I've searched around for this issue and haven't quite found the same issue or a fix... My phone doesn't notify me when I get an MMS. SMS works normal - screen turns on, shows preview of message, LED light blinks, and I have a counter on the lock screen showing how many messages there are. Email and missed calls work fine too.
But when I get a picture message, the phone doesn't light up, no counter on lock screen, no LED - basically no indication that I got a picture. Until I open up the messages app and see the thread with unread messages. If i get a normal SMS sometime after the MMS, the lock screen counter has the total number of unread messages (SMS + MMS), but no other indication of a missed MMS before that. Same thing happens when I get group messages (i.e., from iPhone users), although they do sort correctly into a group thread.
Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere? I've looked all over the settings in the phone and messages app. I have Go SMS installed for emojis and better group messaging, but I have all of its notifications off and the stock messages app set to default for receiving. Is there something else in there?
Running CleanROM 4.7 (although I've been having this issue for at least the past couple iterations of CleanROM).
Thanks for any help offered.

Hi All,
Just upgraded with the AT&T release of WM6. Everything works well though the phone has done a few quirky things like locking up on the unlock screen and once setting off the vibrate notification and never stopping.
Two questions though.
1. The Messaging app periodically checks for mail and then vibrates the phone and pops up a notification telling me I have x unread messages. I KNOW that I have unread messages and have not chosen to read them but I get a new notification every time it checks to see if there are new messages regardless of whether any new ones came in or not.
Can the notification be stopped without shutting off all notifications from other apps?
2. Every time I turn the screen off, when I turn it back on whatever app I had running has gone to the background and the phone has shifted to the today screen. Can this be stopped? I want it to be whereever I left it. I have searched but cannot find an option for that behavior.
I have to say that the Bluetooth stack works SOOO much better than did the one in WM5. And I love that Messaging now supports HTML. Profimail stopped working with html links in messages from yahoo news and it was getting annoying that I could not go to the full article if I wanted to read more.
I hope this is a new question, I did search and didnt find anything in excalibur. I have kavana rom 6.1 with sliding pannels home screen and threaded text messages. the problem is if I get more than one text or a text and an Email, then only read one, that leaves me with one unread message. but when I go back to the home screen it shows that I have no new messages. even showing no messages I get the 15 min reminder and have to go through each folder to find the unread message. This only hapens if I leave the home screen and go to messages and back to home screen. new messages do show up on the home screen when they arrive. but not after leaving one in any folder (email, mms, sms)

The notifications on sms, email, and mms dissapear when you open the folder, even if you have 2 new text messages, but only read one, and go back to homescreen , it will show no text messages on the homescreen. Same with email and mms, the moment you open the folder(email, mms, sms) and go back to homescreen, it will clear the notifications.

It appears to clear the notifications but if I leave one unread it still alerts me every 15 mins. The first time it happend it took me a while to figure out why i was getting the 15 min reminder.
also if you power off and back on while I have a message, it shows the new message icon at the top (envelope) but no messages in the sliding home screen.
My TP2 has developed a problem where it doesn't beep when I get SMS or email messages, and the first I know is when I look at the phone and see the notification icons on the TF3D bar.
I have the tones turned on under settings>sounds and notifications>notifications. The event new text message has an alert, and I have tested the sound which does work, but it just doesn't seem to play when I get a new message, nor for emails.
Make sure "Notifications (alarms, reminders)" is checked in sounds & notifications setting panel.
Same problem with Windows Live mail... SMS and other email seems to work...
yes, i have checked that and it definitely is checked. any other suggestions anyone?
Do you use an application called Gyrator by any chance? I had this exact same issue with my SMS / email tones. Try quitting/disabling Gyrator and see if it has any effect in your case.
I've had the same problem since day 1 with my TP2. I configured my email accounts and they've never managed to play a notification. SMS works fine, but emails don't. I have 4 email accounts and have to continually check for the flashing green notification light.
I've settled on waiting to see if any 3rd party ROMs solve it, following release of HardSPL (it's an exciting wait!).
Oddly enough I seem to have the same issue with another screen rotator app called changeScreen. I wonder what it is that causes these screen rotator applications to disable the alert tone for both SMS and e-mails? I do get the blinking led though...

It's wrong to assume screen rotation software is affecting the notifications. I had the problem before installing such software.
Incidentally, since my problem was confined to email notifications, I've installed a workaround in the form of GudenSoft's 'Email Scheduler'. When using that software, my email notification sounds are working just fine.
Here it is if anyone else wants to try it - http://www.gudensoft.com/emailscheduler/
yes, I do have Gyrator 2 installed, but I don't think that is the problem. I exited the application and sent myself a couple of texts from another phone and it still didn't give me an alert.
Oh well I think it is hard reset time. I'll install things one by one and try to find what causes my problem and let you know my findings!
I recently switched from an S4 to a Note 4, and have been missing lots of incoming SMS messages. I realize now that the S4 would beep any time a new message arrived, but the Note 4 suppresses notifications when you're inside the conversation for which a new message arrives. I can kind of see the logic for this - why would one need the phone to beep if you're already on the screen that's showing you the incoming message? In practice, though, I find that I leave the conversation screen open all the time when I'm not looking at the phone.
Most frequently, I keep the phone on a dock at my desk, hooked up to my KVM switch, so I can use my keyboard/mouse to write messages during the day. After sending a message, I switch back to my main computer/monitor and work over there until the phone beeps at me again. I rely on the SMS notifications to grab my attention, but need to explicitly exit the conversation after sending each message now if I want the beep to occur. The same thing happens when I put the phone in my pocket, holster, on the counter, etc. after sending an SMS. I'm sure I'll develop a habit after a while, but it seems foolish to me that I can't just stay in a conversation and have it beep whenever there's activity. This is the only email/IM/SMS app that I have that behaves this way.
I've tried to force the Messages app to beep at me whenever an SMS arrives, but there doesn't appear to be an option for this. Hopefully, I've just overlooked it, so:
QUESTION: Is there a way to configure the Messages app to beep whenever an SMS arrives, even if I'm already inside the conversation for the new message?
I'm using the stock ROM, no root, the default Messages app that comes on the phone, and a built-in notification sound (i.e. not something custom from the external SD card). Vanilla configuration. Thanks for your help.

In phone app go to settings - call - call alerts . There is option to alert you on notifications. Make sure you have this check.

Just to clarify, when I say "conversation", I mean that I'm reading an SMS thread inside the Messages app - not having a verbal conversation in the Phone app. Assuming that this is understood...
In the "Call alerts" page, I see several settings. Mine are configured as follows (where "+" is checked, and "-" is unchecked):
CALL VIBRATIONS
+ Vibrate when answered
+ Call-end vibration
CALL STATUS TONES
+ Call connect tone
- Minute Minder
+ Call end tone
ALERTS ON CALL
+ Notify during calls
Under the configuration above, would you expect the Messages app to beep when an SMS arrives on the thread that I'm currently reading?

Now i'm not sure. i need to see if in scenario you talking about i have notification, if i do i will explain my settings.
EDIT:
OK. I have notification. In settings in default messenger i have in notification Notification sound ( choose as you wish)
Vibrate +
Repeat message alert ( I got every 10 Min)
Pop-up display +
Lock Screen +
Status Bar +
What im reading messages i got pop-up with sound on top of message app.
But when im reading message and i get message from same person i don't have sound notification. It must be setup by software this way.
Did you find a fix? Mine does the same thing.

I'm still getting the same behavior. Missed several messages yesterday, in fact. This is the first thing I check after every OS update from AT&T, but I guess most people continue to prefer to not be notified when their text messages arrive.
If my screen is on while I'm in a conversation, you're correct, no notification will occur. But if my screen times out (locks) I will get a notification tone. I guess it just assumes you are looking at the screen if it's on and a message comes in.
Not aware of any way to change this.

I think that that's probably the intent. Maybe my habits are different than others', but I'm frequently not looking at the phone when the Messages app is up. Actually, before getting the Note 4 and training myself to switch off of Messages after reading each new text, I predominantly wasn't looking at the screen while Messages was up.
There's probably no one-size-fits-all setting here. It's just too bad that there's not an option to enable/disable audible notifications to fit individual preferences.
Did anyone ever find a way around this? You figure someone would have made an xposed module or something.
What a response.
Your response sounds like We should all be alike and conform.
Text notifications
Try '8sms' ... only text messaging app that I've found that will consistently notify me of incoming texts. Some apps will for a time but then stop doing so. This one has worked well for me.
My phone used to display incoming texts over the lockscreen (using Textra and Chomp) but for some reason this has stopped. Now the text will only show for a few seconds or not at all. Anyone have these issues and have a fix? My phone is not rooted and is stock.
