[Q] How to install kernel on galaxy S3 sprint - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Can someone explain how to install custom kernel want to instal Ktoonz Kernel running free gs3 rom V 2.O can it be installed via Aroma installer.

Don't know. But you have not searched at all .....
You can install it by downliading the zip file then going into recovery and flashing it. Then wipe cache dalvik and fix permissions then reboot and you are done .

I have searched and unable to find any definitive tutorials for ktoonz or GS3. I have tried to flash kernel end up with continual bootloop.
1st root
2nd kernel
3rd rom
Kernel can not be installed after rom has been installed.
Tutorials are showing tar files I have a CWM zip file, I'm assuming kernel before rom.

Step 1: Boot Into Recovery
Step 2: Make a Backup
Step 3: Flash This http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1319515&d=1347395869
Step 4: Flash the Kernel. I recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800576
(Note: Make sure you get the one for TouchWiz if you are running a stock based ROM or AOSP if you are running an AOSP ROM.)
Step 4: Wipe Cache and Dalvik
Step 5:Reboot
Step 6: Be Happy

If I flash a kernel it's usually after the Rom.
Think about it your going to flash a custom kernel, then flash a Rom (most come with a preinstalled kernel). That'll over write your custom kernel.
Like its been said make sure your doing tw to tw and aosp to aosp.

You have things a bit mixed up. If you are doing a ROM and Kernel the ROM should go first.
From your Custom Recovery (rooted phone with Clockwork Mod recovery or TWRP)
Flash the ROM
Then the Kernel
Make sure to always clear both Dalvik-Cache and Cache after a ROM or Kernel flash
Then restart
When clearing the Dalvik-Cache and Cache your phone will take extra time on the first boot, and on my Sprint TW SGS3 4.1.1 Stock+Root it says "optimizing Apps" on the first reboot after having the Caches cleared.
Big thing you had mixed up was flashing the ROM after the kernel.. That will just overwrite the Kernel you wanted to do *Grin*..
As others mentioned, make sure you Keep TW (TouchWiz) with TW, and AOSP (AOKP) with AOSP (CM10/10.1) for the ROM and Kernel's to match or you will have issues (boot loops, random crashes, and other mixed results).
I'm using ktoonz kernel right now, was using AGAT kernel prior, both have been very nice.
Happy Flashing

Frre GS3 is TW JB rom. I was asking when to flash beacause I did flash after rom. Do I have to flash immediately after ROM is installed??? Trying it now will report back results thanks to all for thei input

No, you don't have to install the custom kernel right after flashing the ROM, you _could_ flash FreeGS3 v2 (for example), and run it for a while and then reboot into recovery whenever you feel like trying a different kernel and flash say AGAT kernel, wipe the Dalvik-Cache and Cache, then restart to give the new kernel a try.
Fun times!

Finally it worked dont know what I was doing wrong??? But thanks to all

Note: The rom cleaner on this thread works on the verizon GS3 with the model number SCH-I535

[Question] About franco.Kernel Flashing

I have been using franco.Kernels and currently in settings and about phone it list my kernel version as 13.1 but I have flashed 14 then 14.1 then 14.2 and now 14.3
but in about phone its still not updating the kernel version label? still says #13.1
What I do to flash the kernel is Reboot the phone in CWM 5.5.0.4,
I then clear cache/ and dalvik* cache and then go to install zip from SDcard, I select the new kernel zip that I uploaded to my phone and select Yes to flash, it does its script and says successful. I then go back and reboot phone and it boots up fine but then still the problem with it not updating in phone information.
Im using Bugless Beast Rom.
My question is am I doing this wrong or is he not updating the label on each new release. Im not sure if its taking the new kernel or not?
Flash kernel
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Reboot
Did that and still says Kernel Version: 3.0.16-franco.Kernel-nightly-13.1 [email protected] #8
Sounds like you've not downloaded the latest one in that case as mine shows #14.3
I open my phone up on my computer and delete old one and cut and paste?? I will try and put it in another folder and try again.
Uhg,
Open phone on computer, Delete old kernel, Made new folder called kernels, Downloaded newest kernel from http://androtransfer.com/franciscofr...alaxy Nexus/ copied it to kernels folder. reboot into recovery, installed the zip, cleared cache, cleared dalvik, reboot back into phone, checked phone info.. still the same :'(
My version of Bugless Beast is build date jan 18th
Ok so I flashed a new version of the Bugless Beast rom today and the new #15 kernel from fransco
Flashed BBrom.zip then flashed the new kernel.zip then wiped cache and wiped dalvik. Booted up with the new kernel fine. and phone information actually shows the new #15 kernel installed.
Now I just did a flash of the #15.1 kernel and did not update the phone information again ...
I did flash new 15.1Kernel.zip then wipe cache and then wipe dalvik, boot back into phone and phone information does not show 15.1 still shows #15.
I got to be doing something wrong?
most likely bugless beast is not compatible with franco's kernel? try different ROM. if other ROMS work, its a bugless beast issue.

Franco's kernels run perfectly fine with Bugless Beast. I'm running BB and Franco's 15.1 kernel with no compatibility or flashing issues. See my screenshot.

Just an update the issue was that the cache on My browser or computer was just giving me the same version every time I would download the new version. I downloaded with my phone instead of the computer and flashed it and it worked ....

[Q] How do you center the status bar clock?

Hi All,
Please forgive me if this has been answered somewhere before but... I have seen some pics in the Themes area of people with their small "status bar clock" centered on the screen as opposed to it being beside the battery (much like Ive seen on MIUI) and Im wondering how you do this?
Do you need a specific ROM/ is it ROM dependent? Can it be done on the stock ROM?
Please advise and thanks in advance...
it's in AOKP.
Cannot be done on stock ROM.

It's a custom ROM, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402341
Refer to stickied posts to get started.
1. Download ROM, Gapps, Kernel (if desired) and put it on your phone.
2. Unlock Bootloader
3. Flash Clockwork Recovery
4. Flash ROM, Gapps, Kernel
5. reboot.
And yes various ROMs will include that toggle.

yes you just need to unlock bootloader and flash clockwork recovery after doing those 2 you'll need to flash the ROMs
make sure to wipe factory settings, cache, dalvik before flashing ROM, gapps, kernel (optional but highly recommended)

What is optional but recommended? Wiping or installing gapps and kernel? Also... I just took a peek at the download page for the AOKP ROM and it says something about matching the MD5SUM of the ROM and the GAPPS but I dont see any matching numbers... How does that work exactly?

Optional but recommended: Kernel.
Download links w/ MD5: https://sites.google.com/site/androidopenkangproject/downloads-1/downloads
Verify MD5: google hashtab (after installing, right click the file you wish to verify -> properties -> hashes -> select md5 -> verify it with the one on the site).
if you have a file you dl'd and it doesn't match the md5 hash, redownload it (select a different mirror)

Thanks and yes... It has helped me. I have now rooted and flashed CWM onto my device using the wugfresh method (many thanks to wugfresh for his program) and I have thanked you here for your help.

Trying to root Epic 4G Touch with CWM (NO ROGUE)

Hey guys. I have a friend that has an Epic 4G Touch and we're trying to get him set up with this ROM and it says that Rogue Recovery should not be used.
However, I have a few questions. First of all, where can you find a non-Rogue recovery (CWM only) for EL26? I have scoured the internet looking.
Second, what's the difference between CWM Rogue and just plain CWM? Is there one?
If it helps, we have an unrooted E4GT with EL26. (I have a Desire HD so I'm unfamiliar with all this complicated Odin stuff.)
Thanks so much in advance for your help. You guys are awesome!

Umm in that thread you linked to, at the very beginning of the Install Instructions there is a live link to the EL26 with cwm recovery.
Usually these threads include files/links to everything you need but you need to read them thoroughly from top to bottom, read the follow up comments and then re-read the OP before you even dream of installing a custom ROM you are unfamiliar with. Also if you have questions ask them before you flash, not after you've borked your phone. Usually it's best to ask questions about a ROM in the thread for the ROM or look in the general forum to see if there is a discussion thread for it, and there is one for AOKP.

Good luck and happy flashing!

1. There is none, that was the last official CWM recovery made for this phone
2. Rogue recovery had gingerbread source code so flashing between and GB roms was easy...ICS source code hasn't been released since there isn't an official build yet
If you're going to flash a stock based rom, the recovery doesn't matter as much. However anything AOKP/AOSP should always be done from el26 until TCP releases his source kernel.

Wow...that's embarrassing. I guess I should have taken a closer look.
And I actually can't post on the development threads just yet. That's why I posted here in the Q&A threads.
In any case, thanks so much for your help! It is much appreciated.
What if I have EL29? Can I still use the EL26 kernel?
Okay, a bit of an oversight on my part. The phone is completely updated so it has EL 29. Can I still flash the EL26 kernel with CWM without problems? I would assume yes, but I don't want any problems.

As long as you flash the kernel you need for the ROM u want, ur fine. For example, if you are on AOKP there is an fd26 kernel made just for it....after you load the ROM, you clear cache and dalvik then flash the kernel and boot.
If you want to flash any add-ons, you go back to el26 via Odin and flash; just ensure you flash a kernel with the same process as above before reboot (wipe cache/dalvik, kernel, reboot).
Link for AOSP/AOKP kernels is below

@MoHi96...See my last post, same thing really. Kernel el26 should be used to flash, once ready to run your ROM your kernel should be flashed last to support it. GB kernels will not support Android 4.0 and up.

I assume this should all be done in CWM with this order, for example: Flash Milestone 5. Wipe then choose the EL26 kernel and flash?

[HELP] SPH-D710VMUB Stock (Rooted) (FJ12) to Dirty Unicorns 4.2

As the tile says, I need some help, possibly a walkthrough tutorial, on how to get from rooted stock FJ12 to Dirty Unicorns 4.2 ROM on my SPH-D710VMUB (Virgin Mobile). I had it running fine at one point and then things got screwed up after I updated to 4.3 and tried making to modifications to fix some issues I was having, so I had to revert back to rooted stock. And now, for the life of me I cannot remember how I got there. Any new ROM I attempt to install via recovery throws an error (error 7 if I recall correctly) and will not install.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you mean DU 4.3..
Make sure first you're on an ICS modem...if not. Flash it in recovery on the tw ROM you're on now so you can update prl/profile..If you need a cwm recovery for the stock ROM you're on..Look in rwilco12 repo for a custom kernel with cwm for you're build..
This is how I flashed it..
Boot to cwm on current ROM...
Wipe data, cache, dalvik cache and format system
Flash DU 4.3...wait
When it's done...Don't Reboot..Go to advanced and pick reboot recovery
When new recovery comes up....do the wipes again
Now flash DU 4.3 again
Reboot when its done..
Let it settle for a few ...
Boot to cwm
Flash gapps...reboot..
Enjoy...:good:
Thanks. I'll give it a try when I have time in the near future.
The issue that I'm having is that recovery won't flash anything and just gives me an error every time. Is there a way to upgrade the recovery without switching modems?
Mobile Odin, PC Odin... You probably have the stock kernel, which won't flash anything.

Mobile Odin is an app that allows you to flash kernels in tar format... Find it here on XDA.
Thank you for your help. If I continue to have problems I will continue the conversation later, but for now I'm going to try a touchwiz based ROM since battery life on stock seems so much better.
I'm following these exact steps and I can't get 3G nor 4G to work.

[Q] downgrade

hi i have stock rooted gs3 on kitkat and would ike to install goodness rom which i believe is on JB. (MIJJz+Goodness+JB+v10.0.4+MD4)
what do i need to do and what files?
ive tried to flash over but gives me error.so there is no way to do this by myself and i will need instructions.
please help and thanks
Its a fairly simple process. You can flash the ROM you are wanting to but because you are on the KitKat build you must NEVER try to revert to a lower boot loader or modem. Doing so will cause a bricked phone. Meaning you can't ever try to downgrade by flashing a previous stock tar through Odin. What you'll need to do is have a custom recovery. Philz is the recommended recovery for the KitKat build as its been doing the best so far. If you don't already have a custom recovery you can get it by searching 'philz recovery for sprint galaxy s3' (assuming you have sprint of course) you need to get the tar form so you can flash it through Odin. Once you've flashed it I suggest making a backup. After your backup is complete just flash the ROM you desire as instructed in its OP. Best of luck to you

try re downloading the rom and putting it on your internal storage when wiping on philiz touch when you click wipe/factory there should be a second option that says full wipe clean/new rom install which i have used to flash other roms on my s3 that should take care of wiping but when flashing i like to put my files in my internal storage to have less errors.........but i'm also new here try what i have said but make sure you have a backup of the working rom
edit: with the infuse since it didn't make it past GB officially when you want a JB rom and are on kk you just odin back to stock then re root add cwm then flash away but as i barely found out with the s3 you can't go back to stock if your on official 4.4.2 cause it will cause brick so if my info above this doesn't help then im sorry
ill just quit.
thanks to 6th_Hokage (ive tried ur instructions and doesnt work either) and droid716 .
its not that important to have that rom anyway.
