intrusive spyware - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey just got myself the note II yesterday and of course I went looking for apps on the samsung app store and I noticed something very troublesome and makes me very concerned....there is WAAY too many apps that wanna record, monitor and process your phone calls (whatever that means) for example a lightning live wallpaper...why the f***k would they want to monitor, record your phone calls? this is very alarming to me!!! is this some sort of new trend with android phones? am I the only one that finds this alarming? its getting very bad that we are loosing our privacy just because I would like to have a lightning live wallpaper! also am I being overly paranoid? what do you guys think? also I noticed this isn't happening or less frequently on the google play store....I find this very very suspicious and concerning...I wouldnt want some shady person auspiciously getting my sensative info and robbing me blind!

I'm not saying all apps require all the permissions they require, but depending on what the app does and how it functions may dictate requirements that appear odd.
If the screen saver acts on phone state, it may need to know if the phone is ringing or in sleep state. Check the API docs, its a good way to see what functions need which permissions.
It's easy to cry that the sky is falling, but make sure it's not just someone dropping dirt from your roof.

[Q] Strange evo virus

I have noticed strange behavior on my friends evo. When he makes a call, the "end call" button is sometimes unresponsive from 5 to 20 seconds. After the call is over and sometimes before he makes a call, pictures of androids doing silly things like surfing or running for president pop up and prevent him from doing anything. This continues after he uses the HTC software update. I uninstalled "dialer one" but his dialer program still has a black background like dialer one. I checked running services and I didn't notice anything suspicious. What do you guys think it is?
No virus bro haha
Doubtful that it's a virus. To my knowledge there are still 0 known viruses for android, save for the one that Lookout Mobile claims exists in china, but they are the only ones making the claim and one of the only companies with something to gain from viruses actually existing so I take what they say with a grain of salt.
Sounds to me he just installed something funky and doesn't remember. If you can't find anything out of the ordinary installed, then I would do a factory reset. It should clear that right up, whatever it is.
yeaaaaaa I guess. I'm a senior electrical engineer so I would notice if some lame program was doing it... I'll take a closer look or try and convince him to do a factory reset.
Open up the market. He installed an Android Phone Pic app or something similar.

New Xperia Play owner - Multiple issues

I've owned my Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G (R800at) for a week and a half now. It's actually my first Android experience and I am having serious iOS withdrawls despite being an adamant critic of many things Apple/iOS. Well, I did install it on my HP TouchPad a few weeks ago but I haven't really poked around yet.
Anyway, when I first charged it, it took almost all day. I was using it while charging it, but it still seemed ridiculously slow. After that, I would find it draining excessively fast despite only having a couple downloaded apps (OpenWatch, Pandora, etc) and rebooting to make sure that they were closed. Twice in the first week I set my alarm and woke to find it had drained completely and shut off (no alarm). This is inconsistent: other days it seems fine. I'm stumped bue, perhaps it doesn't like being on an AT&T Micro Cell? More testing required for that theory.
Anyway, I also noticed that performance is inexplicably bad some times and not others. After a fresh restart, my home screen will freeze and prompt to wait or force-quit. This seems completely random and it affects other apps too. For example, I'll start an SNES emulator and find it unplayable about half the time (choppy FPS and stuttering audio) and perfectly playable other times (no noticable frameskip or audio stuttering). If I reboot the phone first, you would expect results to be consistent but they often are not and I get the same choppy performance. Though I seem to have better performance with SNES9x Ex, both it and SNES A.D. have this issue.
If this is related to SD card performance, I've noticed that some shortcuts on my home screens take a while to load from the SD card and have disappeared entirely on more than one occasion (had to recreate them).
Anyway, I see reviews praising the performance in emulators and the decent battery life with no mention of these issues, which leads me to believe that something is seriously wrong. How useful is an alarm that dies in less than one sleep session? It's bad enough that it doesn't have a timer function (seriously?).
Speaking of emulators, I am picky when it comes to classic games and I can perceive that there is definitely latency in the games I have tried. I play on a level that requires instant response so many players may never notice, but there are only so many times I can run off a ledge that I would have jumped off of safely before I have to wonder if there is some inherant latency in the input method. I'm sure the emulator authors are more likely to blame but none of the other native games seem to require that level of precision for me to tell. Has anyone made any kind of test program to measure latency?
Now, the AT&T sales associate told me that I would have visual voicemail. I do not and I had no voicemail at all for the first week (traditional VM could not be set up over the phone; had to be corrected on their end). Having no Android experience, I just assumed that all Android phone supported it along with major carriers and traditional VM was included only for unsupported carriers. Was I wrong? I also assumed that there would be Android equivalents for all the basic iOS apps like Notes, Clock (with timer/stop-watch functions), screen capture function, and battery percentage in the status bar, but I know now that this is not the case (sorely disappointed; patent disputes to blame?). I looked on Sony Ericsson's webpage and see that they once advertised that the Xperia Play had Panoramic Camera with Touch-to-Focus but they edited it out, which I only discovered when I tried to snap a photo of some notes and found it impossible to focus. The forums were in a tizzy over that, after they had edited that unsupported and falsely advertised feature out when I noticed another feature that was missing and STILL ADVERTISED. Many times I had wanted to use the screen capture function but had not yet had the chance to look up how, but the online feature page clearly said that it was activated with a touch of the Power/Lock button, which I had used many times. When it turned out to be another example of an unsupported feature that was advertised for this phone, I began to wonder if the AT&T sales person was the one at fault or if he were duped by an earlier list that included VVM.
Yes. I know I can approximate VVM functionality through Google Voice and I plan to. I am still disappointed that I can't fully integrate it with native text messaging like SMS GV Extensions could on a jailbroken iDevice, especially now that Apple does something similar with iMessage (I do not have a texting plan).
I have another similar example. I was wondering why the Xperia exclusives weren't all listed together under the "Play Games" browser that can be set to launch when opened. I found a reference to the launcher that includes it in the phone's built-in "User Guide," which always gives some error about not being able to find a user guide before displaying it anyway. So, the reference said that it can be set to auto-launch when the phone is opened just like the "Play Games" interface. The option is clearly not there. That's probably just an example of them getting confused by their own confusing attempts to simplify things. There should be a central and configurable way to launch all games but there is no option in the "Play Games" interface to add or link to your own games or the other Xperia exclusives. Having Need For Speed Shift on the full app drawer listing only with Need For Speed Pursuit on the "Play Games" app and Crash Bandicoot on the Playstation Pocket app that only accessible through the full app drawer listing just means you have a ton of places to go before you even know what games came pre-loaded on the phone! I have a co-worker who's played my phone nightly for NFSP and doesn't even know it also includes NFSS (I won't tell him so that I can have a little more time with my phone ). It turns out that he's a long-time Android user too. FWIW, I *refuse* to call either PS Pocket or Play Games an "XMB" like so many others have refered to it as because it is *not*. The "Xross Media Bar" refers to a user interface that includes a list of catergories intersecting with sub-categories, which this certainly does not. Think of a rail-road "x-ing." A wavy, colored, background does not an XMB make.
So I'm going to see if I can swap out the phone if there is a hardware problem causing my battery and performance woes but that leads me to my next question: What if I have to swap it out after the free games are no longer offered? Can I keep the exclusives that are on there? Before I get flamed for not searching that question, I'll search the "how" of the matter later and only ask in case a quick answer can be included to my other problems.
Thanks in advance!
What firmware are you running? 2.3.2 I know has battery issues, Though running 2.3.4 its fine, Ermm contact Sony Ericsson about it.

It took forever to charge on 2.3.3 and I upgraded to 2.3.4 before I could fully test but I just exchanged it and got another with 2.3.3. I'll be using it a couple days on 2.3.3 without OpenWatch to see if that had anything to do with it.
Thanks!
Explain to me how to update to 2.3.4 I'm on 2.3.3 and I'm having more problems then spittle with this phone lag randomx ghost actions and such I'm about to trade this thing in.... everytime I go to update it says no updates found wait 24hours and I have the 4g play

I'm assuming that it was 2.3.4 because I heard that it was the latest available and I used the Sony Ericsson PC companion app to find the latest update and apply it but I no longer have that one to see if it was truly 2.3.4.
The new phone had LESS than 200MB available out of the box and I am almost positive that all the performance and stability issues were caused by the ridiculously limited storage while the charging issues were likely a hardware problem. I doubt Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is going to free up much, if any, additional space, so I have to wonder how they expect us to upgrade without hacking out all the bloat or them deliberately removing most of the crap despite the fact that they are still advertising features that have yet to be added ("Screen Capture" and "Gesture input"). My Google Voice/Voicemail issues are probably cause by a configuration issue on AT&T's end.
Screen Capture is only available in 2.3.4.
If by gesture input you mean swipe from one letter to another to build up a word then that is on 2.3.4 and must be enabled. I stumbled upon it yesterday in the options and it works ok, seems to get confused with some words. I tried to input "functionality" five times before I gave up and typed it in.
As for upgrading you can either wait for your carrier or use wotanserver, depending on your phone.
You can root and use titanium backup to either freeze, or backup and remove the bloat. Made a big difference in performance and battery life on my device.
God! Maybe u bought the bad piece, (u know 1 of 1xxx made phones are bad) XD i dont know but u should send a e-mail to Sony Ericsson... well to Sony or to Ericsson i dont know cus i heard Sony Ericsson doest exist any more =S
My phone charges VERY FAST... I think the phone maybe faulty..

Also, I see that the original poster may be on AT&T. To my knowledge, we haven't gotten the 2.3.4 update yet. I'm on 2.3.3, and I haven't been given the option to update.
Also, about the emulation. If you are unhappy with the emulation on this phone, I don't know what to tell you man, unless you do have a faulty phone. Of all of the devices I've ran NES emulators on, including iPhone 3G, iPad2, old Windows Mobile, my DS and even PCs with wireless gamepads, this phone does an exceptional job! Maybe the PSone and N64 emulators aren't quite spot on, but I'm pretty sure this will be the device I finally finish Ghosts N Goblins on.
I'm thinking either you have something severely consuming your CPU, or you have a defective phone. Is your phone warm to the touch after you charge it, or just simply warm all day long? If I don't tinker with my phone all day, or make calls on it, it can go two days on one charge. Also, I'm using the stock AT&T rom, only removed AT&T navigator and a couple of other bloatwares. I really don't think I removed anything that would be consuming my battery though.
Also, your question on the games showing up in the Play Games menu. You can take a look at this post in the forums. He has a download to get a few emulators in the Play Games menu, and has a link explaining how you can add them yourself on other games. I've been successful on a few, and not on some others. To make the story short though, it's up to the developer to add the icon to the menu.

Yes. After I pointed out on Sony Ericsson's forums that the feature wasn't there, they added a note that it required a software update. That update still isn't available. I'm specifically talking about the Xperia PLAY 4G features page, which means AT&T. Can wotanserver update an R800at to 2.3.4 and retain HSPA+ ("4G speeds")? Everything I read talks about the R800i.

Even my replacement could not be described as charging "very fast." I used it for three days without installing any apps and deleting and turning off as many of theirs as possible and it is much better, but I obviously bought this phone to use it so I'll soon know if the issues return after I start loading it with software again.

You are right. I'm on 2.3.3. I do recall getting an update on my last one and assumed that it must have been 2.3.4. IIRC, I got it through the companion app (not OTA).

I'm saying that there is a perceptible latency in the one I tested that makes expert-level gaming impossible, but it's likely from the emulator author and another emulator may not have the issue (tested NESoid). I just wanted to know for sure.
Most gamers would never notice. I play Donkey Kong Country on my Sony XBR television with an actual SNES and I start firing out of the barrel cannons in the wrong directions, running right off cliffs, and jumping too late to avoid enemies until I turn off the image filtering options and enable game mode. Suddenly, even though I'm pressing them with the same timing, I now fire in time, jump before running off a cliff, and jump before hitting enemies. The latency matters to me because I play where a spilt second matters but most would never know.

It was intermittent. Sometimes I would find it inexplicably warm and I would restart it. The new one hasn't done that but I haven't loaded a single app. I think that even a few apps uses all the remaining storage and one of the internal porcesses to Timescape or some other SE customization goes crazy under this condition.

Thank you very much! Still, if it's up to the game maker, what is Sony's excuse for fragmenting "Play Games" and "Playstation Pocket?" They need to set the example! All they really need to do is let me add games to it the same as adding a shortcut to the Start menu on a Windows PC.

Wizards, help an old man with Moto notifications...

People Smarter than Me (anyone in this thread),
I'm looking for some help...I have a Moto360 paid with a WORK S5 that is SEVERELY crippled. Can't install anything not on the company white-list (and there ain't much on there). So, out of the gate, no Moto Connect. (BTW, if someone knows a way around THAT, there's $3 in it for you...)
Anyways, I have a GearFit, and I guess because it's Sammy, it's baked in. So, on the Fit, I get ALL notifications (SMS, email, At Bat, KNOX, etc). Even when there is a sent item from, Knox, I get the notification (a buzz on the wrist and an on screen notification). I like that.
Enter the Moto. I get a buzz on calls and SMS, but I get nothing from Knox (which is severely delayed), nothing from At Bat, etc. The cards are there, but nothing to alert me I have new notifications without looking. Most times I keep the phone on vibrate, but some apps vibrate (SMS) some don't (At Bat, Knox). I can't find a setting anywhere to make all notifications alert. I can see where to BLOCK them, but that's it. Am I missing it? The point of me getting a wrist wearable was to not miss stuff on the device, even when I don't have it physically on me. The Fit handles it, but I would like to get the Moto there.
Any ideas??
Do you (can you?) have Android Wear installed?
Sorry, yes. I think "they" (the corporate overlords) cranked down even harder, since at one time you could install some core Google and Samsung apps. For example, I got a Gear 2, and I could install the base program, but during setup, it needed some additional files, and they were blocked. Never got it to pair.
I have AW installed, but that's it. I can't install watch faces, or any additional programs on the phone. I saw a guide to installing apps to the watch from a PC, but haven't explored that yet. The watch is paired and working through AW, or the "base" version of it (it does update itself when there's one).
Thanks
Teach a man to fish...
So, it looks like if I set the profile of each application with a sound, THEN set the entire phone's profile to vibrate, I will get a quick burst vibrate. So, there's that. So far, anyway.
Is my best best for installing apps and watchfaces the whole bluetooth tether to a phone connected to a computer with the adb shell?

1 Month with the PD - thoughts

It has been a month since I got the PD.
Some brief thoughts based upon my experience with the phone.
I was an Apple user since they launched the iPhone in 2007. Nothing to do with the perpetual Apple vs. Android debate, just iOS suited my purposes, that's all.
I was using the HTC 10/BB DTEK50/Priv for a while, as a second phone.
I got fairly used to the operating system and to be honest, they are all very similar. But carrying 2, sometimes 3 phones was becoming a right pain, so looked for a good dual sim phone that would run two What's app accounts simultaneously.
Enter the PD. Easily love at first sight. I said this was my "jumping off point".
Wasn't very easy to get hold of, where I live, so had to wait almost a month and PAID-A-LOT-!! LOL
What a truly beautiful phone. I have used every Apple phone ever made, every BB phone made, 2 Vertu's (UGHH), and hand on my heart can say, I still cannot stop looking at it.
I had a major issue after setting it up, which is discussed in another thread.
I had no home screen icons or apps visible, only a blank screen that allowed calls and messages to come through in the status bar, could enter settings, but that was it.
The eventual solution, after almost suffering a heart attack, was to load both sims in, and then ejecting the sim tray. The apps just popped up instantly. Very strange, indeed.
After that, everything has been super easy.
-Stellar Battery (and I am a heavy user)
-2 whatsapp accounts running - awesome.
-What a lovely screen!
-No complaints with the camera. I like it. Even the slightly synthetic "Leica" look in the Wide Aperture Mode.
-The Fingerprint sensor is absolutely instant.
-EMUI is easy and nice to navigate
-The ability to edit the quick launch(?) icons in the pull down menu is excellent.
Now the bits that are bugging me.
1) No firmware updates. The last one was, I believe, in December, and I still am on B138. This is something that Huawei needs to look into post haste. I have written to them 5 times, till today. No response whatsoever.
2) Notifications - this is the elephant in the room. They are random at best.
All the Settings - Unlimited data Access, Battery Optimizations, Battery Ignore Whitelists, Priority Notifications, etc. are all on, as is oft discussed, and checked, but whatsapp and emails sometimes still do not give me a notification, until I open the app. This IS an issue for me. I am missing time constrained messages all the time. If anyone has a fix or solution for this, I will be very grateful.
3) Keyboard, Sometimes, the keyboard will freeze if the screen sleeps whilst the keyboard is open in an app, and I reopen it.
I have to collapse the keyboard and bring it up again. Not a huge deal, but an annoyance, none the less. Maybe a GBoard thing?
4) Screen Auto Brightness - Takes an age to organize itself. In the dark, it will blind you, before thinking to itself, that it is, indeed, night, and the screen should be a wee bit less bright. The exact opposite in the day - Very dim and then will eventually get off its backside and decide to brighten up the screen. Very annoying.
5) How do I change the name of my phone. It's not the Bluetooth and Wifi name. My car still picks it up as Huawei LON-L29, as do apps like Photosync and whilst connecting to my Mac.
6) Photos. Now this may not be a PD Specific issue, but when I transferred my 22,000 images across, they all came as a big jumbled mess. No date-wise organization. So looking for specific images, is well, impossible.
7) Music - No equalizer settings in the stock music app. For my specific purposes, unusable, because in my car's bluetooth radio, the bass is overwhelming.
So, apart from these minor points (and 1 big one), I love the phone. I wonder how they could possibly improve it...Firmware, Huawei! Firmware!
For photos delete the cache. That'll sort the jumbled up mess.
For Music Player Google removed the EQ option a few months ago, I hate Play Music now. I use Captune. It has its shortcomings but its the best EQ.
Keyboard - I use Swift with no problems.
My worst issues are the crappy screen protector (GG3) and the lack up updates. I'll be selling it shortly.
I'm enjoying my phone, the only gripe I have with it is the UPDATES.
As for keyboards Try downloading Blackberry Keyboard or Google Keyboard.
Thank you for your suggestions, guys.
I tried clearing the cache, but no joy there. I tried an app called Quickpic, that is apparently supposed to deal with this. Didn't help either.
I was wondering, even if I had to reimport all my image and video files, is there any way they could be sorted by date taken?
This is turning out to be as big of an issue as the notification one, as I depend on images and videos, to send and discuss with my clients. And needless to say, I can't find anything. So am relegated to carrying an iPhone 6s+ just for my media, so I can send the required files via email or WhatsApp. Really, Not an ideal situation.
I will try the BB Keyboard.
Regarding the packaged screen protector, agreed, it is appalling. Before I buy the 2.5/3D tempered glass screen protector, has anyone had any experience with it?
Bonerp, Captune works for me, Thank you.
Have any of you'll worked around the notification bug?
For example, WhatsApp notifications sometimes do not wake the screen, but when a second or third WhatsApp message comes through, it may wake...Or not.
Seriously, if this is such a widely publicized bug, why is Huawei not looking into this?

I tried a curved tempered glass protector and it was awful so binned it. It had tape on the edges and just didn't look good and lost sensitivity.
Have you tried clearing cache at the boot screen or from settings/storage? Might help with the notification bug.
I've sent Huawei several things to fix and just had a 'thank you' response and nothing more. I'm not aware of a notification bug though. I definitely had one on the mate 9 until the first pre release fix was received, but not on this one.
Only other thing I can suggest re pics is delete data, or delete google account, delete cache then add your account again.
How do you guys work around the copy-paste thing?
I mean to having to bring out a paper and pen for copying an email address, phone number, passage from a message or an email is just unacceptable, when this is a widely utilized convenience on other platforms and, I believe, some Android UI's too?
I have tried a few apps that claim they can do this, but no joy.
Also, sharing contacts from the contacts app, only allows vcard, text message and attach to email, no What'sApp, Outlook or any app, for that matter. Can this option be changed somewhere?
quick question
I am looking to get the mate 9 pro; which is the same phone as the PD, just without the fancy branding..
Are any of you on Tmobile in the USA, and, do you get 4G/LTE?
The reseller I have been emailing with on Amazon says you do NOT get 4GLTE on Tmobile in the USA with this phone, but I have read that you do.
Thanks if you can help with this! :good::good:

Samsung Galaxy watch active with pixel 3 xl

I got my wife the Samsung Galaxy active watch and it paired just fine with her Pixel 3 XL. The watch is missing a messaging app. She is able to get messaging notifications and reply to messages, but can't access previous messages because the little blue messaging app is nowhere on her watch. I tried to got to app store on the watch but couldn't find anything to download. All reviews on YouTube show that app right from the start. Am I missing something? Is this an option only for Galaxy phones? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You won't be able to see the messages unless you you a Samsung phone (which has the messages app), but when you get a text message, it will show on the watch, you can reply back to it and see previous messages. Make sure you have "messages" notifications enabled from the wear app. I am using the galaxy watch with the pixel 3 xl.

3. Do you think the Active is just as good with your Pixel as it would be with a Samsung? I have an S10+ now but I change phones like most people change underwear lol.
4. Anything else you can tell me to help me make my final decision..
PLEASE!!!! lol. thanks man.

Hey there,
1.Battery life in my case is like around 15% usage a day which is great given, the idea of the tizen is very different than wear os. sarcastically, I got the fossil sport as well, and I have been using that over the galaxy watch. The galaxy sport would probably have a great battery as well, maybe a little less than the galaxy watch.
2. I have not seen the nike app on the galaxy watch, however, I have used s-health. I was able to get decent tracking but without a map gps, you'd be limited to mapmyrun a few other ones, I honestly only used shealth since I found third party apps to drain the battery much much much quicker.
3. Yes, going with the active would be a solid choice, again, then only thing you won't get is the ability to recall text messages at any time, but you'd be able to view them and reply back to them as notifications or as they come in + you can compose a new one. Keep in mind that it doesn't have the real bixby, it is s-voice, which is extreme trash.
I also change phones like underwear "JOD"... It even works on the iphone but that's different "you won't be able to reply to notifications or messages, just view them"
3.a -- there is an app called pulse sms I believe or something like that that would allow you to sync text messages on the watch, view them, do anything you'd want with them, just will drain your phone's battery and watch like crazy.
4. Anything to help you. Well, if you will hold onto your android wear, it is nice to have both. I went back to android wear "with the faults of it and the bad battery life over the galaxy wear stuff", for me:
Pros of the galaxy wear:
-Great battery life.
-Consistent performance "once in a while it would lag but not that much"
Cons:
-Using it as a smart device is just not great.
-It is s-voice branded bixby which is just bad, like really frustrating to use, to the point that you'd find yourself typing on the t9 keyboard they provide rather than talking to that piece of S.
-App support sucks. Forexample, I am grocery shopping and I made a list in google keep, and I don't want to have my phone out, you can't pull google keep on the watch like android wear. Also, other apps like spotify is more frustrating to use than good.
-No google assistant. I use smart home stuff, and unless you have the samsung hub, you cannot control your stuff, wink, wemo ifftt, etc. That ecosystem is still very very very poor compared to android wear.
Overall: If you are looking for a watch with great battery life, and the ability to see and minimally reply back to text messages while using stock-ish apps like s-health and you're okay with a very limited app and community support, go for it.
If you're looking to have more apps, watch-faces, voice assistant, more fitness apps, you're in the google eco-system, stay with wear OS because it can be a very unpleasant experience after the honey-moon period.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have anymore questions.
Thanks that exactly what I needed. Today my Fossil battery life was way better so maybe it just had to bake in after the recent update. I went with Android WearOS originally because of the app support and potential. I'm hoping the battery continues to get better. I was struggling to make a day without a bit of a charge, however I'm on my final walk with the dog today and it's still around 30% after a 7am wake up. I couldn't justify both watches but I'm jealous you have em lol
