There are so many ROMs around, and despite my best efforts, I'm not in touch with pros and cons of every ROM. And on top if that there are kangs, ROMs that are basically just themes/mods etc...
Would anyone be interested in an actively maintained thread/poll dedicated to listing the best features of the various ROMs? The poll can serve to show popularity and the OP can be updated now and then to list the ROMs and their pros and cons. This will also solve the newbie problem of "HAI WHICH ROM IS DA BEST?"
Thoughts and comments? Also, mods please delete/move the thread if there's something similar or this is the wrong place for this thread.

no correct thread sir and answer to another listing of thread would simply be no because xda development encouages you to know what your getting into nobody will tell you all the pros and cons you find out by searching the thread and flashing the rom/mod/theme etc thats where the fun is

That's the problem I have with all this, too much onus on the individual. I understand the "fun" element of flashing ROMs and exploring, but there are times when I just want to flash it and get on with life. It would be really nice to know if feature <X> works pre-flashing, before I spend time with a 200meg download, backup, nandroid, wipe, flash, restore apps/settings/launcher. And in so many threads if you ask a question, people just go OMGWTFBBQ WHY DONT YOU SEARCH???
The CM10 thead has 851 pages as of this posting, what exactly should someone search for when looking for pros and cos? Not to mention, thanks to the nightlies format, stuff that's valid on page 450 is probably incorrect as of page 820. In fact, there's an interesting discussion going on right now whether CM is feature rich, thus great - or bare bones AOSP and therefore awesome.
Oh well, it was a thought I had. If no one's interested, no problem.

I sorta hate when I see someone talk about kangs and ROMs, you do know where the term "kang" came from, and what it really refers too, its really code used for profit when its free. Im serious. So when you say a ROM is kanged, your wrong. There are really only 2 ROMs for us on this phone, stock TW, and AOSP(in the form of cm), and then you have the variance of those (AOKP, MIUI, and modded TW, deodexed, hybrid)
So your really saying anyone that makes a TW ROM has kanged something, and its better to just have one dev, make one modded TW ROM, and call it done, great thinking man
But on a serious note, run modded TW, AOSP, or kang one for yourself, and maybe share your thoughts in that thread with your fellow community...

To start off.. as if its not obvious enough (if this isnt dev thread worthy) Im an xda forum noob. But familiar with roms and kernels etc.
I have #0004 hardware, white, Evo. Flashed warm twopointtwo RLS5, which is my favorite so far. Ive tried manymanymany kernels and yet no camera (i open camera app and i get just a black screen). All kingx kernels past #7. Netarchy more aggressive v7 and ziggy kernels and more. Ziggy and stock are the only ones that have working cameras... but suck up battery..
Are there any camera fixes, or ROMS as fast as kingx that should fix my problem
p.s. dont tell me i need to wipe my caches, ive tried that...
cauk's format all.zip or whatever doesnt work.

Jesus just help the man out, rather than being counterproductive and just flaming him for posting in the wrong area.
As for the issue, search up some ROMS where people are reporting camera to work for hardware #0004.

i think it IS worthy of this category considering it needs developement level help, and the answer isnt anywhere else. but there are always haters.
questions are meant for the Questions section. simple as that. people just cant seem to grasp that concept.

Again, this isnt a question section nor a discussion section. It is a section meant for developers to post their work.
If you do have a question about someone's work, ask it in the corresponding thread, not create a whole new one to clutter the forums.
I consider this less clutter considering it came from a thread of almost 4 thousand pages. And I was unaware that this was just for posting work, hard to tell since it isn't labeled such. So if this really isn't going anywhere. Let this post be deleted -_-

It still shouldn't go here. But from his post he obviously wasn't sure. So just help him and move the thread.
dude... you need a kernel based off htc 15. thats why all the nets sbc v7's (which are built on older kernels) dont work. flash one of net's newest (4.3+) kernels or stock htc 15 and dont post in the wrong section.
I have posted in the wrong thread before myself. Its amazing how many people are waiting to flame someone for it.
If flashing a different kernel doesn't work you can try flashing this. Just make sure you backup first.
Myn's RL5 actually comes with htc kernel #15, did that kernel not work for you?
There were a few people with 004 models having issues with VirusZ rom and the 004 cam fix solved their issues.
aha. this thread adds nothing to the development community. It belongs in his thread or q&a.
Try the camera fix posted by calk.
I just tried netarchys most recent kernel (as a flamer suggested) which works.. and now I'm baffled as to why nothing else works including kingxs latest... and BTW, it did work on 15, but there were so many problems with it i couldn't use it

As a last comment before I let this thread die, by letting flamers flame, and moderators moderate. How about you folks not complain about posts like mine and instead, You rally for a subtitle under the development forum link that states "do not use any initiative to get valid problems solved here, do not discuss with development familiar folks about development level problems as this title suggests.. but DO use it for posting your software... nothing else"

Wow White Knights made it out pretty early in this thread.
It's really simple. Big sticky that says this isn't Q&A. This is Q&A and no ROM development or Android development. It's someone who knows better, posting a Question in the Development section. If you have a question about a specific ROM, suck it up like everyone else and ask in that thread.
Follow the rules.
Back to the White Knights: Stop defending people who break the rules. This protect the ignorant mentality is baffling.
Sadly, answering these questions just leads to more and more cluttering crap in the development threads making it harder to find stuff than it already is.

Uh dude, there has always been a big STICKY on this forum that says exactly what you just said. "Thread DELETED/Locked??? This is DEVELOPMENT section not Q&A/General!!!!"
And once more like has been said time and time again. If you have an issue with a ROM, suck it up like the rest of us and post in that ROM Dev's forum or PM them.
To try and help kerb the amount of topics posted with the Title "Whats the best ROM" I thought I'd try to create a poll so that people can post their favourites, and then hopefully people can check here rather than ask with a new topic.

I've been a MiUi user since I got a Desire a couple of years ago. On the OneX I've been using Dekky's RD-MiUi (recently switched to the Jellybean version) and its simply great every week.
I am not a pro user of these forums, but I would like someone, especially the Mods to make a thread about most popular roms of DHD and let people vote.. It would give one an idea of what rom is trending and what is the most widely used.. Sure would help ignite the competition too ..
If any such thread already exists on this forum, please tell me...
You can do it yourself...and you might be the first one to do so (i havent searched to see if there is one out there already...)
It is not done do the fact we are all tired of hearing the same question over and over again what's the best rom what's a solid stable rom and they all get closed. Each rom works different for everyone. What's good to one is utter crap to another and your topic will only start a flaming war hence the reason why such threads are closed. Only you can tell what's good for you by trying a few out or reading comments on the devs threads. Hmm I think I hear zels footsteps.

Might be nice to centralize it though. No comments, just a pure poll. (Not sure if there's a way to do that.) It might cut down on the one-post immediately-closed "which is the best ROM" threads.
A poll with no comments may work.

Well there is something similar. Its not a poll.. but it gives a pretty decent breakdown on the roms currently available broken down into categories Jellybean, ICS, GB etc. It might help out?

Yeah, I know about that, but I see a lot of threads opened that basically ask "I'm new, what is the most popular/best/favorite ROM?" The index gives a good list of available ROMs, but it doesn't shed a lot of light on how many people use each one, which seems to be what newbies would like to know (to help them decide which to install). Maybe a poll would cut down on such threads. I've PMed a mod to see if such a poll would be well-received.

I completely disagree, bcoz u can't compare all the efforts of devs. Every single piece of their work is truly admirable. Whatever they have done is absolutely priceless.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD
I didn't mean that devs work isn't priceless, of course that is commendable!! And its not strict comparing either.. I just meant that one should have idea about new trending romS and also how many people are using which rom.... I know one rom may be excellent for someone and crap for another, have probably flashed more than 100 roms myself. I am just taking about the current trend of roms
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app
I agree with a poll with no comments, just a simple poll with rom names allowing members to state what they are using, we don't need to know their reasons why.
One thing I don't always understand is people read threads, see what features the rom has but still want other people to tell them.... Just install it and have a look yourself! Most common case I've seen is in the Sabsa Prime thread as it's what I use, people ask for updates and then when one comes along, they ask people to try it out and report back if it's worth updating. Grrrrr!! It's your phone, you want the updates so try it out and see if it suits YOU. Simples.

I saw your PM yesterday and had been giving it some thought. It looks like my co-moderator has contacted you already and let you know that the system will lock the poll as part of closing thread. Even if it was possible to separate the two, I'd be inclined to close down polls like the one you suggest. While some of you might think a poll like this a good idea, it smells a bit too much like a popularity contest.
Some of you may already know that many moderators in other forums have a wholesale ban on "Best ROM" threads. This is because a lot of these threads tend to be a breeding ground for rivalries and disrespecting others' work that can degenerate into infighting and other nastiness. I don't want to be heavy-handed on this topic because I see some benefit to discussions that compare/contrast ROMs and kernels IF they are done objectively and with respect for others. The last part of this is the most important here.
You might have already seen comments that say, "there is no best, try it and see what you like" and that's true. We all have different needs and likes, so there can be no best, but some sharing of knowledge and experiences with various ROMs can be helpful to others. Again, all of this needs to be done objectively and with respect for others. There's already a thread in General with many opinions and nobody's been really causing any trouble there, so I suggest all of you continue those discussions there. Please... no "best" polls.
I'm sorry to threadjack this from the OP, but since the idea has been shot down, I welcome your thoughts on the matter. If you don't want to air it out publicly, my PM box is always open.

Thanks for explaining. I just thought that a more centralized and easy-to-read format would help newbies who are confused when they first see that (seemingly endless) list of ROM threads that is so appealing to those of us who've been around a little longer. But I respect your position and it makes sense. Also, without the comment-locked-forum option, I agree that these types of threads do tend to degenerate.
Hey All,
I've got a question.
I need a good clean rom, with long battery life.
Right now I use VJ 4.2, and battery is draining rather quick.
It doesn't really matter which version of android it is, aslong as I can use the phone for atleast a full day (2 or more days would be better though) on a festival with moderate use, reguarly taking photo's, posting them to facebook, and using whatsapp.
Doesn't really have to do anything else.
Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

Swearing? the word hell is not swearing imo. sorry if it offended you
I am not asking for a best rom, im for something that would give me a better battery life for a couple of days.
I know each rom is different etc and everyone works hard, but I don't have time to flash 20 roms on my phone and test the battery life on each and every one of those.
So why wouldnt I be allowed to ask a question about it? people have expierences with different roms.
And I've read the forums rules, so those are the rules I use, nothing in there about asking about this.
My join date has nothing to do with this tbh, I only occasionally come here. if they've posted those rules somewhere else and it went to page 23083 or something like that, I can't do anything about that ofcourse.
If there is such a rule, it should be in the rules in the sticky in my opinion.

Well, "best rom" is in the title, so ...
It is covered under Rule 2 in that it is generally perceived as disrespectful to the devs that work for free to share with us. Also, it has been known on frequent occasions to start "spirited discussions" shall we say among supporters of various devs/ROMs. Finally, the experiences others have with various ROMs is generally not directly applicable to your phone as there are small variations in the electronics, your geographical location, cell towers and more that will add up to large overall differences.
Thank you,

I'm looking for a stable 4.4 which would be as stable as possible. The reason for this is that I use my Nexus for alarm clock and it's really unpleasant if I find it in SOD when I oversleep. I don't really need so much additional features, it's a bonus though, but it's more important that it's fast and bugless.
Are there any or should I stay on Cataclysm 4.3?
Well, you can only reliably know which ROM is the most stable by trying them yourself. That's part of the culture of XDA, to try ROMs from different developers and then to give feedback on them.
As for me, I just installed the latest CM11 nightly and it seems reasonably stable. Will test the battery life and stability for a few more days after installing some apps. Will try XenonHD next if this one isn't stable enough or has poor battery life. The phone does get hot when I'm running heavy applications and games, which is the only problem I have noticed so far.
Im running the CM11 Nightlies as well and cant complain at all. Havent had any issues with any of them. I usually update every couple days to the latest nightly.
If it's just using the device as an alarm, then CM11 nightlies would be quite enough. I've been using my own GNex as an alarm too.
Sent from Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE @ CM11
I've read through several ROM threads that a lot of them have have slowdowns and lags. Is that also the case for CM11? How about other CM based ROMs, like CM-remix?
Can't say much about other roms (aside from CM i've only ever tried AOKP jb-mr2 briefly), i'm on CM11 M2 right now and i can say it's smooth and has no hiccups and lags - much better than stock 4.3 and cm10.2 which i had beforehand.
I'm also using the device as an alarm clock and it works well.
Seriously? How many times do people have to be told that threads like this are against XDA rules. If you want a stable rom then try some roms out yourself and decide what you prefer for yourself. This is a development community meant for people that want to take the initiative to learn and do for themselves not a place for people to have others do their work for them.
Do some reading and you'll surely find the answers you seek.

4.3 is waaaay smoother for me.
a stock 4.4.2 build would be great.

Nephilim, sorry, I thought that it's forbidden to open only general ROM comparison threads, but I'm asking only for the ideas of pretty specific needs. You could also take this thread as a discussion if 4.4 ROMs in general are really stable enough for everyday use.
Not all of us have time to test every build of every ROM, because it would take a bit too much. That's why we have a community here to ask others for their opinion and experiences. At least that's how I imagine it, but of course, I might be wrong.

No it isnt illegal. But these threads are pointless... There is no best ROM so these threads will never be solved/answered. And the devs work hard to build a ROM and then some people in a thread will tell him his ROM sucks and the other one is better.. Its personal preference anyway. And every ROM is stable otherwise they wouldnt be released on xda (except when told otherwise or in beta etc.). Thats the whole point. There are tons of these threads. They are just useless. Just try out a ROM and if it suits your needs be happy and thank the developer and if you arent just move on to the next one.

My problem is that if you aren't willing to put in the work and try roms yourself you have no business on a development forum. Asking others is just looking for someone else to do the work for you. Threads like this are basically spam because any info you need can be found in the threads made for each rom. If you are asking in a thread like this you are definitely lazy because you obviously dont want to put in the effort of finding the information by reading the rom threads. Mrgnex pretty much said the rest.

ParanoidAndroid 4 BETA
I'm using an edited version of ParanoidAndroid 4 BETA. The official beta has some graphical issues and random freezes, but the edited version is very stable with no problems at all. It's based on Android 4.4.2. Give it a try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2589481

I'd fully agree with your comments, IF this thread was posted in development section, but it's not, it's in the GENERAL section.
So I don't see why NORMAL users(AKA non-flashaholics) can't freely discuss which ROM they prefer, regardless of stability.
BTW
I've tried out a lot of different/newer ROM's from 4.1 to 4.4.2 yet every time I've still went back to using PA 4.1.2 for over a year now, since no other ROM have the exact same great features I enjoy using daily.
Also I don't see why any Developer would really care if certain people dislike their ROM's, seeing as the whole reason they created one would be because they disliked the other ROM's available and wanted to build one them selves to their liking, many using the same features from other developers, just with their own tweaks.
Which is what I'm thinking I'll have learn to do since every ROM I've tested has some feature that's just not working as I'd like.
You suggesting every user go and test out every ROM just means there will be more individual threads created complaining about every ROM they flash/test.
So don't you think it's better to have 1 or 2 main ROM version threads in the GENERAL section to DISCUSS different individual Rom's in the GENERAL matter?
In other words if you don't really have anything to help out in the thread topic/discussion then just don't view it.
I personally enjoy reading about what others have to say, likely saving me time and headache from having to test out every Rom's myself.
I very much doubt there would be as many Rom's available as there are today if nobody discussed them.
Wasn't that the whole point of having an open sourced android OS?

First of all, threads like this would not be constantly deleted by Senior Moderators if they were allowed. Next, I never once said that everyone should go and try every rom. I said that people need to go to the rom threads and READ, if the rom seems like something they would like to try then they should flash it, if not move onto another rom. Next, after flashing the said rom they are trying they can READ the thread pertaining to said rom to find answers to their questions.
You see where I am going here?
There is NO REASON for threads like this. All the information anyone could need can be found in the rom threads. If an individual needs to make a thread like this it just says that they are too lazy to read all the information that is already provided in multiple threads, available to everyone. If you want to discuss a rom then make a community on Google+, I already have done the same. This site is called XDA Developers. If you have questions about a rom then read the thread about the rom and if you do not see the question you have already asked then go ahead and ask it.
If you want to make a thread here in the general section to discuss a rom you have already flashed and are running, that would not be a big issue either but..... Making a thread simply to ask others to tell you which rom is most stable or which rom is the best serve no purpose but to congest areas of XDA with useless spam.
If you are here, you have either rooted your device or plan to, either way if you are here for that then you have enough brains to read and gain knowledge the correct way by doing the legwork yourself.
If the amount of effort you put into trying to debate my legitimate reasons why this thread does not belong was put into discovering roms for yourself then there would never be a need for anyone to make a thread like this.
Bottomline, only lazy people make threads like this and XDA is for forum for adults seeking to enhance their knowledge of mobile development by way of contribution, not a G+ community to request everyone do your work for you while you sit around posting screenshots of your homescreen and icon theme.
Not a thing anyone responds to me with will justify these type of useless threads. Every way you can learn what you need about roms has been mentioned in my posts and none of them require an entire thread dedicated to asking others to give you the answers.

I would respectfully disagree. Not everyone has followed the entire course of development for the Galaxy Nexus from the beginning. It is hard to know where to start if you are just now reading up on things (as I am). People are trying to do their research otherwise they would just flash any old thing and then complain when nothing works.
In many other fields (I work in biology) it is very common to have a review article to get people up to speed on a specific topic without them having to read every primary piece of evidence on a topic because that is a lot of needless repetitive work that has already been done. It isn't being lazy. It is being efficient.
I stumbled upon this thread and found it to be EXACTLY what I was looking for and very relevant. Just a quick guide to let me know if it was worth looking into kitkat roms or if (as I suspected) I should stick with Jelly Bean roms for now since stability is also my primary goal. I can't understand the hostile nature towards people trying to educate themselves that seems to permeate xda sometimes...

Apparently you have not read a word of what I posted.
There is NO reason for these type of posts because all the information you seek on a rom or kernel is in their respective thread. Even if you do not want to use them you still have all the review you need from people on the thread that actually used the rom or kernel, these threads are a copout for lazy people that do not take the time to read where the information is already easily accessible. These types of threads are spam, they are made by people who come to XDA and do not even put a second of time into looking through threads before just expecting that posting a new thread and asking about what is the best will get them all the info they need without any effort.
I have said this many times already, In school, when you have a test or assignment, does your teacher give that test or assignment to you and then immediately hand over the answers? Hell no they don't, they expect you to research and study to find the answers. As adults that is what should be done here as well, otherwise you ultimately learn nothing.
I use the official 4.4.2 gummy build and it is very stable for me and have not encountered any issues.
