Hey all,
Having trouble activating the phone (Toro GNex). When the activate screen comes up I don't have a keyboard and with no menu key, can't find a way to enable it. Any help? I'm on Liquid Smooth currently, but can go back to stock if needed, just a pain. I ran into this on my DInc, but with the hard menu key could just force the keyboard on.
I tried forcing the menu key in the Liquid options with no luck either.
Thanks!
you dont need to activate it in the traditional verizon sense by dialing *228.
you do however, need to make sure your sim card is active.

Good call, thank you. I'm ASSuming that's done over the Verizon website? I had the phone activated at the store near a year ago and have since activated my DInc in its place due to hardware issues. Was looking to put the GNex back on to replace the DInc.

What started out as an effort to get my migrated XV6800 to operate on Verizon's data network has taken a nasty turn for the worse... Here is the long, sordid story, and I would really appreciate help in getting this device back onto the Verizon network.
This was originally a Qwest phone. I unlocked it and flashed it with a Verizon ROM, the file name is _Verizon XV6800_RUU_TITAN_VZW_WWE_3.57.605.1_RS_TITAN_3.37. 75_OM_VZW_ShipFULL. After I did that the customization routines did not run. Frankly, I don't know if they were supposed to or not, but they didn't.
I couldn't get the phone to connect to the Verizon network, even on *228. Eventually I applied a PRL and then I was able to connect to *228, and option #3 got the phone onto the voice network. I used it as my cell phone for two weeks with no issues on the voice network. Still, I wasn't able to get data working.
These are the things I tried while troubleshooting the data issue:
* Loaded the carrier cab from DCD
* Forced a CDMA only connection to download new keys
* Loaded the newest Verizon ROMs I found while at their website (this is the first time I saw customization routines)
* Told Verizon to switch me from pay as you go data to unlimited data (though it looks like they never turned this on)
* Tried activating my PDA with a different Verizon number, and then re-activating it with my original Verizon number
* Did a hard reset
It's those last two steps that screwed me. After I swapped the number off the phone I wasn't able to get it back. I could get to option #3, but it wouldn't let me activate the phone. Their tech support is no help and they are shocked when they look back at my account history and see that I was able to use *228 to get this phone on their network two weeks ago.
I then did a hard reset and got myself all the way back to the point where I was before I manually put the PRL in place. When I dial *228 I get the following: "Your account is not authorized to make calls to this phone number. I you would like to have additional capabilities added to your account please call customer service. Message 4, swich 691". I'm guessing that installing a PRL on the phone will now let me use option #3, because that's what made it work last time. However, I'm looking for instructions since I messed up somewhere in the process last time.
I just tried the following, but I get a recording saying they are unable to activate my phone at this time and then it tried to connect me to a person.
1. Install PRL
2. Install carrier cab
3. Install MMS cab
4. Run *228, #3
I know the person is just going to tell me that they can't help because their system doesn't recognize the ESN.
So what's the verdict, can I expect to get this phone back onto the voice network, will it ever work on the data network? Any help that anyone can offer in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.
Wrong forum? Should this have gone into upgrades?
moved thread by request of OP as Q&A forum did not provide answers nor does the OP expect it to.
Best regards,
Flar
Since being able to dial *228, have you called customer service to pull a new key for your device? When I upgraded a xv6800 rom I was not able to dial *228 until I did that. It was a bit of work getting it to pull the new key, but they did it. They first walked me through a manual registration process, then I think they tried to push it through and that worked.
Is your phone a Verizon phone? The pickle I'm in is that mine is not. When they ask me for the ESN they say it's unrecognized and that's pretty much it. They say they can't help me get it on the network because it's not a Verizon phone.

Yep mine is a verizon phone. I am wondering if this is a new implementation, because I have flashed several roms before and never had to call them to get my phone activated until about a month ago. When you dial *228 does it allow you to do a phone programing, I think it is option 1?
No. 1, 2, & 3 all fail. I just called tech support again, hoping getting a new A key would resolve this. He told me he couldn't give me an A key unless the phone's ESN was in the system and the only way to get it in there is through *228, #3... Kind of a Catch 22.
His last suggestion was that I activate a different PDA on my number and see if maybe the computer is choking because my current phone isn't a PDA, and this one is. Kind of sounds like clutching at straws, but he said at this point I've done all that can be done, short of that.
I find really odd, and extremely frustrating, that I can't find anyone else who has been through this with a non-Verizon phone.

Just finished playing with my new 6900 and want to activate it (GPS seems to be working even with the cdma antenna off). I don't know if it's because I'm not in my home area or because they are onto the custom rom but activation fails by *228,2 *228,1 *228,3 (followed by *228,1) and even by typing the esn into the website. This is a brand new unactivated phone. The fail message says to call customer service. Are they going to realize it's a custom rom?

Nah, just tell em you recently flashed the 6.1 ROM update, or you Master Reset the phone and even after *228 you can't get the phone to authenticate calls. They will re-establish it in the system and you'll be good to go.

Gave them a call. The woman I spoke to had me dial ##778 which didn't work (because of nfsfans's dialer app that came with his 6.5 package, I guess).
Any thoughts?

Try ##778# that should do it. Or you can go in to your file explorer and under the windows folder run the EPST.ink

I should have updated the thread... I figured out the ##778# thing this morning but then the password was not 000000 so I had to run getspc.exe to retrieve it. Now, they've gone through the manual set up and, with them doing a couple things on their end, I'm HALFWAY (maybe 1/3) there:
(1) the phone dials but thinks it's roaming (and this mght have something to do with *228 not working...)
(2) Data connection does not work. I recall seeing how to fix this (it is missing some password info or something) and am looking for the thread now... (if someone knows where it is I'd be much obliged) .
I've made 3-4 calls to verizon now, each but the last ending suddenly when they suggested I do a hard reset.
Truthfully, I swear there's some issue with my account that requires voodoo everytime I need to activate a phone. This was my first custom rom but on two different numbers with a handful of pda phones, I can't remember the last time an activation was smoothly. A phone on my other line was roaming mysteriously for a while too and only remedied when I activated a new one.
Thanks all!
I flashed my phone with cyanogen mod 7. I couldn't activate because I was no longer on my Alltel network. So I RUU back to my stock ROM and everything is good, except I still can't activate my phone. I'm stuck using my old lg scoop. Can anyone help me out? Do I need to call customer service? And if I do, what do I say to keep them from finding out that I rooted my phone.
This is a replacement phone and I activated it and rooted the day of, but when I flashed, it all messed up so I activated my old phone. I don't know if that makes a difference.
Also, when I try to activate my desire through the Alltel website, I get this message "Unfortunately, there's an error with your request. The ESN/MEID is associated with another wireless carrier, a wireless Internet card, an analog phone, or a non-e911 compliant phone. For assistance, please call Customer Service."
What do you mean by "activate"?
Like dialing *228 and being able to use the phone. Like making calls and such. I had to activate my old phone because my desire was stuck on splash screen, but now that I done the RUU it's fine. I just can't activate it to use it.
You shouldn't need to activate it?... Never heard of this before. Not needed to do anything like that for mine. Have a look around the forums.
+1 what GoogleJelly said. Never heard of such thing.
Sent from my customized HTC Desire using TTP
I did and found nothing. I need to do it because when my desire was stuck on the splash screen i couldn't fix it that day so I activated my old one so i could have a working phone. Now when I try to activate my desire again, I get the above messages.
psiloveyoum0re,
Am I correct in assuming that the phone is not a GSM based phone, rather it's a CDMA based phone ?
Yeah, activation isnt for GSM (Sim Card) phones, only CDMA ones.
That I do know, but how to help - sorry, no idea (we are all GSM here in the UK)..
Yes, correct. It is a CDMA phone.
So due to various circumstances, I have in my possession a DInc that can't be activated on cellular networks.
first of all, when I start up the phone I get "Problem with activation" screen
"Unable to activate your phone. You may need to find an area with better coverage (near a window, or outside). et.c etc. etc."
Is there any way to get past this screen so I can connect it to my computer and root it?
And once I do have it rooted, is there any good media-only ROM for the Incredible?
Thanks!

Try pressing on the activation screen the top left corner, top right corner, bottom right corner, and then botton left corner. On some roms this will bypass the screen. Also if you keep trying repeatedly to activate and fail it will usually bypass the screen after 4 or 5 times.
Tried both of those and still not working. I have hit "Try Again" probably 200+ times. So irritating
Why cant you activate, are you not with verizion anymore?

I am, with a different phone. I think it is a hardware problem with the cellular antenna, because I took it to the Verizon store yesterday and they couldn't get it to work even after activating my phone number on it
I would really hate to send it to be repaired for a function I wouldn't use it for, just because the software won't let me do anything

Go to verizion.com go to your account and reactivate the incredible, then do the activation on the phone. Once done reactivate your new phone on the site again.
Could have a bad ESN

That's what we tried in the store, but it couldn't dial * 228 even after being activated on my account
I bought this phone for myself a while back, rooted it and put some custom roms on it but never activated it. I just recently sold the phone to someone online, but theyre claiming they cannot activate the phone. When the phone first boots up it prompts you to activate on the rom I have on it, but I never tried that myself
Is there a way that this phone can be activated so I can help this guy?

I'm currently on the other end of that dilemma where the previous owner activated and I'm unable to Activate. Custom roms seems to have removed the Activate option and I'm trying to avoid reverting to stock. Let me know if you find any answers. Thanks.
if its virgin mobile usa you can do an over the phone activation with customer support. have the meid and serial number handy and they will do the rest.
