Is it worth installing Android? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Android Development

I'm currently using an EnergyROM w/ Sense 2.5 on my Touch Pro 2 and am happy with everything so far, however my only let down with Windows Mobile is the types of applications made available for it.
I'm wondering whether it's worth me installing Android on my phone for the sake of having better quality applications and games?
Or is it still too early in development for something like that? I remember awhile back people were saying the sound wasn't working.

As far as Android go and whether its worth installing really depends on what type of apps you need. The sound is still not working on the external speaker at the moment as well as some other functions. With your current Windows build you are using, it will still be there. Android is installed on the external storage card. You can switch back after running Android by doing a soft reset.

Actually you dont need to even soft reset (well not with the stylus anyway), just hold down the lower right button and it will ask you to power down? then it starts back up in WM
Some people are using it as their main operating system but I just 'Play' with it. As mentioned ring tones etc is not working yet.

I think he actually means the external storage card. It doesn't hurt to try it out to see if it's something you'll like. You can always go back to WinMo by soft resetting your device.

if android worked as well on my touch pro 2 as well as it does on my touch pro, i would be using it as my daily driver. sound doesnt work, power management doesnt really work, but the apps are good and with sense its very pretty, and i feel i can jump in and play games and stuff without having to worry about not having a phone since it can still make calls are send texts. if the camera, sound, gps where working, and the battery could last for more than 2 hours, i would have no reason to go back into windows really. hopefully the touch pro 3 will be android or something. if just for getting sense on 2.1 in landscape.

20+ hours standby with push email is WAY longer than 2 hours....
Besides, REAL tech flashing geeks wouldn't need to ask this question. Its a matter of trying it yourself, and coming to an educated conclusion on whether or not its worth it for YOU.

As started before it really comes down to teh apps you need. I been trying out android on my TP and besides the inaccurate battery meter its actually pretty good. I haven't made the ful switch over yet since I haven't found replacements to all my apps on WinMo but definitely found some good additions on android. Just tried it out for a while loading off the SD card and see how you like it.

Once they get TomTom on Android and that little app that transfers all sounds to your bluetooth headset in wm is when Android will become my prefered choice of OS. I like the idea of beeing able to "Dual Boot" back and forth from WM and Android. I would be completely OK with it if everything worked just using Haret.
As of right now personally I'm not satisfied with android on the tp2 as I was on the Kaiser but if they got that far on a 3+ year old device why not on the Tp2? I'm just hoping no one gives up on it.

Tomtom!?? Screw tomtom! Google maps navigator!!!!
I've used tomtom since my early days using palm phones. I love the ap but google maps make it look obsolete. Once they get the GPS working on our phones I'll probably start using the android WAY way more.

Here are the apps I MUST HAVE to switch 100%
1. calendar exchange - need to know when to get to meetings
2. google market - after download and before install with 2.38gb free on storage and hundreds of mb free on device get not enough storage error. need this to install google voice for free calls.
3. way to get repeating reminders and sms alerts. need to get to meetings or know when I have to call in for something.
4. wireless router app.
5. evernote - haven't checked it prob an app for it.
6. quick upcoming appts view and weather conditions with wind and number of unread messages for each account on home page.
I can reboot for music if needed.

Thanks guys for all your comments.
I decided to run the AOSP 2.1 as I heard Sense UI version causes a few issues.
Everything looks pretty normal, only that unfortunately most of the apps I want to run are not found in the market. (I've heard that developers filter apps based on phone model, locale or features)
The big issue for me is battery life.
I can charge the phone no problem but it always stays at 62% and the battery drains very quickly.
Games-wise: I tried to install a "3D" if you can call it that game called 'Replica Island' and couldn't even run it as it was too laggy, didn't even get past the intro stage. All the other simpler games I have had no problem with. I also installed Scummvm with a plugin/game but don't know where it was saved to on the SD. Most likely that will lag too as it did even in WinMo.
My issues so far:
Cannot get Gen Y Dualboot to work, it just says that Android cannot be found. (When installing Android I used the .rar version not .cab)
Can't get sound to work via earphones. It says "(in call mic and earpiece work)" Does that mean it only works if someone calls me?

Overall user experience in Android is much better than WinMo. In Windows mobile, I have to click many times to get to wanted app or menu entry, while I usually clicks once or twice to get there.
One big thing for me is Google Voice integration. My folks uses phone card from Rebtel to call relatives overseas. Their fingers aren't usually fast enough for Rebtel to accept all digits. Google voice eliminated all the hassle and steps of using phone card. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!!

I really like it and wish they would fix the sound and 3d so that you can run games.... I use it for testing only for now.

No sound, still ?!? Not worth it as a phone device. A play device yes, thats about it. Winmo for me I get to all my apps and prog in just one or two clicks. Learn to use your quicklinks.

Well, it's fun to play with for 10 minutes, but without working sound it's still pretty useless.
And I'm beginning to think the lack of sound problem will never be resolved

Don't lose faith. It takes time because the developers have to go through extensive testing to make sure the features will work properly.
They are most likely focusing on improving the battery life first before they finish porting the other features, because what good is it having sound when the battery drains within 30-60 minutes.

I thought the battery is fine, it's just the readings/meter that is inaccurate
Wish it's not running in software emulation mode too though..it's a bit "laggy" to my taste

20+ hours of standby with push email running is NOT 30-60 minutes. The battery IS fine, its just the meter that needs work. Charging even works now.

Just FYI, it's not emulated, HaRET unloads Windows Mobile and then loads Linux (and eventually Android) like a bootloader. Like Loadlin, if you know what that was. The slowness results from a lack of hardware OpenGL coupled with the fact that the Rhodium is a WVGA device running on an underpowered MSM7xxx chipset. While that lag can be improved upon with proper GPU support and some performance optimizations (and even a little overclocking), this device will never be as fast running Android as the Nexus One, or the Hero, or most other native Android devices.

The touch pro 2 uses the same (or very similar) processor as the Hero, correct? I guess the big "problem" going forward for the TP2 is the higher resolution screen. Even if HW support for graphics rendering comes to fruition for Android on the TP2, the processor will likely be the "bottleneck" in regards to performance..

Several issues and annoyances with Tilt2

My wife and I each purchased Tilt2's earlier this week. We both come from Windows Mobile 6.1 phones and are generally happy with WinMo products and comfortable with tweaking them.
We're both having some trouble with the Tilt2 and I'm hoping that someone here might be able to help.
1) Bluetooth sound quality - we each use Bluetooth headsets and have noticed lots of crackling unless the phone is turned with the back facing the headset. This didn't happen with our previous phones (same headsets) unless we got 15-20 feet away from the phone.
2) Dropped calls - I've noticed a ton of dropped calls when I'm talking on the phone and driving along my normal work commute. There are 1-2 holes along the route where my previous phone would drop, but this one drops 5-6 times. I found these radio updates in the ROM forum. Would that help?
3) General performance - The phone seems a little bit laggy and slow to react. Nothing like what we saw in demo videos on sites like wmexperts.com. My wife even reports that hers has completely locked up on her before. And I've noticed a severe lag waiting for the phone to come back after I've flipped the keyboard out. I assume that installing a custom ROM would help with this as it's helped on previous phones we've owned. However, there isn't a 100% working AT&T ROM to revert to yet (only one that appears to work is missing radio and bootsplash at this point) in case the custom ROM doesn't perform better, so I'm a little leary of doing it. Should I be worried? Or will the custom ROMs here help get rid of the lagginess.
4) Switching to landscape mode - My wife told me that her phone isn't always switching to landscape mode. She doesn't have any apps installed yet so I'm assuming it's in all of the default screens. Should everything work in landscape mode?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I figured that she might be using an app that doesn't work in landscape since I haven't come across it yet.
Also, regarding #2, I should have mentioned that I have 4.48.25.20 as my current radio.
1) I use Jabra 2nd gen and mine is working great. A little crackling sound but nothing major.
2) Depend on the area you live and coverage, you might want to try different radio. I have stock radio and mine is working great. Better than my fuze was actually. I can get 1 or more bar than Fuze and call quality is super clear. No drop calls yet while I had like 2-3 drop calls with my fuze.
3) I am still running on stock rom and yes indeed it's slow and sluggish. I have to reset the phone physically sometimes. I am not too happy about moving the battery cover just to reset as well. With custom rom, the phone will be snappy since some people are running custom rom with their Tilt2 already. I am in the same boat as you. Waiting for the complete stock rom dump. Until then.
4) Not all the landscape work as you have already found out.
I use a BlueAnt and my BT reception is good.
I thought mine was slow at first but as I tweaked it a bit, turning off alerts and pop ups, it SEEMS to be more of what I expected.
Haven't had a dropped call issue.
But, I am thinking that I will flash the ROM when something comes along.
Thanks for the replies.
FWIW, my wife uses a Jawbone 2 and the crackling is noticable on both ends of the call. I use a first-gen Jawbone and have nocticed the crackling as well. It seems that it works better when the phone is on the same side of my body as the headset. I did not notice this crackling on my Dash and Blackjack 2 nor her Dash.
I think the dropped calls problem is definitely area related. My wife is currently out of town and it hasn't dropped her calls at all that I know of. And when I'm at home, it's no problem. It's just that on my regular commute, it drops 5-6 times where my previous Dash and Blackjack 2 only dropped once or twice occasionally. I've only made my commute once since I got the Tilt2, so maybe there were some coincidental network issues. That said, call quality has been very good.
I just turned off the new SMS notifications. I've also removed a couple of tabs that I know I'm never going to use (stocks, AT&T, and music) at that seems to have made things a little snappier too.
HAH! Not more than 1-2 minutes after I posted my last message (from my laptop), I went to use the internet connection on my Tilt2 and it locked up. A message appeared asking if I wanted to send error details to MS and then my phone turned off.
Another thing I've noticed is that Opera takes a *really* long time to switch from landscape to portrait. And it seems to be significantly slower than Opera Mini was on my Dash and Blackjack 2. Maybe because Opera Mini is Java-based on those platforms?
My wife is now reporting that her Tilt2 won't unlock unless she slides open the keyboard. Her Exchange connection requires the phone to automatically lock and require a PIN entry. I suggested tapping the power button but that doesn't wake it up, either.
Any suggestions? I'm thinking she might have a bum unit since mine isn't having nearly the trouble hers is.
As far as the lockups, I think there was a thread somewhere about that. Mine doesn't actually lock up but it hangs horribly. Give it 5min or so and it figures itself out, usually involves opening the keyboard at the same time it is launching something, sms in my case.
Suggestion? Hard reset hers and if it continues swap it out.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, she's out of town right now so I actually haven't seen the things she's complaining about first-hand (except for a couple of things that have happened on mine too).
I'll send her instructions for a hard reset and see if she's adventurous enough to try it on her own. The AT&T store near where she's at is exceptionally good - they really know Windows Mobile there and were a big help in getting the phone initially set up. So, worst case, she can go there and have them do it.

Don't run to fast with my advice, I'm a complete noob but hard reset would be the first thing I would try. It is a microsoft product after all and I'm pretty dman lazy to run to the store first.
FWIW- I have a Jawbone 2 and have cracking in the audio. Had it with my Fuze also and have always wondered if it was the headset or phone. I don't think I could keep my fuze in the holster because of the crackling.
I have some slight performance issues, but it's not to bad. Seems mostly relating to minimizing a program and starting a new one.
I have a strange problem with the TF3D photo tab. It's slow to get the image clear. I select an image and then try to scroll through them. It hangs on one, then flips it's orientation (I haven't moved the phone though). Anyone else have issues with the photo tab?

#3 I am running NRG ROM Photon date 10/17 and it is insane on my tilt 2. No radio change either. Stupid fast, eye candy, and never a dropped call or sluggish issues. Link below (5k plus thread, really read the first page to see the versions and Faq's)

I'd like to add that I'm also having some issues with sound and response time.
My phone starts fresh with about 65% of resources used up. After regular phone/contacts usage for an hour I'm at around 70% and after Opera, the phone is done. I can browse or use file explorer or music but there goes the multi-tasking.
I haven't flashed a ROM yet. I just wanted to see what AT&T did with this thing 1st.
One more thing, why did they switch the FN and Shift keys? My brain is having a hard time getting used to it, especially when the shortcuts that require the Fn key are on the bottom row.
I can't really help you out too much, but I haven't been experiencing many of these problems at all, and I'm still on the stock rom, just cleaned it up a bit. Spend some time on the forums and you'll find some good quick hacks to try before you try a new rom.

Good info about your Jawbone issues. I have an old Plantronics headset that I'm not really using anymore. Maybe I'll give that one a try to see if it's just that Jawbones don't like these new versions of HTC phones (it worked great on her Dash).
As for the photos tab, it seems to work ok. Though the first "flip" through the pictures seems to be slower than subsequent flips.
I found that hiding tabs I won't be using like the "AT&T" tab seems to help speed things up. I think I have 3 or 4 hidden.

Yeah, Touch FLO 3D sure is purty. And, now that I have the tabs sorted and hidden the way I like, it's very easy to use.
Just an update...the Energy ROM seems to have cured the dropped calls. With the stock AT&T ROM, calls dropped about 5-6 times on my regular commute. With the Energy ROM, not a single one!
Something that has happened to me now a few times...I get a call on the phone. Caller ID and picture show up fine. Screen turns off..later i turn the screen on and the phone number is not accurate any longer and the picture is gone..
Anyone had this happen to them?

Yep - happened quite often with the stock AT&T ROM. I don't recall seeing it after switching to the Energy ROM.

Me and my kaiser, Android problems...

I tried cyanogenmod6, VaniljEclair RLS7c, polyrhythmic 2.1d, myn's warm donut, even the first froyo...
and I run into the same problems.
1. Some games/apps like Shoot U! Lite, Zenonia and AN3D Benchmark, appear with the graphics heavily distorted, like someone changed it to a diamond shape and scaled it to lengthen the aspect ratio. The app, however works, stuff move around when I touch the screen, but the screen remains distorted. (see the attachment)
2. Android is a tad faster than the windows mobile but I would like to make it even faster, any thoughts?
3a. If I call this phone and close immediately as I hear the beep ( sort of under one second ), the android phone either just vibrates and does nothing, either does nothing and doesn't display someone called. It seems that it needs about 1-2 seconds after the beep the caller hears in the phone, to display someone is calling.
3b. When in an app and when you get called, it shows a black screen, vibrates, and after some good 8-10 seconds, it displays the call screen.
4. How do I access the files on it? It won't mount when I connect it to the pc via usb.
5. When I connect it to a pc with windows 7, it randomly repeats the notification tone and displays I connected it via usb with a pc.
1 and 3a/3b are the most important...
Thanks.
1. can't help you with this
2. Try not to use widgets, as much as possible. I found my device to hang alot, especially with the flip clock widget. installing many programs may affect performance too. use only necessary stuff
try installing the latest kernel, this helps a little as well.
3. OK:
A). I have the same issue, but I think most people won't hang on you after two rings
B). Never had this problem. maybe the app you are using requires great amount of memory, and nothing is left for the phone app. I guest guessing though...
4. Best thing is to use memory card reader.. I tried alot to get ADB working on windows 7 with no luck, the drivers are not available. I read somewhere that if you use Ubuntu, things are much easier
I still don't know how to copy files to the system... I wish someone else could help with this.
5. Again, it's the drivers.. I find this notification tone very irritating.. I just put my device on vibrate, and call it even
3b. this happens to me also. you can answer with green button if you dont need to see who is calling. download taskiller to keep unused background stuff closed
4. if you reboot and hold down the dpad, you can select recovery mode and you will be able to connect to pc.
Well, the 5. seems to have gone away in the latest cyanogenmod builds.
On the 2. , the problem seems to be with multitasking , that's what stresses my kaiser. If I run one game, it goes well. If while I have the game launched, I try to switch to desktop or if someone calls me and launches the dialer, thing go slow.
Also for 5: go to Settings>Sound And Display> then un-check "SD Card notification"
1.
which rom are you using? NAND or SD haret.. if NAND change "panel" in your NBH with nbh editor (is somewhere in this forum, just use search)
2.
You can use Roguetools is overclocking CPU.. max set on 520MHz higher is dangerous for your phone. i think only one disadvantage of it is higher consumption and higher temperature but its not anything bad...
3a+b.
point 2 can help to you.
4.
On phone you can use Astro file manager.. it is on Market.. and through PC? you have 2 options.. first you can unplug SD Card and plug it to adapter and to pc.. or second - you can download FTP Server from Market, and you can connecting to it from your computer through ftp client..
5.
Its problem of Kaiser and Vogue.. now it dont working.. maybe later..
I wanna know any possibility to make my android faster too.
It goes really slow. If I do nothing, like switch between desktop. It's as smooth as even G1.
Once I run something.. and try to switch back to
Desktop. Or try to run calender(whatever build. Calender is slow in all of thm.)
I tried latest kernal. Yet still slow.
Is that possible to change cpu or add some more ram?
I really like keyboard with android.

It's not possible to change the CPU or RAM, since these are not computers with changeable components, however there are a few things you can do to make things run a little smoother, cut down on the work the processor does by disabling a lot of the eye candy in settings/spare parts, use the 'keep launcher in memory' option, try swapper2, to set up a swap file or even swap partition, cut down on widgets, if you don't use it it will still take up memory and cpu cycles.
I have also noticed that 2.2 eats available memory for breakfast, even on my G1 it will start to get really slow after a while, and is often as low as 5-7Mb free ram, and I've noticed kaiser versions do much the same.
Lets face it, at 400MHz the kaiser is about the same as a stock G1, which is fine on donut, or eclair, but really struggles with froyo, and it has the advantage of a little extra memory and scalable clock.
The fastest setup I have found is nand flashed with Polymod 2.1D, or Myn's Warm Donut, every froyo build I have tried gets too slow, even on my G1.

You can use Roguetools is overclocking CPU.. max set on 520MHz higher is dangerous for your phone. i think only one disadvantage of it is higher consumption and higher temperature but its not anything bad...
3a+b.

4.
On phone you can use Astro file manager.. it is on Market.. and through PC? you have 2 options.. first you can unplug SD Card and plug it to adapter and to pc.. or second - you can download FTP Server from Market, and you can connecting to it from your computer through ftp client..

I am using only SD, too chicken to try NAND yet... Maybe when I get a desire or galaxy S...
It seems on Froyo, It rings from the first beep, it launches almost all games, no more tearing and goes well. It's a bit slower than eclair, but hell, it's getting there alright!
So the remaining are 2, 3b, 4 and 5. I am glad I can play zanonia .
I am AMAZED by the power of this forum, I never thought android can run on a 3 year old phone that has absolutely no connection to android.
@hitakeane
Disable all animations and all transition efects, fades, etc.
Disable all wireless data connections
Enable 2g only
Use Launcher Pro with as less widgets and home screens as possible ( I use only 2 home screens)
Use Advanced Task Manager ( blue icon ) and close all.
Disable all synchronizations, data transfers, etc
Uninstall what you do not use.
Reboot OS
Wait till it's warming up (the os), it goes terrible when it's cold.
Use this froyo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715402
It's the fastest for me.
And just wait... It takes alot of hard work to optimize it. A few weeks ago, it didn't even have a camera And now, even youtube plays fluidly ( not on hq ). And the only problems are the performance, battery life and usb connectivity.
Good luck!

Hmm, I've been running Incubus26Jc's Froyo (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712310) for some time now, and for me it's equally fast as the 2.1 VaniljEclair I ran before. You might want to try that one, I'm pretty satisfied. Still not as fast as a phone should work though, but it's better than WiMo.
How does it run after installing a few games and apps and you start putting some widgets?
What radio version do you have? Super froyo lags alot on my kaiser...
I'm using radio 1.71.09.01 if I remember correctly. I don't have a lot of applications installed on Android indeed, nor do I have any games. So maybe it'll get slower if I install more stuff, but so far so good for me.
I had 1.71 and I had some problems with it.
1.65.21.18 is what I use now, and It's better imho: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2210513&postcount=3
But be careful, they say radio is dependent on your location and network .
I know exactly what number 1 is. I've been experimenting and I found out some games don't support QVGA (240×320) and they show up distorted like that. So I tried 320×420 and 320×480 AND they show up normal. So basically the app you got wasn't compatible with QVGA resolution.
Sent from my HTC Kaiser using XDA App
Maybe that's the problem, however, even if froyo isn't still quite optimized for my kaiser, yet, all the games I had a problem with, now run like a charm in froyo.
One more update, do you know why I can't get more than 11 mb of ram free when I close all apps? Maybe that's why it runs so slow...
I have a Kaiser 130 and i have a display issue i tried changing 3-4 androids - 2.2 Froyo, 2.1 Enclair but nothing changed ... My screen still looks like crap
PLEASE HELP ME
Way to necropost?
Could you help me ,please or not?
If you create a thread with more description of your problem then yes. Include what kernel you are using, what panel type, any other pertinent settings and what build. Also does the screen work fine in WM. Those are good details to include rather then going to a almost 6 month old thread and saying I have this issue to!

Most functional Android rom

I just flashed my Kaiser with Fat Free Froyo RLS5. I really like the Android OS, but the lack of functionality is bothersome. I can't type into the Google search bar that is on the desktop, the camera doesn't work and, worst of all, the USB to PC data connection is inoperable. These things along with some other minor things like the fact that I can't change the volume of the alarm clock make me want to try a different flavor. I've only been using it for about an hour and already found all these problems so I can image that there are more.
All I am looking for it a version of Android that will allow me to use the camera, browse my SD card from my PC, and has a working WiFi. Speed is also a concern.
If I could get some suggestions I would be appreciative.
Thank you.

Camera not working is related to your kernel/radio rom. Also you could use not so super froyo if you want the same with more features. If you want more speed I suggest a Cyanogen based rom as these are the fastest currently. I suggest changing your kernel to l1qu1ds latest .32 kernel via the thread that is stickied at the top.
USB to pc is not working through my computer right now but adb is at least. What I do for data transfer is just use System on NAND and Data on SD and use a card reader for the data.
Lastly, remember that android on the Kaiser is by no means perfect and is still more or less of a thing to be like "Look what my old phone can do!" thing. If you want everything perfect then Windows mobile has that already. Otherwise if you want a cooler newer OS on your phone then its going to take a little time for us. We have come a long ways but not all the way there yet.

That part really isn't a big deal; I probably would never even use it. It was just one of the many small glitches I was noticing during normal use. Things like there being no way to bring the phone back from sleeping except the power button (not even opening it!). At one point, when it is just sitting on my desk, the screen turned white and the phone was completely unresponsive. I had to hard reset it. They keyboard works except when dialing a number where it seems completely random.
If there is a workaround to these things, I'm fine with doing some personalizing, but if not, I would like to know if there are flavors that don't have these kinds of issues.
I think I will try Cyanogen like you suggested and see if I like it any better.
Thanks again for the help.

the white screen is a known issue apparently overclocking improves this
White screen is present when the system didn't draw the screen before it power up.
When you overclock the system is faster so it spend less time to draw the interface.
Sometimes you have with screen when the system sleep but it can't resume because the main app crashes.

I have tried four different Android builds now and I haven't gotten a USB data connection with any of them. I noticed that one of them had a Network option, as though I might be able to browse files of computers on the network which would solve my problem. Unfortunately, that particular build just says "Error" when I try to turn WiFi on.
Is there an android app I can install that will allow me to transfer files between my phone and a PC? That is really the number one priority right now. To test these Android builds I have been reverting back to WMP every time I want to try a different one because I need to put the androidinstall.tar onto my card. I tried loading a bunch of different ones on the card to avoid this, but I get "Permission denied" when I try to rename a file in the andboot folder.
Thanks again.

I have a kaiser with froyo kernel 2.6.32 date 9.9.2010 I have overclocked with atools to 500 mhz and also overclocked the GPU, battery is standard setting. My radio is Neon 1.65.24.36 Together with thoughtlesskyle`s (thank you!!) fat free release 5, i have a very stable situation here. I have to admit i am not a heavy user. Merely phonecalls and sms (or whatsup) and sygic navigation software . I only have to reboot once a week. I am not sure why, maybe because i use cachemate once a while.
For connection between pc and kaiser i use SD Share Dual Mount. It works perfectly. I had flashed the latest kernel(s) of l1q1d because of the alleged stable reboots. I am sad that i did not have stable reboots, it got stuck and i had to reinstall my apk`s again. And most important for me, the SD Share did not work with the latest kernel(s), thats why i reverted back to the 9.9.2010 one.
As for the white screen, it only happens to me if my kaiser goes asleep and i awake it immediately. If i take some seconds between asleep and awakening, it`s okay.
I have to thank many people here to be able to use my kaiser like i bought it yesterday or so. Maybe someone can try my settings and profit from it, like i do.

NoDo changes

Besides the C&P and faster apps, there is virtually no other changes with NoDo...
i have no idea what MS are talking about regarding bluetooth, i see no difference before and now, still crappy sound. The same with camera settings (better stability switching from photo to video???).
I guess the most important thing is the stability of the system right now.
Ah well, time to wait for mango
Market works much better now.
So you haven't actually launched a game, or an app at all yet? Not gone into the Marketplace yet? Marketplace used to be a nightmare, and you needed third party search apps to actually look around...now it is ... SO SMOOTH :'')
And apps launch noticeably faster, and app switching (with back button) as well as apps running after screen lock/unlock are much quicker to load.
There are definitely other unnoticed bug fixes as well. Also, WiFi stores more profiles (still won't allow manual network config though), and some changes to About page in settings...
Overall it is a minor update.
yes i mentioned besides the stability and faster apps update, the bluetooth and camera updates were not significant (since MS stated that on their update page so i was expecting at least a little bit of improvement from there.
I was really hoping to start using my bluetooth headset with my Mozart... guess ill have to wait longer then.

Now that M$ have put Cut/copy and paste into WP7 can anyone please check and see if you can move calendar entries around like we used to be able to do in Windows Mbile?
I just want to be able to (both) copy or cut and paste a calendar entry to another day. Not the text within an entry, but the whole entry. In my work I usually need to go to a customer's house two or three times. I need to be able to cut or copy an entry and move it. I'm currently stuck on WM6.5 because of this.

in short no. Its not exactly a priority feature. Wouldn't be shocked if it never made it.
Far out...thanks. That screws me over in a big way. I literally have no alternative other than carrying a laptop around and moving calendar entries around in Outlook.
Removing this (standard WM feature) makes no sense to me.

It was never a matter of removal, WP7 was built from the ground up as an independent OS. Windows Mobile had a ton of functions that WP7 doesn't because for the most part they were completely unnecessary and just bogged down an already fairly laggy OS. I mean honestly, how many times a day do you have to rearrange a number of calendar appointments? I can't see how it could be enough to lug around a laptop everywhere you go...

Perhaps not a priority feature as such, but the thing is - had they implemented CnP correctly we would have been able to copy/cut images, photos, calendar entries et all instead of just plain text.
OS support is already there, what is missing is high-level support in their first-party "apps" and APIs.
They [Microsoft] said that CnP was always on the roadmap for WP7 but pulled from RTM as it wasn't polished enough. IMO what they did was simply to bundle their existing CnP code with some bugfixes and performance tweaks in order to deliver an update in January (which was subsequentially moved to late March). I would be very surprised if there isn't a more polished implementation in WP7.5.

This is where the PR and marketing people lied to you. WP7 is built on the same old Windows CE as WM6.5 (more or less). The OS has been around for a decade in one form or another. WP7 is basically a new GUI.
I would not be surprised to see a convergance of Windows CE and Windows 8 in the future - once Windows proper can run on Arm I see no reason to keep on top of two different codebases. WP8 will, IMO, be running with Windows 8 under the hood.

The problems with bluetooth headsets;
1. Random dropouts when listening to music
2. Occasionally the phone drops the connection to the headset entirely and you have to force a disconnect / reconnect manually
3. Headset button longpress does not start voice control
4. Headset microphone cannot be used for voice control
5. Videos do not output their sound to the headset
6. Because of (5), games with video segments cannot be played using a BT headset unless you want to periodically blast people nearby when the videos play

AMEN! This was the main thing I was hoping would be fixed in NODO. I hope a small incremental update will fix this before MANGO...
With my Blueant Q2 the sound has noticeably improved. I've never had any issues with the headset as I always carry my phone in my right pocket, and wear my headset on my right ear... Just out of habit, I'm right handed. However, if I were laying down with the phone on my left, at times I would hear static. That appears to be gone in the 4 or so hours I've been using it now. Other issues with the headset are the headsets issue, I assume Blueant will improve it with their much needed firmware update...

1. Never happened to me.
2. ^
3 & 4. I can use the provided features just fine, the problems you are implying aren't bluetooth problems, but search function limitations...
5 & 6. Haven't tried.
I also think C&P in integrated so much more nicely than I would have expected. For instance, if you go into a contact's information, and hold down on their phone number, the option to copy it pops up. That is a feature I personally never saw demoed and I am very happy it has been included, it definitely makes up for the lack of an ability to paste contact cards. The whole implementation is also much smoother than I expected, and also looks much 'prettier' in person than it did in videos.
The apps are smoother, not only in their load times, but also in their pivot controls. I kept hearing this had been altered in this update, and a few apps have confirmed this for me, with the exception of the horribly laggy Board Express Pro. The games I play the most to kill time (Spades, Hearts, etc) load much, much quicker. The OS is definitely smoother, and it's a big plus on the HTC devices that they unexcusably decided to use SD cards on.
I don't really need to speak about the market, as most people have beaten it to death already, but it's much smoother. No longer opening an entry and waiting a day for it to load the information. Also, when downloading an app, the whole process is faster and smoother, aside from the download which is connection dependent obviously. Going through the app list, and pages is a pleasure now, no longer a hassle, though I never really experienced the crash that others had so often. The section specific search is also a huge plus, no more music entries when I'm looking for apps, love that inclusion.
Settings have also been adjusted, but most noticeably, especially probably more for us on this forum who understand security is the inclusion of the MAC address in the about screen. I had to jump through hoops to set up my phone on my home network just because this wasn't listed. Also, it appears my network connection is more stable now. At times in the past, when I would wake the phone from sleep, I would have to wait a good 2 minutes for it to reconnect to a network, now it's almost instant, every time so far.
Camera appears to load slighty faster, and at least for me, it has also started focused already, rather than having to focus. It also seems to be smoother, transitioning through the settings and such. I, for one, am glad the settings don't save, and agree this is a 'feature' - those of you who complain about the video settings not being saved (HD settings) have to understand how much more space that consumes, and the average user would have no idea. With the exclusion of swappable storage, I think that's a BIG plus... Though, they should have some out of norm way to force it, just to make users happy.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to be specific. I'm sure I'll find more goodies as I play with the phone more, and I'll try to post them as I go along. I'm very pleased with this update, especially considering how 'minor' it is.

I too can use the voice control fine, with a long press of the WINDOWS button and not havin a bluetooth headset connected.
But with a bluetooth headset connected, the longpress of the headset doesn't start voice control as you would expect. However you can longpress the WINDOWS button still, and though that starts the voice control software, because it's trying to use the microphone in the bluetooth headset, and that doesn't seem to work, you cannot issue any voice commands. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't disable the microphone in the phone itself.
Basically, if you use a bluetooth headset, you cannot use voice commands, but if you disconnect your headset, you can.
This is not a "Search function limitation", I'm not talking about search, I'm talking about voice commands.
Cheers

For Nodo
Not having Marketplace freeze on me every other time I browse on it (requiring a reboot) is NIGHT and DAY!
Much, much faster....
Just a heads up, I did a hard reset after NoDo forced-update, b/c I had lost 3rd Party Live Tile functionality, and I believe that it runs even smoother after the clean-up. Plus, as soon as I synced w/ Zune, it started downloading all the apps I had on it previously...didn't realize that little bonus.

New Xperia Play owner - Multiple issues

I've owned my Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G (R800at) for a week and a half now. It's actually my first Android experience and I am having serious iOS withdrawls despite being an adamant critic of many things Apple/iOS. Well, I did install it on my HP TouchPad a few weeks ago but I haven't really poked around yet.
Anyway, when I first charged it, it took almost all day. I was using it while charging it, but it still seemed ridiculously slow. After that, I would find it draining excessively fast despite only having a couple downloaded apps (OpenWatch, Pandora, etc) and rebooting to make sure that they were closed. Twice in the first week I set my alarm and woke to find it had drained completely and shut off (no alarm). This is inconsistent: other days it seems fine. I'm stumped bue, perhaps it doesn't like being on an AT&T Micro Cell? More testing required for that theory.
Anyway, I also noticed that performance is inexplicably bad some times and not others. After a fresh restart, my home screen will freeze and prompt to wait or force-quit. This seems completely random and it affects other apps too. For example, I'll start an SNES emulator and find it unplayable about half the time (choppy FPS and stuttering audio) and perfectly playable other times (no noticable frameskip or audio stuttering). If I reboot the phone first, you would expect results to be consistent but they often are not and I get the same choppy performance. Though I seem to have better performance with SNES9x Ex, both it and SNES A.D. have this issue.
If this is related to SD card performance, I've noticed that some shortcuts on my home screens take a while to load from the SD card and have disappeared entirely on more than one occasion (had to recreate them).
Anyway, I see reviews praising the performance in emulators and the decent battery life with no mention of these issues, which leads me to believe that something is seriously wrong. How useful is an alarm that dies in less than one sleep session? It's bad enough that it doesn't have a timer function (seriously?).
Speaking of emulators, I am picky when it comes to classic games and I can perceive that there is definitely latency in the games I have tried. I play on a level that requires instant response so many players may never notice, but there are only so many times I can run off a ledge that I would have jumped off of safely before I have to wonder if there is some inherant latency in the input method. I'm sure the emulator authors are more likely to blame but none of the other native games seem to require that level of precision for me to tell. Has anyone made any kind of test program to measure latency?
Now, the AT&T sales associate told me that I would have visual voicemail. I do not and I had no voicemail at all for the first week (traditional VM could not be set up over the phone; had to be corrected on their end). Having no Android experience, I just assumed that all Android phone supported it along with major carriers and traditional VM was included only for unsupported carriers. Was I wrong? I also assumed that there would be Android equivalents for all the basic iOS apps like Notes, Clock (with timer/stop-watch functions), screen capture function, and battery percentage in the status bar, but I know now that this is not the case (sorely disappointed; patent disputes to blame?). I looked on Sony Ericsson's webpage and see that they once advertised that the Xperia Play had Panoramic Camera with Touch-to-Focus but they edited it out, which I only discovered when I tried to snap a photo of some notes and found it impossible to focus. The forums were in a tizzy over that, after they had edited that unsupported and falsely advertised feature out when I noticed another feature that was missing and STILL ADVERTISED. Many times I had wanted to use the screen capture function but had not yet had the chance to look up how, but the online feature page clearly said that it was activated with a touch of the Power/Lock button, which I had used many times. When it turned out to be another example of an unsupported feature that was advertised for this phone, I began to wonder if the AT&T sales person was the one at fault or if he were duped by an earlier list that included VVM.
Yes. I know I can approximate VVM functionality through Google Voice and I plan to. I am still disappointed that I can't fully integrate it with native text messaging like SMS GV Extensions could on a jailbroken iDevice, especially now that Apple does something similar with iMessage (I do not have a texting plan).
I have another similar example. I was wondering why the Xperia exclusives weren't all listed together under the "Play Games" browser that can be set to launch when opened. I found a reference to the launcher that includes it in the phone's built-in "User Guide," which always gives some error about not being able to find a user guide before displaying it anyway. So, the reference said that it can be set to auto-launch when the phone is opened just like the "Play Games" interface. The option is clearly not there. That's probably just an example of them getting confused by their own confusing attempts to simplify things. There should be a central and configurable way to launch all games but there is no option in the "Play Games" interface to add or link to your own games or the other Xperia exclusives. Having Need For Speed Shift on the full app drawer listing only with Need For Speed Pursuit on the "Play Games" app and Crash Bandicoot on the Playstation Pocket app that only accessible through the full app drawer listing just means you have a ton of places to go before you even know what games came pre-loaded on the phone! I have a co-worker who's played my phone nightly for NFSP and doesn't even know it also includes NFSS (I won't tell him so that I can have a little more time with my phone ). It turns out that he's a long-time Android user too. FWIW, I *refuse* to call either PS Pocket or Play Games an "XMB" like so many others have refered to it as because it is *not*. The "Xross Media Bar" refers to a user interface that includes a list of catergories intersecting with sub-categories, which this certainly does not. Think of a rail-road "x-ing." A wavy, colored, background does not an XMB make.
So I'm going to see if I can swap out the phone if there is a hardware problem causing my battery and performance woes but that leads me to my next question: What if I have to swap it out after the free games are no longer offered? Can I keep the exclusives that are on there? Before I get flamed for not searching that question, I'll search the "how" of the matter later and only ask in case a quick answer can be included to my other problems.
Thanks in advance!
What firmware are you running? 2.3.2 I know has battery issues, Though running 2.3.4 its fine, Ermm contact Sony Ericsson about it.

It took forever to charge on 2.3.3 and I upgraded to 2.3.4 before I could fully test but I just exchanged it and got another with 2.3.3. I'll be using it a couple days on 2.3.3 without OpenWatch to see if that had anything to do with it.
Thanks!
Explain to me how to update to 2.3.4 I'm on 2.3.3 and I'm having more problems then spittle with this phone lag randomx ghost actions and such I'm about to trade this thing in.... everytime I go to update it says no updates found wait 24hours and I have the 4g play

I'm assuming that it was 2.3.4 because I heard that it was the latest available and I used the Sony Ericsson PC companion app to find the latest update and apply it but I no longer have that one to see if it was truly 2.3.4.
The new phone had LESS than 200MB available out of the box and I am almost positive that all the performance and stability issues were caused by the ridiculously limited storage while the charging issues were likely a hardware problem. I doubt Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is going to free up much, if any, additional space, so I have to wonder how they expect us to upgrade without hacking out all the bloat or them deliberately removing most of the crap despite the fact that they are still advertising features that have yet to be added ("Screen Capture" and "Gesture input"). My Google Voice/Voicemail issues are probably cause by a configuration issue on AT&T's end.
Screen Capture is only available in 2.3.4.
If by gesture input you mean swipe from one letter to another to build up a word then that is on 2.3.4 and must be enabled. I stumbled upon it yesterday in the options and it works ok, seems to get confused with some words. I tried to input "functionality" five times before I gave up and typed it in.
As for upgrading you can either wait for your carrier or use wotanserver, depending on your phone.
You can root and use titanium backup to either freeze, or backup and remove the bloat. Made a big difference in performance and battery life on my device.
God! Maybe u bought the bad piece, (u know 1 of 1xxx made phones are bad) XD i dont know but u should send a e-mail to Sony Ericsson... well to Sony or to Ericsson i dont know cus i heard Sony Ericsson doest exist any more =S
My phone charges VERY FAST... I think the phone maybe faulty..

Also, I see that the original poster may be on AT&T. To my knowledge, we haven't gotten the 2.3.4 update yet. I'm on 2.3.3, and I haven't been given the option to update.
Also, about the emulation. If you are unhappy with the emulation on this phone, I don't know what to tell you man, unless you do have a faulty phone. Of all of the devices I've ran NES emulators on, including iPhone 3G, iPad2, old Windows Mobile, my DS and even PCs with wireless gamepads, this phone does an exceptional job! Maybe the PSone and N64 emulators aren't quite spot on, but I'm pretty sure this will be the device I finally finish Ghosts N Goblins on.
I'm thinking either you have something severely consuming your CPU, or you have a defective phone. Is your phone warm to the touch after you charge it, or just simply warm all day long? If I don't tinker with my phone all day, or make calls on it, it can go two days on one charge. Also, I'm using the stock AT&T rom, only removed AT&T navigator and a couple of other bloatwares. I really don't think I removed anything that would be consuming my battery though.
Also, your question on the games showing up in the Play Games menu. You can take a look at this post in the forums. He has a download to get a few emulators in the Play Games menu, and has a link explaining how you can add them yourself on other games. I've been successful on a few, and not on some others. To make the story short though, it's up to the developer to add the icon to the menu.

Yes. After I pointed out on Sony Ericsson's forums that the feature wasn't there, they added a note that it required a software update. That update still isn't available. I'm specifically talking about the Xperia PLAY 4G features page, which means AT&T. Can wotanserver update an R800at to 2.3.4 and retain HSPA+ ("4G speeds")? Everything I read talks about the R800i.

Even my replacement could not be described as charging "very fast." I used it for three days without installing any apps and deleting and turning off as many of theirs as possible and it is much better, but I obviously bought this phone to use it so I'll soon know if the issues return after I start loading it with software again.

You are right. I'm on 2.3.3. I do recall getting an update on my last one and assumed that it must have been 2.3.4. IIRC, I got it through the companion app (not OTA).

I'm saying that there is a perceptible latency in the one I tested that makes expert-level gaming impossible, but it's likely from the emulator author and another emulator may not have the issue (tested NESoid). I just wanted to know for sure.
Most gamers would never notice. I play Donkey Kong Country on my Sony XBR television with an actual SNES and I start firing out of the barrel cannons in the wrong directions, running right off cliffs, and jumping too late to avoid enemies until I turn off the image filtering options and enable game mode. Suddenly, even though I'm pressing them with the same timing, I now fire in time, jump before running off a cliff, and jump before hitting enemies. The latency matters to me because I play where a spilt second matters but most would never know.

It was intermittent. Sometimes I would find it inexplicably warm and I would restart it. The new one hasn't done that but I haven't loaded a single app. I think that even a few apps uses all the remaining storage and one of the internal porcesses to Timescape or some other SE customization goes crazy under this condition.

Thank you very much! Still, if it's up to the game maker, what is Sony's excuse for fragmenting "Play Games" and "Playstation Pocket?" They need to set the example! All they really need to do is let me add games to it the same as adding a shortcut to the Start menu on a Windows PC.
