New ATT customer with questions. ROM, Tethering, Roaming etc - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm new to ATT but I had a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S2 and now I have ATT's S3. I'm looking to do something comparable to what I had on my S2 which was a stock looking, debloated ROM that supported tethering. I've tries AOKP, AOSP, Paranoid etc but something about a clean trimmed stock ROM setup the way I want it is nice.
Right now I have the stock rooted ICS ROM from the How to ROOT section, running APEX PRO so it looks like stock JB. I de-bloated it with the tool found in that thread too.
I thought I would ask for suggestions before I commit to this setup though.
Also is there a tethering app that works on these or a ROM that is like stock JB that includes it?
Also, do ATT phones roam? Can you use ROAM Control is needed? What carrier do they ROAM to? Does data work? Does any of that cost anything extra? I know I could ROAM on my Sprint over to Verizon and it was just minutes, but I had unlimited so it never mattered. I pretty much stayed on Verizon as ATT's 3G sucked and when roaming I got Verizons 3G with the PRL file I had.
Any info would be great.

Here is the best touchwiz ROM in my opinion.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30548538
This ROM should fit your needs. But i am not too sure about the tethering though.
I will update my post as I go here with more info.

My phone roams and I am on ATT. But I am on cm10 stable at the moment. That's all I know about roaming. I personally don't know about it and have never asked about to my ATT store to see how it would affect me.

[Q] Verizon Wireless Wifi Tether

of course verizon is blocking Free wifi tethering, but when for example CM9 comes out, will wifi tethering be free?? Like Native wifi tether now the Apps.
Pumped for tomarrow Nexus day
I've been searching relentlessly for a way to get Wireless Tether for Root Users to work on my brand new VZW Galaxy Nexus.
No dice. The Dev has been notified.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1257
If you install the latest BETA version and select the Samsung Galaxy S2 under device profiles, it ALMOST works, throughs in error in the log: "Activating WiFi interface.... FAILED"
Totally crushed about this. Not sure if it's happening due to a VZW side safeguard or if it's simply a progrmaming issue the dev can fix :\
Really hope he can fix it easily
I am starting to think VZW has something under the hood preventing ANY of the wireless tethering apps to work. Either I'm wrong or we have to wait for a cooked rom without VZW garbage.
Try running version 2.0.2 wifi tether works on my thunderbolt whereas built in didn't and neither did any newer versions.

Pdanet for tablet will bybass the bluetooth tether app built into the phone. The native bluetooth tether is also pulling the verizon subscription.

I wouldn't be surprised if the stock Wireless Tether app communicates with Verizon directly. It seems like it takes a little too long if it was just checking a file on the phone.
The wifitether guy is apparently working on a fix.

Of course it is talking to verizon, it has the auth check enabled, just like every other verizon phone. What we need to find is a way to disable the check. Sadly I don't think it as easy as a setting to be found in SQLlite. I am thinking maybe comparing the tethering part of the code between the GSM and the CDMA versions.
Don't mean to rub it in guys, but that's exactly why I got stock unlocked GSM version on T-MO rather than evil Verizon garbage.
My laptop hooked up to my t-mo GNex is pulling 8mbit
Once custom ROM builds and custom kernels come out shouldn't this not matter?

Oops I accidentally thanked you for this post.
Now let me rub this in. I get over 10 Mbps download speeds on 4G LTE. We will find a workaround for the lack of tethering eventually.

So charge the phone. You're tethering; you've probably got a laptop or something you can charge it from. It might not actually charge it, but it'll slow down the drain.

[Q] TMO S3, switching to ATT. Any tweaks, rom advice?

Hey all, atm I use the stock rom, rooted for tmobile. (Stock rom isnt that bad for JB tbh.. to my surprise) However I just switched to ATT, waiting on my nano to micro adapter to come in so I can switch back to use it. Now as far as I read, I should have the 3g and 4g bands just fine, I just wont have LTE on ATT, correct? Next up, aside from using titanium backup to force uninstall TMOs software, was wondering, should I change out my rom too or is stock still cool to use for ATT?
That or what is everyone else doing if they took their S3 to ATT or tweaks that could help for network speed etc. That or apps that are good for ATT on it. Thanks.
Anyone? Or is there no tweaks or more ideal rom builds. Atm I mange to get 3-4 Mbps download speeds. Not sure how fast Iphone 5 gets.. Didnt test and dont feel like taking the sim out again tonight lol.
As suggested by the ATT S3 section of the forums, Ill put my post here too with more details on what I could be looking for.
Hello, Just changed from Tmobile to ATT. I already unlocked it, and am running it on 4G. Sad part is, download is only like 1-3 Mbps it seems. While my Iphone 5 can get close to 7 Mbps (Now this is just 4G band, NOT LTE)
So I am wondering if there are some tweaks I need to adjust in the build.prop or anything else. Atm I just use the stock rom thats rooted. (Since it seems nice enough for JB and honestly, I havent figured out which custom rom beats the stock rom 100% without losing any features.
Also noticed I cant install the ATT Visual voicemail as it claims device isnt compatible. (Which that I am sure I can use a build.prop edit for the model. Question is, which model and items do I need to adjust and to what value?)
Anyways, if anyone has some good advice about using the tmobile S3 on ATT and getting it tweaked to be the best it can be, or a rom that is perfect for switching between ATT and Tmobile (should I use my prepay tmo sim in it again) and provide high data speed. Would be great.
Oh also.. just so I know. Can I use the ROMs posted in this ATT section of XDA for the t999 tmo s3 or do I need to still only use roms from the tmo s3 section of xda? Thanks. =)

Not sure about the other stuff, but with regard to this, your phone is still a t999 no matter what carrier you are with. Hardware doesnt change, so I would recommend you stick around in the tmo section.
Some att ROMs may work, but not sure which, so if you DO want to use an att rom, I would suggest asking the dev if it will work for the t999.
Sorry I couldnt answer about the rest, im too noobish for all that
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yea thats the trick, Seems its hard to even find that advice lol. I mean long as I dont use the international s3 roms. Just between Tmobiles and ATT. I dont know. I dont even know if its considered the same model and could use the same rom. Perk of using an ATT rom, may increase my network speed some along with being able to use their apps. Atm I cant use the ATT Visual voicemail since it says my phone isnt compatible. Which I know I could prob bypass that with the build.prop provided I knew which model to make my phone.

[Q] AT&T i747 unlocked using T-Mobile

First of all i wanna say, you all do an amazing job with all of this. So ive been looking around the forums and i cant find an answer to my question, so i will post and wait for replay. i have the at&t version (i747) of the gs3 and had updated to 4.1.1 via kies. early march i found a post on your forums about sim/carrier unlocking and tried it out. it worked w/o any problems, so i headed to t-mobile to jump on their monthly unlimited 4g plan. installed sim and had no problems. all functions work: calls, im, sms, mms, data (edge, 3g, and HSPA+), everything. on march 17th, i decided to try out a custom rom. i odin rooted my phone with cwm then tried out [ROM][4.2.2][STABLE] LiquidSmooth v2.1 - d2att - 3|16|13. works absolutely fine. sorry for the long wind but i just want to make sure i give all info before posting my question as i may prevent unness replies. having an at&t phone using tmobile as the carrier, can i use roms intended for t-mobile only, or do i have to stick to at&t/multi-carrier roms only?
Honestly making sure you have a T-Mobile put in is all that matters. Other than that they are fairly interchangeable.

I have been making roms, from Canada claro i747m, and tmobile t999 and att 747 and they all work as they should. no problems at all, using stock att modem i747ucdlk3 without any issues...
all I did was change the build prop to represent d2att..
I have simplemobile which is a tmobile company.. except for now I just used up my 4g.. I usually get 3g, but for some reason im getting an E which speed is like 2g edge.. slow at the moment.. never seen that in 3 months..
check my signature, for my roms... they r all stock original roms..
I'm in the same situation as the op. I have at&t i747 unlocked to use with tmobile. My question is, if I flash a multi-rom What carrier do I choose during the aroma install? do I pick tmobile because thats what network im using now or do I pick at&t because its originally an at&t device? any help or advice would be greatly aprecciated.
during the install of liquidsmooth i chose att since i do have the branded phone. i cant use the lte settings for network cause tmob doesnt have their lte out yet (soon to drop), but i am wanting to try the tmobile install and see if i get any difference in data speeds. other than that, liquidsmooth is a pretty solid build. this is the only rom i have tried on my gs3 so far. id like to try others to maybe help give feedback for builders, i just wasnt sure if i could use tmobile or had to stick to att roms. thanks for the info.
on a side note, the rom unlocked a 1080p video record and i like showing ppl the OC ability. 1.9Ghz. YAY!!!
when I first made my Canada Claro rom d2can everything worked out the box. the only thing was it was showing me info of I747m, everything was still working, same when I made my tmobile rom, it was showing d2tmo, everything worked out the box, just that it showed me info of T999, so both of the roms worked, all I did was change the build prop to represent d2att ATT info..
So the answer is yes, u can use other roms... just be careful not to install the modem. I never changed that. I remove them from the rom.
Danger,, I tried making the international GT I9300 and removed the modem, changed the build prop.. almost bricked my phone, played with it to try to make it work, It would hang and sometimes not boot up... so stay away from international one.
so if u try Canada or tmobile u should be safe, its the same phones... or if someone post roms that are ported to att i747.
I am using i747 for T-Mobile.
Can somebody tell me what ROM i should use in order to get WIFI Calling on it ?
Thank you.

HSPA vs lte

Since we now have the t999l, how is the battery compared to the hspa version? And say I don't get LTE in certain places, can I still get hspa? Want to try and see if I can swap out. When I switched to T-Mobile the Rep said this would get LTE even though I thought he was full of ****. So want to see if I can swap them for free

I was using the at&t s3 with LTE for a couple of days.. During those days I did not connect to WiFi because I wanted to find out the very same thing you are asking.. I used it for about 3 days and my results were that the battery usage was extremely similar to what I have been used to while using hspa.. And yes you will get hspa when you are not in lte coverage.. If I could swap for the lte version I would do it in a heartbeat.. Lte was fast and the speeds were a lot more consistent that hspa for me.. If you are able to swap for free do let us know!

i have the t999l . I find battery life to be exactly the same as hspa plus. yes... if lte isnt available you will get hspa. Phone works great and data is strong and consistent.
Now for the negative part. Tmobile is slow to roll out updates for the t999l version of the s3. (t999l still didnt get multi window update as of yet).
And rom support on xda for the t999l is extremely slow at the moment. So your pretty much stuck on stock firmware.
and yes...the tmobile rep is full of it. there is no way to get lte on t999.

no way to swap. all tmobile offered me was a 167$ for my old s3. and i have to pay the 450 difference for the t999l. terrible.
that being said though..if you can get a t999l for 350-400 on ebay...its worth it. because in NYC....the lte is strong dependable. and hspa as back up is very serviceable.

Only some have got the L from a warranty or ins claim.
I'm afraid you'll be outta luck though on getting it swapped.
Roms don't matter. Every rom in the dev section can work. Some you have to edit the script, most will flash with no problems.
Don't expct to see many T999L roms until a dev gets one, which I doubt will happen since they're more likely to upgrade to the S4. But it shouldn't matter because like I said, the T999 roms should work fine.

I'm sure if I make a big enough stink... Cuz I asked specifically about this device getting LTE once tmo launched it. He swore up and down yes, lol yeah right. I originally got the s2 and swapped it up for the s3, same guy who sold said he'd do it

Just called. The rep said he would right now if he could... But the problem lies in the 30 day exchange system. They cannot override, even if I paid a restocking fee, the system that enables you to do a swap. But, he did say call tmo corporate and try to get through to loyalty... They can override and he said he'd be upset too and thinks its silly to release a second device. Will update once I get through to loyalty

I cannot guarantee this will work for all of you, but here is what happened:
Called customer support and spoke to a lady who came from sprint, so she understands my curiosity and praise for tmo coverage/speeds. She gave me the spiel of LTE not being everywhere, wait for a newer device, etc. But she did say she could transfer me anyway to loyalty. After talking about tmo vs sprint in terms of LTE rollout, and laughing and how terrible sprint is, we parted ways and off we went.
Spoke to a gentleman named AJ, but the system has him down as Andrew. I expressed my concerns for my rep telling me I'd receive LTE on this variant once LTE rolled out, firmware updates, etc. He said he could send me a device, NOT GUARANTEEING it would be LTE, but most likely. Chances are it'd be refurb'd, but he'd send it AND waive the 5$ fee. Said I have 7 days to send either device back and could try again if it isn't LTE. Did however say there's a 6 day back order but I'd get overnight shipping once it came in. If it isn't LTE, said I could try again AND he could try to waive again but not a guarantee.
Bottom line, try it of you're somewhat new to tmo. I tried once and maybe got lucky with both reps at customer service. You might too

Regarding battery, unless you are heavily using LTE, you won't notice much difference. Both should throttle down to 2g untill a transfer is initiated. Then they will go up to their best possible. So an lte device on standby should be the same as the hspa one.
As for battery use while actually being used, lte should drain a good bit more juice from what I understand.

This is true, however the way I see it, faster speeds = less uptime = less screen on time = less battery consumption. Idk if it actually works this way, but I'd certainly imagine it to be somewhat relative. Less time loading a page would use the radio and screen less to get the information you want, but then you face the problem of having all that speed and wanting to read every wikipedia article simply because you have the speed to do so.

AT&T vs. StraightTalk Wireless

Does anyone know which of these two has the most or strongest coverage areas with 4G / 4G LTE in the USA? I'm asking because I'm currently using AT&T and their services cover just about every area I have been to. The 4G is awesome. But StraightTalk gives you 5 GB of high-speed data for just $45.00 /mo. while AT&T only offers 2 GB. Is StraightTalk's services as good as or better than AT&T's?
Straight talk uses 3 different networks for byop. Sprint,at&t, and T-Mobile networks. If youre using an at&t modeled phone on straight talk youre still using at&t network. If you brought a tmobile phone to them it would use t mobiles network. And same thing for sprint phones. But why not go to cricket? Im using my unlocked d851 on cricket which is also at&ts network. But i get 10gb LTE for 60 a month. Im definitely happy with it. I havent gone over my high speed limit yet. Ive been with cricket for 5 months now

The reason i asked if youve activated, im wondering does straight talk use a att.net based apn or if they use an aiowireless.net apn like cricket does. No big deal either way i guess. I can testify the aio apn works just fine but i just imagine an apn with "att" in the address to be faster lol.. This is based on nothing

No. I have not begun my service yet. I just ordered a StraightTalk-AT&T Micro-SIM Card Kit off of eBay. It's coming form North Carolina. I live in South Carolina so I'm hoping to have it by Saturday. I'm switching when I get it. I've already used up my 2 GB of High-Speed Data from AT&T GoPhone. 2 GB is no where near enough data for me. I can't wait to switch!
