AS the title explains, I was running rooted ICS and did the update to JB over Kies. The root broke, I am trying to figure out the steps I need to take to put the phone back into rooted JB. SuperSU and Titanium backup are both dead - uninstalled SuperSU and went to reinstall it but it says I cant.

Just root the phone again the same way you did it for ICS.

Just got my S3. Should I take the initial OTA or will that make it harder for me to root?
I've done my initial homework by searching but I'm still a little unclear. I'm so accustomed to HTC with their OTAs changing Hboot and preventing s-off, etc. I found the guide on how to root but does the bootloader need to be unlocked?
This is my first Samsung device so please be gentle to this noob.

Your safe to take it, initial root process will be the same regardless. You'll most likely root flashing cwm recovery or a insecure kernel in odin so the system wont matter.only the vzw model has a locked bootloader. doesnt apply to us
If you are at n00b status i personally reccomend mskips toolkit found here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746680 ---guys a genius, has everything you need.
you can't OTA update a phone that's rooted or has CWM on it, so definitely update before you root.
Exactly, it will download but will fail on the install because CWM is installed. You must have the Samsung stock recovery installed in order to update. Depending on what ROM you are running, you can re-install stock recovery, install OTA update, re-install CWM, then root again. That is what I did, but I am running Rooted Stock.

Really the ota's don't matter ne way as the only important parts are the modems which can be dl'd here and applied in cwm anyway
Thanks fellas. My only concern was with the ability to root and staying unlocked after taking an OTA. I'm traumatized by the EVO 3D's OTA that updated the Hboot and was just a pain in the ass.
What's the current OTA address anyway?

Hello,
So I recently had my SGS3 rooted until I stupidly installed the OTA update that Att released. Everything was good, but now my phone was unrooted and I was unable to reroot using conventional rooting methods. Now, I figured that it would be good to install a custom ROM in order to re root my phone and put jelly bean on it. However, when I went into the Clockwork mod recovery, it gave me a status 7 error while trying to install the latest nightly build of CyanogenMod 10. I also cleared out all the caches and did a factory reset. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
Thank you very much for your help!

Download the file below file to your S3 and install it via Mobile Odin to get CWM back.
Well, from what I read, you aren't rooted anymore.

If I recall correctly, Status 7 means you have an older/not-supported version of CWM installed. Your best bet is going to be to download the Samsung Galaxy S3 QCom ToolKit, and use that to install the proper CWM version. Then you will be able to wipe/install a custom ROM.
I really need help my phone is an SGH I747M and it's rooted. But I want to unroot it without installing the stock firmware. I already have jelly bean telus, and I don't want to do a recovery with Kies. And I can't do a backup because I only have 2 gb on my Ex sd card and internal sd card. Also what would happen if I just un installed the superuser app? Also could I update the phone with Kies even if the phone is rooted?

Hi Jacob, I was looking for instructions on an AT&T update to Jelly Bean [SGH I747] and wanted to do it without Kies to retain root and came across Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper which seems like it might do what you want. I just started looking here for instructions on how to do the update without using Kies as this was where I landed after my first search. I'd heard it can be done using Odin but I'm not well-versed enough (about .01 degrees above newb and still searching.
All I've done so far is just root this phone, my Atrix which I sold I unlocked the bootloader, but haven't done that yet on this phone and wasn't planning to. Can anyone steer me toward a thread for an upgrade to Jelly Bean (I I dloaded the official AT&T release and thought that I could use Rootkeeper to protect root as I've heard using Kies at all would at least remove the possiblility of getting it back for me but thought it might be possible the way I described. I was hoping I could find out if that was true and if anyone could help steer me toward the right thread for the update. Thanks --ct
do NOT attempt to unlock this phone's bootloader. only the verizon versions need that and attempting to do so on this phone WILL result in a hard brick.
if you would like to do an OTA update, voodoo ota rootkeeper would most likely be your solution.

Thanks cehf. That is good news as all I could find about Kies was discouraging but even thought it is call "ota" rootkeeper that it would work with it. And that if you didn't bother to wait for the results of the work being done to address the problems and just did the OTA update anyway that you'd lose root with no immediate chance of regaining it. So in this case I haven't really done anything except download the pieces. So I just need to use Voodoo first, then bring Kies up to speed, do the update and then unprotect root and delete the backup?:good:

That's an option, yes.
Your other option is to find your carrier's stock ROM here (pre-rooted) and flash it through Odin.
Remember to make a backup first.

I have used the Voodoo OTA on a Motorola Atrix to unroot before applying an update, then using it to re-root. Worked like a charm. Haven't had a chance to try it on my S3 yet.
i checked the SuperSU app, there is an option says FULL UNROOT, im not sure if it will work
other than that, the only unroot method i know is flash stock rom in odin
So I rooted my Note II but I left the stock ROM on the phone, and AT&T just pushed a big OTA update. What steps do I need to be able to install an OTA update now? After a bit of research, it seems I need to unroot? I've just never had to do this before because I usually just use custom ROMs, but on the Note I wanted to leave the stock ROM in place.

I used MrRobinsons' root injected ROM which was UCAMA4 (I think) and left the recovery alone, used the root access app that I bought to keep root. I did not remove any AT&T apps and was able to update to UCAMC3 without any problems. And the app that I bought kept my root access.

Well -ALL- I did was root, install clockwork recovery, and Super SU. So I'm wondering what I need to do to be able to install an OTA update now, because I currently cannot.
It is my understanding that you must leave the recovery stock. I have also read that you must leave the AT&T apps in there but I am not sure about that. So if you want the update go back to stock then update then change your recovery.

Well it's been a while since I've messed with this, so I just need to find instructions on how to return to stock.
Edit: Found a thread to remove root and factory reset, but my OTA update still won't install.
Edit2: Goes to the AT&T Updating progress screen and fails at about 25% and then reboots and starts up as normal.

I don't have a solution to your problem, but I am very curious which AT&T update you are referring to.

No idea, it's a ~65mb update that just came up yesterday for me. I was looking to reset my phone back to factory anyways lately, so I just decided to do it now on account of there being an update. Since it's not working anyways, I might just re-root and flash a custom ROM, but then I lose S-Pen functionality, but I don't use the pen much these days anyways.
The update has two possibilities...
Either it's the latest UCAMC3 update for UCAMA4.....or...
If updating from the UCAMA4 to C3....and the update has an interrupt...or errors....it "can" complete the update process and show a finished status...but will prompt the user again later and download the update again....minus the updater files placed to cache....because they already exist...
I've had this happen twice in so many months as I returned to stock for various reasons...
The file size is roughly 65 meg.....while the complete update is 68.86 meg..
Just take the update...as it's the UCAMC3 minus the updater...g

Hi,
I have a rooted Sprint GS3, running the stock ROM with just one or two root based apps. Do I need to unroot to accept the OTA update? If so, how do I go about doing that?

if you would like to run a 4.3 stock ROM, there are a couple in the development section that you can choose from without having to run the 4.3 boot loader that contains KNOX. That way you don't have to go through the unroot process to accept the OTA.

Thanks. I think the preference is to accept the OTA. If we need to unroot, we'll do that if we can figure out how. Sorry for being a little vague. I'm trying to help someone else out.
ok, you can go here Restore to unrooted MD4 follow that and you're good to go
I was stock rooted with clockwork recovery.
Took the OTA without unrooting with no problems at all, just had to re-root when it was done.

Really? I thought it was always a bad idea with a custom recovery. Maybe we will try it rooted as well. Thanks.
Every other time I've tried it would download, but just wouldn't flash the OTA.
This time, it did. Surprised me.

Relax . You do not have to update. You do not have to lose Root. Check out THIS thread. It will explain a few things to you in detail about Updates, and how to stop the update nag. If you want to update to the latest TW 4.3 Stock Rooted, check out the thread HERE. Just make sure you read, and read again before doing anything. Also make sure to download the correct Rom. There are several versions on the thread.

Thanks for the answer.
I actually want to update to stock 4.3, and I was trying to achieve that by getting the OTA update.
And i was wondering if i can still do that?
If I simply can't then I'll just go to CM instead of getting other rooms since I used to have them with my old HTC.
Thanks again
If you want completely Stock Rooted 4.3, it's the second link I posted for you. It's the Stock, Rooted, Factory Rom, with Knox removed. All done by CNexus . Just be sure to read before doing anything. As there are several versions posted. I would highly suggest going this route instead of taking the OTA update. Once you take the OTA you will have Knox, and a different bootloader.

Thanks a lot man, I'm having a problem installing the ROM, I'm getting assert error (status 7) error when trying to install the odexed rom,
I have just updated my CWM to 6.0.4.5
Sorry I cant reply to the thread directly, need 10 posts to be able to do so.

edit: now it's stuck on boot loop
edit: I downloaded the original recovery rom and installed it from ordin, then updated phone through kies. it's all good now.
