I'm giving my old HTC Desire to my friend, but before I do I want to flash the best ROM for a laymen's use, in terms of stability, battery life and speed.
Personally, I have a Galaxy Nexus with JB and I love it - I think JB heralds a new era in which android finally shows that iOS is just hype and not god.
I've seen there are ROMs right the way up to Jelly Bean, which I find pretty amazing considering the age of the Desire handset - however, there must be quite a few issues to iron out, and I doubt that my friend, who will be more worried about his phone working than whether it's up to date with android, will appreciate these issues.
So which ROM would you recommend? Quick answers appreciated cause I need to give him the phone within two hours! Lol
Thanks for your help

I really enjoy Mr. mephisto and RSK team rom, the 3.5 sense is awsome and the AMAZE cam is.. well.. AMAZING.
I have it for almost 2 months now.
It gives the old Desire a great new look!
and with the aroma installer is super customized.

No freezes, running smoother than any other rom i had.
you need S-off with CM7 and 4EXT touch recovery.
Everything is written in the Thread.

It's beautiful and stable, but it's too heavy (read slow) even on fast sd. If you have to sell the phone, just install stock rom (with sense), or an aosp like cm7 or oxygen.
No man, install stock Oxygen rom , create partition ext4 for a2sd. And that is it. Rom is completely bug free, and it has bedt battery life. Speed is great, and no laggs at all !

U wouldnt happen to have a working link to COOL DROID v3 ?
The only reason I might even consider changing this rom I'm using would be somewhat poor multitasking. But I think I'll most likely need to finally upgrade to a better device.

Oxygen 2.3.2 + thalamus r4 kernel. Use Oxygen r2 hboot. If You need more space, with GParted make ext3 or ex4 partition.
I've found it best combination (almost one year using it). It's not full of widgets like Sense roms, but You can install Fancy Wigdets or Beautiful Widgets for clock and weather similar to Sense.
I put the last stable version of miui on my dads desire, and it runs perfectly so far. Using the 2.3.7 os which is pretty stable.idk about battery life tho

I'm stuck on Cool Sense HD v7 (link see my sig - v7 is released as beta later in the thread). It's as fast as any stock froyo and works absolutely stable for me. Will never go back to sense1...
InsertCoin 1.9.1 is damn fast, never had lags, battery life is around 24-36hrs on medium usage.
I'm using iNsertCoin 1.8h and it's very good.

I've been using Android Revolution HD and Virtuous.
They're really nice, and better than what I they would be like.
I'm waiting on the update on Virtuous that's going to happen the next couple of days, they're happening to port over Sense 3.5.
I would personally recommend Virtuous Unity 2.37. No bugs, fully functional, fast and it's good on the battery. I also use the recommended radio with matching RIL aswell.

MIUI XJ since New year, probably will try with some Sense ROM soon
I'm still using CM7.2 RC1. Very stable and fast.
Could anyone explain to me why everybody is so hyped about ICS? I mean I appreciate what the devs of ICS ROMs do and it's great that they make ICS possible on our old Desires.
I tried Sandvold's ROM and BCM. They're quite good and making good progess, but I always came back to CM7.
I actually don't see a point in switching to ICS (yet) unless you like flashing and testing new ROMs, because CyanogenMod 7 and other 2.3 ROMs seem more stable and faster and they have all the features ICS offers.
Is it the looks of ICS or just that it's new and you want to test it?
I'll probably switch over eventually, but at the moment I'm just curious what you like about ICS.
Hi there,
Since last December, I'm using last version of Oxygen, but during this time I have an issue with camera. Every time I'm started the camera an error "SDcard is unmounted" occurs. I had to unmount, mount again my sdcard and really fast switch to camera application, sometimes two or free times in order to take a photo.
Now I'm trying to find stable ROM for daily use, but I see that developers gone from desire device, only few ICS ROMS, and as I red there isn't enough stable ROM for daily use.
What do you recommend? It could be JB, ICS, GB, the first goal it have to be stable without any major issues and without Sense.
Is way to have a stable rom? I don't want to come back to stock.
Im using EUROSKANK CM 7 rom, no problems, all is working. For me this is best stable rom.

Anyway since you are on the lookout for a new rom then you can try the suggestions the the commenters above.

Thanks everyone for answers,
I'll reading about ROMs mentioned in your answers, for now Nick's Phone looks the best.
About my issue, I reinstalled Oxygen in January, with _total_ wipe: STOCK -> ROOT -> S-OFF -> Oxygen. Now I'll try to check my SDcard (it is 4Gb ADATA class 6, and is old like a phone) I will try to dd if=/dev/zero on this card, maybe this is card issue not rom.

Well I tried all the ICS and JB ROMs but trust me, they are not for daily use. Random reboots, phone freezing and many other little niggles are a pain.
Then I tried the eye candy Sense 3.5 ones. Though everything works in them stability is an issue. Freezing, bsod etc are few issues I faced.

I heard about it too. Only issue I found was that the development on it was stopped and so was apprehensive of the support.
Also the OP of the ROM says few users are facing freezing issues while an incoming call. I had this issue earlier too on the RSK teams ROM.

I've had good experiences with Runny Rom too. I've used Runnymede AIO for a long time and also had those freezing issues you mention, but it's not only caused by the ROM itself directly. Most likely it's caused by the SD card. I've used 2 different 16GB class 6 cards (Samsung and Sandisk) and they both caused problems. I'm using a class 4 32gb sandisk now I didn't have any single freeze yet.
But, like said before, those sense 3.5 ROMs are quite heavy, probably the most heavy for your SD card. For stable and lagfree sense I wouldn't advise them. It might work, but can also cause a lot of problems.
Hi,
today I got the idea of changing my current ROM to one that is 100% stable, runs very smooth and has a good battery life/low resource use.
I was thinking of a modified Froyo rom like Starburst. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916417 )
I'm not interested in any extra functionality besides phone-music player. I just need it to do those two things perfectly and to never choke, freeze. (for example my current ROM has frequent freezes of the music app during playback).
What do you think?
Thanks for your time

I think I found CM7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957344) and I know MildWild and I am using it now. I would like to change it. Overall it's smooth but the music player glitches are getting to me, since I use that several times a day.
CM7 seems incomplete by the looks of some comments. I would like something final.
That being said, thank you for suggesting those two.
