I've owned my Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G (R800at) for a week and a half now. It's actually my first Android experience and I am having serious iOS withdrawls despite being an adamant critic of many things Apple/iOS. Well, I did install it on my HP TouchPad a few weeks ago but I haven't really poked around yet.
Anyway, when I first charged it, it took almost all day. I was using it while charging it, but it still seemed ridiculously slow. After that, I would find it draining excessively fast despite only having a couple downloaded apps (OpenWatch, Pandora, etc) and rebooting to make sure that they were closed. Twice in the first week I set my alarm and woke to find it had drained completely and shut off (no alarm). This is inconsistent: other days it seems fine. I'm stumped bue, perhaps it doesn't like being on an AT&T Micro Cell? More testing required for that theory.
Anyway, I also noticed that performance is inexplicably bad some times and not others. After a fresh restart, my home screen will freeze and prompt to wait or force-quit. This seems completely random and it affects other apps too. For example, I'll start an SNES emulator and find it unplayable about half the time (choppy FPS and stuttering audio) and perfectly playable other times (no noticable frameskip or audio stuttering). If I reboot the phone first, you would expect results to be consistent but they often are not and I get the same choppy performance. Though I seem to have better performance with SNES9x Ex, both it and SNES A.D. have this issue.
If this is related to SD card performance, I've noticed that some shortcuts on my home screens take a while to load from the SD card and have disappeared entirely on more than one occasion (had to recreate them).
Anyway, I see reviews praising the performance in emulators and the decent battery life with no mention of these issues, which leads me to believe that something is seriously wrong. How useful is an alarm that dies in less than one sleep session? It's bad enough that it doesn't have a timer function (seriously?).
Speaking of emulators, I am picky when it comes to classic games and I can perceive that there is definitely latency in the games I have tried. I play on a level that requires instant response so many players may never notice, but there are only so many times I can run off a ledge that I would have jumped off of safely before I have to wonder if there is some inherant latency in the input method. I'm sure the emulator authors are more likely to blame but none of the other native games seem to require that level of precision for me to tell. Has anyone made any kind of test program to measure latency?
Now, the AT&T sales associate told me that I would have visual voicemail. I do not and I had no voicemail at all for the first week (traditional VM could not be set up over the phone; had to be corrected on their end). Having no Android experience, I just assumed that all Android phone supported it along with major carriers and traditional VM was included only for unsupported carriers. Was I wrong? I also assumed that there would be Android equivalents for all the basic iOS apps like Notes, Clock (with timer/stop-watch functions), screen capture function, and battery percentage in the status bar, but I know now that this is not the case (sorely disappointed; patent disputes to blame?). I looked on Sony Ericsson's webpage and see that they once advertised that the Xperia Play had Panoramic Camera with Touch-to-Focus but they edited it out, which I only discovered when I tried to snap a photo of some notes and found it impossible to focus. The forums were in a tizzy over that, after they had edited that unsupported and falsely advertised feature out when I noticed another feature that was missing and STILL ADVERTISED. Many times I had wanted to use the screen capture function but had not yet had the chance to look up how, but the online feature page clearly said that it was activated with a touch of the Power/Lock button, which I had used many times. When it turned out to be another example of an unsupported feature that was advertised for this phone, I began to wonder if the AT&T sales person was the one at fault or if he were duped by an earlier list that included VVM.
Yes. I know I can approximate VVM functionality through Google Voice and I plan to. I am still disappointed that I can't fully integrate it with native text messaging like SMS GV Extensions could on a jailbroken iDevice, especially now that Apple does something similar with iMessage (I do not have a texting plan).
I have another similar example. I was wondering why the Xperia exclusives weren't all listed together under the "Play Games" browser that can be set to launch when opened. I found a reference to the launcher that includes it in the phone's built-in "User Guide," which always gives some error about not being able to find a user guide before displaying it anyway. So, the reference said that it can be set to auto-launch when the phone is opened just like the "Play Games" interface. The option is clearly not there. That's probably just an example of them getting confused by their own confusing attempts to simplify things. There should be a central and configurable way to launch all games but there is no option in the "Play Games" interface to add or link to your own games or the other Xperia exclusives. Having Need For Speed Shift on the full app drawer listing only with Need For Speed Pursuit on the "Play Games" app and Crash Bandicoot on the Playstation Pocket app that only accessible through the full app drawer listing just means you have a ton of places to go before you even know what games came pre-loaded on the phone! I have a co-worker who's played my phone nightly for NFSP and doesn't even know it also includes NFSS (I won't tell him so that I can have a little more time with my phone ). It turns out that he's a long-time Android user too. FWIW, I *refuse* to call either PS Pocket or Play Games an "XMB" like so many others have refered to it as because it is *not*. The "Xross Media Bar" refers to a user interface that includes a list of catergories intersecting with sub-categories, which this certainly does not. Think of a rail-road "x-ing." A wavy, colored, background does not an XMB make.
So I'm going to see if I can swap out the phone if there is a hardware problem causing my battery and performance woes but that leads me to my next question: What if I have to swap it out after the free games are no longer offered? Can I keep the exclusives that are on there? Before I get flamed for not searching that question, I'll search the "how" of the matter later and only ask in case a quick answer can be included to my other problems.
Thanks in advance!
What firmware are you running? 2.3.2 I know has battery issues, Though running 2.3.4 its fine, Ermm contact Sony Ericsson about it.

It took forever to charge on 2.3.3 and I upgraded to 2.3.4 before I could fully test but I just exchanged it and got another with 2.3.3. I'll be using it a couple days on 2.3.3 without OpenWatch to see if that had anything to do with it.
Thanks!
Explain to me how to update to 2.3.4 I'm on 2.3.3 and I'm having more problems then spittle with this phone lag randomx ghost actions and such I'm about to trade this thing in.... everytime I go to update it says no updates found wait 24hours and I have the 4g play

I'm assuming that it was 2.3.4 because I heard that it was the latest available and I used the Sony Ericsson PC companion app to find the latest update and apply it but I no longer have that one to see if it was truly 2.3.4.
The new phone had LESS than 200MB available out of the box and I am almost positive that all the performance and stability issues were caused by the ridiculously limited storage while the charging issues were likely a hardware problem. I doubt Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is going to free up much, if any, additional space, so I have to wonder how they expect us to upgrade without hacking out all the bloat or them deliberately removing most of the crap despite the fact that they are still advertising features that have yet to be added ("Screen Capture" and "Gesture input"). My Google Voice/Voicemail issues are probably cause by a configuration issue on AT&T's end.
Screen Capture is only available in 2.3.4.
If by gesture input you mean swipe from one letter to another to build up a word then that is on 2.3.4 and must be enabled. I stumbled upon it yesterday in the options and it works ok, seems to get confused with some words. I tried to input "functionality" five times before I gave up and typed it in.
As for upgrading you can either wait for your carrier or use wotanserver, depending on your phone.
You can root and use titanium backup to either freeze, or backup and remove the bloat. Made a big difference in performance and battery life on my device.
God! Maybe u bought the bad piece, (u know 1 of 1xxx made phones are bad) XD i dont know but u should send a e-mail to Sony Ericsson... well to Sony or to Ericsson i dont know cus i heard Sony Ericsson doest exist any more =S
My phone charges VERY FAST... I think the phone maybe faulty..

Also, I see that the original poster may be on AT&T. To my knowledge, we haven't gotten the 2.3.4 update yet. I'm on 2.3.3, and I haven't been given the option to update.
Also, about the emulation. If you are unhappy with the emulation on this phone, I don't know what to tell you man, unless you do have a faulty phone. Of all of the devices I've ran NES emulators on, including iPhone 3G, iPad2, old Windows Mobile, my DS and even PCs with wireless gamepads, this phone does an exceptional job! Maybe the PSone and N64 emulators aren't quite spot on, but I'm pretty sure this will be the device I finally finish Ghosts N Goblins on.
I'm thinking either you have something severely consuming your CPU, or you have a defective phone. Is your phone warm to the touch after you charge it, or just simply warm all day long? If I don't tinker with my phone all day, or make calls on it, it can go two days on one charge. Also, I'm using the stock AT&T rom, only removed AT&T navigator and a couple of other bloatwares. I really don't think I removed anything that would be consuming my battery though.
Also, your question on the games showing up in the Play Games menu. You can take a look at this post in the forums. He has a download to get a few emulators in the Play Games menu, and has a link explaining how you can add them yourself on other games. I've been successful on a few, and not on some others. To make the story short though, it's up to the developer to add the icon to the menu.

Yes. After I pointed out on Sony Ericsson's forums that the feature wasn't there, they added a note that it required a software update. That update still isn't available. I'm specifically talking about the Xperia PLAY 4G features page, which means AT&T. Can wotanserver update an R800at to 2.3.4 and retain HSPA+ ("4G speeds")? Everything I read talks about the R800i.

Even my replacement could not be described as charging "very fast." I used it for three days without installing any apps and deleting and turning off as many of theirs as possible and it is much better, but I obviously bought this phone to use it so I'll soon know if the issues return after I start loading it with software again.

You are right. I'm on 2.3.3. I do recall getting an update on my last one and assumed that it must have been 2.3.4. IIRC, I got it through the companion app (not OTA).

I'm saying that there is a perceptible latency in the one I tested that makes expert-level gaming impossible, but it's likely from the emulator author and another emulator may not have the issue (tested NESoid). I just wanted to know for sure.
Most gamers would never notice. I play Donkey Kong Country on my Sony XBR television with an actual SNES and I start firing out of the barrel cannons in the wrong directions, running right off cliffs, and jumping too late to avoid enemies until I turn off the image filtering options and enable game mode. Suddenly, even though I'm pressing them with the same timing, I now fire in time, jump before running off a cliff, and jump before hitting enemies. The latency matters to me because I play where a spilt second matters but most would never know.

It was intermittent. Sometimes I would find it inexplicably warm and I would restart it. The new one hasn't done that but I haven't loaded a single app. I think that even a few apps uses all the remaining storage and one of the internal porcesses to Timescape or some other SE customization goes crazy under this condition.

Thank you very much! Still, if it's up to the game maker, what is Sony's excuse for fragmenting "Play Games" and "Playstation Pocket?" They need to set the example! All they really need to do is let me add games to it the same as adding a shortcut to the Start menu on a Windows PC.

I'm currently using an EnergyROM w/ Sense 2.5 on my Touch Pro 2 and am happy with everything so far, however my only let down with Windows Mobile is the types of applications made available for it.
I'm wondering whether it's worth me installing Android on my phone for the sake of having better quality applications and games?
Or is it still too early in development for something like that? I remember awhile back people were saying the sound wasn't working.
As far as Android go and whether its worth installing really depends on what type of apps you need. The sound is still not working on the external speaker at the moment as well as some other functions. With your current Windows build you are using, it will still be there. Android is installed on the external storage card. You can switch back after running Android by doing a soft reset.
Actually you dont need to even soft reset (well not with the stylus anyway), just hold down the lower right button and it will ask you to power down? then it starts back up in WM
Some people are using it as their main operating system but I just 'Play' with it. As mentioned ring tones etc is not working yet.

I think he actually means the external storage card. It doesn't hurt to try it out to see if it's something you'll like. You can always go back to WinMo by soft resetting your device.
if android worked as well on my touch pro 2 as well as it does on my touch pro, i would be using it as my daily driver. sound doesnt work, power management doesnt really work, but the apps are good and with sense its very pretty, and i feel i can jump in and play games and stuff without having to worry about not having a phone since it can still make calls are send texts. if the camera, sound, gps where working, and the battery could last for more than 2 hours, i would have no reason to go back into windows really. hopefully the touch pro 3 will be android or something. if just for getting sense on 2.1 in landscape.

Besides, REAL tech flashing geeks wouldn't need to ask this question. Its a matter of trying it yourself, and coming to an educated conclusion on whether or not its worth it for YOU.
As started before it really comes down to teh apps you need. I been trying out android on my TP and besides the inaccurate battery meter its actually pretty good. I haven't made the ful switch over yet since I haven't found replacements to all my apps on WinMo but definitely found some good additions on android. Just tried it out for a while loading off the SD card and see how you like it.
Once they get TomTom on Android and that little app that transfers all sounds to your bluetooth headset in wm is when Android will become my prefered choice of OS. I like the idea of beeing able to "Dual Boot" back and forth from WM and Android. I would be completely OK with it if everything worked just using Haret.
As of right now personally I'm not satisfied with android on the tp2 as I was on the Kaiser but if they got that far on a 3+ year old device why not on the Tp2? I'm just hoping no one gives up on it.

Tomtom!?? Screw tomtom! Google maps navigator!!!!
I've used tomtom since my early days using palm phones. I love the ap but google maps make it look obsolete. Once they get the GPS working on our phones I'll probably start using the android WAY way more.
Here are the apps I MUST HAVE to switch 100%
1. calendar exchange - need to know when to get to meetings
2. google market - after download and before install with 2.38gb free on storage and hundreds of mb free on device get not enough storage error. need this to install google voice for free calls.
3. way to get repeating reminders and sms alerts. need to get to meetings or know when I have to call in for something.
4. wireless router app.
5. evernote - haven't checked it prob an app for it.
6. quick upcoming appts view and weather conditions with wind and number of unread messages for each account on home page.
I can reboot for music if needed.
Thanks guys for all your comments.
I decided to run the AOSP 2.1 as I heard Sense UI version causes a few issues.
Everything looks pretty normal, only that unfortunately most of the apps I want to run are not found in the market. (I've heard that developers filter apps based on phone model, locale or features)
The big issue for me is battery life.
I can charge the phone no problem but it always stays at 62% and the battery drains very quickly.
Games-wise: I tried to install a "3D" if you can call it that game called 'Replica Island' and couldn't even run it as it was too laggy, didn't even get past the intro stage. All the other simpler games I have had no problem with. I also installed Scummvm with a plugin/game but don't know where it was saved to on the SD. Most likely that will lag too as it did even in WinMo.
My issues so far:
Cannot get Gen Y Dualboot to work, it just says that Android cannot be found. (When installing Android I used the .rar version not .cab)
Can't get sound to work via earphones. It says "(in call mic and earpiece work)" Does that mean it only works if someone calls me?
Overall user experience in Android is much better than WinMo. In Windows mobile, I have to click many times to get to wanted app or menu entry, while I usually clicks once or twice to get there.
One big thing for me is Google Voice integration. My folks uses phone card from Rebtel to call relatives overseas. Their fingers aren't usually fast enough for Rebtel to accept all digits. Google voice eliminated all the hassle and steps of using phone card. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!!
I really like it and wish they would fix the sound and 3d so that you can run games.... I use it for testing only for now.
No sound, still ?!? Not worth it as a phone device. A play device yes, thats about it. Winmo for me I get to all my apps and prog in just one or two clicks. Learn to use your quicklinks.

Don't lose faith. It takes time because the developers have to go through extensive testing to make sure the features will work properly.
They are most likely focusing on improving the battery life first before they finish porting the other features, because what good is it having sound when the battery drains within 30-60 minutes.
I thought the battery is fine, it's just the readings/meter that is inaccurate
Wish it's not running in software emulation mode too though..it's a bit "laggy" to my taste

Just FYI, it's not emulated, HaRET unloads Windows Mobile and then loads Linux (and eventually Android) like a bootloader. Like Loadlin, if you know what that was. The slowness results from a lack of hardware OpenGL coupled with the fact that the Rhodium is a WVGA device running on an underpowered MSM7xxx chipset. While that lag can be improved upon with proper GPU support and some performance optimizations (and even a little overclocking), this device will never be as fast running Android as the Nexus One, or the Hero, or most other native Android devices.
The touch pro 2 uses the same (or very similar) processor as the Hero, correct? I guess the big "problem" going forward for the TP2 is the higher resolution screen. Even if HW support for graphics rendering comes to fruition for Android on the TP2, the processor will likely be the "bottleneck" in regards to performance..
Here's an odd one for you (considering I can't find anybody else who has this issue):
Some of my games have a random problem where the sound will suddenly cut out on them, and then nothing I do (short of task-killing the program) will bring it back.
The two best examples are Robo Defense and Retro Defense (both on the Market). While playing Robo Defense, sometimes the sound will just die a few minutes into a game, while other times it'll play audio the entire time. No messing with the volume controls, or closing and reopening the program will bring it back. Only task-killing and restarting it will fix it.
In Retro Defense, I'll lose each sound effect one after another (one at a time, not all at once), until I once again have a silent game.
Any suggestions or tips? I have a stock Evo (no root applied or even tried), but I have not applied the OTA patch that's floating around (was waiting to see what root options show up first). I'm not running anything odd as far as software goes that I can figure, and audio otherwise works even if it doesn't in said game.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, as I've stumped my friends who are Android users of other phones.
Are you running the No Ads hack by replacing your /system/etc/hosts file?
i have it with certain apps and gangstar game. its weird but from my experience in android and audio loss... dont even worry about. it may be annoying but until we get some source to fix some things just kinda wait it.

Stock OS (haven't rooted), so no.
And Avalaunchmods - is this (random sound loss) a general Android problem, or something exclusive to the Evo? Strange that afaik, I'm the only person who has brought it up here, no? Why I thought it was a problem on my end to begin with.

ehhh we ran into a huge audio loss issue on heros awhile back. still to this day no one knows why and it only happened to some people. but this is not that bad. it seems like software issue. but i get the same thing and it only lasts in the app. and i do not think i have gotten it in my rooted rom yet. so if your going to root try that and see what happens.
hopefully it goes away for you too
Been playing with my HD7 (TMo USA) for two days now. Main problem's been that it's highly buggy.
I left it overnight to charge, and when I turned it on in the morning, everything was disconnected (no updates from Internet) as the Wifi connection was off. Went to the settings app, and only the first three options (ringtones & sounds, theme, and airplane mode) were even present. The entire rest of the menu panel was not even visible for some reason, so I couldn't enable Wifi.
I then restarted-- it connected to Wifi, slowly loaded one webpage, then when I returned five minutes later, it was in a weird state. Wifi could not be turned on (attempting to turn it on in settings had no effect). Opening IE would load a grayed-out version of the tab selector then crash back to the home screen with any click. Pretty much all apps would load an initial page but then crash whenever any input was submitted (e.g. email address/password for setting up accounts).
Pretty poor so far-- the UI is smooth and hasn't locked up per se (as Windows Mobile always inevitably does), but the inconsistency and random crashes make this feel like alpha software.
Actually it kind of feels like what'd result if you were to put a GPU-accelerated GUI on top of WM 6.x and then forced it to either act in a few seconds or abandon the task. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don't, and the GUI just glosses over as if nothing's wrong.
Anyone else having similar issues?
Hmm...the OS has crashed (causing a reboot) three times today so far-- once when downloading email (in inbox screen), once when loading a particular message, and again when trying to open the Marketplace (froze with one highlighted app, Need for Speed, shown, then 10-15 seconds later, phone restarted).
Wifi's also only intermittently connecting with a strong signal in the area (toggling it on/off doesn't seem to fix it).
There is the possible chance of just having a faulty device, (or simply a faulty MicroSD card which is used for memory. Have you tried a Hard Reset on the device and seeing if the problems resurface? Most people who have used WP7 for the most part so far have not mentioned issues like yours on the vast scale you have.
I've had mine for a couple days now also and it has been perfection as far as operation goes. I did have a bug in IE when I tried to respond to an XDS PM. I tried to delete the accumulated text and it funked up. Couldn't back out to a previous window so had to reboot WP7 to be able to use IE. I was able to tap the windows button and go to the main screen, but I couldn't use IE till after the reboot
had my samsung since launch the 8th
I have not had any problems what so ever!! and i have installed a 32gb class 2 card in connection with the 8gb internal and it runs great no problems to this time never had to reboot or lock ups nothing... most likly you have a bad sd card...
yea i can also report the same, mine is smooth as. what i have been doing of late is leaving my pc on at night, and my phone connected to wifi (charging as well), and it would sync with my pc throughout the night. get up the morning and videos are ready to go for me to take on the train. haven't experienced any difficulties at all yet.
i would report the issue to your carrier and get a replacement handset, or hard reset first to see if it's not just some dodgy build on your phone.
Ive been using my device for 3 days. I've only encountered 1 or two odd problems
1. when i was connected to the uni's wifi and visited weather.com it kinda borked out (i think it had to do with my uni re-directing to a login page to verify identity)
(or it could have been weather.com loading some scripts (didnt see it as a mobile device)
2. i develop for wp7 and sometimes after i deploy an application to my phone, the back button wont work. (sometimes meaning it happened once )
No crashes or anything of that nature though..
Can anyone agree that the shutter speed on the camera is really slow? I am assuming its a windows software issue as the cameras in almost all wp7 devices are the same.
It really sounds like a faulty hardware. 3 crashes in a day? Wow, even my Fuze never did that with XDA builds. From the reviews and experiences from other users here. I'd say you are either alone or one of very few in that experience.
I handled a Focus for few mites yesterday side by side with iPhone 4 and Captivate. Android felt like beta, iphone4 as final RC build and WP7 as RTM in terms of usability. I like and still use my iPhone 2G so nothing against iPhone really.

No crashes or anything of that nature though..

yea, the auto focus and shutter do take their time. it should be really snappy. it should auto focus and take phone pretty much instantly... sadly it isn't the case. hopefully it picks up, though i don't seem them doing this till like WP8.
The main thing is, MS will be doing the updating and that means quality updates for each and every handset out there. But the latest news has me a bit concerned, Balmer selling off so much stock in MS. So far he has sold 49 million shares of MS and is said to sell a total of 74 million eventually. I'm wondering if it's related to WP7 and if there is something we all should be concerned about.

Very interesting indeed. That's a lot of cheese. You got me wondering too.
he has a few hundred million shares if not billions in MS... i believe what he's selling is a mere few percent if that of his shares. Bill Gates sells off that many regularly to support his charities... i wouldn't take much note of it.
Tried hard-resetting, to no effect. It's bad enough that at this point I hope it's an isolated hardware problem, as I wonder what my not so tech-savvy friends/family would do if they bought a WP7 phone and encountered this.
It's been crashing out of apps, freezing at the shutdown "Goodbye" screen, showing UI issues in IE, giving DRM errors in Netflix (and restarting every time Netflix is closed), sometimes not turning the screen off (pressing power key would just lock the phone), etc.
Hopefully T-Mobile can swap this out tomorrow.
(oh and this is attempt 2 at writing this post-- tried it on the HD7 the first time, and after I pressed Submit Reply, the phone dropped Wifi, IE went to an Action Cancelled page, and then the OS crashed)

There is also a change in capital gains tax, he maybe wanted to take advantage or needed some liquid cash. I doubt very much it is anything else!

That definitely sounds like a rogue habdset, I have the HD& and have had hardly any issues.
I really don't think MS is betting the farm on WP7, sure it's important to their lineup, but it's never going to be the money maker like the iPhone is for Apple.
MS makes it's break and butter off OS's(Server and Desktop), Office Suite and XBOX Live.
Everything else is just a plus.
Just to follow up, went and swapped out the phone, and now it's all fine. Guess HTC/T-Mo's quality control needs some work.
When I described all my issues to the people at the T-Mobile store, their response was "it's a Windows phone-- all Windows phones freeze and do things like that" . Finally was able to get them to swap it out though.
Incidentally they had a bunch of HD7s sitting around-- apparently I'm the only one who's actually bought one from the store (and this is in New York) .
i have been using WP7 since it came out in UK, untill yesterday there has been no siginificant issues, couple to times accelrometer didn't work properly but yesterday
marketplace app wouldn't launch
couldn't buy apps on marketplace, can get free apps
twitter app errored out
scrolling in marketplace app got stuck for few mins
had to reboot it twice, back or windows button wouldn't work.

I kind of disagree...from what I've read they are betting on this as they know the future is mobile to a large extent. I believe they will force WP7 to be a success, similar to what they did with Xbox...

And I'm hoping you are 200% correct. Because it means our mobile platform of choice will only get better; will only improve. That means MS will listen to the market (general public, not customizers) and give it what it wants.
Speaking of wants, what the forecast for Angry Birds on WP7?
Now that NoDo is on my phone (thanks everyone!) I now get a chance to use it with my Focus. The first few moments wasn't too promising. The tiles were very unresponsive and the phone ended up rebooting on me. I've never had that happen before. Since then it hasn't done that, but the phone has been slow responding at times. I do need to reboot my phone as often as I did before though. That's probably a Samsung thing.
I haven't seen any real speed increase as a lot of people had been reporting. I guess the Focus was fast enough for me previously that it's just business as usual.
Periodically music still doesn't play out of the speaker after I pull out the headphone while the music is still playing. That was happening before the update and all I need to do is reboot the phone to get the speaker working again.
Unbelieveably, the cut and paste feature gets in the way when writing messages and I need to go back to a certain point. The entire word highlights when I just want the cursor there to start typing. Oh well, better to have it than not.
Bluetooth is a little louder with my headset now, which I'm happy about.
Overall, I'm happy I got the patch since AT&T doesn't seem to want to roll it out, but I'm just not experiencing much more than I got before. Maybe the Marketplace is better, but again, I never really had problems before.
Resuming apps is about twice as fast, now... The first thing I did was start Messenger by Miyowa and "Home" out and then resume it, since it's normally rather slow to resume. The speed increase there is noticeable.
Music pauses when you put a headphone in, or pull it out. That's normal. It's to stop you from missing part of the music, or to stop the music from blasting at full volume if the headset gets mistakenly unplugged...
You didn't really give much information, but if you've been rebooting your phone because of that...
L.O.L.
The highlighting word is an issue that's always existed. It makes it almost impossible to perform quick edits quickly because in most cases it's faster to just type the entire work over again than just add in the letter you need to correct a misspelling.
Marketplace was always a problem app since the platform launched. Before I got hte update earlier, I had to reboot my phone twice because Market did it's free-crash-crash thing. Now that you mentioned it, I need to go download some stuff to see if it freezes/crashes or still have the issue where you have to constantly pause and resume downloads for them to complete...
Marketplace never crashed while downloading anything here, it freezes when browsing apps sometimes. I don't have NoDo installed and probably won't until a solid unlock mechanism is found and published. Just wonder if my Marketplace problem is different from yours.

This actually is not an issue.
Tap and hold on the word and you'll have a nice cursor displayed which you can place anywhere.
True, Marketplace crashes ONLY while browsing.
Whatever installing or upgrades I perform, it works always.

Ah, yes, I guess it is faster resuming apps. I didn't notice it. Thanks for bringing it up.
The music pausing is fine and I understand that, but there are times when the speaker doesn't play music after unplugging the headphones. That's when I reboot.
I've also had to reboot the phone because it would default back to the screen that we all saw when we first purchased our phones. After rebooting it goes back to seeing my settings. Also there were times when Zune kept saying that I needed to plug into my PC even though it was just plugged in. After rebooting Zune worked fine.
Also, keep in mind that as far as WP7 goes, Samsung devices are problem devices.
There's a reason why AT&T is taking their time testing updates. They were the ones who had to pony up tons of cash when the first one bricked a lot of phones because of the firmware Samsung put on thoes phones. After that episode you can't really blame AT&T for taking their time. There were similar issues on Android phones as well (JI6 for the Vibrant, and some Galaxy S updates in Canada were frying Storage cards in the phone, etc.).
I never said Marketplace crashed while downloading apps, I said the download constantly froze. As in, it would get to 10% and free, then when you paused and resumed it would go to 20% and freeze, etc. all the way up to 100%. It did it a LOT. While browsing apps it would crash frequently, yes, that or freeze up on you.
I did not have my market place crashed after NoDo. It crash a lot before update.
Also I doubt the Samsung blame. All manufacture made some buggy firmwares, most SGS firmwares don't have problems. Just recall the Google firmware that send your message to some random person. If it's Samsung's issue, why Surround and Quantum's updates are also being hold.
After updating my Focus is in general faster. The tiles are responsive as before, loading time slightly improved. I don't have the problems stated in OP.

I'm pretty sure you are the only one who read my statement as stating it's been crashing since the NoDo update...
And the AT&T Firmwares are being held because AT&T had to pay for the Focus debacle. It's all on the same carrier. They will make sure they test the **** out of every phone they have to make sure the incident does not repeat itself.
Samsung's track record speaks for itself - and that is quite OS-agnostic as well...

I certainly can't be the only one that's been experiencing the headphone/speaker problem or the OS reverting back to default. It's possible that nobody else has spoken up about it. Either way it's annoying but certainly not a show stopper.
It was a bit embarrassing last night as I was playing some music through my headphones and I wanted my wife to listen to it. She LOVES the Windows 7 interface and is envious of it. She has an iPhone 3 and thinks the interface is cluttered. I stopped the music, pulled the headphone out, pressed play and the time elapse and progress bar were moving but no sound. This was right after she said she had "phone envy." I had to reboot the phone. I think she lost a little bit of envy after that.

AT&T didn't pony up any cash for bricked phones... Don't give them credit for pushing out the pre-update.. update before anyone else.. They have not released any updates for their WP7 phones yet. But are expected to release in couple weeks.
Doesn't matter, I was talking about the other carriers but since AT&T has the Focus here I tend to just write their name in there. After that debacle no one can blame them for holding back to update. To get mad at AT&T for being supercaution about an update that was bricking a phone they carry is illogical.
Well, ran into another instance where I had to reboot. Tried to make a call using the voice activation and the phone responded with, and I paraphrase, "eh, sonny? Speak up, I can't hear you!" So I tried again and it said "EH?" Rebooted the phone and suddenly it had a hearing aid and it worked perfectly. Whether it's a Samsung Focus bug or not it still exists.
I certainly never encountered anything like that. And Marketplace always downloads everything just fine.
OP your phone seems to give more trouble than usual. Have you considered taking it in to at&t? Go to the store and reproduce the speaker problems and let them exchange the phone for you.
Post nodi, market place no longer crashes period

Sent from my HD7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
So, I just found out my girl got me a Tab S 10.5 for Valentine's Day (best girlfriend EVER!).
She got me the SM-T800NTSEXAR, which is the 32GB version from Best Buy. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-10-5-32gb-titanium-bronze/7093009.p
I am coming from an iPad, which I use to watch movies on, use Alien Blue to read Reddit, play light games on, and read comics and books. I plan to retire this iPad, and use suitable Android apps to replicate my use.
I also have a Note 4. for my everyday phone I will use DataSync to replicate my saved games that Google doesn't mirror automatically (I play mostly Arc: Redux, Sky Force, Zombie Gunship, and Galaxy On Fire 2 HD), MightySMS Tablet (to send SMS from my tablet to my phone), SideSync to actually view my phone screen, Google Books to read ebooks (I wish they allowed folders in that app), and MX Player to view my 1080p MKVs. Oh, and I am using Nova Prime as my launcher and Google Chrome Remote Desktop to RDP into my home server.
I purchased a 128GB microSD to save all the movies and comic (CBR) to (I still have to figure out which comic viewer to use, that allows you to read comics easily off external SD).
Lastly, I have to figure out what is the best method to wirelessly tether from my T-Mobile Note 4 (rooted and ROM'd) using my unlimited data plan, and not my tether plan.
What my question for you fine folk, is which ROM would you guys recommend to use off the bat for this model Tab S? I want to keep it TouchWiz so I don't lose any features like multiwindow, so no Cyangenmod.
Also, any apps or other suggestions you may have?
The rom I would recommend is Iron rom. It has all the touchwiz features and all that. Its smooth and way better than stock. It can also help with battery life (if you tweak the kernel).
Some apps I would suggest is titanium backup for backing up app data on your internal storage or sd card. Another app I would use is greenify. It can hibernate apps that open for no reason which can also save battery. Other than that, I dont know any other apps.
Enjoy your tablet!
Sidesync is a great addition for Samsung devices. I also have the Tab s 10.5 and Note 4 and use both all the time. Its nice to use the tablet to send and receive text messages when away from the phone, like in the kitchen, cooking.... I can only recommend the stock roms, and the newest one from Sam Mobile (T800 - firmwares) which is from Hong Kong (Most are multilingual) and its been the best one so far. I can idle this tablet for days or perhaps weeks and not lose crazy battery. Of course you'll need root (please, with the Knox warranty hardware repair fable...) since Samsung likes to improve the user experience by having dozens and dozens of applications running leading to the lag some mention.
Mine usually has like 5-6 apps running making the tablet insane with no lag and a beautiful screen. I'm using this thing like mission control! Its a remote, I have a Plex server so I can view and stream movies to my various devices around the house (Chromecasts, WD Lives, Samsung TVs), playing music and games, surfing the web, and an excellent book reader (check out Moon Reader Pro)... Oh also my shopping lists (Out of Milk) synced across devices when out in the field. Its a great tablet if you know what your doing with it, and take the time to tweak it a little. And Lollipop is coming soon......

Nice. I have a Plex server as well (I have 84TB in my server at my place), but will also copy movies to the external SD so I don't kill the battery.
How bad is the battery drain using SideSync? For the phone and the tablet?
Are you using the Note 4 as a wireless tether for LTE data when you are out? If yes, how bad is the battery drain? What software are you using for that tether?
Does Moon Reader Pro put books that are in a collection in 1 folder? Say I have a bunch of Tom Clancy books, can I put them in order in a folder? (this is one of the things Google Books doesnt allow you to do)
Thanks again.
Moon reader has a file manager so you can put them anywhere. I don't usually carry my tablet around outside, but I can tether from my Note 4 to the tablet if needed (Galaxy Tools v3.0.4). Sidesync creates a WiFi direct network between your phone and tablet so it can drain, but the phone takes a bigger hit then the tablet.
Also you'll never find a better case then the Samsung Tab S Book Cover (You can find a deal on them from time to time)... I've had many tablets with various cases and none were even close... Its nicely textured, closes completely, has 3 different angles, and access to all ports and buttons, without much additional weight.

I have Reddit is fun, Reddit News, Reddit Now, Reddot Sync, Red Reader Beta, Bacon Reader, Flow, and Pro Reader for Reddit all on my phone. Still haven't picked a favorite yet... Need to get used to something different after spending thousands of (wasted) hours on Alien Blue on my iPad.
As for wallpapers, I have Tornado 3D on my Note 4.. I can't wait to see it on my tablet https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxelus.tornadolivewallpaper&hl=en
But I will try Earth&Moon as well as Reddit News. Thanks!
LOVING the tablet. So much faster than my iPad 4.. Screen is crisp... music sounds louder (due to the 2 side speakers).. and soo much lighter.
As of right now, I am using stock ROM and Reddit News for Reddit. My girl is spending the weekend, so no time to nerd out and root and get my tablet totally customized.
One issue though, is the soft keys. When viewing Reddit or on websites, we always use it portrait style.. Every time my girl uses it, she hits the soft keys with her finger. Because of this she has decided she does not like the tablet (which is great as this means she wont keep grabbing it out of my hands..lol).. but this is an issue.
I saw this for disabling the softkeys and using on screen keys http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-disable-softkeys-enable-navbar-root-t2803900 But I am hoping someone has figured on how to disable the keys when it is portrait and re-enable when it is landscape, which makes a lot more sense.

Rooted and installed IronRom last night.. then used Titanium to restore apps and data from my phone to my tablet. It is working GREAT.
One thing I should mention, is that I thought the wifi in my apartment sucked because of my iPad low wireless speed. In my bedroom, I would only get 1MB-2MB of speed., so I installed a repeater, and only got 10MB-20MB using that. Now with this tablet, I consistently get 20MB speed WITHOUT using the repeater. My 1750AC wireless router just arrived today, and I can't wait to see the speed I get with that.
One more question.. I've had two "crashes" so far. Once when closing tabs on Samsung Web Browser and once when closing a game. The screen just hung for 1-2 minutes (with the game, the game play sound kept going). I tried hitting the menu key, the power key, etc but nothing happened. Finally after the 1-2 min, the screen and menu's would pop up really fast as they finally caught up to my button mashing. I was playing the game during a break and when an associate came by, i hit the home button to get out of the game, and the fact that the sound kept playing, and I couldnt kill it, was not great.. and I couldnt lower the sound volume either. Is there a control-alt-del similar button sequence on this tablet so I can kill anything running?

Hold Power, home, volume up and down buttons at the same time for about 20 seconds. Then it should force a reboot and not run the game.

The tablet is running amazing. Only having 3 issues.
1.) The keyboard that came with Iron Rom from the Note Pro, when typing in emails, would not show suggested words, and auto suggest itself the wrong words constantly. I fixed this by installing Google keyboard.
2.) I set the tablet to use my AC wifi in my house. Using SpeedTest.net app, I successfully tested my speed to hit 150Mb/150Mb (the max of my Verizon FIOS speed). But for some reason (and of course when I was showing it off to a friend), when I tested it, the max speed I could achieve was 20/20. I disabled the 2.4Ghz and made sure the 5.8Ghz was the only one on, changed the channel, etc.. nothing worked. Only when I rebooted the tablet, did I have no issue. This has so far not repeated, but I am not continuously testing my network speed either.
3.) I've had another freeze up. Doing the vol up/down menu and power button reset the tablet. This is the third time this happened.. At first it gets really slow.. my animated wallpaper slows to a crawl or completely stops, and then the buttons stop working. I've installed a CPU task monitor app so I can see what is eating the CPU at that moment as well as a catlog app so I can log it. I have a LOT of apps installed (that I Titaniumed over from my Note 4), so this could be the fault of one of the apps and not the ROM or hardware of the Tab S.
Even with the 3 issues above, I consider this tablet 5 stars and think it is MUCH better than the iPad it replaced. I will try and make a video later of what I can do with it, especially against the iPad. The ONLY concern I have is if Samsung announces their new tablet on March 1st, so I am keeping the receipt in case of that.
