Cm7.2 is the fastest, it's like running butter. Great battery life and tons of ram. It is lacking in features though.
Code fire x4.2 is the second fastest, and has all the newest features. It's more than ready for daily usage, but it won't be as fast as gingerbread.
Aospx isn't all that fast, and while it sports the newer Holo theme, multitasking etc, it ain't all that great. Sorry to the devs, it was a great rom but now there are better alternatives

I wonder why developers do not include ad hoc networks in their roms??

Aospx>CfX
However i dont remember how is cm7. And remember im talking about 3d games. Not rom smoothness etc.

I'm giving my old HTC Desire to my friend, but before I do I want to flash the best ROM for a laymen's use, in terms of stability, battery life and speed.
Personally, I have a Galaxy Nexus with JB and I love it - I think JB heralds a new era in which android finally shows that iOS is just hype and not god.
I've seen there are ROMs right the way up to Jelly Bean, which I find pretty amazing considering the age of the Desire handset - however, there must be quite a few issues to iron out, and I doubt that my friend, who will be more worried about his phone working than whether it's up to date with android, will appreciate these issues.
So which ROM would you recommend? Quick answers appreciated cause I need to give him the phone within two hours! Lol
Thanks for your help

It's beautiful and stable, but it's too heavy (read slow) even on fast sd. If you have to sell the phone, just install stock rom (with sense), or an aosp like cm7 or oxygen.
No man, install stock Oxygen rom , create partition ext4 for a2sd. And that is it. Rom is completely bug free, and it has bedt battery life. Speed is great, and no laggs at all !

If you want stable but don't like stock, I would suggest cm7 (mrom) or the old gingerbread miui (though this may be harder to find unless someone still has it, try rom manager). Ics and jellybean can be iffy since we never got an official release and a proper kernel.

+1 for Skyraider Zeus, got an iPhone and I gave my DI2 to my mom threw Skyraider on it because I didn't want to have to talk her through clearing data to make camera's work and I used it for two days while the new phone was in the mail and forgot why I stopped using it. One of the smoother/fast roms and the battery life is amazing. Easily double what I got on Viper's.

I have run this rom with and without the scripts, I don't see much if any difference. You don't have to use those if you don't want to. And you don't need an app to overclock, it has that in settings. But you can use that to undervolt and change I/o's. As phonetool stated, this rom runs really well on this phone. Give it a shot.

I had been using DKStunna's Global 10.1 JB ROM build 3 as my DD for a few months and it was mostly stable. It would lag out once in a while I was managing apps, but it was pretty fast with the built-in Nova Launcher. I got tired of not having a working camcorder and since DKStunna broke his Vivow and ceased development I decided to switch to ChillyBean's ParanoidAndroid/PAC 2.19 ROM. So far it's been awesome! It has "inverted" GAPPS, Facebook, and some other core system apps, which I'm not a fan of, but it's supposedly something you can change. I have a working camcorder again (after a few tweaks), which is what I was looking for. It looks like ChillyBean broke his Vivow also so I don't know how much more development he'll be able to do, which is very sad. Anyway, I highly recommend the latest ParanoidAndroid.

Hi,
I`m running the Spazedog ICS on my desire and it is really fast (appr. 2100 pts at Quadrant)
If tried JB several times and it`s always slower and laggier.
Is there a real benefit of JB?
Right now I`m using a razr i with 4.1.2.
Great phone, fast, small, well build, but without all the goodies of CM not suitable for me.
The good old desire with the big community is still hard to beat.
I used to use spazedog ICS and I now use PA 4.2.2, and its definitely faster.
Especially now that nikez has ported ion to the kernel we use, and that most active rom devs have implemented it.

JB has improved the graphical performance and subsequently pride of HTC Desire. The 3d rendering is a lot better than the previous CM7 ROMs. I used to play several heavy games on CM7 but I was disappointed at the stuttering 3D performance. Then I gave a try to JB ROMs and viola! There was a huge difference in the quality.
Plus, I'm a huge fan of sound, and I've got very sensitive taste for audio quality. CM7 ROMs, even with the DSP equaliser weren't good enough, until I applied the BeatsAudio mod to JB ROMs. There was this huge difference in sound quality too.

Cool but ...
I was using VJ's CM 10.1 ROM for the past few months. It's really fast and improvements all around the OS, the multitude of customisations!
One major turn off was the random reboots. Can't have that while working, so went back to GB.

Games are definitely slower though. Not much of a problem, since I rarely play games on my trusty 3 yr old HTC Desire.

Beats audio is nothing but money making marketing thing, in order to get the full affect of beats audio headphones, u have to use them on something that has the software installed, which is bs if u ask me and they just another set of over priced headphones. Beats headphones are widely known for their bad sound quality. Even they admitted that. As for beats audio app, it is just an adjusted equalizer, so if you have one you can control, it is even better then.
For JB roms the smoothest I've found were Nikez and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2368911 it's true that gingerbread has the best speed then ICS but I get the impression that the great Devs are getting close on some new roms!
