1 Month with the PD - thoughts - Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design Questions & Answers

It has been a month since I got the PD.
Some brief thoughts based upon my experience with the phone.
I was an Apple user since they launched the iPhone in 2007. Nothing to do with the perpetual Apple vs. Android debate, just iOS suited my purposes, that's all.
I was using the HTC 10/BB DTEK50/Priv for a while, as a second phone.
I got fairly used to the operating system and to be honest, they are all very similar. But carrying 2, sometimes 3 phones was becoming a right pain, so looked for a good dual sim phone that would run two What's app accounts simultaneously.
Enter the PD. Easily love at first sight. I said this was my "jumping off point".
Wasn't very easy to get hold of, where I live, so had to wait almost a month and PAID-A-LOT-!! LOL
What a truly beautiful phone. I have used every Apple phone ever made, every BB phone made, 2 Vertu's (UGHH), and hand on my heart can say, I still cannot stop looking at it.
I had a major issue after setting it up, which is discussed in another thread.
I had no home screen icons or apps visible, only a blank screen that allowed calls and messages to come through in the status bar, could enter settings, but that was it.
The eventual solution, after almost suffering a heart attack, was to load both sims in, and then ejecting the sim tray. The apps just popped up instantly. Very strange, indeed.
After that, everything has been super easy.
-Stellar Battery (and I am a heavy user)
-2 whatsapp accounts running - awesome.
-What a lovely screen!
-No complaints with the camera. I like it. Even the slightly synthetic "Leica" look in the Wide Aperture Mode.
-The Fingerprint sensor is absolutely instant.
-EMUI is easy and nice to navigate
-The ability to edit the quick launch(?) icons in the pull down menu is excellent.
Now the bits that are bugging me.
1) No firmware updates. The last one was, I believe, in December, and I still am on B138. This is something that Huawei needs to look into post haste. I have written to them 5 times, till today. No response whatsoever.
2) Notifications - this is the elephant in the room. They are random at best.
All the Settings - Unlimited data Access, Battery Optimizations, Battery Ignore Whitelists, Priority Notifications, etc. are all on, as is oft discussed, and checked, but whatsapp and emails sometimes still do not give me a notification, until I open the app. This IS an issue for me. I am missing time constrained messages all the time. If anyone has a fix or solution for this, I will be very grateful.
3) Keyboard, Sometimes, the keyboard will freeze if the screen sleeps whilst the keyboard is open in an app, and I reopen it.
I have to collapse the keyboard and bring it up again. Not a huge deal, but an annoyance, none the less. Maybe a GBoard thing?
4) Screen Auto Brightness - Takes an age to organize itself. In the dark, it will blind you, before thinking to itself, that it is, indeed, night, and the screen should be a wee bit less bright. The exact opposite in the day - Very dim and then will eventually get off its backside and decide to brighten up the screen. Very annoying.
5) How do I change the name of my phone. It's not the Bluetooth and Wifi name. My car still picks it up as Huawei LON-L29, as do apps like Photosync and whilst connecting to my Mac.
6) Photos. Now this may not be a PD Specific issue, but when I transferred my 22,000 images across, they all came as a big jumbled mess. No date-wise organization. So looking for specific images, is well, impossible.
7) Music - No equalizer settings in the stock music app. For my specific purposes, unusable, because in my car's bluetooth radio, the bass is overwhelming.
So, apart from these minor points (and 1 big one), I love the phone. I wonder how they could possibly improve it...Firmware, Huawei! Firmware!

For photos delete the cache. That'll sort the jumbled up mess.
For Music Player Google removed the EQ option a few months ago, I hate Play Music now. I use Captune. It has its shortcomings but its the best EQ.
Keyboard - I use Swift with no problems.
My worst issues are the crappy screen protector (GG3) and the lack up updates. I'll be selling it shortly.

I'm enjoying my phone, the only gripe I have with it is the UPDATES.
As for keyboards Try downloading Blackberry Keyboard or Google Keyboard.

Thank you for your suggestions, guys.
I tried clearing the cache, but no joy there. I tried an app called Quickpic, that is apparently supposed to deal with this. Didn't help either.
I was wondering, even if I had to reimport all my image and video files, is there any way they could be sorted by date taken?
This is turning out to be as big of an issue as the notification one, as I depend on images and videos, to send and discuss with my clients. And needless to say, I can't find anything. So am relegated to carrying an iPhone 6s+ just for my media, so I can send the required files via email or WhatsApp. Really, Not an ideal situation.
I will try the BB Keyboard.
Regarding the packaged screen protector, agreed, it is appalling. Before I buy the 2.5/3D tempered glass screen protector, has anyone had any experience with it?
Bonerp, Captune works for me, Thank you.
Have any of you'll worked around the notification bug?
For example, WhatsApp notifications sometimes do not wake the screen, but when a second or third WhatsApp message comes through, it may wake...Or not.
Seriously, if this is such a widely publicized bug, why is Huawei not looking into this?

I tried a curved tempered glass protector and it was awful so binned it. It had tape on the edges and just didn't look good and lost sensitivity.
Have you tried clearing cache at the boot screen or from settings/storage? Might help with the notification bug.
I've sent Huawei several things to fix and just had a 'thank you' response and nothing more. I'm not aware of a notification bug though. I definitely had one on the mate 9 until the first pre release fix was received, but not on this one.
Only other thing I can suggest re pics is delete data, or delete google account, delete cache then add your account again.

How do you guys work around the copy-paste thing?
I mean to having to bring out a paper and pen for copying an email address, phone number, passage from a message or an email is just unacceptable, when this is a widely utilized convenience on other platforms and, I believe, some Android UI's too?
I have tried a few apps that claim they can do this, but no joy.
Also, sharing contacts from the contacts app, only allows vcard, text message and attach to email, no What'sApp, Outlook or any app, for that matter. Can this option be changed somewhere?

quick question
I am looking to get the mate 9 pro; which is the same phone as the PD, just without the fancy branding..
Are any of you on Tmobile in the USA, and, do you get 4G/LTE?
The reseller I have been emailing with on Amazon says you do NOT get 4GLTE on Tmobile in the USA with this phone, but I have read that you do.
Thanks if you can help with this! :good::good:

Windows Phone 7 owners, test an app?

Hey, i just got my dell venue pro today and was finally able to try out my app i created!
I added it to the market on the 15th of oct and it received poor reviews from the guys in the UK (not sure why).
Using it on the dell and it works great.
Anyway i was wondering if you guys could give it a try and give a review of what you thought.
My app is in the Health Fitness section and it is called My Workout.
Description:
It is a handy app that allows you to save your workout routines to an easy to access and easy to read schedule. My app also has a stopwatch and 1 rep max calculator.
It doesn't keep track of workouts, nor does it have any pre-loaded. This was created to allow gym savvy people (anyone who's worked out before) to digitally have their workout routine with them at the gym (i use my phone for music) to replace paper.
Video of app:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVoqy0xYmNg
* BUGS/ FEATURES NOTICED SINCE USING ON REAL DEVICE***
1. The lock screen wipes out any in progress routine that you were entering. Same with stopwatch.. If you are running the stopwatch and the screen locks, the stopwatch will reset. ( will fix with new lock screen guidelines that were just released)
2. I need to make the return key allow for the exercise to be added to your list instead of always hitting the add button.
Discovered that new users to windows phone 7 are oblivious to pivot controls and they love hitting return to enter data. WILL fix the return bug, the pivot control is essential to the metro ui. Cant change that.
* End bugs/features**
If you guys find anything let me know!
Thanks,
Blake
do not mean to hijack this thread but does the venue pro have a sd card slot? if it does it will be the phone i get.
I have nothing to test it on, but I do think the timer should have milliseconds as well.
the dell venue pro does NOT have a sd card slot.
Nice app, wish I had it when I was in the gym.
It's simple and straight to the point. Good to keep up with your routines.
Micro I just tested it in my HD7. Very nice app. I don't go to the Gym. (Too many posers there). Instead I ride my mountain bike and go swimming. Still your app will come in handy to many.
I've just written a brief review on Marketplace and given it 5 stars- user name jfsfoster.
Looks solid, I have two issues, but they're just aesthetic. The flexed arm doesn't really fit in too well with the default icons. I know, silly gripe, but it caught my eye. I'd try something more low key. Such as a round weight.
Remove the white border around Start/Stop and Reset and remove the speedometer graphic. It will fit better with the WP7 look.
These are just my opinions. The actual usefulness of it looks great and I will be downloading it once I find a Venue Pro.
After having friends use the app for the first time (first time wp7 users as well)
The most common problems were:
1. Unable to figure out that the navigation is pivot.
2. Why hitting return doesn't add exercises to the list.
I cant do anything about #1
However i have made some significant changes to how the textbox entry is maintained and have fixed some major bugs:
Disabled the lock screen from enabling via phone idle (microsoft wont like that i bet..) - Had to do it, if you are half way entering data and you set the phone down for 30 seconds it locks and then guess what, NO MORE DATA, you have to start over if you haven't finished the routine.
Allowed for the return (enter) key to add exercises to the list.
fixed misc bugs.
Version 1.4 look for it in about 2 days.
what do you mean navigation is pivot? as in, how they have to slide left/right? people just have to get use to that with the phone, it's not your fault. if they owned the phone, after a couple of days use they would work it out and it would be natural.
what do you mean no more data? i thought the new guidelines said the app could stay alive even if the screen goes to stand by? can you write to isolated storage upon screen lock?
Yes, you are right. People do need to get used to that but what's happening is that they download the app, attempt to use it for 2 min and then rate it 1 star and uninstall. I've noticed many apps getting poor ratings and they seem perfectly fine to me.
You are allowed to run in the background, however you cant have any timers running as per power saving guidelines. So that would mean that my stopwatch would have to be disabled.
I'd rather just disable the phone idle while using my app..
Also as for the data erasing, I write to isolated storage but not until the routine is at a specific point in the process. If you are say entering exercises and you have to go do something and set the phone down and it auto screen locks, the app re-sets and all that data you were entering gets cleared since it didnt get to the isolated storage save point yet.
that is fixed, it's just up to microsoft to see if it passes testing now.
Will download and test it, but can't report back for a few weeks. Can't go to the gym this week and next I'm out of the country.
App updated 11/10/2010
Added the ability for users to import exercises from previously entered routines. This saves time for those who do the same routine throughout the week.

Mango Beta Review

So I am going to try to avoid talking at length about things already mentioned in press reviews unless its super relevant, I really just want to focus on my experience using the Mango beta.
Good things.
It’s freaking fast. Generally moving around the OS is noticeably quicker, not only due the actual speed of transitions, but also I think things have been rearranged so you are able to do what you need to more efficiently. Things are just organized better, e.g. search in the apps list.
Visual voicemail is simple and works (after a quick call to my carrier to turn it on from their end.) It looks like the screen where you choose ringtones with the play button on the left.
The improvements to the People hub are awesome. Groups works great, although I’d like to be able to have more than 20 people per group, and I’d like to be able to rearrange the order they are in. But otherwise, it’s really great. A contacts tile now shows when you have a new message/voicemail/email from them.
The improvements to messaging are also great. Messages you send are now a shade darker or lighter than messages from someone. After attempting to enable Facebook chat a dozen times it finally worked (something I’m assuming will be fixed by release) and chatting works well, switching chat mediums on the fly works better in actual practice than watching someone else do it. Since I don’t really have Windows Live contacts I’m not sure if that part of chat is working.
My one critique is that (like the people hub) I don’t understand why they don’t open the messaging hub to more 3rd party applications. If something like IM+ can connect to all these different chat services, why not allow the OS to? Also, why can’t we still send video?
E-mail works exactly as promised. Linked inboxes and threaded conversations.
Generally the UI has been made more consistent. Marketplace searches now yield a pivot menu to switch between music and apps and podcasts. The phone buttons are larger and more metro-y. The music controls are always in the same place whether in the music player, lock screen, or volume drop down (which itself now has been updated, shows volume as 20/30 instead of little bars.) You can have artist art fade in on the lock screen while listening to music which is pretty cool too.
Bad things/things needing improvement.
When you press the search button, now it ALWAYS brings up Bing and there’s a delay. This is how it should have been from day one, but since it isn’t, I’m still getting used to the fact that I can’t use it to search marketplace or email or any other place where previously the search button took you to an in app search. Also, whenever you do press the search hard button the phone temporarily freezes for a millisecond and music playing skips. Weird but noticeable if you listen to music a lot – but almost certainly a beta issue.
Multi-tasking. It isn’t multitasking. It’s the same as Windows Phone has always been since day one – you can back through previously opened apps. The difference is now you can see more than one at a time. This wouldn’t be so bad if they fixed the transitions, but as of now, it’s honestly pretty bad. You hold back (for a very short amount of time, I did it by accident a lot) and it zooms out (even if nothing else is in the “list” so to speak, I would prefer it does nothing and stays on start screen in this scenario) and you see the “open” (or “dehydrated”) apps, and can pan over to them to click into them. But once you do, they almost 100% of the time go to a different screen than the one you saw in the preview, and after loading look more like the preview. If the preview image matched what you saw when you clicked into the app, this would be an almost flawless illusion of multitasking, but as of now it’s just kind of messy.
Even with the start screen- animated live tiles are not in the same position in the preview as when you click the app, so it becomes visibly obvious that you aren’t actually seeing a live preview. I am really hoping that this is a beta issue, because the idea is good, just the execution is messy. In regard to background apps or audio, I haven’t been able to test this as I can’t find any apps that support it yet.
Internet Explorer 9 Mobile. This has probably been my biggest disappointment. While it most certainly is faster/better than IE now on Windows Phone, the HTML 5 execution doesn’t seem anywhere near as impressive as Microsoft makes it seem. If you go to the MS HTML 5 mobile demos (like the fish and speed reader) they work great… but go to an HTML 5 site, and it barely works, or works really really slowly (like Flash on Android.) Even simple things, like Dragon Age Legends HTML5 mobile version, don’t work at all in some cases. If HTML5 is the industry answer to “why no Flash?” it needs to work better. Every single HTML 5 site I went to either didn’t work, or worked poorly. Not acceptable. Again, I’m hoping this is a beta issue only, and that it’s resolved by release.
Bing navigation. It’s serviceable but just barely. The fact that the map updates, but not the directions, is bizarre. So if you are driving to a destination, the map rotates and moves along with you, but to actually hear what you need to do next, you need to tap the direction. Again, hoping this is a very early version.
Connection to hidden Wifi doesn’t seem to be possible even though the WP devs said it was. And I guess you can use custom ringtones but through a workaround using the Zune software. Also, Wifi sync doesn’t work
So, generally, the Mango beta shows some promise, but still needs a lot of work. I’ll be using it on my main phone for at least a few weeks, then I’ll decide if I want to go back for the time being. For the record, I have an App Hub account and am running Mango legitimately on a developer unlocked T-Mobile USA HD7 which I hard reset after the update. I’ve had a few apps that won’t start, or crash a lot since updating.

Smartwatches: Think Tank (Attn: SONY SMARTWATCH, WIMM, PEBBLE, METAWATCH,MOTO

Having extensive experience with both phone watches and BT-enabled watches, I want to make an important remark to firmware/software developers for these devices, more so after having recently acquired a SONY Smartwatch.
It is simple: NOTIFICATIONS NEED TO BE PUSHED ALL THE WAY. ALL GOODS NEED TO BE DELIVERED.
In the Sony Smartwatch, a vibration accompanied by a Gmail logo is useless. Having me awake the watch, click on ‘Events’, click again on the message and only then being able to see the email message defeats the purpose of immediateness. Probably easier for me to reach out to the phone and see what the notification is about.
The right way to go is simple: everything the phone has in terms of message info needs to be pushed to the watch notification:
“Email from John Doe
To [email protected]
Subject: Dinner on Tue
->And the entire body”
Same with SMS, IM notifications, or anything. Having only the SMS or Gmail or Whatsapp logos and have to hunt down for the message in the watch is absurd.
The way the MBW-150 worked offered way more info at a glance; Sony is moving backward with this minimalistic notification approach. More is needed.
Secondly: let me disable BT on the watch (say when batt is low or overnight) without forcing me to shut down the device -> no time telling anymore.
Third: watch brightness needs to be adjustable from the watch itself (let me manage battery life myself, I’m a grown up).
Fourth: an audio beep won’t kill anyone. When I’m driving, for instance, I cannot feel the phone vibration. A CASIO-style ‘beep-beep’ cannot hurt. While I understand this may involve additional hardware and pose operational complexities, this is a nice-to-have feature.
First two remarks are KEY, and I’d appreciate not only Sony but everybody involved in such development to think a bit smart before pouring a fortune into development.
Anyone has anything else worth highlighting?
Thanks
Sure dude. But first things first... I would scream that let these things display the clock at all times. Failure to do so defeats the whole watch disguise!

I am messing with Customnotifier, GMail notifier (not 2), and RSS (which works best but drains the battery on the phone if set to frequent checks).
In any event, on the watch I only get an icon on the screen, no further info.

Well they are moving in the right direction. With the updated firmware, that was released today, you are able to do a couple more things. You now have an option of leaving new watch faces on at all times. Also with notifications, you can now single tap the new notification icon and it will take you straight to the notification!

Yes indeed. Touchscreen seems a tad more responsive now also, more polished.
Still, notifications need to appear spontaneously -no need to tap- and bightness should be adjustable -too much backlight for me; always staying indoors.
But it's a good step fwd and the app in the phone is more efficient.
Hi, I'm Considering buying this watch simply cos I'm a geek I guess, but, if it is possible for sony to update the firmware/create new apps, and others also to create new apps etc, isn't it almost inevitable that more detailed notifications will be developed eventually? Or am I wrong, is it up to just sony to develope new apps etc, meaning we'll have to wait for just them to decide, taking ages etc? (Unlinke the wimm one for example)..
It does look great, but I agree, notifications really MUST include details, and if this is a future possibility, then I'll get one. (Mainly due to the wimm one not being on sale over here yet! Arrghh!)

The notifications seem detailed to me I mean you see the icon if you want to read the message tap the icon once. I like the screen always on update but I won't use it often since I rather have the battery last through the week.
I've checked back ever so often and there new apps popping up so I think development will only improve. Its honestly one of my favorite phone accessories I would recommend trying it out.

I agree I can't wait til they update to allow adjustment of of the backlight. The notifications I find using the MMS notifier over Sony's I get no delay in the notifications. The Gmail notifier app I use for Gmail sends me the notice without delay also.

Good choice RedRamage. I have the analog Metawatch and expect the new iOS digital version any day. Latest phone console release and functions here
OP - fullly agree with the "at a glance" concept. Metawatch provided this for me and I have the Sony, WIMM, original Liveview and MotoACTV also.
Only very recently I was able to stop using MetaWatch and switch to the Sony only for this. See my blog @ augmentedtraffic.wordpress.com/2012/06/09/finally-true-real-time-at-a-glance-notifications-on-sony-smart-watch (you need to cut & paste into a browser since I have < 10 posts).
I use Tasker/K-9 combined with my app to get "at a glance' on a SonyWatch!
I am still testing battery life, but it seems OK. I haven't put the app on the market as yet as it is very customized to my use cases and it may be a bit too much for others to use. The only thing I am currently missing from the MetaWatch is the next upcoming appointment. I have everything else I was using (notifications at a glance, phone battery life, location, weather). I even added my last Withings scale weigh-in
Ok, I've got both of the 1st Gen MetaWatch models (The bt2 Analog and Digital ones), and maintain a popular fork of the Android MW software (see link in my sig), so I'll try and answer your points in relation to that watch.
1) Yes, MW will display your notifications as soon as the phone does - gmail is a little tricky as google keeps changing/modifying/revoking permissions with the official gmail app, so the information available to the watch manager app can be a little sketchy. If you use k-9 mail, you'll see the sender and subject. It doesn't display body text yet, but that is doable. Gmail would also be fixable by just making the app go to the gmail server directly and pull the message text when the new mail notification comes in.
The fork I maintain has an "Other notifications" Option, that lets you selectively display any android notification, although the OS limits how much information we can actually pull. If anyone has requests for additional notification support, then I'm happy to try adding it, assuming the developer of the app has provided intents or an api to access that information.
Currently notifications will stay on screen for a few seconds, then disappear (except for the SMS notifications, which, on the digital watch can be set to stay on screen until dismissed, as you can see the full body, and scroll) - On the digital watch you can configure a button to redisplay the last notification again if you missed it, and there's an on watch menu of all the previous notifications which is only a few button presses away.
2) Yes, all the MW models have a menu option (on the watch) that let you disable BT without turning off the watch, so you can still tell the time
3) Yes, the Analog MW model has menu options to configure the OLED brightness. There's nothing to configure on the Digital model, as it has an always on LCD screen (though there's an option in my fork of the app to automatically turn on its light when a notification comes in)
4) The MWs don't have a speaker, but they do have a powerful vibrator inside - it's pretty hard to miss it when it does vibrate, and the app lets you configure different vibration patterns for different notifications, so you can know what sort of message it was without even looking.
Let me know if you've got any other questions!
MW has some very good stuff, I'm quite familiar with it.
Pity -both for MW and SW- is the poor pixel density. I believe MOTO has a much better display.
B/W displays appear sub-optimal to me and definitely not the direction the market wants to move toward.
Also, beyond the immediate 'at-a-glance' notification, can you read within the watch the full email or notification in MW? This is also a key element.
One more topic I missed on SW is that once connection is lost we need not only vibration but some on-screen display, like a warning sign or something. This feature prevented me from leaving behind a SGSII in a bar when I was using my ancient MBW-150. Vibration won't typically suffice.
I survive 2.5 full days with heavy notification traffic with my SW. How long you stay unplugged with MW under heavy traffic?
Thanks for the good discussion.

As I said, the current software doesn't support that, but it's something I'm planning on adding.
SMS messages currently support this - you can page through a long message, then dismiss it when you're done, so I just need to add the code to pull out (and strip html from) the body text - I know for certain that it's easily possible using k-9 mail, gmail will probably need work to talk to google's mail server directly to get the message text.

Yes, it'll display a "No watch connection" icon in the top right of the time display, which is pretty hard to miss!

I tend to get 2 or 3 days, depending on what I'm doing - 3 days for medium traffic, 2 for heavy traffic (usually when I'm developing features, so pushing lots of data to the watch)
3 days = Taken off the charger on Monday morning, needs to go back on the charger Wednesday evening before I go to bed.
I could probably get much longer battery life if I manually turned bt off each night, and back in the morning, but I like having my watch vibrate in the morning when the alarm goes off! Perhaps adding a "bt sleep" mode to the firmware would be a good addition.
How long does your battery last on the Sony Smartwatch if you keep the small digital clock on at all times?
I've had my watch a little over a week and haven't been able to make it through the day yet even with minimal notifications. The battery life has been very disappointing.
@benjymous:
I forgot to note that I shut it down when I go to sleep. In the morning I turn it on with no pairing issues, so we'd be looking at 18h/day actual uptime, for a total of say 45h per charge. Not stellar by any means.
@tjrhine:
It didn't even cross my mind to have the screen on full-time. It is obvious you won't make it tremendously far (I think the bat has a capacity below 130). No way. I push the button to get the time, I can live with this.
I also need to report that the glass is far from scratchproof. That's something that really pisses people off. Next HW release should DEFINITELY include at least Gorilla Glass and certainly a bigger battery. The thickness of the plastic clip and the strap can be each reduced by about half a millimeter that combined gives you 1mm that they should invest in a bigger capacity batt.
And obviously, a standard usb port.
Please keep ideas coming folks, thanks.

I'm having exact same problem - Battery lasts barely 8-10 hrs. Do we need replacement watches?

Is anyone else having these many problems?

Hello everyone! I just want to start off saying I love reading this site not only because it's so informative, but yall really help each other out. After stalking these forums extensively, I've come to the conclusion (well hopefully) that I'm the only one experiencing these issues with my tablet. First off, I love this tablet. I just feel like samsung half baked everything about it. The software Is buggy and so is the hardware (I work at an electronics store, and let me tell you, the samsung rep knows all of my problems.) It's rather unfortunate cause this is a very expensive tablet and I was expecting it to run like it's something premium. Lol, I thought.
first off is the display. I know it's gorgeous, but has anyone noticed when you're In an application like Google drive, s note, or even Facebook that the screen dims and brightens automatically? It also happens when I use swype on drive and applications like fb.
Second, the pen input/snote. In snote, has anyone had the issue where, for example, you would write a large area of text (or even smaller area), you cut it then paste it somewhere later in the note. Then, once you start writing again, anything similar to what you just cut out (for example i'll use the the word world). I'll write wor, but when I write the rest, ld, it erases that and shows me the paste symbol there. This is extremely frustrating as I'll be in class on my 3rd or 4th page of notes and this will happen (almost wants me to use my geek squad protection, almost). Yes, even after I clear the clipboard it still happens. I also have a screen shot attached to the other very common error I get in snote, or even in Sketchbook for galaxy. Action memo constantly crashes, I could just open a memo, stare at it for a few seconds and it will "unfortunately stop". ( Or, I mean, it could just be my face, but I would feel better if it was samsungs fault )
third, they keyboard. You would think the tablet with an 8 core (or at least soon to be) processor can handle it. Nopee. Swype just lags after a day or so of use. Not fun. Then, when I use the spen throughout the day, when I change the keyboard method to handwriting recognition it just dissappears. Doesn't even want to let me put one thing in. I've tried turning off the spen detection for the keyboard keyboard and I still get the same issue. When things like like this start popping up, it's time for a reboot. Which I have to do about once or twice twice a week.
Has anyone experienced these things before? Or did I just get my hopes up too high and samsung has failed me?
Thanks
oh and everything is up to date, nothing is custom besides the font, which has no Impact on these problems.
the kb was too laggy for me. i've switched to thumb kb and use tha kb switch app to auto select the samsung kb when I whoop out the spen.
I really think samsung rushed this thing out to beat the ipad release and planned on patches for anything they find.

Azpen Hybrx A1160 Remix OS 2.0 laptop discussions

Just wanted to start a thread to discuss this device. For those not familiar with it, it's a very inexpensive 11.6" laptop that runs RemixOS 2.0 from the factory. It does NOT have a touchscreen and the display is a low resolution (1366x768) TN panel display. The CPU is an Allwinner A64 Cortex A53 quad-core 64-bit processor.
The device I purchased (via their Kickstarter campaign) has 2gb RAM and 32gb storage - and it costs me $89.
Some interesting things I've found so far...
1. To disable the damn "click" sound every time you select something (via the touchpad or a mouse), download the QuickShortcutMaker application from the play store. Then expand the Settings items under the Activities section and find the "Other Sounds" activity. Once you click on the Other Sounds activity, click on "Try" on the right-hand side - this will open the "Other Sounds" dialog where you disable "Touch Sounds"! You can also disable some other sounds here. No idea why Remix doesn't allow access to these sound options. Explore the other Settings activities - there are some other cool things you can do. I also used this app to create "Shortcuts" to specific forums in Tapatalk (something that you do via widgets in standard Android). This QuickShortcutMaker app is pretty damn useful on this device!
2. I've found that I was able to connect my Apple USB->Ethernet adapter to this device and it works! However, it doesn't seem to work with ALL apps. For example, Tapatalk doesn't work with it for some reason - but so far, every other app has worked. You can also access ethernet settings via the QuickShortcutMaker app mentioned above.
3. Enable "Experimental Features" by clicking on the "Kernel Version" section of Settings->About. Once you do this, enable the "Use mouse wheel to simulate swipe gesture". This allows you to zoom in and out of things like web pages, images, etc. To do this, hold down CTRL+ALT while moving the mouse wheel. Apparently, the touchpad on this device does NOT provide pinch-to-zoom functionality, so without this setting, there is no way to zoom in and out in most apps! Kind of a big issue! Unless there is another way that I just don't know about. I know you can CTRL- and CTRL+ to zoom in and out in web pages, but that really just increases the size of the text - not really a true zoom in/out.
4. Gmail app. If you open the Gmail app as a window, you don't get the "split-screen" that you get if you open the app in full screen. But if you open in as a full-screen window and then "restore" it to a smaller window, the split-sceen function still works. I usually just leave Gmail minimized in order to keep the split-screen function active for Gmail.
5. Sometimes, the screen comes back on if you put the device into standby with the power button and then close the lid. I haven't been able to find the exact circumstances where the screen comes back on when closed, but it seems that when it does come on when it's closed, it stays on! Need to figure out why this occurs..
6. Bottom of device gets REALLY hot after any extended use. May be a long-term issue...
7. By default, wifi is set to turn off when in standby (unlike tablets) - unless the device is plugged in - then wifi will stay on. This can all be changed under Settings->Wifi->Advanced. I actually set mine to always turn wifi off when in standby since it seems that the device doesn't actually work while in standby anyway (again, unlike tablets). May help avoid wifi failure over the long-term.
8. I have run into websites (such as microcenter.com) where when you open a drop-down list, there is no way to "scroll" the list if it goes off the screen. To see what I mean, go to microcenter.com and try to set the store location - it opens a drop-down list that goes off the screen and there is no way to scroll down in the list! The "work-around" is to use the down arrow key, but it doesn't work very well (web page wants to update every time you press the down arrow)....
That's about it off the top of my head... It's a shame that this device cannot upgrade to RemixOS 3.0, like was stated in the kickstarted campaign (and later "retracted").
Anyone know how to root this thing?
It's an interesting device for the cost, but what I *really* want is a similar, large'ish device with a higher-quality, higher-resolution touchscreen that is removable from the keyboard - with at least 2gb of RAM (10" and 1gb of RAM isn't enough for RemixOS!) and runs RemixOS 3.0 - so far, I can't seem to find such a device...

I got the same model 2GB w/32GB storage. Do you or anyone know how to get it to charge and or power on. Mine only worked for 2 days, now nothing. I contacted Azpen over a week ago about it and still haven't heard from them. Please help.

I just plugged mine in and it charged fine (blue LED next to charging port turns on when charging and turns off when fully charged).
To turn mine on, I just held down the power button on the keyboard for a while... You can also fully power it off that way as well (if it gets hung or something, which I have managed to do a few times now).
I've *really* put this thing through it's paces over the last few days. Overall, it's a decent device for the price. Personally, I'd rather spend a little more for one with a better, higher-res, removable touchscreen though.
I also have a HP Slatebook 10 x2 - and it's a great device, but stuck on Android 4. Otherwise, it has a MUCH nicer, removable touchscreen and even an extra battery in the keyboard (that charges the tablet when attached). Just wish it was a little bigger (13" or so) and was running Remix OS.
But, for $89, I can't complain, my A1160 actually runs pretty well for what it is...Luckily, I haven't had any issues with mine.

Hello...
@jtrosky, thanks for starting this thread, i've already gotten something out of it... getting rid of that damn clicking every keypress.
It was also nice to find that quickshortcutmaker, thats really a cool app that seems to allow more access than I could find...
Everyone else, hello!
I am an PC user since 84' and an Apple iPad user since, well the day the ipad 2 came out and now I'm on the iPad now. The only reason I say any of this is because the reason I got this Azpen A1160 was to help learn a bit about android and linux. I would also like to figure out how to get to the root...
Knock on wood but I got this three days ago and have literally beaten the software out of it loading, looking, deleting, and I thought I had screwed it up several times but it just keeps on ticking. The back does get a little warm, I haven't actually measured it yet but I'm going to, but I dont think it's too bad. I've run six full charges on battery and worked on it plugged in. (which it doesn't seem to like)
I'm happy with it right now and I think its going be a fun ride. I bet this is going to be a fun place to be in the next couple of months...

Oh - one more thing I found out - and this may be well known already for those more familiar with RemixOS. If you click and hold on the little icons on the bottom-right of the taskbar, you can move them around. So, for example, you can make it so the brightness, volume, bluetooth and wifi icons are always visible, even when that section is "collapsed"...
Also - I *love* having the key to disable the touchpad (the key next to the arrow keys). Since I usually use a bluetooth mouse, it's so nice being able to disable the trackpad so quickly and easily!
Oh - and the Prtscr button on the keyboard brings up the very cool screen capture tool, which let's you select what area of the screen to capture. Very handy tool!
Still not sure what the "Pausc" button does - I'm assuming it's actually a misprint and it's supposed to say "Pause". Gotta love cheap electronics that are made in China!
So far, this device is definitely working well for me. Although, I'm not so sure the screen is big enough to truly take advantage of the RemixOS windowing capabilities... But, it's still better than not having any windowing capabilities.

One more quick tip - there are apps out there that will let you boost the volume of the device. Right now, I'm using Music Volume EQ to boost the volume, but there are probably better apps out there for this purpose... Will explore more later and post an update if I find a better app.

Hello guys, thank you for creating this thread.
Did anyone have any issue by setting up a password for the lock screen?
I did, and it worked for a couple of times, then it started not to recognize the password (password was correct, no caps lock...). Of course it didn't work after reboot as well.
The only option was to remotely reset the device using the google's tool from another pc. Very annoying. Since then never tried to set another security system for the screen lock.
I'm also getting an a problem after turning off the screen: when I try to turn it on again, most of the time I get a blank screen. I have to try several times to get back to remix os.
Did anyone faced this issue as well?

I have not tried setting up the lock screen (I just leave mine unlocked). And no, I have not had any issues with a blank screen when turning the device back up. What's strange is that the device does not automatically turn on when opening the screen - at least not on my device - I have to press the power button.
Your issues are probably because of the poor quality control with these device. Somehow, I lucked out and got a "good one", but many people seem to be having build-quality issues with them...

Great posts and many thanks to the OP.
I got a US 2 pin power plug instead of a UK plug. Does anyone know of a similar products power lead that will fit our A1160?
Need help...
Hi,
First, thanks for creating this thread and posting your tips. Obviously there are not a lot of people using this device yet so it is great to find useful info on it.
Since there is no known root solution yet, I tried installing NetGuard as an adbllocking solution that does not require root. I have used it before without any issues. Unfortunately, on the Azpen, every time that I enable it, it blocks all internet access (it is obviously not supposed to do that). I even tried alternative apps like AdClear and got the exact same result. There is something strange going on with the Azpen. I would really appreciate it if anyone had any pointers as to how I could resolve this.
Thanks...
Welp! I had much higher hopes for this device and I haven't even received mine yet! Will this be rootable?
Thanks for creating this, used both your sound clicking tip and the pinch to zoom in. A bit annoying having your fingers in multiple place to zoom in, but what can you do? I'm a college student and have found that I can't access the net with this device due to it's mac address changing each time. I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this or if mine is the only one. Just thought I would share that.

That is *really* interesting! Sure enough, if I disable and re-enable the wifi, the MAC address does change!! That makes absolutely no sense - I've never seen such a thing!
I'll look into that a little more - but without root, I doubt there is anything that can be done about it. So strange!
One possible option - set wifi to stay enabled all of the time - maybe that way the MAC will stay the same. You can set that in the wifi settings advanced options. I've found that you have to reboot after setting it to always stay active....

So far I have been impressed for the cost of this unit. I have a few concerns and wanted to see if anyone had input:
1. Since the length of the power chord is so short. Is it possible to use a USB to Barrel jack type of adapter to power this? That way you can attach to a portable power bank?
2. battery power, I find it to not last that long and I find it takes forever to charge. I thought that this would last 5-7 hours unplugged, nope. It was supposed to charge within in a hour, nope. Any ideas on this?
I use an external mouse and click on the trackpad disable button. I find it much easier to use the computer when typing.
I'm looking at Pinebook, a notebook having the same AllWinner processor (CortexA53).
It seems this notebook can run all OSs suppoted by Pine64, such as Android, some linux distro, Windows IOT and they are working on a Chroimum porting (try to have a look at the pin64 forum).
Do you think it would be possible to do the same with A1160 ?
Another solution could be PhoenixOs (as pointed out in some comment on Kickstarter).
There are already some devices with CortexA53 processor running PhoenixOS out of the box.
I honestly don't know what OS's can be ported over to this device yet. I have a feeling that it's never going to have a huge user base though, so I wouldn't expect much from the developers out there.
Now that Chromebooks can run Android apps, this device just isn't quite as interesting as it once was. Basically, you can now get an inexpensive, *high quality* Chromebook and still have most of the advantages of this device, plus the high quality and frequent updates part.
To be completely honest, I have very low expectations for this device in the long-term. With how hot it gets after any real usage, I expect the mainboard to fail in short order. We'll see. Although, so far, I've really been using it pretty heavily and it does seem to be holding up, but it's only been about a week....

Something else I recently noticed - and this may already be a well-known thing with RemixOS... If you close an app by clicking the back arrow on the top-left of the window, you continue to get notifications for that app. But if you close it by clicking the "X" in the top-right of the window, it seems to completely the kill the process and you no longer receive notifications (or if it's an app that stays around and puts a "permanent" notification in the notification tray, the "x" seems to completely stop the app as well and removes its notification item).
At least that's what seems to happen...
Also noticed that even if you setup wifi to stay active even with power off, the unit eventually goes into a "deep sleep" where you will no longer get new email notifications, etc. It even seems to turn wifi off after a while (even though it's set to stay on all of the time).
Lastly, if you have an external mouse connected, close the laptop lid and then move the mouse, it turns the screen back on - even while closed!

Hi All,
Saw this in the comments and thought I would chip in with my experience so far.
I got the 64GB version and so far it is the computer I have paid for.
The track pad as everyone said is very crappy, but I just use an external mouse instead so its not a big problem.
I seem to have a good unit and don't have any problems with the unit.
My only gripe is that the battery kinda sucks and after using it intensive for like 3-4 hrs, it will have almost no battery. I wish it came with my UK adapter instead of the US one, but its okay.
Furthermore, is there anyway to put widgets on it? or Use another launcher?
Has anyone tried to root it or tried to install another OS on top of it? I heard that PhoenixOs is possible?

For what it's worth, my trackpad actually works really well. I was surprised to read all of the complaints about it. I'm guessing that a lot of them are defective?
Regarding the widgets, no - there is no way to use Widgets in Remix OS 2.0 (not sure about 3.0), which is a huge limitation. Widgets are one of the things that make Android so powerful - and I miss them big time in Remix OS...
I too would like to know if there is a way to load PhoenixOS on this device. I thought I saw it mentioned somewhere that it would be possible (maybe one of the updates on Kickstarter?). I will see if I can email Azpen about this. RemixOS 2.0 is really good, but not quite "finished" in my opinion...

Hi! Does somebody receive a blank white screen when laptop booting or waking up?
Every time when I push power button I get a blank white screen... How I can fix it?
