Specific Scenario:
I miss a phone call while my data is disabled in standby and wake up to a dying battery due to a wakelock from Handcent trying to download the MMS portion of a Voice to Text message. (rogers alternative method to visual voice mail) I am pretty sure it also happens with the usual picture messages too.
***Note: regular Handcent SMS is not an issue.
Wakelock:
Opening Bettery Battery Stats and clicking the refresh button continually shows that Handcent is trying so hard to download the MMS and NEVER STOPS thus draing battery. Note that it received the SMS portion and is trying to download the attachment which is MMS.
Setup:
- Handcent SMS (4.6.2)
- Green Power...I use this to turn off data/wifi in standby but I can replicate the issue without this app by simply turning wifi/data off.
- Stock Messaging app ICS 4.0.4.....FROZEN with Titanium Backup
- Handcent options..../settings/application settings/default messaging application....is set to "all(sms & mms)
- 4.5 hours of testing
Workaround:
- defrosted stock messaging app and disabled it's notifications (to stop duplicates)
- in Handcent "default messaging application", I chose only SMS.
- of course, all notifications are enabled in Handcent.
RESULT of workaround:
The default messaging system for ICS handles the MMS portion...and in Better Battery Stats, it lists MMS CONNECTIVITY as the module that tries to download the MMS but it is set to time out at 20secs. So, you end up with only a 20sec wakelock when the system handles things.:good:
Conclusion:
I have written an email to Handcent Support. I would bet with so many S3 handsets sold, and so many Handcent users, there are bound to be more users out there who get a similar wakelock and DON'T EVEN KNOW IT. But, I am aware, that THIS ISSUE is specific, to those who receive an SMS/MMS when they don't not have a DATA connection whether it's due to poor signal, or purposeful battery saving tactics using apps like Green Power or Juice Defender. Note, that by using Green Power in standby to turn off data/wifi...I go from 1.5% per hour battery drain, to .5% or less.

I've searched around for this issue and haven't quite found the same issue or a fix... My phone doesn't notify me when I get an MMS. SMS works normal - screen turns on, shows preview of message, LED light blinks, and I have a counter on the lock screen showing how many messages there are. Email and missed calls work fine too.
But when I get a picture message, the phone doesn't light up, no counter on lock screen, no LED - basically no indication that I got a picture. Until I open up the messages app and see the thread with unread messages. If i get a normal SMS sometime after the MMS, the lock screen counter has the total number of unread messages (SMS + MMS), but no other indication of a missed MMS before that. Same thing happens when I get group messages (i.e., from iPhone users), although they do sort correctly into a group thread.
Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere? I've looked all over the settings in the phone and messages app. I have Go SMS installed for emojis and better group messaging, but I have all of its notifications off and the stock messages app set to default for receiving. Is there something else in there?
Running CleanROM 4.7 (although I've been having this issue for at least the past couple iterations of CleanROM).
Thanks for any help offered.
So I've had my 5x for a week now and I've been noticing that sometimes I don't get a notification from the Messenger app when I get a new SMS. I am unable to reliably repeat this issue but it seems to happen as a cluster, that is to say, for a period of time, no SMS notifications come through, and then things go back to normal.
I have explored Do Not Disturb settings, and under 'Priority only allows...' I've set Messages to "From Anyone", and automatic rules foe DND are all off. Under 'App Notifications' I have given Messenger app priority. Under Battery->Battery Optimization I have disabled optimization in the Messenger app.
Are there any other settings I'm missing that could help?
Is anyone else experiencing strange notification behavior with Marshmallow?
Thanks,
John
Bump
Me too, I'm having a lot of erratic notification behavior. I have to keep checking WhatsApp and WeChat and discover I have instead messages I wasn't notified of. I've had Greenify installed and it seems to have been causing other problems, so I just not uninstalled it entirely and we'll see if that's any help.
Whether I was on MIUI or Pie ROMs like Pixel Experience, Liquid Remix, ArrowOS or AOSIP, GMail push notifications don't work reliably when the screen is off. Sometimes it takes 10-30 minutes for them to arrive.
I read that this might be related to Doze and Google Cloud Messaging, but there doesn't seem to be a fix (Battery Optimisation-->Not Optimised doesn't work). Has anyone else experienced this?
Here's a quote from someone on Reddit
This has been happening since Marshmallow, and it's caused by Dose.
There is no fix. Some people suggest disabling battery optimization under battery settings or even whitelisting Gmail under do not disturb setting, but these don't work.
The reason Gmail stops receiving notifications when under Doze is because Gmail notifications are normal priority GCM (Google Cloud Messaging) notifications. All normal priority GCM notifications are put in a queue when Doze is enabled and are only received once the phone exists Doze.
Only high priority GCM notifications are received during Doze, and these notifications are reversed for instant messaging apps, like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Also, the GCM priority level is set by the app developer and can't be changed by the user.

Has this issue happened to anyone else?
Hello all,
I have recently come back to Android from iPhone.
I am having delayed push notifications specifically from my Reolink wireless security camera.
Currently working with Reolink Support and have tried the following with no luck:
Solution: Please avoid turning on the Battery Saver Mode when using Reolink App.
Solution: Go to Apps -> Configure apps -> Battery optimization -> All apps, and then disable battery optimization for the Reolink App.
Solution: Please avoid closing the Reolink App or lock the Reolink App before closing the background process.
Solution: Use the Push Notifications Fixer app. <-Set to 5 minutes (recomended).
My notifications are coming in about 10-15 minutes late, which is not very helpful for security camera.
Any suggestions would be Greatly Appreciated !!!
Thanks.
i did observe same in gmail push !
I got pixel phone + gsuite payed gmail
notification was about 6-15min delay when phone was in deep sleep
I can confirmed that on iphone was wroking. properly , in time .
I get delays sometimes with Whatsapp, ebay, and paypal apps.
What frustrates me sometimes is that my Galaxy Watch sometimes stops notifications for the Samsung Email app (used for work email). Notification will show on the phone, but appears sometimes instant, sometimes delayed 5 mins, or never at all. Reboot of phone and watch does not fix it, i have to turn off the notification in Galaxy Wearable app, reboot, and re-add the notification.
I have Battery Management set to High Performance, as i do not want apps put to sleep etc.
Hi there,
It looks like my phone is not "working" when in idle. For example, I need to open my Gmail app to update my email. When I get a sound notification for a supposedly new email, it's usually a 1 or 2 hours email.
Is there a setting I changed by mistake? Do you guys encounter this issue?
Thx guys
MIUI has quite aggressive doze by default, but it doesn't impact Gmail for me. Some apps might need toggling these settings:
1. enable autostart in app info
2. lock app in memory in recents screen
3. disable battery optimization in app info
But I would suspect that you have enabled Battery saver function - make sure that it's off (search for it in system settings).
Hi,
Gmail app is not listed in the menu where I can adjust the way the battery acts with it
And no, my battery saver is not activated
Still digging... if I don't reply back in several days, I may be completely lost into my hole
