Not sure what caused this or what exactly the problem is so I'll try to include everything about the issue and everything I've tried to correct it. Anyone who can help you will hereby earn my undying gratitude, rights to my soul (may not be much of it left but whatever hasn't been sold or lost, all yours ), and as if that wasn't enough, a modest Christmas (or belated Christmas) donation if anyone can actually abolish the issue. That being said here's what's up:
All started a few weeks ago, like I said not sure what caused the issue so I'll just list everything I did. I flashed a bunch of ROMs, Frosty, Jedi Invasion, Free GS3, and probably a couple more I can't remember. I also was trying to see if maybe I could get better reception at work and better data speeds overall. So I downloaded a bunch of modems from DocHoliday's T999 Modem thread and flashed a few, settled on UVDLJA as it gave me the best service. I also downloaded his aroma modem flasher after that but then still ended up using the afore mentioned modem. I also used his build.prop tweaks. Here's what I changed:
HSXPA= 3
HSDPA= 6
HSUPA= 24
GPRSCLASS= 12
After the modem switch and the tweaks I was getting unbelievable speeds (for me at least). I went from like 7.5mbps download and 1.2mbps upload to 24mbps upload and 2mbps upload. Now flash forward to tomorrow and I flash back an forth between I think Free GS3 and Frosty (applying the build.prop edits every time I switch) and maybe something else and then later on I realize that my data is acting strange. It seems to not kick on. I have to hit stop and refresh a few times and then it clicks on and loads fine. I try to speed test same thing. I try to play a YouTube video, it only plays for like 30 seconds, stalls, goes, stalls, then doesn't start back up. However, I tried to download a new ROM and it dls at like 1mb/s the whole time after taking around a minute to start. The problems gets to where every other time I use my data this occurs. So, I switch ROMs multiple times, no build.prop edits done, same thing. The Jedi Invasion ROM worked better than the rest, for some reason unknown to me, but the issue still occurs. I re flashed all kinds of modems, no solution. Tried the Paranoid Android ROM cuz I wanted to try it. Data hardly ever worked on that. Would get stuck on 3g and didn't like to change to H+. Worked sometimes, but more often, not. Flashed to Wicked v3 and it worked pretty good, but after the v5 update its almost as bad as Paranoid Android. I even tried wiping my data, stupidly I did this before restoring my original nandroid backup, and even noobier erased all my nandroida when formatting data thus loosing it. So basically that's it.
Not familiar with apn's, vpn's, or for that matter much of anything complex either. Like I said though ANY help would be incredibly appreciated. I tried posting in DocHoliday's post but got no response. Also mentioned it in the Paranoid Android thread since that ROM was insanely hazardous to my data. Also mentioned it in the Wicked thread after the v5 update crippled me. Hoping for my Christmas miracle here. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies and Merry Christmas to all!

Add the following to APN:
Proxy: 216.155.165.050
Port: 8080
Good luck.
Bah! Humbug!
I'm experiencing something similar however am on Cm10. My data will act very funny like yours and times out and stalls etc... But only after I toggle data. If I reboot and leave data on and alone it works but then after it acts EXACTLY like what your describing.

Enrique Iglesias is that you? Haven't had much time to test but I applied the settings you listed and rebooted. So far my browser seems to be working much better but I've only been able to use it for like 5 min. Hopeful though. Although YouTube won't work period now. I pull up the app and just get a load screen... Weird, it just almost seems like it doesn't register that it's supposed to be sending and receiving data for some reason. But w/e if that's all that doesn't work I can live with it (I only really use it to keep my little ones entertained in times of need or for a quick classical music fix for 'Em, but I can just dl that stuff and put it on my ext sd). I got my fingers crossed! Once the twins get put to bed I'll test it out more. I thanks!

Yeah, saw your post about it when I was searching the threads, but yeah with Paranoid Android it was downright awful. Didn't even get to stay on it long enough to play around with all the goodies on it . Had a problem with CM with my SG2 where it would occasionally hang like it does now but mostly it "worked" but I only averaged like 3mbps dl, phew. Wish that data toggle deal would be the case for me. Mine just does it regardless though. Hoping Enrique's solution continues to work though...fingers still crossed.

Okay, so I was cruising the Wicked thread from the last couple days and found this from garyx24:
WDCDMA will always give you a 4G data signal unless you're in a place absolutely with no data signal at all. Auto will downgrade your 4G signal to 2G in places of low data coverage so you can save battery. So if you want your 4G to be up even in places where Tmobile gets low signal have it on WDCDMA but if you don't care that you will be downgraded to 2G in low signal spots keep it at auto.
So far using this I've been able to surf my browser np and even use YouTube, although for some reason, only shorter videos, clicked on an hour long Beethoven Symphony and the "More from Beethoven" videos comes up but the video just sits there. Maybe if I waited more than like 30 seconds it would have come up, but who the hell's got that kinda time, right? Think you'd be able to try it and let me know if it work for you. I would like to try out some CM based ROMs and of this works then I'd finally be able to. Again though, only been testing this for like 5 minutes. I did have to erase the proxy and port settings because YouTube still wouldn't load after changing to WDCDMA. Not sure how much battery it'll use either but I've got the 4200 Hyperion so it shouldn't really be an issue, for me at least. Although with the new Wicked v5 its killing that baby in like 12 hours so I may be forced to switch ROMs any way. Gotta try to earn how to diagnose my battery issues now (god I love this site. Unlimited knowledge at the click of a mouse). Was actually trying to do that but the data issue got so bad I had to try to get it situated first and foremost. When you've gotta reload pages over and over digging through threads is just about unbearable. Sorry, way off topic... Anyways, definitely lemme know how it goes it you try this. Thanks.
I'll give his APN a try.. Very very new to gsm like yesterday new...

Sweet! Christmas miracles for everyone! And when you say new as in like yesterday, and your in the T999 threads, does that mean you just got a T999? Cuz that would be another Christmas miracle. I've seen your work before and it's definitely The s**t. imho we've got the best S3 ROMs (at least US variants) and it would rock if we got a top tier themer to add to our amazing devs. .

NO DICE! So the WDCDMA bombed out shortly after I posted. Reverted to your suggestion and it was going fine and then, bam! Went to come check the thread and it took a solid 45 seconds just to load this page. God Damn. I almost wanna just sell this one off and go buy another from like cl or something. Although this annoying little thing keeps telling me that would just be a big bunch of d****bagger so I don't (guess that's like my conscience of something right, what a pain in the A). I mlost thought you struck gold right off the bat. Seems like it worked for uber though. Glad someone got something resolved, lol. Any more ideas, anyone?
What modem are you on...update to newest one. Also I live in Chicago as well and even though they announced us as reformed 4g it is still in process . if you are in a area where they are doing tower work you will notice horrible data but once its finished you will be happy. I suggest you travel around and see if it happens in all areas. It was like that by my work in glenviw for a little while now I get 24-26 download at work so be patient it will get better.
I am using UVDLJA but I've tried them all. Hopefully your right, I live in the western burbs but work right by Midway, and don't really hardly ever get a chance to use my phone during work, as I get absolutely no signal inside (although every other service provider does, but that's a whole nother story). So I'll make an effort to try it around there when I get back. I find it hard to believe though that everyone with Tmobile in my area is having this issue. And it's not just like I'm getting slow data, it just flat out is cutting on and off. Although I'm not gonna rule out any possibilities. I'll swing by Tmobile later this week and see if by chance anyone in the store has any idea what's going on in their company (doubtful I know, but like I said, not ruling anything out). Just downgraded to an older version of wicked. Having slow data but seems a little more stable, so far at least...
What if I Odin back to stock... Anyone think that has a chance a working. Also I've thought back some and I'm thinking that the lidroid 23 toggle mod may have something to do with this. That was really the only addition to evilart1's new version of Wicked and just thinking back seems like most of the ROMs I have been using since this issue started have used it as well. Back on the previous, Wicked version, with only a 15 toggle mod and it occasionally takes a while to load, but for the vast majority of the time it works like a charm. Anyone think that could possibly have something to do with it for some reason?

So i have rooted my phone a while back, and been flashing new roms back and fourth , but not sure why recently after a couple of weeks, i have seen my 3g signal drop without me doing anything, on the same places were i usually get perfect 3g signal,
i updated the radios to recent ones, update the profile , PRL profile etc so see if these was the problem that 3g drops all the time,
so i have flash myths , cya mods roms, MIUI , and evry other sense roms like HD SACS and fresh evo etc and i even try AOSP roms to see if the sense roms was the problem, but with AOSP Roms it even drops more,
example of what i mean:
i will be using the internet were it takes forevr to load cuz 3g dont kick in,
than out of no where 3g works perfectly for like 5 to 10 mins,
than after a while i try to use any application that uses internet like facebook, pandora, youtube etc, the 3g starts acting up and doesnt kick in , does this evry other 10 mins which its annoying the crap out of me.
PLEASE IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME I WILL EVEN DONATE $20 TO 30 BUCKS FOR YOUR TIME BY PAYPAL.
NOT SURE WHAT OTHER OPTIONS I HAVE, AND I REALLY DONT WANT TO REPLACE MY PHONE AND IM PRETTY SURE I CANT BRING IT TO SPRINT TO FIX IT CUZ ITS ROOTED, OR CAN I?
THANKS
Here is the best thing to try for starters.
Start completely fresh.
Download this zip
http://www.mediafire.com/file/ikylelx99c49133/Calkulin's_FORMAT_ALL.zip
flash that zip from recovery and it will format everything without a doubt.
Then flash a rom like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
stock rooted ruu - simple and no modifications.
If you are still having issues after this, then it is possible that you are having hardware issues.
It wouldn't hurt to try updating your radios as well
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485 - the combo one at the top should get them all.
+1 those are the best suggestions than I think can be given to help with your situation. I had the same problem on my hwd 003 evo sent it in and got a hwd 004 speeds were better I think it was a hwd problem cause I couldn't find a fix.

so i use it over the weekend, and after a day it starting acting up again, i was happy when it work almost for a full day and than it starting acting up where 3g wasnt kicking in, thanks for ur advise and i guess i have to replace this evo.
you might wanna try going to a Sprint store with service center, maybe they can figure it out there, as you've basically tried everything one can do at home to try and fix it, and are still having problems.

Here's one to accompany that. It may not even be your phone. Call *2 and ask if they are having network issues in your area. Mine was doing the same thing after a storm (we had tornaders...yes, tornaders...live with it). It was back up withing 48 hours, then again, I reported the issue.
I'm sure they have some pretty good monitoring systems in place; however, if the guys behind the NOC are anything like the guys here at my work...well I won't say anything, but you can piece together the picture.

thanks though for the suggestion, not sure if rooting the phone would effect the signal problem,

Just because you see it drop to 1x doesn't mean anything. That means that sense doesn't want you to know about it. so there is no icon for 1x since aosp is different and doesn't lie it tells you the truth. I thought things like this from time to time until I did this. Flashed stock. Speedtest... sat in the same spot flashed CM, speedtest. Both were about the same.. some tests were faster on CM then sense and some were faster on sense then CM. I get my email... and my market downloads never fail... So I can't really complain.
I have been reading everyday since the day it came out... the same day I bought it.
Hope you all don't mind but I have quite a few questions/frustrations
1st, Battery life is killing me... cannot make it through a day, I have put my screen on auto which seems a lot dimmer than set to 40 or 60%. All I do is play some solitaire, check mail a lot, a little bit of net, maybe 30 minutes of calls (tops) a few txt msgs, with maybe 2 hours or slightly more of screen time.
External speaker is embarrassing... tried showing a video to a friend with an iphone and felt like flushing the damn phone after he did the same.
Data connectivity is still hit and miss... one minute I have 4 bars of 4G and the next I have none.
I am on (details in sig) 4.0.4 (Craig Gomez version) with the newest radios. The device is a serious work tool for me so I really don't have the time to try different ROMS or kernels all the time... I need it always ready for calls, emails and occasional RDP or Logmein sessions .
For those of you have actually tried many/experienced in the world of various ROMs & kernels... do you have a suggestion of what to do with my setup?
Between the battery and data connectivity I feel the phone is close to crap... my friends with Razors have none of these problems and I feel like I am ready to snap.
BTW... if you could be even more kind... if you have a suggestion on what to run, could you suggest a brief set of instructions... i.e. nandriod, full wipe, install this first that second...
Thanks for any and all help... I sure would like to come up with or remember a reason why I have this and not a razor max.
Do you have the latest radios? That will make a difference. I do know the speaker is weak. There's not much to do but for a volume hack, some roms have it enabled.
Id ask for a replacement phone if battery is that bad and you can't get a decent signal anywhere but other phones can. Sounds like a defective phone.
I've been using Android Revolution for about 2 weeks, and as for today, I don't think there's anything as good as it. It's just like stock, just a little bit faster. I have great battery life, 5 to 6 Hours of screen on time, AutoBrightness, sync on, wifi always on, etc, it's pretty good, you should give it a try.
I've also used AOKP (with FrancoKernel and with stock kernel), and even tho I liked all extra features, in my experience, with screen off, it drains battery a looot faster that stock/ARHD.
I used an app called equalizer to fix the speaker

Autobrightness will kill your battery more than a static 40 or 60%.
2 hours of screen on time seems normal for the Verizon Nexus.
Try the volume + app for your speaker problems.
There are some kernels that have sound boosts built in.
Signal drops means you should exchange the phone. Use the insurance.
Honestly if you hate the phone as much as it sounds, just get a different phone.

Perfect response.
Don't get me wrong... I in no way "hate" phone, if I did I would have gotten rid of it.
I'm frustrated not stupid.
I am amazed that Verizon hasn't done something about it... most of the buyers of this phone are not IT savvy rooters... my phone works a lot better than stock, I cannot imagine how frustrated someone on 4.0.2 would be.
Anyway... I am going to take it back to stock and return it... guess I will try it (the new one) out stock but I know I will want it rooted. Guess I'll try some of the suggested software\ROMS.
I wonder what a stock one is coming with these days?

Well... things just changed again.
Just talked with Verizon and he asked if I installed the update pushed out on the 25th? I told him I will give it a shot and get back to them.
Anyone got instructions for reverting back to stock?

I recently moved in to a new apartment for college and unfortunately my signal is very poor while inside the building.
This is really the only place on campus that I don't get great signal unless I get close to the window and pray that my phone decides to connect.
I've briefly looked into possible solutions but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions/opinions on what I should/ could do.
I briefly looked into the Sprint AIRAVE, which I should be able to get. However, unless I can get it for free then I really don't see it as a viable solution, especially since my contract is up soon and I can just move to another carrier.
At this point I see my options being:
1. Get the AIRAVE.
2. Purchase a 3RD party signal booster (If cheaper than Sprint one).
3. Come up with some kind of DIY solution
4. Change some things on my phone in the hope that it improves.
5. Switch to another carrier.
What do you guys suggest doing/ think is the best option?
Are there ay other options I've missed?
Current Setup on my Epic 4g:
Rom: CM9 STABLE build from 8/10
Kernal: Shadow v0.6.3.3
PRL: FC09
I suggest option #1: Call Sprint and throw a fit, and have them provide you an airave
You may be better off with option 5.
The Airave is more of a cop-out solution for Sprint and their craptastic network. However, if it works for you then by all means go with it.
I've been with them for over 10 years now and haven't seen much network improvement in my city in the last 5 years. There are big patches of dead and weak signal spots all over. Hell, I can step outside my office building and find a dead spot in one 5 foot span, then move out of that span and be in a 3-signal strength spot.
I'm waiting a bit longer to see if their network will improve in my area. Otherwise, I will most likely jump carriers.

My family has used them for about 10 years total, with a brief break when we lived in england. I've never really had any problems with getting signal where I needed it before now. But yeah, at this point they better make a good offer if they want me to stay with them.
So I called sprint, they wanted me to go through some troubleshooting stuff and ended up asking me if I was rooted.
I had a bunch of back and forth with him and he claimed that being rooted/not on stock caused my phone to show no "vital signs" and that even if I am using the proper PRL it doesn't matter. Everything he said sounded like a bunch of policy stuff and he never gave a clear explanation of why it mattered if I am rooted. Anyways he said I could restore to stock/factory settings and then he would call me back latter and we would troubleshoot stuff.
I am going to be doing the flowing:
1. Backup everything
2. Odin back to stock (non-rooted + update)
3. Go through the troubleshooting, even though I know it won't make a difference.
4. Hopefully get the AIRAVE for free.
5. Go back to my current setup.
I've also noticed that turning 4G on may actually make a difference in signal (Since there is 4G in atlanta).
Does anyone have in thoughts about this?
Am I wrong in saying that being rooted has NO effect on connectivity?

If you do anything with Sprint that involves troubleshooting, you should be on 100% stock. Also, never admit to rooting, even though there is that PDF from internal Sprint mail around these forums saying it's basically okay for customers to be rooted. It's way easier to just get back on stock and step through troubleshooting, than dealing with a script following CSR on the matter.
It takes an experienced flasher all of 3 minutes to get from stock back to previous setup or a new custom setup. So not a big deal.
Turning on 4G is an entirely different radio; hence you would have differing signal strengths from 4G to 3G.

Maybe try the nexus modem and see if that improves signal. Some people say it has and got rid of dropped calls. Samsung is notorious for making awful modems, but Google made the Nexus one, so it is better for me and most people who have tried it.
I know really shouldn't have admitted to being rooted but I think I kind of wanted to argue with him about it, just to see what kind of reasoning they give.
And yeah, flashing back to my previous setup shouldn't be too hard. I already know for a fact that going to stock won't solve the problem,
I'm still testing the 4G thing since I can't really confirm if it is actually boosting the signal or not.

@xboxfanj: I thought about trying that the other day. I have to be on a CM7 rom to use it, correct?

Now there is a patch for CM10 as well. Nothing yet on stock or CM9.
Yeah I noticed that. I tried switching to PA1.99 and using the nexus modem but it didn't have any kind of effect in my apartment.
So I odined back to stock fc09.
The Sprint rep called me back, I told him it didn't have an effect (because it didn't).
He agreed to send me the AIRAVE at no charge so I should hopefully have it in a week or so.
After I get it all setup I'll update this thread with details as to whether or not it actually solves the problem.
Now time to root my phone again...

Received the AIRAVE today. Took a little bit of fiddling to get it setup right.
I now get pretty consistent signal, generally 5 full bars, throughout my apartment.
My only real complaint is that it decreases my internet download speed from over 100Mb/s to around 40Mb/s.
The decrease is unavoidable since I have to use the AIRAVE router functionality in order to have it and my computer hooked up.
However it did seem to increase my upload speed by about 5Mb/s once I increased the limit it had set by default.
It also seems to causes me to receive texts twice but that may have just been a one off thing.
Overall it has solved the issue and since it was free I can't really complain.
The double text is an occasional thing and probably will never happen again. I hooked my airave to my router instead of the modem as suggested and it works just fine and does not interfere with my throughputs.

This is how I have mine set up and it works perfect.
Mine is setup so that the AIRAVE connects to the wall and then to my laptop (it's probably hooked to a router/modem somewhere but it's dorm internet so I have no control over that).
It would probably be faster if I hooked it through a separate router but I don't really want to spend the money on one, and would need a pretty decent one since my school has one of the top 10 fastest internet connections in the country (if I had to guess number 3, behind the pentagon and google fiber).
I have been having a lot of problems with my new honey, namely in the signal department! I went through a whole thing with it right after activation...it worked, then didn't, then did...etc. A chat session, phone call, & 2 trip to the actual store (all in 1 day!) resulted in them doing a factory reset and sending me on my looney way. It seemed to have helped, for about a day and a half. Now it is dropping signal again! It seems to do so, sometimes, when I have the wifi on. But then sometimes not (I'm not sure if wifi is culprit or coincidence.)
The ATT store employees said I may have changed a setting (I'm sure I didn't as I don't know of any setting that would even cause that!) and also "explained" my signal will naturally fluctuate...(They think I am an idiot, obviously and of course the phone was working fine when I was there...duh!) They also gave me a new sim card.
I *really* want to love this phone! But I'm finding it frustratingly undependable. Texts won't send when I need them to. I'm not getting them either, always. Voice is hit or miss when it drops (sometimes it works, sometimes not.) I have ALSO noticed the signal is not as strong as my old beloved Cappy. That thing was a horse (and I'm thinking of going back to it if this new one doesn't wise up!) Seriously, $300 bucks for a brand new phone & it can't keep a proper signal?
Is it the radio? Is it the software (still 100% stock, unrooted)? Should I make them give me a new one? What if it doesn't work, either? Flashing it to fix the issue is fine for me, but I've been holding out for multi-view before I get flash-crazy. lol Not to mention I may have to return it so better to not mess with it [yet]. I'm very frustrated & tired of getting looked upon like I'm the typical woman idiot who is not as smart as her new smartphone!!! I am NOT imagining it!!!

Sounds like your antennae is shorting out or something like it wasn't soldered properly or the cable isn't secure. Would explain why WiFi affects it. I'd go there and demand a replacement and if they don't wanna budge your within 30 day no questions return. Then go to a diff store and get a new one. I really don't see it being a software issue.

Is it possible that whatever the problem was, it miraculously resolved itself? I had it drop signal two more times since this post, then nothing since. It's been working perfectly. I hate to keep it if it might arise again but I hate to return it if it was some weird fluke thing.
This may or may not be related to the above problem: has anyone noticed their reception is not as good as on a previous device? I had a Cappy and it always got great signal. I noticed this one is not as strong in the same places I previously visited with my old phone. Although admittedly, it seems to be improving. Does that even make sense or is even possible? Just like me, my phone has to be the goofball of the bunch!

Nope. I've done nothing because I'm having this returning debate. lol I'm itching to though!
This is classic "my car doesn't work so take it to the garage then it works fine and they will make fun of you" If I do return it what do I say? You spent enough money on the device, you should be absolutely happy with it, not apprehensive. If you wait past the return date, it's going to sit in the pit of your stomach for 20 months and ruin your enjoyment of it until you can upgrade again. Not worth it. Smile your brightest smile, walk into the store, very nicely tell them that you've had multiple issues and the AT&T phone reps said to go in and ask for an exchange. That's it. They're going to count on you being intimidated and going away. Smile, be nice, and don't be intimidated.
If they say you have to reproduce the problem, invite them to spend the day with you. The Note 2 is amazing and you shouldn't settle if you believe your hardware is having problems.

Yes. I have decided to take it in later today, as my 14 days is up on Friday. I hope they have stock of them. Anyhow...I have another question. If a phone is sitting still with no movement (and the weather is good, lol) will there be variations in signal strength? I get 3 bars with 4G showing, then it drops to one tiny bar. Sometimes the 4G disappears then reappears. The it will go back up to 4 bars. All in the course 5 minutes! I do realize signal will vary with movement but will it if your phone is just sitting there?
I am trying to experiment a little. I just realized/remembered that I had (uneventfully) dropped my phone (not hard, in-case) about the same time as my dropped signal problem pretty much resolved itself. So then I was like, hmm, maybe there IS something loose inside. I've tried gently shaking/jarring it here on my desk, coincidentally with the bars dropping back to just 1 as a result. But then again it may be coincidental as they are seeming to waiver A LOT. I just wondered if it is normal.
I never really stared at my old phone (Galaxy1) here at my desk but I'm almost positive it always had more than 1 bar at this same location and I never noticed it waiver like this one. But like I said I never had to make myself stare at it to check, either! lol Just wondering if someone knows a little more about cellphone signal 101 than me.
I have the issue of no 4G HSPA+ but I can get a strong LTE signal when in an LTE reception area. I'm wondering if you are in an LTE area and can get LTE? Where are you located?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
I have noticed problems with my GN2 as well. Mine shows I have signal but my data stalls or doesn't seem to work as it should. I'm in an area where there shouldn't be any problems. Only seems to happen in non LTE areas. Whenever I have LTE signal this thing is blazing fast.

Update: Took the phone in. Basically, they had never heard of the issue with this phone. But...I walked away with a replacement. So far so good though I've had it only a few hours. The girl was very nice & explained even though I was borderline limit she would take care of me. I told her I received it Fri the 9th but she said they were basing the 14 days on the 7th! I said I didn't physically have it till the 9th! Jeeze. Moot point since she was going to take care of it anyhow but it just concerned me how (corporate) att could chop 2 days of my in-store return time!
So no, I'm not in LTE land, unfortunately. 3g H+ & E only though I can't complain about the coverage or speed. Good enough for me 4 sure.
The signal bars waivered quite a bit even while in the store. They said while some fluctuation is normal it shouldn't be as much as it was doing especially with the close proximity of the tower & good weather and especially while just sitting on the counter.
I downloaded the free app "No Signal Alert" from the Play Store. In just a few hours it recorded lost signal 4 times! (In a very good coverage area) [my first phone b4 the exchange] Consider using it if you want to see if you are losing signal like I was. Handy app!
Hopefully this is a good one. I know it sounds goofy but this phone seems to even move faster than the other. Weird. It will be interesting to hear if anyone else is having this problem. Maybe there was a bad batch of them or something? Like the Nexus I read about & their signal problems.

Haha im glad that they helped ya! No its not goofy or silly to think that one phones faster then another because no two phones are alike. The silicone chips are very different and performance can very greatly. I have a similar situation with mine. LTE will be working fine but then I notice that once I connect to my home wifi and then either leave my wifi range or turn off wifi the LTE icon will show in the status bar and it will show that it's sending and receiving data but Web pages will stall and never load, Play Store will timeout, and SpeedTest.net will start up but the needle will freeze about 1/8 of the way up indefinitely. I've toggled data at this point but it never fixes it, I have to restart the phone at which point LTE works perfectly but once I get back on my wifi the cycle will repeat, this has happened reliably for about the past week.
Do you all think I have a defective radio or am I missing something? I'm still within my return Window and will probably swap it Friday.

That's exactly how it's acting for me. I just now disabled the AT&T Smart WiFi app and after a quick restart and toggle test there was no problems, but I'm not sure if the problem will only pop up after I've been on wifi for a while. I'm going to see if it keeps doing it tomorrow.

What I noticed today is that when this same issue happens, with 4G icon and wifi icon both active, it occurs after I manually check for a firmware update within the system settings. The 4G icon doesn't go away until I reset the phone.
Also I manually deleted the all the AT&T boat ware apps before this was happening so the smart wifi app is not causing this for me.

Weird, if you get the issue and don't have the Smart WiFi app then it must be something else and it was coincidence that it worked normal for me today. I've only checked for firmware once (when I first got my phone) so it must be something else causing it. I'm hoping the multi view firmware will also have a fix for it.

Okay, so I've been on Tmobile since taking the dive into the wonderful world of Android. I had the S2 for a few months and thdn after becoming infatuated I went out and got me an S3. Recently I decided to move on to Sprint as the coverage I received at work was, well, nonexistent. So, I am completely new to CDMA and my beautiful new Note 2, and after reading through the forums I've discovered that I am bout back to square one. Well, maybe not entirely, but definitely been knocked back quite a bit. Which when considering I've only been involved in the xda community for about 9 months pretty much leaves me with the feeling that I'm stuck in Paris with no map and no translator. So, I was hoping I could reach out to the wise and informed members of xda and ask a broad, but simple, question. What do I need to know so I don't F up my new mistress? I'm not asking for a tutorial on rooting or flashing, nothing generic. Just some helpful specifics. I saw somewhere that they were talking about resetting Wallet before flashing a new ROM or else it may be blocked on the phone, I guess, forever. I'm also unfamiliar with the modems and the updates yall have gotten. Etc, etc. And as I said, not looking for another, what is the benefit of rooting, what is CWM and TWRP, can I get rid of all the darned Sprint apps baloney. I was just hoping to basically just kinda do a crash course intro, a CDMA and/or L900 101 kinda thing so to speak. Any info you can offer up would be greatly appreciated!

The worst part about the android community, unfortunately, is the fragmentation of general knowledge. The rooting process for a Nexus is probably identical to a Note 2 but the names of everything and builds and versions are all different, so you have to learn new 'words' like it is a new language. Fortunately you have a great community so you just have to learn how to search for things. Check the general section for android development I think there is a sticky that has a glossory of terms that explains all the acronyms.
I've had mine for 3 months but I would still welcome a crash course as well.
Well I prefer twrp as my custom recovery. Depending on your firmware version you can root without your phone ever going to download mode. I did. I used exynos abuse to get root. Then used mobile odin to flash a new rom. Always reset google wallet if you are reseting or flashing a new rom. Its tempermental. I would stay around only the sprint veraion for now. There is a way to use roms from other note 2 variants. I believe its in the dev section. Recovery is standalone. So swirching roms doesnt change it. You cannot talk on the phone and be on the internet at the same time unless you are using wifi or 4glte. If you like to draw or doodle there is sketchbook mobile which is awesome. Btw ma7 is the most current firmware that I know of. Also you can sideload the google wallet apk with no extra work to get it working. Goodluck and read alot.

ClockWork Mod and TeamWin Recovery Project. Both have custom recovery pieces. I personally had some troubles with CWM on this phone and just use Odin now. I head TWRP works better than CWM on the Note 2, but Odin is the Tool Samsung suggests. Note that TWRP is MUCH more feature-rich than Odin. You might choose TWRP (or CWM) if you wanted to flash stuff from your SD card rather than from your PC- good for jumping around between kernels on the fly, for example.
Odin and the other two are all ways to flash stuff to your phone. That's all Odin does; the other two have lots more features.

Heck yeah! Simplest way is to root it and uninstall everything you don't like (Root App Delete from the Play Store seems to work pretty well; be sure you have a backup before you start blowing stuff away).
If you'd like to take it a step further, get a custom ROM that's been debloated; they normally require a full wipe, so bye bye sprint stuff. (Again, root it and back it up first!)

You need root to do most modifications to your phone. I find that I need root for everyday stuff too (Titanium backup, Stweaks, Root app delete, etc).

I appreciate you taking the time to go through all that, but I think maybe I didn't explain too well what I was trying to get. I wasn't asking for the general info, just things specific to CDMA and the L900. Like what was replying about. Not trying to be a jerk, but I know there's already a thousand threads on recoverys, ROMs, and rooting. Just didn't wanna do anything to my phone that would be irreversible (i.e. The resetting Google Wallet thing) or something that would cause signal issues (I read stuff on flashing certain ROMs on certain modems may create issues). Stuff like that. Like I said though appreciate the time you took, and any info you may have like that would certainly be appreciated.

Oh I forgot. If you are on ljc expect to not go back to it if you update to ma7. For some reason lots of people have had trouble going back. It would cause slot of problems. Ma7 is just fine for me though. Great battery life and what not. I would say do the update. If you are going custom rom and are currently unrooted just do the ota. Or there is a firmware file around here to flash. I updated firmware before going to ma7. Although I was already rooted using exynos abuse. Ma7 eliminates the exploit. So be prepared to do that before going to ma7. If there is anything I am missing that you still need answers to or don't understand just ask. Its also a good habit to update profile and prl when switching roms or modems.

I picked up something along those lines from reading around. It took all of 15 minutes out of the box before I got all rooted with new ROMs being flashed after playing around on stock just to get a baseline with all the ROM hoping that was sure to follow. Needless to say I didn't read up on anything modem wise before doing all this as I, admittedly, jumped the gun a little (I was just so excited to have a whole new community with new dev teams and all these foreign ROMs to explore). I used Max's trusty galaxynote2root site to root (love that guy). And used the GalaxyNote2RootSprint.zip to obtain root. Then, went straight into the original development section and immediately flashed the absolutely amazing Liquid Smooth. Now I should say, I did receive a message saying the was an update to the phone through sprint and I did proceed with the OTA while dling the zip and giving root instructions a quick once over. So, I'm guessing that took care of going to ma7 for me? Cuz I'm definitely using the ma7 modem. Now I did leave my beloved aosp as I did want to see if I would actually use all the S pen features that aosp sadly doesn't offer us. I jumped around from Whapasaurous to Venom Ice a d finally to Macks All Star, but I'm assuming that unless it's totally different from GSM that flashing a new ROM has no effect on your modem (but by all means correct me if I'm wrong). So just wanna make sure I went about things the right way here.
P. S. I did use the zip to revert the sd cards file format when returning from aosp so I didn't have to deal with all that "0" and "legacy" nonsense.
Thanks again!

P.P.S. I don't really seem to have any data issues so I'm guessing all is well, but I am having an issue where my wifi keeps turning itself on, like multiple times a day. I thought at first I may have been accidently hitting it, but upon further review, nope, not me. Sounds more like a ROM issue to me though, but as it seems like it may pertain I figured I'd bring it up

I think you should have stayed with Tmobile and there 70 dollar unlimited because in a few months to a year you would have had lte and hspa+42 &21 as a fall back before you went to slow data. Im making the jump slowly but surely. My wife is getting the S4 on Tmobile and when the note3 comes out ill be going as well im sick of cdma amd the slow data when there is no LTE

I really only made the move due to the fact that T-mobile is the only service provider that gets absolutely no coverage inside my work, and, unfortunately, I work 12 hour days, 4-5 days a week. So, being as my contract was up, I didn't wanna sign up for 2 more years with lte "coming soon." I know you all with Sprint know how that has the possibility of turning out. Plus, just because they were getting lte doesn't mean I'm going to see any improvement at work. Now I'm getting consistent 3g inside work and I'm loving it. Actually typing this inside, infamously, the worst service area in the entire building and still getting an almost constant connection. Occasionally I am getting 4g, not often, but it's happened. Playing around with modems tonight though. Did end up trying LJC after being on MA7,no problems so far, actually seeing improvement. Thanks for the heads up on the Sprint Connection Optimizer, gonna check that out now. Super annoying, especially as I do work 12 hour shifts and with wifi turning randomly on, don't wanna look to see my battery down to nada. That's just the kinda info I was hoping to get here, thanks again!

Yeah the wifi thing Will kill your battery. Sprint is not as bad as everyone thinks and says I have great LTE in 90% of where I go. I'm thinking of going to T-Mobile because I'm sick of cdma devices we are always are considered last ro none over GSM. If sprint keeps up the good work with the LtE and 3g ill be saying. Glad you hot it figured out for rh the most part.
