Problem Backup CWM - Samsung Captivate Glide

Ok, i have a problem, i make a bakcup of my rom (Lite rom 0.9), the backup doesnt show any problem when i did, but, when i try to restore, the phone stay in black after boot animation, i try to wipe cache, dalvik, reinstall the rom then backup and nothing, i cant restore my backup. Somebody know how to solve? or i lost my backup?

I had this with my back flip. If you backup with a custom boot animation, then the backup won't work.
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app

so, there is no way to recover the backup? (i will loss a lot of savedata of my games haha )

I have successfully restored loads of backups of LiteRom0.9. What version of cwm are you using?
I have always used the tar backup style instead of blob. I don't think that would make the difference, but it's worth a shot.
Sent form my SGH-i927 running dman's cm10.1

I use the touch version of CWM, when i made the backup, there was no problem, but i cant restore, i try a lot of time, but never boot

Ok, are you using tar or blob for the backup format? What do you mean by "won't boot?" Does it freeze at the samsung logo, before that? Or whatever boot animation it has?
When you use cmwr to restore from backup, what does it say? Does it think it worked properly? If you want, you can attach you backup folder (you can use "adb pull /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/whatever" or something of the sort to pull the folder from your device) and I'll see if there are any problem with the backup itself.
Also, bear in mind that cwm doesn't have official support for the glide. And from what I've read, the touch port isn't that reliable, you might want to try to flash it again/the non-touch version.
Sent form my SGH-i927 running dman's cm10.1

Its restore without errors, but stays a lot of time in the boot animation and then the screen turns black. I dont know too much, i only go to bakcup and resotre an do the backup, and restore from there. i dont change anything

Hmmm... OH!!! I can't believe I didn't think of this!
Try wiping your cache, sometimes wierdness happens with that. Just to get your phone working again, you might also want to try a full wipe. That won't delete your backups, so hopefully we can still recover the data, but that might get your phone working again for the time being.
This might help me determine if the backup is somehow corrupt:
1) boot into recover
2) under "mounts and storage", mount either your internal or external sd.
3) ensure your phone is plugged into your computer and type "adb shell"
4) type "cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backups"
5) type "ls" That will show all folders in the current directory.
6) the folders are named based of the time and date the backup was created, choose one the type "cd [whichever folder you want]"
7) type "ls" and tell me what it outputs. It might have somehow taken a corrupted image.
Sent form my SGH-i927 running dman's cm10.1

ok, will try that, i already reinstall the rom and install the app, but, i has alot of data from every app (games, settings, etc) that take time to put again, so i want to recover the backup, and i like to try other roms, so i will need to go back with my backups and if not work, will be a problem for me.
i try that, but give me a error, device not found

Your phone was in recovery and it said that? Hmmm....
Ok, go into settings on your phone in normal boot and make sure usb debugging is turned on. You once you've done that, you can actually do the same proccess but starting on step 3.

edit: ok, i see a problem, i turned on usb debugging, but when i leave the settins its turn off. it seems that dont turn on :/

Still not luck, after a while, the debuggin options stay turned on, butstill cant connect with adb shell

Do you have the proper drivers installed? If you do, try uninstalling then reinstalling them.
Sent form my SGH-i927 running dman's cm10.1

are the same used in odin?

had the exact same problem using .9 lite rom n touch recovery, updated to latest non touch recovery everythings fine now

I was thinking that might be the case, but I hadn't heard about that problem with the touch version. I haven't had any significant problems with the nontouch version.
Sent form my SGH-i927 running dman's cm10.1

the problem is that i cant take the risk to use odin, my phone freeze a lot in the past when i flash the recovery and cost a lot of time to flash without a problem. That why i say that the rogers version has something different.

Well now... that could be a problem. Try to upload a zipped version of you cwmr backup folder. We'll see what we can do.

The bakcup folder have 1.6gb :/ that can take a lot, dont know why is too big

[Q] Clockworkmod Recovery

I flashed 6.1.1 of ARHD, enjoying it now . Is it that after you flash it, it will override CWM recovery and give you back the old white bootloader, or am I doing something wrong. I have Eng S-OFF and Radio S-OFF, so I flashed both the radio and the rom. Thanks in advance.
I don't thing you should get either back. Im not sure on this one.
Or maybe I should phase it in this way. Should I redownload Rom Manager to get back CWM Recovery after I flash ARHD and its recommended Radio?
The superwipe script for ARHD flashes 4Ext recovery. Theres not too much difference between Clockwork Mod Recovery and 4Ext as far as i can see. But im not looking too hard lol. If you want Clockwork Mod back you will have to install Rom Manager again and reflash the recovery. But do you really need clockwork mod and is it really worth the effort?
Edit:Oh youre not doing anything wrong. Just use vol + and - to navigate to recovery option in bootloader and it will take you to 4Ext recovery
the boot loader remains. its from there you have to select recovery ,and if you have flashed arhd then you now have 4ext as you recovery and there is no need for you to get clockwork mod back as 4ext does the same job and kinda works the same way too in terms of navigating through the options
Thanks guys for the help. I found it already.. Guess it was called clockworkmod RECOVERY for a reason.. So if I want to flash a battery (framework) mod, and they say use CWM, I just need to use 4xt instead?
Edit: if I flashed the radio before the rom, will it be wiped due to the full wipe script.
Sent from my ARHD powered, HTC Desire HD
Yes use text instead it does the samething . I'm not sure if Flashing New radio will remove battery framework mod

No the radio will not be affected. However make sure the Rom contains the matching ril. Otherwise you will have to flash the correct ril.

Thanks for all your help, guys. This is a great forum!
I guess I will stick to my current theme.. I'm scared that I might brick my device.
By my reckoning, your more likely to brick your DHD during the rooting process than flashing a new Rom. I'm changing my Rom daily at the moment trying to find my favorite and I've had no trouble at all

Maybe tonight I should try flashing a theme. Changing roms is irritating in a way that I have to backup and restore my contacts again, and I haven't got the hang of using TB.

Someone feel free to chime in, but I dont think TB backs up your contacts. If it does, it hasnt been for me. Anyways, just get a contacts backup app off the market. SMS&Contacts Backup works well for me. I dont use the SMS part of it though. although there are plenty of others available.

I just realised that you could use the Backup options in People App, if you just want to keep the contacts.
Just flashed a none compatible lockring yesterday, luckily I had my backup of the rom done haha...

You should probably create a new thread here, as this does not attract answers for your question as this is about CWM Good luck though, this 6.1.1 I flashed from stock, so I cannot help you .

How do you restore that APK? I restored my backup when I had the same problem as you, just to realise that that backup was the one I made, when I first flashed the ROM. Then I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

assuming you made a backup of the apk itself, its pretty easy.
what i did was boot the phone up normally (I sincerely hope you have USB Debugging enabled before you altered that file...), opened a command prompt then i did the following:
Code:
adb devices (make sure my phone is being recognized by adb, if it is, it'll show
"List of devices attached" and then show the s/n of your phone, if not,
it'll show "List of devices attached" and then be blank)
cd c:\droid (this is where i had the backup of Idlescreen_base.apk so i dont
have to type the full directory when i push)
adb remount /system (mounts /system so i can mess around in there)
adb push Idlescreen_base.apk /system/app
adb reboot
when i did it, i didnt know about the reboot command, so i did a battery pull. you asking me how i did it made me dig around a little bit because i couldnt remember exactly how i did it, i could've SWORN i did it from either hboot or fastboot, but when i tried just now to send a txt file to /system i couldnt get the phone to even be recognized by adb. I'm glad i verified everything i did instead of just start rattling it all off, because it would've been wrong as hell lol. hope this helps you out, any questions, just ask

OMG, you deserve many thanks for that man! The problem, is, how do I know which .apk I have to backup. Do I open the Flashable zip to check everything inside, then backup all the apks in my phone. And which apps to you use to backup? You used a file manager to navigate in your phone then copy the files to the memory card then to your PC?

thats exactly what I did.
I was trying to remove the icons from the lock screen, and that only required me to mess with one file, Idlescreen_base.apk i'm not sure what file the lock ring is in, maybe ask one of the themers?
EDIT: downloaded a random lockring zip, looks like the only apk's it flashes are Idlescreen_base.apk and fusion.apk (thats the 2.3.3 lockrings), the 2.3.4 lockrings only flash fusion.apk which are both located in /system/app
alternatively, why dont you just download a compatible lockring and flash it? that SHOULD fix your problem as well. What version of GB are you running? also, lets take this to PM, we're WAY off topic right now

Be Warned: Nandroid backup can cause bootloop

Just a friendly reminder that Nandroid alone are not sufficient for data protection. Your /sdcard partition is not a safe place.
Last night an update came out for the ROM I'm on so I decided like we all should to do a Nandroid backup before flashing.
Well..
Backup errors out on /data and after that (with no other changes, just the attempted backup) My phone is bootlooping at the Google logo.
I cleared cache and dalvik...no change. Did a factory reset within recovery and reflashed the version of the ROM i was already on, no changes.
Tried to restore an older nandroid backup...restore fails on /data.
Used fasboot and reflashed, bootloader, radio...nope still bootloop.
Final Fix:
Open up stock 4.0.1 firmware package and fastboot flash boot, system, userdata which then booted up fine on stock 4.0.1 android. I then proceeded to flash the ROM, etc and all is fine. However flashing those images did wipe my /sdcard partition so I lost everything on there.
Thanks for the heads up

Not to be an ass, and I really do feel for you, but you know what you signed up for when you unlocked. There is always that chance and to avoid it all stay unrooted.
But, again, thanks for the heads up and I hope there wasn't too much on your SD.
Same happens to me, in my older phone it was stuck in the boot up screen spent weeks trying to fix it nun worked, so I had to save up money to buy a new one
But on a lighter note I restored back to custom rom now SIM card don't work but o well, that's y I like to do it to figure out the problems

Ouch! Good thing it's not a common reoccurring problem.
sucks, but you could unmount sdcard from recovery and transfer all of your stuff to your pc, and then fastboot flash 4.0.1
@OP did you happen to reneme the back-ups at all with spaces?
good day.
To address a few people.
-I have nothing on my phone that is important so as far as 'you know the risks' yes I do and I never said I cared that this happened in any big way but it was a little scary that it wouldn't even restore a nandroid. It happened late last night and after fiddling with it for 10 minutes I just turned it off and then hooked it up to my computer @work this morning and within 45 minutes had everything working again and setup exactly like I did before.
-No I did not rename my backups lol.
[email protected] I didn't know that thanks for the tip, all I really had on /sdcard was some wallpapers and a few ROM downloads. I keep my phone pretty lean since I'm abit of a flashing whore.
-This thread is more of a heads up for people, as you could search I never posted any kind of thread asking for help, the fix was pretty simple, really just a matter of going down the list of least 'destructive' fixes and trying those out before trying out those that involved wiping the entire phone. Its not like it was bricked I had recovery and boot-loader access. It's just strange that it happened I mean doing a backup is not making writes to the system its simple a read operation and then writes to the /sdcard partition.
FWIW I was using CWM Touch Beta5 from Nathan Grebowiec.

Just a little note: the /sdcard "partition" is actually just a symlink to /data/media. So, if you flash the userdata partition, you are effectively wiping you sdcard.
If you booted CWM, then used ADB to pull all the data from /data/media, you would still have everything on you /sdcard.

Is the rest of the data partition unavailable when the sdcard folder is mounted?
i've used nandroid backup over 200 times between my 4 android devices. i have NEVER ever had an issue like this.
and just the last week i've done 15 backups and recoveries on my gnex. no issues.
Hi, happend to me exactly same thing... twice. And trying to flash other Rom was causing strange behavior, there was no lock screen phone go straight to home screen after pressing power button. Flashing stock image fix the problem, I can only add that if you backup your nandroids buckup(s) and then put it back to your phone (after stock flash) they will work fine. Sorry for my terrible english.

Nandroid has become considerably less reliable since Koush switched to tar.
Ugh, just had this same thing happen to me when trying to flash a rom. If I had known this before I wouldn't flash anything anymore and count on nandroids. lol Oh well, you live and learn. So I've never flashed a stock img through fastboot or anything so I'm going to try that when I get home. I tried to mount my sd card here at work with no drivers and got this error when trying to mount usb 'unable to open ums lunfile no such directory blah blah' I'm assuming it's just because I'm on a computer with no drivers.
Anyway, so if I can get my phone to usb mount to my laptop through cwm I can back up my sd card on the laptop before I flash the stock images that will wipe my sd? I do have some pictures and things on there I would like to keep if possible. Thanks. Wish I read this earlier, 30 minutes too late lol
Anyone know what causes this?

Problems with cwm after installing paranoid android rom

Ok so I have kind of a strange problem and i dont think its with cwm. I always make nandroid backups before flashing new roms as a precaution but in this case it did no good I recently installed Paranoid Android on my phone to try out Jelly Bean. It is pretty awesome But it is a little buggy with a few of the apps i like to run (rom toolbox and dropbox being the major ones). After restoring all my apps i decided to restore my messaging data. That caused the rom to not boot past the google screen. So I decided to go back to Black Ice AOKP with my backup. Didnt work, gave me the "error while restoring /data!". I also just recently updated to CWM Touch 6.0.0.5. I also tried an earlier backup with the same problem. I decided to use fastboot to flash a different CWM (5.8.*.* touch and regular) and basically has the same issue just a different response (could not find data.img, cache.img, and boot.img). Because i use Titanium backup anyway i decided to just wipe and flash Black Ice but when i do it boots for about 30 seconds and then the phone restarts. I tried this multiple times doing multiple formats to no avail. Just for sh*ts i decided to try to wipe and reinstall Paranoid Android. IT BOOTED!! But the weird thing is is that all my apps were still there including my messaging data that borked the install to begin with :/ Anyway to make a long story short, my phone is now working but im afraid that i can't restore my backup or even install a new rom without issues. It seems that CWM will not properly wipe my phone anymore. I am wondering what this new rom could have installed that would cause these issues? I didnt flash any new radios or bootloaders so i dont think that is an issue. Please help!! lol I would like to go back until this rom gets further development or AOKP goes to JB. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for your time
-Erik
I really don't think the ROM caused your recovery to not work correctly. Have you tried a different recovery, like TWRP?
Oh, and any problems you're having with apps on Paranoid can be easily fixed by changing what mode they display in via Paranoid Settings.
shode, ndomeopu
Thanks For The Quick Replies! My Swype Has Decided Too Capitalize Every Word And I'm Not Going Too Fix It Lol.. Anyway I've Tried Changing Modes With Rom ToolboxAnd It Made No Difference. i Will Try With Drop Box. It Seems Like Maybe This New Rom Messed With The Permissions And That's Why i Can't Properly Format? The Thing Is Is That CWM Worked Fine Before Booting This Rom. And i definitely Understand That My Conclusions Don't Make Sense But Neither Does The Problem Lol. i Guess What My Question Is Is Why Do The Previous Versions Off cwm That Worked Before Not Work Now? i Will Give The Other Recovery a Shot And Let You Know But i Prefer cwm Just Because It's What i Know And Had Always Worked... Until Now Of Course. Also i Don't Consider Myself anewbie At Thus Stuff But i Am Definitely No dev Lol. Any Suggestion Is Welcome. Thanks!

Silly Me For Not Thinking Of Changing The Settings. dropBox Now Works But My Swype Is Still Messed Up
Swype works fine for me at 320 dpi and phone mode. Which is the Gnex's default settings so if an app gives you issues try those settings. I'm not too sure about CWM, it's been a while since I've used it. If you want to try TWRP the easiest way is to just install Goo Manager and go to Flash ROMs and in the additional options select Flash Open Recovery Script.
well swype in general worked.. maybe its just my browser. Anyway I installed TWRP, makes me wonder why I wanted to keep CWM It worked.. im back to the old rom. Quick question.. does it save the backups to /sdcard like CWM? I thought it said it backed up to /data/media which means if i completely wipe /data ill lose my backups. Also does this mean I dont have as much space for backups? Thanks for your help.

/sdcard and /data/media are the same thing. I'm sure there's a better technical explanation but I think it's symlinked or something. So wiping data or factory reset in recovery will not wipe your SD contents. From within the ROM it might.

I majorly messed up my phone. Need urgent help!

Prior to receiving my GS2 from T-Mobile I did research on how to Root, Flash ROMs, you know, all the cool things Android phones can do, and I mean A LOT of research. When I finally did recieve my phone the first thing I did was root it, which worked flawlessly - at which point I thought "Hey, this isn't so hard I won't have any problems at all!" OH BOY WAS I WRONG.
Here's where everything went wrong: The first ROM I thought I'd install was AOKP Milestone and then I'd try CM10, so I put both .Zip files into my SD card. I backed up to Titanium Backup and to my External SD card through Clockwork mod then I installed AOKP Milestone and made it to the home screen with some force close messages. It was running, but didn't look very stable to me and the whole "Swagger" thing turned me off to it. I went back to Clockwork Mod and the website that I got CM10 from also told me to run DarkSide Wipe before installing the ROM so I did just that. Ran Darkside, installed CM10, then installed Gapps. I then rebooted my phone and CM10 started to load up, but after 10 minutes of just the splash screen I assumed it was stuck in a bootloop. I then restored the backup I made before installing Milestone, but I remember there being an error and it not being successful. It was at this point that Clockwork Mod started being buggy. Starting to panic, I tried a factory reset through CWM. It formatted data no problem, but it would hang at "formatting /cache" until I turned off the phone. So I panicked some more and formatted system, emmc, data. (Not a smart idea, I know.) but it would hang when I tried formatting the cache again. And its been stuck in a bootloop ever since.
I read somewhere that you could use Odin to revert your phone to make it completely stock by flashing a kernel. I thought my prayers were answered! I was finally going to just start over and forget this ever happened! No. My computer won't even recognize my phone is plugged into it. (Yes, I have all drivers up to date. Yes, I am using Samsung Micro USB, and Yes, I have Keis installed.) Since my computer won't recognize my Phone, Odin won't.
* I can access Clockwork mod, and Download mode, but my computer won't recognize my phone when plugged in.*
I know it's a lot to read but I have tried so many things I'm just so discouraged about this whole thing. I know I'm a noob so please explain your answers like I'm 5. I don't understand most Android modding slang.
Thank you.

If you have an external sd card, load a rom on to it from your computer and then get your phone into recovery mode and choose to install from external sd card. See if that works. Also sometimes a cache wipe can take a while. Also don't panic and start doing things you know nothing about. I would recommend and ice based rom then figure how to get twrp recovery then move on to cm10. . If you can get past this, I can help you. Pm me

EDIT: The funny thing is, when my phone is in CWM my computer recognizes it and I can mount USB storage, but won't recognize it while in download mode. Weird.
don't use superwipe with cwm 6+. it will break your recovery and cause a bootloop.
also it seems that a lot of people have problems with cwm 6.0.1.9 and it seems like it doesn't wipe properly so i would recommend latest twrp or sk8terwitskil's cwm. i think that's what happened with aokp and why you were having so much fcs.

Yes, that is what I was referring to here:
I read somewhere that you could use Odin to revert your phone to make it completely stock by flashing a kernel. I thought my prayers were answered! I was finally going to just start over and forget this ever happened! No. My computer won't even recognize my phone is plugged into it. (Yes, I have all drivers up to date. Yes, I am using Samsung Micro USB, and Yes, I have Keis installed.) Since my computer won't recognize my Phone, Odin won't.

Battery pull didn't work either. :/
UPDATE: I've tried installing 3 different ICS ROMs from the external SD via CWM but they all seem to freeze 3/4 through the install. After about 5 mins of being frozen the phone reboots and the bootloop just comes back. Once again I have nowhere to go. I'm lost.
If anyone has more suggestions, please share!
i don't know where i read it but i just remember now that someone said kies and odin are incompatible. so maybe that's why odin couldn't detect your phone? kies might have been running in the bg.
so i would uninstall kies and driver. restart comp. then download and install just the driver from samsung website. then put the phone into download mode and connect to pc. see if that will help.
if not, i don't know lol. usually i would suggest flashing to twrp but i don't know how well that's gonna go over a broken recovery.
I would suggest flashing TWRP recovery 2.3.3 and try and flash a ROM again after....CWM has gone downhill in my opinion.
Here is the TWRP thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768742
Or download GooManager app and install that way
And do not use any cache wipe scripts with this.

You need to have computer install odin driver while you're in download mode before odin works. Try this wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe data/factory reset, format system, format cache and format system. Then flash new rom in recovery.

RESOLVED!
Funny thing is, I just plugged in my phone to a computer running Windows 7 and Odin recognized it! I guess my XP at home doesn't like phones. From there I flashed a stock kernel and VIOLA! Phone is out of the box new! Now I'm very weary about installing a ROM again.. I don't want to go through that ever again. Maybe i'll do some more research before I molest the software's insides.
Thank you everyone for your contributions!
Try recovery from sk8erwitskil, it's the only one that seems to work w/ my Hercules. I had similar problems to what you were experiencing and it's the only recovery that worked for some reason. I am on a GNex now so take that for what it's worth. I'll pull out the Herc. tonight when I get home to update to the CM10 latest nightly, it's been a while.

[Q] TWRP Recovery Will Not Flash or Restore

I really hate to start a new thread but I really can't find a reason/solution to this issue. It's just as the title says. I tried flashing the MIUI ROM just as any ROM and got a failed error. Then went to do my nandroid restore and it just hangs on the splash screen (boot screen). Anyway I thought there could be a bad download so I took out the SD and redownloaded synergy on my laptop, then put it back in the phone and nothing but the nandroid should let me restore. I even tried moving the files to the internal SD and nothing. The only thing I can think of is to Odin back to stock? Is it the same method as rooting? I'm sure I can find that out, but I'm just confused why it seems TWRP doesn't want to work. Thanks for any help, it's 4 a.m. here and I'm dog tired.
Are you on the latest TWRP?
If all else fails you could go back to stock and root again.

Can I just reflash recovery from the state I'm in, or do I still need to unroot? I've moved some of my files to the ext SD within recovery but some things won't move and I really don't want to wipe it.

Try wiping everything 3X, then go to the reboot menu, and reboot system, wipe both the cache and dalvik cache and try to restore.

Do you mean reboot recovery? I can't reboot system. Sorry, not trying to split hairs, just trying to be specific.
Odin back to stock seems like the best option.

are you able to flash a different rom, say a stock rom? It's possible you got a corrupted TWRP download.
Since they just released another update 2.4.3, you might want to try and download the zip file, wipe cashe and davick (may want to do it three times). Reboot back into TWRP 2.4.3 and see if it gives you some better luck.
I've had Nandroid backup that didn't work for whatever reason. I didn't test it prior to needing it, and got burned. It just wouldn't show up in the restore menu.
On a side note, what error did you get when you tried flashing MIUI?
Try rebooting recovery when you are in recovery already once before flashing/restoring anything anything.

I tried multiple ROMs, but not a stock one. Hmm, I was on 2.3.2.3. I did'nt get a special error, just said a red message saying failed.

Tried that. Did'nt work.

no, i meant reboot system, the recovery will warm you that there is no os installed but go fourth with it, it will turn off and reboot back to recovery. at that point in time, wipe cashe/dalvik cache and try to install.

Ok, I was'nt sure. I just went back to stock. I just wanted to know what exactly was going on and why.
The only thing different on my phone is I got a 32 gig SD card. I transfed some of my files a couple days before doing anything of this. That's the only thing I can think of. Even after root/unroot it STILL won't do my nandroid restore. I had so much time and work into the apps I set up, games, ect. Really freakin sucks. I even went into the the TWRP backup folder and made sure the backup files were there before doing anything. I never even got to flash many ROMs, I kinda just stayed on Jellybomb.
I had the uTorrent app installed and I noticed that it changed a lot of files with the "u" in front that the uTorrent app has. Anyone know why that is?

This is what it did to a lot of my files. But not the ones I tried to flash.
