Samsung Galaxy S® II (Sprint) Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Official Upgrade - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Just came across this: Samsung has released the Jelly Bean update for the SPH-D710 phone. It is installed using the Simple Upgrade Tool available thru their site.
Samsung has released a new Android™ OS version for the Samsung Galaxy S® II (Sprint) (SPH-D710). Jelly Bean 4.1.2 software version GB27. Please follow the instructions below to download and install Simple Upgrade Tool using your Windows PC.
Unfortunately, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Epic 4G Touch is not available over the air, and those of you who want to download and install the software upgrade will have to do it through Samsung's site/software. It seems that the downloadable content is just too big to be pushed OTA, at least according to Sprint. If you ask me, I think that the carrier doesn’t want to bother with rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update over the air for the Epic 4G Touch because the phone was launched two years ago and it doesn’t seem to be a priority.
The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update van be downloaded and installed right away. In case you want for details about the matter, you can check out the Sprint support site HERE.
Title: Sprint_D710_GB27_JellyBean_SimpleUpgradeTool.exe

This is like a more complicated odin one click .exe. I think.

yhea buddy!!
Thanks for sharing

Tried installing followed directions and it got stuck in start up boot loop. Computer Odin into recovery, wiped all data flashed the previous rom was using as DD and now it shows Baseband Version heading GB27 and the rest of the builds from the rom. Not a total success so I can't say it worked or didn't just informing of my results.
Even though it says GB27 I just saw QBKing77 has uploaded Official Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean GB27 Update on Samsung Epic 4G Touch Review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1Bt55Ngass&feature=em-uploademail) to which my phone does not have these changes. I think some are very cool but love running 4.2.2 and they way my phone is now.

It is. From what I've read a few users have had trouble booting after using this update method which they needed to boot into recovery and perform a factory reset.

woah
I havent seen this since the samsung moment days.
and later also using it on the transform. Those were fun.
if i remember correctly you can swap the tar file out with a dif tar and it should flash it like odin. well i guess in that sense it is Odin lol.
But dont take my word on it lol.

Just noticed the OP says something about the reason this update is not OTA through Sprint because this device is "2 years old and is not a priority". This is not true. The reason the update is being pushed this way is because the entire internal SD is wiped to accommodate the differences in the partitions. A regular OTA simply can not achieve this. Hence the reason for a over the wire update.

Lmfao if this phone was not a priority we would have never gotten JB at all.....appreciate the share but dont agree with the last part

Maybe and kies update doesnt wipe internal sd card. I dont know abojt the size part but it certainly would be a pain if the ota zip is any thing larger than 400-500mb file.

So just tested on our demo phone (sprint corporate store) and nothing was wiped...what did they change between the leaks and now?
Also, auto brightness is broken even after hard reset, can anyone else confirm? Don't feel like tearing off our phones security just to triage the ambient light sensor

Auto brightness is broken for me. Anytime it is enabled, brightness is set to lowest. Any idea for a fix would be much appreciated. I used to use SwitchPro widget to control brightness, but dont need the brightness widget since its now built into notification.

I just installed the Jelly Bean update on my S2, mainly bc I just got the phone recently after I cracked the screen on my previous phone. I'm new to rooting, and just had a quick question to ask... I have already rooted my S2 and i've been looking through all the roms available, but are there any ROMs that can be used directly with 4.1.2 and the GB27 modem? Or do I need to downgrade to use any ROMs?
Thanks

You need to post questions in q&a(kennyglass, I can sense your presence!). But the answer to your question is yes, there are many ROMs that have 4.1.2 and in order to use a Jellybean ROM, you HAVE to have a jb modem. Look in android development for this phone lots of choices for 4.1.2. Read the OP correctly and flash away. Good luck!

GPS
Did this update cause GPS issues for anyone else? I installed this on my wife's phone and now she can't lock on generally. If she can lock on, then she loses navigation after a minute or two.
I saw another thread about GPS issues here. Is my only choice to fix it rooting? I root my own devices (my original Epic 4G and current GS3), but in general my wife likes her devices stock. The non final ROMS I ran and issues I had on occasion have led her to be resistant to the idea.

Try updating prl and profile then reboot and use the gps test app to get initial lock for a few minites and it will lock fast after that. Also you can be stock rooted dont need a rom. I keep going back to stock rooted, mostly get rid of sprint bloatware and run adblocker.

I see

I think there must be something physically wrong with her phone. I did the prl and profile updates, to no avail. I used qbking77 videos and rooted then installed a new ROM, flashing an ICS modem like they recommended, and it sees 0 satellites.
My intention now is to revert her back to the stock ICS and run it to a Sprint store and see if they can't be of any assistance. Does the S2 work like the S3 and count when/if you've flashed any custom roms?

It does if you flash with Odin. I'd run Triangle Away just to be on the safe side. Make sure you do it before you unroot however.

[Q] Root my 2.3.6 or wait for ICS upgrade?

Hi all,
I'm still on the fence about rooting my t989 and so I'm looking for advice. I got the 2.3.6 update and I really want ICS but I'm willing to wait for it though. Also, I'm pretty conservative when it comes to risks such as rooting due to warranties, bricking, and losing functionality. However, I'll be traveling for a while and tethering could be handy and titanium backup has always been attractive to me. But what happens if ICS comes out? I think I loose root if I update OTA, but I should be able to get root again. I'm not a big fan of real 3rd party software because I don't want to work with bugs so if I got a new ROM, it may only be CM9 or similar as reliability is important to me. And then I don't want a new ROM if it doesn't use the Linux Kernel since Ubuntu is developing that OS to share that Kernel. Do I even need a new ROM? I think touchwiz is fine. Pages of apps are better than scrolling through them IMO.
So any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks!
Root it unless you plan on running stock ics. Chances are the ota will be releases here before it hits your phone we have a couple really nice ics roms right now. Don't know what your waiting for lol

Rooted mine several weeks ago. Tired of waiting for official ICS from T-Mobile and Samsung. Once the official version is released, the devs will have a rooted version available for flashing so you won't have to un-root.

+1. Its easy to unroot and return to stock if need be. Till then we have fully functional daily driver ics roms already so what are you waiting for? Take control of your device. That's why you went with android over iOS and wp7 in the first place anyway isnt it?

This is the thread i followed to root. Very simple instructions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 but yeah same method one has pics one dont.
Edit: Unrooting the phone is the same process as rooting except you flash a different file to the phone.
My suggestion is to root. But don't sweat CM9 it is pretty buggy right now because its still beta and isn't officially supported on our phones. But there are plenty of stable ICS roms now and even if u don't care for the few bugs that some may have, there are also some amazing GB rooms out there too.
Just my 2 cents.
Sent from my iced out to perfection GalaxyS2
But I don't NEED a new ROM do I? Doesn't it just change the GUI? Basically I just want tethering and freeze bloat apps and ads, but a battery life boost would be great. How much does it change under the hood to expand capability? From what I can tell, root apps are the only thing that expands features.
Root and install a rom... If you think your phone is good, with a rom you'll see your phone is just great
Sorry for all my questions but is the kernel held within the ROM? And whatever ROM I choose, I can just flash to different just like that huh? Like it's an easy process?
My brother has Juggernaut, it didn't look any different than touchwiz except for flashy little things like the screen turn off and stuff. I just need function, not flash.
Some roms com with their own kernels, like TDJ's ones... You can flash a rom and then change it for another, but you have to wipe your data for a clean install (there's always the option to backup your info)

Been out since about last Thursday, actually.
Hi, has anyone tested this on a Rogers phone? Someone confirmed that the 'LH2 version works with rogers (in another thread) but I just wanted to double check if this is the same ROM. Also do I need to do anything else to get it working on the Rogers network besides add the APN settings (modem files, etc)?
I'm doing this update for my dad's phone primarily to fix the data usage bug in the official GB rom and it would be nice to get him updated to ICS.

It will work on a Rogers device, but do keep in mind that the official LH2 build has many of the same problems as the leak, as well as one or two extras since it apparently doesn't do a full wipe first. Two major ones present in both ICS builds are a broken keyboard backlight and broken tethering, though there are fairly easy fixes here on the forums for both. The official build has problems with the phone app crashing if you have contacts on the phone other than google contacts, I believe.
Your best bet is to back up anything he has on the phone, convert all the contacts over to google contacts if he uses anything else, and do a factory wipe before updating. If he cares about tethering or the keyboard lights, you'll need to flash clockwork mod recovery after the update, and flash those two updates as well.

Awesome! Thanks for all the info. Yeah, I was reading about those issues and I was shocked that AT&T and/or Samsung would allow such major bugs through (especially the keyboard light bug). I wonder if people are complaining about these issues on the official AT&T forums. I'm just glad the XDA community is here to help
Is it safe to assume that AT&T didn't mess with the built-in ICS data usage tool?

At least, if you're coming from UCLG9. Don't know about GB builds. Honestly, I don't think Odin is smart enough for something like that, but I'm no expert.

My wife and I just upgraded to the Galaxy S III last Friday when Sam's Club had them for 96 cents (we couldn't pass up the deal). I have gone about as far as I want to on setting up the phone before I get the update. As I ran a none standard Epic 4G I never received software updates from Sprint. I need to root the S3 so that I can finish setting it up.

I'm unsure overall. And don't worry there's no chance it will already be mb1 lol. If new out of box, it will at a minimum be at LJ7. Ma6 and mb1 have been released in the last week. The phones in box left the factory months ago and haven't been updated since maybe in a few months the new in box phones will have the mb1 update so just get ready as if your LJ7 or a previous version.

Update to mb1 before rooting otherwise you will have to root all over again.
Root will work on mb1.
I used the team epic root process mentioned above.
In my case I was rooted with ma6. Got the ota update with stock recovery. Then had to re-root.

I really do not know. I went to MA6 from whatever was previous on my phone(4.1.1). then I rooted then next morning OTA MB1 and rerooted all in less than 48 hours. So i have really no way of knowing what changes were in between MA6 and MB1. There were some minor changes I noticed after updating to MA6.
Google Settings appeared in the App drawer. I think there were some keyboard modifications where there is a separate heptic feedback switch to turn on or off.
Other than that I think everything else was behind the scenes type stuff and bug fixes.
before buying on craigslist, request the ESN number and call up sprint to see if its clean. First thing you should do

Thanks guys. I already picked it up and its great. Everything seems to be working and I can't find a single scratch on it. He gave me a nice case too. Anywho, now that I have it I see I'm on LJ7. How are you guys updating the baseband? I updated PRL, Profile, and I checked for a firmware update but there was none. I am on stock recovery (for now...lol).

Ok, Settings /manage apps /all.
Scroll down to Google services framework. Force stop. Clear data.
Back out to settings. System update, update samsung software. Try a couple of times if necessary.

Just wanna make sure. Regardless of which baseband I'm on, any rom should work, right? Sprint roms of course. It's just that on the Note 2, some baseband versions wouldn't play nice with certain roms (cause errors, etc.). I'm seeing some roms in dev section saying, "based on ma5" or "based on ljc." Does that mean I HAVE to be on that baseband to flash that rom? Sorry for all the noobish questions but when you bounce around devices, you get confused

Samsung devices act the same. I suggest you read a whole lot more since your question reveals that you really have no idea what you are doing and a brick is in the future... I realize you're excited to play around, but the results of fapping with tissue paper and fapping with sand paper stem from more than just a simple word.

A brick is NOT in my future. Look I respect the fact that you've been around a while and have helped many out but just because I ask a noobish question doesn't mean I'm a noob. I've owned an OG Evo, a EVO 3d, the EVO 4g LTE, the galaxy nexus, the sg2, the gnote 2, and sg3 and many more I probably can't remember right now. I have been a "flashoholic" for quite a while, flashing roms, radios, mods, etc. I've even helped devs build flashable zips to install mods. I HAVE NEVER BRICKED A DEVICE. Maybe my question wasn't clear but it doesn't matter cuz I already updated my baseband to mb 1 and I've flashed several roms, all without incident. It seems to me that all roms work regardless of what baseband your on (as long as they are for the right device). I respect you and others on this forum and I just didn't appreciate the tone with which this came across.

ICS 4.0.4 Flashed to Verizon Prepaid; updating to JB bad idea??

I bought my phone already flashed to Verizon prepaid. It is currently on ICS 4.0.4 rooted stock build FH13. The guy who flashed it sold it to me and told me to never update it cuz it could destroy the flash. Is this true? Also, hot spot is working and i wouldn't want to lose that if i were to update. So should i just disable OTA update notifications with FOTAkill.apk and stay on 4.0.4?
When you update just change the APN for MMS. The flash should stay regardless of the ROM on the phone. Be sure to do a nandroid first. Also someone who has done a flash to another carrier can please chime in

Your correct . You are good to go. The update won't hurt your Verizon prepaid flash. Just change APN and your set. I'm able to jump around ROMs with no problem at all. Happy flashing!

DO NOT UPGRADE! If you're on PagePlus, the system WILL NOT RECOGNIZE YOUR PHONE. The place you bought it will charge you to re-flash it back to 4.0.4.
Just curious but how will flashing a new ROM in Odin or cwm make the system not recognize the phone? From what I can tell the "flash" was using the numbers from a donor phone. All the info used in the flash except the APN would all still be there after a new ROM flash. Can you not factory reset the phone after a flash to page plus as well? I would like to know what your info is. Because this is the first I have heard it.

I'm also curious about this as well. I have flashed many phones to various carriers and never had a problem with a upgrade.

Ok it looks like someone is saying it will be safe to update and someone else is saying that it is NOT safe to update. I cannot afford to lose the flash as I do not have access to a computer so I can't take the chance unless someone can absolutely positively for sure tell me that I will not lose my Verizon Prepaid flash.
If the Epic 4g Touch was made for Verizon I wouldnt be worried but being that its originally a Sprint phone I am having doubts. Isn't the OTA update designed for the Sprint Epic 4g Touch? If I do end up letting the OTA update install what version will I end up being on?

These people have done it. Maybe ask in there or pm them. I am leaning towards operator error for the person saying don't do it.

I use Verizon prepaid on my epic 4g and epic 4g touch. I have been able to Odin both phones and not loose any settings. I also was able to ota and install cwm and flash any cm10.1 build and everything worked. Text calls and 3g work. MMS doesnt work unless I change APN settings

If I do the OTA update, what version will I be on? And will foxfi or SVPT work on it?
Beezie I tried following tutorials all over google on getting my mms to work, but I cant get it to work on my native/built-in messaging app... Only way I can get MMS messages is by using GO SMS PRO app. Can I screenshot you my ##DATA# settings and let me know if i need to change any anything?

Well the update depends on which brand epic touch your on. (Sprint, Virgin Mobile, Boost) it will update you too jellybean either way just your modem will be different. I have a sprint brand.
Ya it is a pain to get MMS to work threw touchwiz without a 3rd party app of some sorts. I find it pretty easy on CM builds. I normally just ditch MMS and send the pic threw gmail cuz its less of a headache. But sure you can send me a screenshot of the settings. I'm willing to help as much as I can.

Okay three screenshots attached to this message. Thanks beezie
Interesting. I have the same settings saved on my computer for when I had touchwiz... This is what I was saying with having to use a 3rd party app and the headaches.
Have you considered jumping over to a cm10.1 build? MMS used to be a big issue for me until I realized what a pain it can be from phone to phone to upgrade etc. I'll flash over to stock tomarow after work and let you know if I can get it working right again. Sorry I can't be of more further help.

Im actually scared to flash my rom as i dont have access to a computer if it bricks. But i might if someone were to guarantee i wont lose root or flash AND i will still have wifi tethering capability. Im gonna do some research on the cm10.1 rom. Yea id appreciate it if you could help me out tomorrow. Thanks again man. Btw, does you're phone go into airplane mode every now n then? Mine does for about ten seconds then comes back on. It'll happen like maybe five times a day. Was wondering if that's normal. If not, is it something cm10.1 could fix?
Its not normal. There was a bunch of bugs in the ROM you are on. Being on that build though because its rooted you can use mobile Odin. To get the modem you would need to flash that in cwm though.

Yup patroa is correct. ICS builds for the epic touch were horrible. (In My Opinion) I wish I could give you a 100% guarantee that nothing could go wrong but there is always a small slight chance.
No its not normal for airplane mode to pop on from time to time.
I rooted and used mobile Odin to install a cwm and flashed a cm10.1 build all without a volume down button (can't easily get into download mode or at all) I was able to do it from a ICS build. The same build you are on.

What would you say the odds are of something going wrong? Like if you were to compare the amount of horror stories to the amount of success stories what the ratio look like? One bad scenario to one hundred successful ones?

Just follow directions to the letter. Almost all if not all issues in flashing ROMs are from not following directions close enough. You are already rooted so get mobile Odin from play store or here on xda download el26 or el29 kernel from the kernel repository DL the tar file flash in mobile Odin boot into recovery make backup wipe and flash the ROM of your choosing. There is a ton of awesome ones out there
