Hi guys,
as my Nexus 4 is about to arrive I'd like to flash back to stock rom (or something that feels like the stock rom in terms of usability and looks).
Right now I am running CM7, which is nice for me, but I want to give my Desire to a family member that never had a smartphone before and is basicly interested in mailing, texting, phonecalling and listening to music.
Some light surfing, that's it.
In my opinion she would be better of with the simple and easy-to-start with HTC Sense, so where can I get such a rom? Unfortunally I was smart enough to just flash CM7 without doing any backups..
Thanks in advance!
Check the desire index in the dev section. You have all the desire roms listed there.

i would like to know which benefits i would get if i root my phone
why should i do it or why not
an if it makes sense, were can i find a howto
thx
Are you serious mate? Its a sticky at the absolute top in the Desire Android Development Forum. Maybe you browse around a bit next time (or use the search) before opening a new thread (about the 1 Mio'th one about this topic)...

Rooting gives you the ability to flash custom roms, these are generally built ontop of released or customized version of stock roms, this means you don't have to wait for a feature to be sent to your phone over the over the air upgrades, it also means you can customize your phone fully,I.e. custom icons down to the base level stuff like fonts and batery icons you can also use apps that require escalated permissions such as the terminal app and things like screenshots, cache cleaning.
Reasons not to root, warranty you loose it.
Bricking if you mess up you can potentially have a nice peice of plastic that does nothing.
Reliability the quality of custom roms has come along dramatically since the first rom but you are after all flashing some one else's project these roms are very well done and coded to a professional level but they simple do not nave the quality testing and reliability of the stock roms as these are often personal projects.
And guides on how to are frequent on here as are the reason to and not to root, look above.

so if i want to install a custom Android ROM (2.2 Froyo) with Sense i must root my phone...
and the other thing is, to remove some apps i don't need.... like stocks
but if i'm happy as it is there is no need?
well thx for the info
think I'll get to know my cell phone first then a little
almost have it for 3 weeks now =)
just to be able to load a rom without the sense and worth it!
Try launcher pro in the market and betterbut and I think you will be happy unless you want wireless tether and the other benefits, most sense users don't like the UI that's all.

the launcher of sense is not very bad.
the really bad are the internal apps: calendar, contacts...
i root and koad a non sense rom, and i have a nexus but without the hardware nexus bugs
Hi guys I'm new to android... coming from an iPhone. I just want to know why some people hate sense UI? I just had my Desire for 1 week so I don't have an idea why some people prefer stock android instead of the sense UI. For me I think the sense UI is nice. Can you guys enlighten me. TIA!
I think you will find that most Desire users like Sense, but in a "technical" community such as this you will find a reasonable proportion of people who prefer stock and/or other launchers.
Personally, I think Sense improves the Android user experience and that's a good thing. I had stock on my G1 (obviously), and got a Hero (which has Sense). If I'd wanted a stock experience, I would've bought a Nexus One over the Desire, but I think Sense is great and I prefer the Desires hardware anyway.
Regards,
Dave

Welcome to Android. Nice to see you've broken the shackles of Apple.
I'm not sure why to be honest. Sense, in my opinion, makes the Android experience very smooth and feels nicely polished. There are more widgets, home screens etc...
I can only speculate that people like to be different and maybe feel that Sense somehow "weighs down" the phone with unnecessary baggage. At least on the older slower devices maybe.
Given that you can set the phone to launch the stock Android experience without Sense anyway, I'd say it's a mystery why anyone would be anti-Sense.
Those people do prefer life without it, I too would love to know your rationale.
Cheers,
HRH

Thanks for the welcome. I changed my phone to android cause the last three previous phone I had was iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3Gs and I just had it with Apple and their iTree . With all the limitation, the jailbreaking, the iTunes crap... and add all that to the new iPhone 4 antennagate problem and you feel like you just wanna kick the crap out Steve Jobs face. hehehehe
Anyway, I think maybe you guys are right... maybe It's because of some older HTC phones that are not quite on par with the Desire specs that makes their sense UI experience a little bit problematic. I've been playing with my Desire since I got it non-stop (except when I'm at work of course) and I like the sense UI very much with all those additional widget and additional option from HTC. I don't see any lagging or any problematic situation caused by the UI itself... and it's because of the powerful specs of the Desire itself.
Well, if anybody else has a better idea on why... based on their experience and all. Give us some feedback.
Cheers guys!
Oh and by the way, I'm loving my new HTC Desire... I just wish the rumored HTC Desire HD is available already cause I wanted to get a bigger screen for browsing. But the Desire now is amazing... what more when the new Desire HD is available. But what the heck... as Steve Jobs said "No one is going to buy those big screen" right? (sarcasm). hehehehe
Hello!
I have actually an Arc though it's rooted for a while it seems it will have poor custom roms support (actually zero) while I was a custom rom addict on the N1
I am waiting now for the Sensation because of its upgraded hardware over DHD, better screen, better cpu, better battery?,better speaker and of course the infamous SenSe 3.0
BUT
I have already all these upgrades on my Arc (only cpu dual core) and if I am already bored of my Arc its mainly because it doesn't have roms yet and will never have as much as a DHD.
The Sensation could be locked as tight as the incredible S which is of course a big problem for custom roms...
So DHD can still be the best HTC phone for a custom roms lover like me right?
I am only afraid of battery life, if it can be as good as N1 I don't care but if it's like the nokia n95 one...
You can expect about a day's worth of use depending on ROM, kernel, radio, CPU settings etc. on the DHD with use.
Some people say the get 8 hours, some say 16 hours, some say even longer. Really depends on what you do to the phone (software and usage).
Personally I'd wait for the Sensation. Where there's a will there's a way and here at xda the will is mighty indeed.
Custom ROM support is all about popularity - the more people own a particular phone, then the more custom roms there will be for it. Sensation will definitely be more popular than the arc (though never as good looking!)
That's why the Desire HD is still attractive, everything is here: MIUI, ported IS and DS roms, CM7,Modaco...
I really preffer the Sensation above all other devices but if it will be locked like the IS...

IT´S a time question that the sensation protection falls....time to the time... Let's not go forward that still is not developing in XDA hahhahah
Yep I know that sooner or later any device can be unlocked, the X10 is a good exemple but in that case it took 10 months to do it
It's simple. Do you want the best phone spec wise or do you want the phone that is currently the most customisable?
If you want best spec phone now and don't mind a potential wait for root solution then get something like the Sensation.
If ability to gain root asap is priority then get DHD or equivalent.
That's it. Make the decision.

Hello.
After some time, decided to root and flash custom rom to my device. The problem i have is can not decide which one to flash, because there are a ton of them. I could try every, but do not have time for that, using HOX every day for work, so i need it to be well-functioning.
So maybe someone who is invovled in HOX XDA android development more than me suggest which ROM should i choose? Mostly i use the device for navigation and stuff that internet connection is involved. HTC Sense is not the case, most of the time i use other launcher. I prefer best balance between connectivity, speed and battery life.
Thank you for your time.
U can try blade elite with xm kernel. Is working for me great

I'm proud owner of both hTC Desire and hTC One V. I rooted and s-offed Desire some time ago, tried variety of ROMs and currently using it as daily driver with Evervolvs KitKat nightly installed.
I bought HOV as a replacement for my old Desire and was badly suprised when HOV started to lag. Placing a call or starting an SMS sometimes takes up to 2 minutes. Using it on daily basis is near to imposible. I didn't think of rooting HOV since I still have warranty. Now I changed my mind, which brings me to my question.
Should I go with that and root, etc. , or should I stick with Desire, which currently works more fluid than HOV? Will HOV get that much better with custom ROM, or should I just sell it and forget it? Any opinion is appreciated. Thanks.

HOV is better with a custom ROM.. the stock One V ROM is slow at times... it's one of the reasons why I rooted
@MameTozhio has right. My One V was really slow and I rooted it when it has 1 year and 3 months. Now this phone is really smooth and really fast but don't use ROMs like mySensev because it's like stock slow but really pretty(animations etc, full sense)

Really good ROMs are:
Sense
Ignorance V4(V3 is good too better battery life)
HTCdroid(Really pretty and fast)
AOSP
Shpongle
NexusPrimo
ParanoidAndroid(AOSPA)
Upcoming:
TrippedOutROM(4.2.2) Really stable fast smooth WiFi doesn't work
The problem with the One V is ram. You can be using something like slim bean completely stripped down to the bare minimum of system applications and data apps and it still fails on you. Just use the stock browser on one or two pages and the entire device will freeze up requiring a reboot. Horrible. In truth we need a way to move many apps out of the system partition to either true sd or at the very least to the data partition. And I do not suggest anyone purchase virgin mobiles version of the htc desire unless you want the same issues again. Best off buying something else.

A2SD works. Expand RAM works for me. I've got 2GB of RAM now(32GB SD+64GB HDD disc connected to One V).
hello fellas finally i got my hox back from guarantee they didnt change the phone also my phone's guarantee is over so i can flash it and use it with custom roms
i wanna keep sense because im in love with it but i need more battery life (because of my gf) which rom i should use for that? also what is the diffrence between original room development and custom room development?
im gonna use it like 3-4 more months then probably gonna wait for m9 or going to buy a Z3
