge is probably the best. I have a few of these myself. How are you saying that you need longer cables? Mediabridge has a 10ft cable and you said you only need a 8ft one? Also, rapid charging is mostly a concern of the charger itself and not the cable (unless the cable quality is absolute crap).
Yeah it may be easy to find long cables, but it's not so easy to find ones that charge as well/fast as the short, authentic HTC ones. I'd also be interested in this - did anyone already buy and experience a quickly charging, long cable?

Placebo. Wires don't charge faster or slower. You might have a better connection or so with a gold plated connector, but it's no different if the wire is from china or if it's an authentic HTC one. There is LITERALLY no difference between the original HTC wire, the mediabridge 10ft wire, 6ft wire, or the coiled 2ft wire all of which I own at least when we're talking about charging time.

There is a difference. My eBay 6ft wire charges about 3-4x slower than the authentic HTC one. 8-9hrs vs 2-3hrs is no placebo.
My bad, I should clarify. There is no difference between real, quality usb wires. Like I said, you brought a crappy cable from eBay. You can google this if you're so inclined. There's no difference between two real usb cables. Also, "real" usb cables often have the usb certification logo on them.
Tldr; buy from a reputable seller that has good reviews. Should be little to no difference in charging.
Protip: Don't buy usb cables longer than 16ft
That's better - I didn't know there was such thing as USB certification. Basically don't trust eBay unless the product is genuine/expensive. Better off going to some big-name company like best buy.
Years ago people were wholly convinced that every and all cables are the same, which is just not true. Somehow some knock-off cables have some slow charging wires or whatever. Don't know how or why, but just a warning that if you buy some random cheap cable off eBay, it might not work nearly as well as a genuine product.

Technically speaking, it all depends on the materials they used and how the wires are enclosed. I would say most of the cables you see are indeed pretty much the same, but I generally do buy things from eBay. It could've just been a fluke. I haven't had to change or buy new usb cables in a while, but in no way would I recommend getting a big-name wire like monster or whatever from your local electronics shop. Amazon should be fine if you read the reviews.
I also recommend Monoprice.com's cables. Variety of cable lengths and great customer service. No point to risk and sift through random eBay or Amazon offerings.
Monoprice 10ft 28/28AWG cable. Using the stock HTC charger. No difference in charging time.

Never cheap out on chargers, been hearing shocking stories lol. Use the USB with the HTC adapter provided. I got a 10ft tangle-free micro USB and works great.

Sorry but I think you're wrong....

Some USB Cables, while charging (on the same Adapter) generates an note on the screen... that the charge is very slow...
in addition I tested a few USB cables that do charge...but do not transmit data properly...
the Original HTC that came with the phone is some how unique....

The original cable is not unique. It's just a normal microUSB cable. There are charging-only microUSB cables (often included in external battery chargers) and there are also badly-made cables, but the One's cable is nothing special.

Like I said, placebo. All certified wires that charge + usb transfer should have very minimal differences. You either get crappy cables, or you don't. The only problem I've ever had is the connectors falling apart. Never had a usb cable that charged my phone slower using the same adapter and I've had quite a few different cables from eBay, Amazon, etc.

You'd think people would realize why this is important. Imagine how many devices you would eventually kill with wires of varying draw.

People just like to see things that aren't there. Some people just want to convince themselves that the shiny gold plated, carbon fiber monster cables are worth the 5000% or whatever ridiculous markup.

Better check a 5pin USB cable vs a 4pin USB cable... that's probably your problem. I got that all the time with my crappy rosewill cable once that I bought from newegg.
4pin vs 5pin makes a huge difference... especially when an OEM charger is at 2mA rating

broke my Nexus 7 microsd cable..where to find oem replacement?

This morning I woke up and the microsd cable was broken, I guess in my sleep I bent it and it won't charge any more..(just the cable part) from the charger. Is there a place online to buy the oem original asus cable or something compatible? Something that will charge as fast as the original one.
I use a genuine BB cable from a 9900 Bold and it shows charging at AC rate, not USB.
OEM cable for N7(2013)

Pretty much any micro usb cable from a reputable manufacturer will work (its the chargers where you get the differences). I've used my S3 cable, an old Motorola cable, and a monoprice (generic) cable for charging it and other devices with no problems.
Some generic cable don't work very well. I've had charging problems. You can get the Motorola cable pretty cheap on amazon.
Mine stopped working after about 3 weeks. The cable was never bent or even removed from the wall adapter either! It's very possible that you didn't bend the cable in your sleep, and instead the cable just stopped working like mine did. Since then, I've just been using one of my many HTC cables plugged in to the Asus wall adapter that came with my N7 FHD. It works perfectly!

Haha I was scrolling down to see if anyone would mention monoprice and you beat me to it. But yes try monoprice. Just ordered their premium micro-b USB cables which is the type you're looking for and just received them yesterday. Very happy with my order. Can get what you're looking for for less than $1.50 and no shipping.

Can you please give me the link to the premium cable your ordered?? I ordered some from monoprice a while back for my old s2 and they charged slow..
Buy the amazonbasics one. Cheap, good quality, gold plated, nice thick feel to it and very long!

I have not tested it on the tablet, but I charge my phone all day with it at work. Using the OEM HTC outlet adapter, it provides AC charging.

Here's a link to one of the cables I bought: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=9761&seq=1&format=2
This one is the 3ft cable but they also have 3ft and 6ft premium cables in black and white. If you go back a page to the full listing of USB cables scroll down to the section USB 2.0 Cables - Micro-B Type and you'll see all the different cables you're looking for. The first 4 are the premium cables. I got both 3 and 6 ft cables and no problems with charging times.

The cable is a big factor in charge rates.

This is true! I think the post you quoted would have been better stated by saying that any cable FROM A REPUTABLE MANUFACTURER should work just fine. Not just ANY cable because, unfortunately, there are many 3rd party cables that are just junk. If you have a cable from your current or previous phone, and it's a phone manufactured by a reputable company, then it should work without a problem.

Fixed my post I've never bought a no name cable but I can imagine if they're cheaply/poorly built they'll have terrible impedance and charge too slow.
Also note that really long cables will charge slower (unless they use lower guage wire)
For Monoprice, avoid the 24AWG ferrite bead ones (the ones that go for about $1 for a 3-foot one). While they seem like quality cables at first, I've had 4 and 3 of them have gotten flaky over time (the D+/D- ones broke on one of them so it doesn't talk to a computer anymore, and the other two often lose connection when moved around).
I have a bunch of different standard cables from eBay (different lengths), even the colorful ones. All work without problems. It's a digital cable ( 2 data and 2 power lines). if it's not broken or shorted any cable should work. Of course if you approach the maximum length (5m -15 ft) of usb and the cable is not up to the specs it may start failing but for 1-3 m should not have problems with any cable. If we speak about the power adapter (not cable) it's another story. There are many variants and not all provide the specified power, but if the specs are correct the 2A and 3A ones should work. Car adapters , an even more different story. I'm not using my Nexus 7-2 in car (have a build in Android navi now), but I used the first gen Nexus 7, and I tried 3 different adapters until I found one which provided enough power to charge the tablet with GPS and navi on (most will let the tablet slowly discharge). I think this model require less power so maybe even some which did not work will work now.

I did two tests both using the Asus power adapter that came with the device and these are the specs for it from the Asus website:
Output:5.2V 1.35A/7W for other USB device
Input:100-240V AC, 50/60Hz universal
I attached two pictures using battery monitor widget. Just adding in too my n7 is unlocked and rooted but completely stock other than that. The first picture is with the Asus USB cable that came with the device and the second picture is with my 6ft premium cable from monoprice. Sorry if this isn't what you were asking for.

yeah was looking for the mA delivered to device...have you noticed any difference in how long it takes to fully charge the n7? I know there's tons of cables just looking for one with comparable performance to stock one.

I haven't actually been able to test the time it takes to fully charge since I usually charge it overnight but I'll try to run some tests and time how long it takes with the different cables and I'll post my findings. From what I've seen so far from using it, I haven't noticed any difference with charge time between the stock cable and the monoprice one With my experience using it to charge my droid razr (xt912) definitely no difference with charge time compared to the stock motorola usb cable. I'm sure with the n7 it's totally fine.
