Hey Guys my Nexus is showing a weird behaviour, maybe you have an idea what to do?
When I got my GNexus (a month ago) is was as fast as everyones, I think. Of course I couldn't keep my fingers off rooting & flashing some ROMs. This is when the problem showed up..
After clean flashing some ROMs (fac reset, cache wipe, dalvik wipe), the phone got sooo slow, for example when I press the power button to turn on the screen, it takes like 15 seconds to show up. Opening the app drawer (the first time after boot) is also like 10 seconds. The internet (Wifi & 3g) is also incredibly slow. When I watch my processor's activity it is always pretty low, so I think this is caused by I/O (I think it's called like this.. the transfer of data to the storage and back). I know this problem from others as a bug when you got < 3 GB free on your SD-card, but mine is absolutely free (I also tried laying down my phone for a night, for the phone to scan media, no changes). The weird thing is that if I flash the google fac ROM via ToolKit, the problem is solved and I can flash a ROM again without too much decreasing of performance, but if I flash another one or update the phone becomes sluggish again. Hope I described my problem in a understandable way (bad english knowledge).
Just to summon up the things I tried:
- Dalvik clean
- Cache clean
- different ROMS
- clean & dirty flashs
- different kernels
- cleaning up System with SDMaid
- Empty SD card
- didn't restore Apps
- waitet for a night (8h should be enough for the scanner)
- SD boost
- there is no uncommon app eating my Battery
- Maybe things I don't remember..
Does anyone have an Idea? please don't answer with "Stay an Stock ROM", I got this answer on another (german) Site (I would post the link, but look at my posts), where another guy had the same problem without solution.
I hope this problem isn't already answered, I searched but didn't find it..
Thank you very much in advance for your answers

I've been on:
cm10 (4.1.2 & 4.2, currently)
aokp
cna
paranoid (4.1.2 & 4.2)(black & normal)
xylon (FNV 4.2)
XenonHD (4.1.2)
MoDaCo
AOSP (4.2 bigxie)
Liquidsmooth (4.1.2)
Android Revolution HD (4.1.2)
Slim Bean (4.1.2)
PACman
I don't remember the builds ;D
and maybe I should add that I'm a flashjunkie ;D
oh and I also had some kernels..
Stock (of course)
cm (of course )
Franco
LeanKernel
Popcorn
Trinity
I think it shouldn't be the ROM/Kernel..
Edit: Oh: and I don't know on which exactly it was worsest but it was on anyone I think.. atm I'm on euroskank's cm10.1 but is was really hard on the others, too but only if I didn't flash the factory image, before.
Before my GNex I had the Motorola Atrix for a year and I was flashing there, too, so I don't hink I'm a complete newbie (if you mind because of my number of posts)

Have you ever tried the super wipe script? It really simplified the wipe process and makes sure that you don't forget anything.

No.
Does the same exact thing as wiping in CWM/TWRP.
I haven't tried it, but I wiped several times, so if I forgot one time, I didn't forget the next time I also tried wiping cache / dalvik /cache+dalvik after first boot..
Clayne, I read all your post but I didn't read that you wiped the system partition. Are you wiping /system, /cache, /data, /dalvik?
Otherwise if not just wipe /system and it should resolve all your lag problems.

Again, no.
ROM.zips wipe system...it's the first script that is run.
The problem seems to be coming from a part of the storage that is been used by the system (because its becoming worse every time I flash), but that isn't wiped by factory-, cache- or dalvik wipe. But it IS wiped by flashing the factory image. Is there anything else than the SD-Storage? Maybe it's really the I/O? Jubakuba do you have an idea?
//edit: I just ran a benchmark (antutu) and the "Database IO" is at 35.. this seems to be a pretty small number isn't it?
any ideas?

Could be exactly the same storage problem with new GNex phones as reported by others although you have more than 3 gb free space. You may want to read the following threads, especially the last posts:

Yeah, after your new ROM is installed, go into the android system properties under storage and you'll notice that you're usb partition isn't completely empty, so erase all that. This way when you install gapps it's fresh.

Having to wait 5 minutes before I can edit or post is annoying....
I wanted to mention earlier to also make sure you're using the GAPPS version that was recommended with your ROM. You probably got the GAPPs from a link in the same thread where you got your ROM, but wanted to mention in it just in case you didn't.

Maybe you think I told him to wipe SD from twrp. Which is not something i said to do. Assuming he doesn't need to back anything up, what could it hurt to erase the usb storage from the storage properties?
I did it myself an hour ago after I installed JellyBean. I'm pretty sure you're wrong when you say its unnecessary. But either way, I wasn't going to take any chances with having some old shared resources screw up a fresh install.
Erasing usb storage and wiping your sdcard are one and the same a completely unecessary step. the only wipes you need to perform on a regular basis when changing a system is factory reset, cache, dalvik, and system unless there happens to be something wrong with the sdcard itself and Im pretty sure your wrong about it being a needed step someone correct me if Im wrong....

You are making several incorrect assumptions and using them as a basis for your suggestion. That's what makes it wrong. Although it is true that no real harm would be done by wiping out the /sdcard storage space, it is in fact unnecessary. Apps installed by the user get placed in /data along with all of their settings and other files they needs to operate. The /sdcard is used to store files like audio, video, books, etc. Wiping /sdcard before or after installing gapps won't make it any more "fresh" than it would be otherwise.
I've been around this forum for a while and you are the first one I can remember to advocate wiping /sdcard after a flash. While your suggestion for the OP to make sure the right gapps package for the ROM gets flashed is appropriate, I'm going to say you are off the mark with this one. It's not going to come into play when troubleshooting the youtube issue.
Please end this little side discussion as it's not pertinent to the OP.
EDIT: To the OP - I don't remember which ROM it was, but I thought I read about some video problems in one of these. Have you checked the thread to see if others are having similar problems?

Does any one here know if some of the Kernal cleanser zips from the s2 for TMO would work on the s3? If not are there any similar options?
Also is there a davlik wipe that works properly on the s3? Similar to the dark side zips. Cwm is not doing so correctly.

Don't use any from another device. Depending how its written it could brick you.

I have been using TWRP since I rooted my phone back in June, have not had 1 issue with it. Everything works flawlessly, I have flashed almost every AOKP, CM10, TW ICS & TW JB ROM out there thru TWRP and never lost my IMEI and the wipe functions in it work just fine. I usually wipe cache/delvik, system & factory reset 3 times. For me it seems to wipe pretty fast ( that's why I do it 3x ).Just to be safe.

Well isn't this normal since there is no external sd ext partition? I mean sure one could write a simple zip to delete /data/dalvik-cache.
And there really isn't a way to check it either. Cause I don't think adb works in recovery mode.

The Dalvik wipe in CWM works fine. It's very fast (just a few files), and the "error message" can be safely ignored. It's more like an informative message, not an error message. If you don't think it worked, just reboot your phone, and you will see that it did, infact, work.
There are still people going on about IMEI loss with CWM. First of all, you should have backed up your IMEI with su > reboot nvbackup in a terminal emulator. When your IMEI is 0, what happened was your nvdata got corrupted, so the backups were restored. Problem is you didn't make a backup, so those partitions contained nothing but dummy data, instead of the nvdata they are supposed to contain. It's been theorized that this is a screw up at the factory level. Easily rectified.
Last I checked, no one has figured out why this corruption happens. Flashing a nightly flashes the kernel and copies system files. Which means it can happen with either CWM or TWRP. I suspect the disparity in user bases, combined with the rarity of the problem, is why you don't see people complaining about IMEI loss with TWRP.
Kernel cleanser? You don't need one. Just flash a new kernel, it will overwrite the old one (it's a partition).
What problems have you heard about with TWRP? My complaints are mostly nitpicks, and I'm biased. It works fine. Make sure you're always using the latest versions, though.

Its actually not just a few files. Its quite some 60 megs depending how many apps you have installed
I made a dalvik cache wiper.
If you notice when you use CWM to clear dalvik cache, then reboot, it doesnt say android is upgrading at all. Making me think it doesnt work.
But when you just flash my script, it says its upgrading.
the zip is simple, all it does is delete_recursive("/data/dalvik-cache/") and thats it.

Obviously, it was an exaggeration.
After your report on dalvik wipe not working, I was inclined to try it myself, since I always wipe cache+dalvik when flashing a new rom. Wiping just dalvik, I was greeted with the optimizing apps prompt on the next boot.

So did i.. but it optimized the same amount of apps that the "wipe cache" option does. I seriously wonder now if they are one in the same. Like if they are coded to wipe /cache and /data/dalvik-cache. Cause when using my zip, i only optimize 58 apps.
Hi,
after wiping cache and Dalvik cache, *every time I reboot my phone* I keep getting the "Upgrade android: launching applications" error message...
How can I fix this?
Tx a lot.
If you do a normal reboot (ie/ without wiping dalvik and cache) do you still get this?.....I'm guessing probably not.
When you wipe dalvik and cache, you are clearing ALL the data for your installed apps.....the "upgrading android" message you are seeing is an indication that the apps are being re-updated and is a perfectly normal occurrence under these circumstances......not an error......
Please hit thanks if this helped

Unfortunately, as I wrote above, this happens EVERY TIME I reboot my phone, meaning normal reboot (not going into recovery mode and deleting anything, I just did that once!)....
Then some of your apps are not compatible with your rom or you just flashed a wrong .zip or something. I believe just wiping data and reflashing will fix this.

I think I'd have to agree.....it sounds like you have a problem with one of the apps and/or the ROM you have on your phone......depending on how deep the issue goes, you have two options.....
Option 1.......download "appbak" from the play store, use it to make a list of your installed apps then delete them. When you've done that, wipe cache and dalvik again (lol) and use appbak to do a fresh reinstall of all your apps........
If that doesn't work.......
Option 2.......
Wipe EVERYTHING, including your ROM, SD card, internal storage, cache and dalvik, and do a COMPLETELY "pristine" install.....if that doesn't sort it out, nothing will, and a trip to the service center is probably the only option.......

Yep, seems pretty interesting, the only thing that leaves me puzzled is that he's using kernel 2.6.35, not 3.x... does this mean he will have to do an entire different CM10 version later on, or will we be able to upgrade from CM10kernel2.6 to CM10kernel3.x?
Moreover, re my problem... If I want to install CM10 and get rid of this problem, I guess I'd do a full wipe... is this procedure correct?
cwm-> wipe data/factory reset
Cwm-> wipe cache
cwm->mount and storage -> format system. Format data. Format cache.
Install cm10alpha1.
Install gapps.
Thanks.
According to Arco, the reason he's sticking with v2.6 is because the camera works with it....on 3.0, it doesn't......yet....
He has said that he might try to integrate 3.0 into the build at a later date....when it's more stable.
In terms of wiping prior to installing '10....
All I've ever done before flashing a new ROM is wipe cache, dalvik and factory wipe/reset. If you want advice about anything more thorough, the best person to comment would be Pepoluan......he can guide you step by step to achieve the "pristine" result you want.....but yes, at the very least, you need to deal with cache, dalvik and factory reset......

I heard someone mentioning my name
To get a "Pristine" CM9, the steps are very simple, actually. BUT, you *need* a computer (laptop or desktop, doesn't matter).
1. Create a nandroid backup, just in case
2. Copy all important non-synced files from the internal storage & internal SD into the external SD
3. Backup your external SD into the computer
4. Format your SD. If you plan on using Link2SD, this would be a good time to also repartition it.
5. Copy the CM9 and GApps updatezips to the SD card.
6. Boot into CWM5/6 recovery, and wipe: cache, data, system, internal SD, battery stats.
7. Install the two updatezips (CM9 followed by GApps).
8. Reboot. Follow the initialization procedure.
9. If you want SD-Swapping, as soon as you arrived in the Trebuchet launcher, open Settings and configure SD-swapping.
10. DO NOT EVER restore any backups you made in GB, except messages and call logs. ALWAYS install apps fresh from the Play Store.
With a Pristine install, I *never* had any problems. And my phone's responsive enough I honestly no longer feel even the slightest desire to install any tweaks/mods/'engines'.

Good job mate...
Just one point....I noticed you mentioned creating a nandroid backup......there is a good chance that if you use that backup, the issue you had will return......

Yeah, I hope I'll not need it anyway!
Attached are three recovery flashable wiping tools I use when doing my work.
I find them to be incredibly useful tools that save some power button & volume rocker mashing, and time.
Wipe Cache and Dalvik - Wipes Cache and Dalvik (duh!)
Useful for:
-Flashing GApps
-Resolving app issues
Wipe Full - Wipes Cache, Dalvik, Data, and System
-Wipes just about all data except internal sd card
-Stops just short of a factory reset (does not wipe media)
-Useful for flashing ROMs within a type (e.g. going from one CM ROM to another CM ROM)
Wipe Full Factory Reset - Wipes Cache, Dalvik, Data, System, and internal sd card
-Useful when going from one ROM type to another (e.g. going from CM to TW)
_____________________
This is the part of the updater-script that selectively wipes /data in case anyone wants to add this to their ROM:
Code:
delete_recursive("/data/dalvik-cache");
delete_recursive("/data/app");
delete_recursive("/data/app-asec");
delete_recursive("/data/app-private");
delete_recursive("/data/backup");
delete_recursive("/data/data");
delete_recursive("/data/drm");
delete_recursive("/data/log");
delete_recursive("/data/misc");
delete_recursive("/data/property");
delete_recursive("/data/system");
delete_recursive("/data/time");
delete_recursive("/data/user");
Changing the code above to the code below effectively performs a factory reset
(look at /data/media and you will see your internal sd card)
Code:
delete_recursive("/data");
As Always - Flash at your own risk!
First! And am trying it* now

This would be nice as long as it doesn't do what the other wipe zips did posted awhile back....

I use these all the time. There should be no problems.
The only possible issue is that there are additional Sprint specific folders in /data that should be deleted as well to complete the wiping process.
What happened with the other wipe zips?
Um read the post and the part where it says wipe everything except internal sd......does this mean it'll wipe external sd as well or not?
Also does this wipes Sprint specific files and if it does what's the repercussion?

Full Wipe is just like a factory reset, except it does not wipe your internal sd card. And like a factory reset, this will not wipe your external sd card. As shown in the OP it only wipes files in /data.
The repercussions are effectively the same as a factory reset you would perform in recovery.
I added a full wipe with factory reset zip to the OP and updated the post to reflect the changes.

There was a previous mod created by someone who just kind of copied and pasted and the wipe actually wiped some serious items that caused the phone to brick. I don't remember what it actually wiped (partition I think) but it was very important to the phone, it was eventually fixed but there were a lot of angry people with shiny new paperweights instead of phones.

Hopefully one of the local devs that you guys trust will stop by and give these zips the all clear.
Otherwise you will be without some handy tools.
Can any dev's confirm, yet

You already tried them when you flashed CSROM.
Cool, then I can say it works great!
Thank you!

I just wanted to confirm that when I was switching from Paranoid Android (CM10 based ROM) to Galaxy S fre3 2.34d (TW based ROM), I was left with about 2.5GB of internal space because the wipe options in recovery were not wiping properly.
I successfully used the factory reset zip and then flashed a new ROM and now have 11.65GB available on internal storage.
THANKS OP!
Thanks to the OP for his work. Now, stupid "user who doesn't know anything" question;
Some instructions and videos say to use the "format" function (e.g.; format system format cache, etc)
In the command code: what is different between a "wipe" and a "format"?

Just what i needed, it works flawlessly
I was running a CM M1 nightly and wanted to update I used the wrote and factory reset zip and it wiped my entire internal memory...
I'm not sure why this happened I used this zip before without issue but it sucked getting phone restored and trying to in delete at least pictures on the phone.
I noticed that the least couple of nightlies is creating a folder called 0 and moving all directories there. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.
I just wanted to share not complaining. Thanks! :beer:

Sorry you lost your files.
The factory reset zip does perform a factory reset. That is what it is supposed to do.
Are you sure you didn't use the full wipe before?
I always store my important stuff on my external sd card so this can't happen. I also keep the factory reset zip in a separate folder so I can't use it by accident (I've done that before).
And yes, the CM 10.1 ROMs will create the "0" folder (which is for profiles) and will also usually create new (often multiple) sdcard0 folders.
I recently rooted my Galaxy Nexus and flashed AOKP. everything was all good and stable, but now the phone will lag really bad and sometimes reboot.
I tried to install a new ROM, but it still does the same thing, even with no apps installed.
It's really bothering me... what could be the problem?
Did you do a clean flash?
factory reset
wipe cache
wipe data
wipe dalvik cahce
format system
flash .zip
fix permissions
This also happened to me, even after a factory reset the phone was still laggy and buggy.
If WiredPirate suggestion doesn't fix it, i recommend a total wipe of the phone through the ToolKit, restoring it like just bought. I know it's kind of a rude fix, but this worked for me

Cool. Doing the factory stuff worked... Can I reflash a ROM now? I really hate stock lol. Just don't mess it up, right?

You should do WiredPirate's steps each time you flash a difference ROM or Kernel. If you do that, and educate yourself on each particular ROM/Kernel very well prior to flashing in case there are any specific extra steps you should take, then there is very little risk of messing up your phone.
In the off chance something goes wrong, the Galaxy Nexus has one of the most active development communities. Whatever problem you encounter, someone else has probably already solved it and posted a fix on XDA.
As long as you're intelligent and patient you'll be fine. READ before you flash.
And here's a nice resource if you do end up shopping around for ROMs and Kernels:
