Your impression on Official Jellybean? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Well, since the official Jellybean update rolled out today for most Canadian carriers (December 2nd,2012) , I feel it be appropriate to make a thread starting your opinions on the update itself .
Update (December 3rd 2012) : ATT Official jellybean released!
What do you like/dislike so far about the update? Improvements? Disappointments?
Please keep it appropriate.

Fast...very Fast.....interface looks nice too

Can you customize the notification shortcuts in this version?

Im curious about audio quality.... On the leak from several months ago.. The music audio was terrible... so bad I downgraded back to official...
Downloading now..... I am quite excited...

So far so good. I was able to retain root using Voodoo's OTA Root Keeper. A lot more bloatware was added by Rogers, but TBP took care of that.
Does anyone notice their devices running a little hotter to the touch?

Nice can't wait to get ours in Cali!

Let's just say I was getting 4/5k on quadrant standard before, after my first test was 5965.

is anyone else's status bar a little grey after the update?

Can anyone post their experiences of updating while Rooted? Did you face any errors or roadblocks? Or did it simply install and remove/keep your root access?

I lost root because I did the update via Kies and didn't notice that OTA Root Keeper doesn't work with Kies updates.
That said, I used the SGS3 Toolkit and rooted it with option 4 without issue.

It is so awesome

i wonder if it's a mistake or not... kind of annoying :/. and the wifi icon looks a little cut off.
tbh, i hadn't rooted my s3 until now, but this update actually makes me want to do it. it just highlights how much of a visual mess touchwiz is....
i actually liked touchwiz on ics, but im missing aokp from my nexus s. maybe ill root my phone again, and continue working on my theme =)

I'm very curious on how different this release is compared to the t-mobile Frosty jb v11. Anyone know?

The Gayish status bar is part of the Jellybean OS, as the Note II has it as well as is running JB.
My WIFI Icon doesnt seem to be cut off

The greyness of the notification bar is on purpose. It is to prevent prematurely wearing out the blue pixel subset on AMOLED screens. I would keep it.

Whenever you guys get through a recharge cycle, can you check if it fixed the cell standby bug (huge percentage, like 20-30%, when really 2-3%?)?
Thanks in advance, mates.

I downloaded (super slow, even over wifi) booted into stock recovery and right into an error.
Going to try with Kies. If it doesn't work that way I'll flash stock unrooted through Odin and try than...

No Update

My wife and I have the same phone, both have cwm installed and rooted.. Today she got a upgrade to Android 4.1.1 and mine is still 4.0.4. I checkd mine and it say my phone is up to date. What is up with that... I checked after the update and her phone still has root..
Never mind. After clearing google service framework in app manager, it worked, downloading now.. BTW what is the big deal on this up date? As I haven't noticed much difference in looks anyway..
It upgrades the software from Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean.

You really see no difference in ICS and jellybean?
Google search is different. Menu settings are different. Web browser is different. Off the top of my head. You can always go back to ics if you don't like it. No one would be offended.

JB runs alot smoother. ICS was a great upgrade from GB lol.. But JB overall is smooth, quicker, and above stated has changed. But run what you like to run. only opinion that truly matters is yours.
I'm running JB, but I thought there was a physical difference, like the OS looked a lot different. But it still looks like Ice to me..
As far as i know if u are rooted and try to take the jb update it doesnt over write after it install the jb update for me it reboots into twrp recovery I reboot im still Rooted on 4.0.4

When can I expect to get update
My wife and I just upgraded to the Galaxy S III last Friday when Sam's Club had them for 96 cents (we couldn't pass up the deal). I have gone about as far as I want to on setting up the phone before I get the update. As I ran a none standard Epic 4G I never received software updates from Sprint. My question is when can I expect to receive this update????
I need to root the S3 so that I can finish setting it up.
Thanks for the information.

Not really too sure but it should be soon. Maybe within the first month of next year? the note just got it and we should soon follow. Its not easy either because there are a lot of updating that needs to be done and they test everything so it takes time. It will be some time before we get 4.2 and by that time, google will probably have released another OS in google IO. Ill be real, JB is great on these devices, i actually want google to slow down the updates so that manufacturers can somewhat catch up to the latest one in updateing capable devices and then move on forward. Also you have to look at the fact that they well you your S3, they make money. zthe already worked ICS onto it and were paid for ICS and the S3. when they have to develop and work on JB, Thats on their own money and time. But yeah, im getting off margin here. I belive that the s3 can probably see one more update after 4.2. after that, well it will be pointless as the GS5 may be in the horizon which aint bad. After my s3, ill probably go for the GS5 if im not too compelled by the note 3 lol

That is NOT the Stock OTA update. That is CM10
If that were the OTA Update, we'd say share the File with others , so we can MOD it to death!
Once the OTA update hits The east coast of USA or where ever it hits first, someone will upload the stock file! I herd it was suppost to hit Poland Dec 21, 2012
I just bought mine yesterday and the update was available when I get home with it.

I get the same battery life I did before.
Use BetterBatteryStats to determine what's the cause of bad battery life. I had problems when I first updated - found out it was Google Now trying to use GPS all the time for the most part. They really ought to tell people about that and make it more clear since many don't seem to realise what's going on.
I know that the eBay app is also a battery hog, but I can't part with it.
I'm happy to have JB...I was on ICS previous with the HTC One S (long story but good ending). My question with 4.1.2.....will it come with Photo Sphere camera app? I'm completely stock unrooted...not ever going to root...so don't even tell me to root please.

Haha this is comical good one... well from what I know 4.2 obviously international markets would get it first(maybe they already have it?) Maybe someone can chime in on this. Since these updates take so long I bet most carriers are just skipping 4.1.2 and go straight to 4.2 next year. Consider most US carriers just got 4.1 lol
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
The only devices that have 4.2 is Nexus devices at the moment. They always get stuff as soon as it is announced because they are pure google devices. 4.1.2 is incremental and the international Note 2 already has it. 4.2 is still some time away bro. I mean you can flash a CM10.1 ROM and that literally is 4.2, but it is missing all the Samsung packages. Samsung's actual 4.2 official release is still far off. Expect to see it leaked before the OTA hits.
My bad....I posted that very early in the morning....I confused 4.1.2 with 4.2. Still hope we get photo sphere at some point though. Never understand why carriers get rid of some features.

One of the best thing about custom roms is that you get all the goodies before the updates that sometimes come months later if at all.For me,when I flash a custom rom on my android device it finally becomes mine.Until then you are literally AT&T/Verizon's etc, etc, etc *****.With all that useless crap on your phone that is forced on you without a choice.I personally like to have full control over what is on my device especially because now a days these "toys" cost as much as my laptop.Again,my personal preference. If anything I would try to talk you into re-rooting.LOL
p.s I am running cleanRom and it is absolutely the bees knees.

Well...duh...did you honestly expect something better than what you had ? Did you suddenly expect a pushed update from AT&T to offer you a better experiance than those 3 custom roms ? Ease of updates...? I don't get it...Are you actually trying to say relying on a OTA update is easier than actually flashing a new update yourself ? Are you saying waiting and waiting and hoping you get a good ota download and it flashes properly for you..is better than being able to flash and being able to reflash if you actually need it ?
Sorry if I sound rude...but come on...get real would you...You knew the benifits going in and why you rooted it and flashed them..and now you want folks to paint a all rosey picture that a full blown unrooted phone is better than a rooted one running those 3 custom roms...Sorry...it ain't going to happen unless it is coming from someone who didn't install something correctly..or just perfers the bloat and limitations of a stock phone..
If you want & like the stock feel and look...flash Scott's AT&T special edition of his Clean rom..It's debloated..and he has linked to some theming for it..
If you want to go way beyond..wait for Truth's new one out later today or tommorrow..It's fully themed..debloated..has all the latest & greatest available..is fast..and everything works on it..What more could you want...
Personally...I won't ever run a stock phone on purpose after the allowable return time for it..Triangle away has removed the worry of returning it for service..and TWRP has made flashing anything a non issue as well..
It's your phone..run it the way you want to..and be happy..but please don't ask on a developers forum to be convinced to stay on a stock rom..that is just plain lame...IMHO
Mac
I know exactly what you mean and I did feel the same way. Samsung has done an amazing job with this phone. However I have used Jedi, miscoms international roms, cleanrom, now on cleanatt. I have found with a on a custom kernel either persus or the aslyum/note2core. As long as I undervolted and didn't over clock my battery life was a lot better than stock and phone was much quicker and responsive over stock and still had all the great features. We have some awesome devs here for roms and kernels. To me is a very hard choice on what rom to stay on as well as kernel. They are all amazing in there own ways and in my opinion all awesome. I hope no devs flame me I'm just saying they are all very intelligent people at this and I see great things in all there work. AS FOR NOW. I'm on Scotts dedicated at&T. I have took around 40 user and system apps that "I" consider bloat and running persus kernel with the profile zip of 2 offered. My battery life is insane. All day of heavy use and still about 70perecnt left after 8 hours or so. Hope I may have helped you or someone else. I love open source

I have been over clocked to 1800 and above on Jedi and pulled over 2 days off charger with over 8 hours screen time. If you want to stick with stock look, Clean Special build and definitely a kernel. They pull the debugging crap out, optimize voltages, etc. Kernel devs have been working magic...and finding bugs that Sammy, HTC, missed

Samsung Galaxy S® II (Sprint) Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Official Upgrade

Just came across this: Samsung has released the Jelly Bean update for the SPH-D710 phone. It is installed using the Simple Upgrade Tool available thru their site.
Samsung has released a new Android™ OS version for the Samsung Galaxy S® II (Sprint) (SPH-D710). Jelly Bean 4.1.2 software version GB27. Please follow the instructions below to download and install Simple Upgrade Tool using your Windows PC.
Unfortunately, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Epic 4G Touch is not available over the air, and those of you who want to download and install the software upgrade will have to do it through Samsung's site/software. It seems that the downloadable content is just too big to be pushed OTA, at least according to Sprint. If you ask me, I think that the carrier doesn’t want to bother with rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update over the air for the Epic 4G Touch because the phone was launched two years ago and it doesn’t seem to be a priority.
The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update van be downloaded and installed right away. In case you want for details about the matter, you can check out the Sprint support site HERE.
Title: Sprint_D710_GB27_JellyBean_SimpleUpgradeTool.exe

yhea buddy!!
Thanks for sharing
Tried installing followed directions and it got stuck in start up boot loop. Computer Odin into recovery, wiped all data flashed the previous rom was using as DD and now it shows Baseband Version heading GB27 and the rest of the builds from the rom. Not a total success so I can't say it worked or didn't just informing of my results.
Even though it says GB27 I just saw QBKing77 has uploaded Official Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean GB27 Update on Samsung Epic 4G Touch Review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1Bt55Ngass&feature=em-uploademail) to which my phone does not have these changes. But dont take my word on it lol.
Just noticed the OP says something about the reason this update is not OTA through Sprint because this device is "2 years old and is not a priority". This is not true. The reason the update is being pushed this way is because the entire internal SD is wiped to accommodate the differences in the partitions. A regular OTA simply can not achieve this. Hence the reason for a over the wire update.

Lmfao if this phone was not a priority we would have never gotten JB at all.....appreciate the share but dont agree with the last part

Maybe and kies update doesnt wipe internal sd card. I dont know abojt the size part but it certainly would be a pain if the ota zip is any thing larger than 400-500mb file.

So just tested on our demo phone (sprint corporate store) and nothing was wiped...what did they change between the leaks and now?
Also, auto brightness is broken even after hard reset, can anyone else confirm? Don't feel like tearing off our phones security just to triage the ambient light sensor

Auto brightness is flawless for me.

Auto brightness is broken for me. Anytime it is enabled, brightness is set to lowest. Any idea for a fix would be much appreciated. I used to use SwitchPro widget to control brightness, but dont need the brightness widget since its now built into notification.
I just installed the Jelly Bean update on my S2, mainly bc I just got the phone recently after I cracked the screen on my previous phone. I'm new to rooting, and just had a quick question to ask... I have already rooted my S2 and i've been looking through all the roms available, but are there any ROMs that can be used directly with 4.1.2 and the GB27 modem? Or do I need to downgrade to use any ROMs?
Thanks

You need to post questions in q&a(kennyglass, I can sense your presence!). But the answer to your question is yes, there are many ROMs that have 4.1.2 and in order to use a Jellybean ROM, you HAVE to have a jb modem. Look in android development for this phone lots of choices for 4.1.2. Read the OP correctly and flash away. Good luck!

GPS
Did this update cause GPS issues for anyone else? I installed this on my wife's phone and now she can't lock on generally. If she can lock on, then she loses navigation after a minute or two.
I saw another thread about GPS issues here. Is my only choice to fix it rooting? I root my own devices (my original Epic 4G and current GS3), but in general my wife likes her devices stock. The non final ROMS I ran and issues I had on occasion have led her to be resistant to the idea.

Try updating prl and profile then reboot and use the gps test app to get initial lock for a few minites and it will lock fast after that. Also you can be stock rooted dont need a rom. I keep going back to stock rooted, mostly get rid of sprint bloatware and run adblocker.
I see

I think there must be something physically wrong with her phone. I did the prl and profile updates, to no avail. I used qbking77 videos and rooted then installed a new ROM, flashing an ICS modem like they recommended, and it sees 0 satellites.
My intention now is to revert her back to the stock ICS and run it to a Sprint store and see if they can't be of any assistance. Does the S2 work like the S3 and count when/if you've flashed any custom roms?

It does if you flash with Odin. I'd run Triangle Away just to be on the safe side. Make sure you do it before you unroot however.

4.4 tw and tmobile - official discussion here

So from what am seeing seems like we are stuck once again..... Samsung keeps making it impossible for us to flash without using the new bootloaders.... Seems like the guys on the 9505 already made a Flashable for 4.4.2 leak but if you are not on their latest bootloader wifi doesn't work...... & You know tmobile won't be giving us this update till probably the s6 comes out lol

Any big difference between TW 4.3 vs TW 4.4.2 ?
I know that the 4.4.2 Google Edition Roms absolutely scream as far as real world performance goes. But somehow I doubt the TW 4.4.2 will offer a huge performance boost vs its earlier counterpart. Anyone have any insight into this?
@^ I recently checked some videos of the new kitkat update for the galaxy S4 on youtube and there isn't quite many changes. The only changes are some of the notification icons and also the settings now says 4.4.2, that's the only difference that I saw. There might be some performance boost on this update, but nothing really changed.

I believe u could activate Art instead of Delvik which is supposed to help a lot in performance..... dialer also searches from the Internet instead of just ur phone nothing 2 critical or worth losing any features over in my opinion

It performs pretty well actually and it also has some big features like the new location settings, tap and pay working out of the box, printing without a third party app and they revamped some lock screen settings, keyboard, and also now has AUTO high touch sensitivity so now it can actually sense when you're wearing gloves ( which I have tested and works great)
