For some reason Toolkit didnt work for me and i used this method to unlock bootloaders and root it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362957
Also installed CWM recovery
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I installed my drivers and 1st time when I connected my phone in adb toolkit recognised it and showed his id. Next time when I connected it in adb it didnt recognise it in toolkit but windows recognise my phone and i can access it.
I've rebooted my pc every time and reinstalled couple of drivers:
-Naked samsung drivers
-Pda drivers
-Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Moblie_Phones_v1_4_6_0
Nothing worked.
1st time I used Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Moblie_Phones_v1_4_6_0 and i tried again and nothing.
I am on Windows 7 64bit version.
If anyone knows how to solve this please share the idea.

I was facing lot of driver issues when connecting my GNex for the first time to the laptop on WinXP. Installing the drivers through the GNex Toolkit also did not work for me.
Finally what worked for me was, installing the latest version of Android SDK with the additional package of Google USB drivers, and then manually selecting the drivers after connecting my phone instead of asking Windows to look for drivers automatically.
I had trouble when first connecting my GNex too. However, these drivers worked for me (plus work with many many other android devices):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379875
If you have several android devices you'll find that you don't have to install multiple drivers for adb, fastboot, etc. for each of the devices.
Taken from post#3 of the ToolKit thread:
Note 1: If the driver doesnt install automatically then double click on the Android 1.0 item, then click on the driver tab and select 'update driver'. Select 'browse my computer' and then 'Let me pick from a list'. If no items appear in the list then untick 'Show compatible hardware' and find the Android adb driver or Samsung adb driver.
Try that as they may be on your pc and just not installing.
Mark.
Got them working now but i have problem when rooting, using GNex toolkit 5.6
It boots into android, i set usb debugging but when the phone is suppose to boot back to fastboot it gives error device not connected.
I need help install android driver on windows 8. I put phone into bootloder and a pop in windows says usb devices not recognized. in device manager, there is item called android 1.0. I used toolkit 9.1 install driver, it only has option for windows 7. the result says the resource loader cache doesn't have loaded MUI entry. I downloaded naked driver 0.7, install from device manager, I get error says 'windows encountered error install the driver' Samsung galaxy nexus bootloader interface.
what should I do ?

i use these drivers.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379875
PS- next time post in the correct section
I had the same issue with Win8.
If u select the manual driver option within the toolkit there is a link to pdanet (or something similar).
I downloaded and installed that (with nexus disconnected), it looked like the installer failed but the driver must have stuck because the next time I connected via fastboot it had the correct driver.
Hope that helps

"The toolkit only has windows 7"
And because of that, you dont know what to do/to try. Just great.
Remove all drivers, reboot. Boot Nexus to bootloader, connect usb, go to device manager, manually update the driver by right click on android 1.0 or whatever the device name is, choose the driver that you previously extracted (naked drivers). Reboot. Should work.
// offtopic : windows 8 has got to be the worst windows yet.

I have installed android SDK and google USB driver is installed. I also downloaded naked driver 0.7 and manually install driver from device manger item called android 1.0, choose folder from naked driver. still get the same error.
Uninstall all drivers, try the ones in the samsung website for windows 8.
Jeez, you need help with drivers go to a windows forum, i'm sure it exists such a thing and google knows about it.

even after updating to 4.1.1, i still can't connect this thing to my computer, could it be a usb problem?
it endlessly says 'connecting' on kies, and other times it'll say 'hardware id missing'. then other times the drivers all install correctly and states the the device is ready for use, but on my phone a notice comes up titled 'Attention', stating that there isn't any software on my computer that can recognize the device. sometimes it HAS WORKED on ics, but no luck so far after my recent update.
what's wrong? it's been like this since the moment i've purchased the phone, but the 'Attention' notice was new after I updated to jb.
edit:
the attention notice says:
"Unable to find software on your PC that can recognise this device. Service pack 3, Windows Media Player, version 10 or higher, for Windows XP or Android File Transfer for Mac OS must be installed.
You can download and install PC Kies from (URL) in order to sync data with your device, back up data, and upgrade your device. (Windows and MAc OS are supported)."
im running windows 7. also, i think the hardware ID missing notice is linked to the attention notice.
Search Google for Samsung Galaxy s III drivers (sorry don't have a link) nd try from there.

Uninstall kies completely and download a fresh install and go from there.
Mtp error fix
I found a solution and you do not need to do a factory reset.
1. Uninstall Kies and Samsung USB Drivers
2. Go to My Computer Properties -- Device Manager -- Look For Any Android or Samsung devices.
3. Right click and select Uninstall.
4. Check "Uninstall drivers..." option.
5. After uninstalling, plug in the phone. It should work now.
Worked for me. Hope it works for you guys as well.
I recently performed a clean install of Windows 7 64-bit on my PC.
I intermittently get the "Device Hardware ID Missing" error when connecting my phone. USB drivers were auto-installed by Windows when I connected my phone. I also installed the Android SDK and have attempted to update the USB drivers that Windows uses for my phone to those from the SDK. I have also tried installing the drivers available on Samsung's website.
What is the best way to remove all Samsung/Google USB drivers, prevent Windows from auto-installing drivers and clean install new drivers?
Hi, I just flashed the 4.4 official image from google. Still on stock recovery.
I do plan to install custom recovery to flash some custom rom now.
However, when I try to plug my tablet in laptop (windows 7 64bit), all i hear is that ding sound, hover over the usb devices i would see nexus 7, but it is not showing in the Windows Explorer.
PTP would show, but MTP wouldnt, with or without usb debugging enabled.
I tried to update my usb driver from google via SDK, i uninstalled first before upgrading so its a clean install, however i am still stuck here.
Any other solution?

If you have Wugfrest Root Kit, in there Click Full Driver Installation Guide - Automatic + Manual and follow his instruction.
Or you can uninstall the driver and update the driver yourself to a specific location on your computer. (this method i used) I run Win 7, and it would detect Nexus 7 but fail, when it told me to update driver i went to the folder where i put the drivers. Eventually you will find the right driver. Its a pain in butt to get the drivers to work sometimes.
