Delayed GMail Notifications (caused by Doze?) - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

Whether I was on MIUI or Pie ROMs like Pixel Experience, Liquid Remix, ArrowOS or AOSIP, GMail push notifications don't work reliably when the screen is off. Sometimes it takes 10-30 minutes for them to arrive.
I read that this might be related to Doze and Google Cloud Messaging, but there doesn't seem to be a fix (Battery Optimisation-->Not Optimised doesn't work). Has anyone else experienced this?
Here's a quote from someone on Reddit
This has been happening since Marshmallow, and it's caused by Dose.
There is no fix. Some people suggest disabling battery optimization under battery settings or even whitelisting Gmail under do not disturb setting, but these don't work.
The reason Gmail stops receiving notifications when under Doze is because Gmail notifications are normal priority GCM (Google Cloud Messaging) notifications. All normal priority GCM notifications are put in a queue when Doze is enabled and are only received once the phone exists Doze.
Only high priority GCM notifications are received during Doze, and these notifications are reversed for instant messaging apps, like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Also, the GCM priority level is set by the app developer and can't be changed by the user.

Missing SMS Notifications

So I've had my 5x for a week now and I've been noticing that sometimes I don't get a notification from the Messenger app when I get a new SMS. I am unable to reliably repeat this issue but it seems to happen as a cluster, that is to say, for a period of time, no SMS notifications come through, and then things go back to normal.
I have explored Do Not Disturb settings, and under 'Priority only allows...' I've set Messages to "From Anyone", and automatic rules foe DND are all off. Under 'App Notifications' I have given Messenger app priority. Under Battery->Battery Optimization I have disabled optimization in the Messenger app.
Are there any other settings I'm missing that could help?
Is anyone else experiencing strange notification behavior with Marshmallow?
Thanks,
John
Bump
Me too, I'm having a lot of erratic notification behavior. I have to keep checking WhatsApp and WeChat and discover I have instead messages I wasn't notified of. I've had Greenify installed and it seems to have been causing other problems, so I just not uninstalled it entirely and we'll see if that's any help.

Push notifications not working

Is anyone experiencing push notifications not working? I'm not getting any notifications such as YouTube, Amazon, etc...I set the apps to battery not optimized thinking that would work. I don't know if messenger work with sms as I've been using another phone as my daily driver. What could be wrong? Thanks.

If your talking about something that the phone post to light up when you get some kind of notification, i don't get it either, that can be a bug with Asus, so you may need to bring it up to them when you can (Zentalk website). There is a work around for it, if you look for Screen Notification on google play, that should hopefully help with your problem.

No, I'm not getting the notification at all. Let's say there's a new video on YouTube for someone I subscribe to, I'm not getting the notification that it even happened, yet I have notifications on. For instance with Amazon, when an item is shipped, a notification is "pushed" to the device saying the item has shipped. All these notifications would be located in the top left just don't come. My settings have notifications active so I'm not getting what's wrong.
Could you have enabled dnd mode by accident? Or silent hours? Or blocked the notifications (settings -> apps -> notifications in specific app)?
No issues with GCM, push notifications or regular notifications whatsoever here.

Do not disturb mode is off and the specific apps have notifications turned on. The only push notifications that work so far is Yahoo mail.
I figured it out. It was the auto start manager that was preventing the notifications.

VERY buggy Notifications

Recently purchased the s9 (GM-G960F). However, I've noticed that the notifications are really buggy. I don't receive ANY notifications for my Gmail, Instagram sometimes works but when it does, 80% of the time it only vibrates with no sound. With WhatsApp, I only receive notifications for every 10 or so messages, and most of the time it only vibrates.
Twitter, WhatsApp and Instagram are unmonitored from the battery
All notifications are on and set to urgent (so I get sound and pop up on the screen)
Notification sound is set to "skyline" (default notification sound)
I've tried using other notification sounds but no luck
I've looked in advanced notifications and I can't find anything wrong
Reset phone twice and still nothing
I've cleared the cache a number of times for each app that notifications don't work
Any help?

Thanks, I installed it this morning. However, there is no difference. Notifications are still buggy
Check that you didn't enable any battery saving feature or install any on your phone including those that stops applications from accessing the internet or updating in the background. Also check the status bar in the settings, "Show Recent Notifications Only" should be turned off.

I've checked and no battery saving features are activated for WhatsApp, Twitter and Instagram. (I've even turned off the save data feature in Instagram and Twitter), As for Gmail, nothing shows in the battery settings to unmonitor it.
Show recent notifications is off (it's one of the first things I did when I set up the phone)
My current Apps that I have installed are:
WhatsApp
Instagram
Twitter
Google Authenticator
Spotify
Snapseed
The rest of the apps came pre-installed on the device (Youtube, Gmail, Drive, Maps...)
I've started to uninstall one by one the Apps i've installed to see if it fixes it. So far I've tried Spotify and Instagram, but no fixes were made.
I've even gone into recovery mode and cleared the whole cache.

Ambient Display

I have already read a lot about the various issues concerning notifications in the status bar. However, I am as of yet still missing a discussion on notification issues with the ambient display of the MI 9 SE.
I am experiencing that MIUI standard apps (like the Xiaomi messaging app) are able to shoe notifications on the ambient display. However, all non-standard apps (like Telegram, Slack or Email apps) are not able to do so. Has anyone observed differntent behaviour? Any suggestions on workarounds for this? Anybody already tried the beta and is the notification bug of the ambient display corrected there?
I see gmail, whatsapp...(mostly because i use them alot) but I am also missing some notifications of certain apps. Try to change their android notification settings and turn evertything on, and check if that makes a difference.

Notifications in MB4 get removed automatically

When i receive notifications in my phone they also get pushed to my MB4. When i open to see my new messages in my phone for example viber, the notifications in MB4 are cleared automatically. This behaviour also clears all the notifications including reminders and other, resulting in losing my reminders for the day.
Why is that?
I would expect band to show only active notifications, anything dismissed on the phone should be cleared on the band too. If band clears also active notifications, it might be a bug and you can report it from Mi Fit to get it addressed. Also you could try playing with Notify & Fitness app, it offers many options for notifications customisation, maybe it'll fulfil your needs.
