[Q] Verizon Wireless Wifi Tether - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

of course verizon is blocking Free wifi tethering, but when for example CM9 comes out, will wifi tethering be free?? Like Native wifi tether now the Apps.
Pumped for tomarrow Nexus day

I've been searching relentlessly for a way to get Wireless Tether for Root Users to work on my brand new VZW Galaxy Nexus.
No dice. The Dev has been notified.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1257
If you install the latest BETA version and select the Samsung Galaxy S2 under device profiles, it ALMOST works, throughs in error in the log: "Activating WiFi interface.... FAILED"
Totally crushed about this. Not sure if it's happening due to a VZW side safeguard or if it's simply a progrmaming issue the dev can fix :\

Really hope he can fix it easily

I am starting to think VZW has something under the hood preventing ANY of the wireless tethering apps to work. Either I'm wrong or we have to wait for a cooked rom without VZW garbage.

Try running version 2.0.2 wifi tether works on my thunderbolt whereas built in didn't and neither did any newer versions.

we need to find where the provisioning check is.. i found it on the droid razr. been looking on the GN.. cant find it.. im using sqlite, btw..

Pdanet for tablet will bybass the bluetooth tether app built into the phone. The native bluetooth tether is also pulling the verizon subscription.

I wouldn't be surprised if the stock Wireless Tether app communicates with Verizon directly. It seems like it takes a little too long if it was just checking a file on the phone.
The wifitether guy is apparently working on a fix.

Of course it is talking to verizon, it has the auth check enabled, just like every other verizon phone. What we need to find is a way to disable the check. Sadly I don't think it as easy as a setting to be found in SQLlite. I am thinking maybe comparing the tethering part of the code between the GSM and the CDMA versions.

Don't mean to rub it in guys, but that's exactly why I got stock unlocked GSM version on T-MO rather than evil Verizon garbage.
My laptop hooked up to my t-mo GNex is pulling 8mbit

Once custom ROM builds and custom kernels come out shouldn't this not matter?

Oops I accidentally thanked you for this post.
Now let me rub this in. I get over 10 Mbps download speeds on 4G LTE. We will find a workaround for the lack of tethering eventually.

Yes and your battery lasts <6 hours tethering on LTE.

So charge the phone. You're tethering; you've probably got a laptop or something you can charge it from. It might not actually charge it, but it'll slow down the drain.

Galaxy Nexus WiFi hotspot working on AT&T w/o tethering plan!

I'm coming from an iPhone 4S and so far I really like the Galaxy Nexus (although it definitely does have its shortcomings compared to the iPhone). I was just playing around in the settings and found Wifi hotspot options. With the iPhone these options never worked unless you paid AT&T extra for a tethering plan (which is not even available when grandfathered into an unlimited plan). I tried turning them on and configuring a PW and lo and behold it worked! I didn't see this mentioned yet and thought others would like to know as well.
Are you rooted and using a custom rom, or still stock?
I'm still stock...just got the device last night. Also still on 4.0.1 and device shows as no updates available.

I almost never use tethering but the few times I'm traveling it will be very beneficial. I highly doubt AT&T would switch me to a tethering plan if I use less than 1 GB of tethering per yr!

You bought an unlocked phone not associated with AT&T. As a result, the tethering features built into android are not blocked. This is one of my favorite feature of my Nexus One.
I tether all the time and us ~1.5GB of data a month. Although, I have gone as high as 3GB... (I have unlimited data)
Enjoy!

Precisely...rooting or custom roms have nothing to do with this. Att effectively has no control over how you use your phone or data in this case.

Uhh we knew this. Unlocked phone man. It just works. This is how phones are meant to be.
The iPhone is provisioned by AT&T and its IMEI's are known in AT&T's database. So they're able to block and charge for ridiculous services like tethering.
I have tried this out and it works. Is there anyway for AT&T to tell if we are tethering though? Should I be on a tethering apn?

I've used tethering on my N1 for the past two years. Generally, I use around 1.5gb/month... No problem so far *knock on wood*.
was working - not now
yip have been using wifi hotspot for some time now
on my old SG1 and then on my Nexus
I has however stopped working recently, and cant see why
the app appears to be working but the wifi network is never discoverable
if anyone has a fix could you let me know
thanks in advance
m
Lol they know when your using it tho... with my Nexus one I was sent a text message saying my plan will change if I continue with tethering... I got out of unlimited last month and its the best thing I could have done... unlimited Mobile to Mobile (Verizon Sprint and T-Mobile) but 700 minutes for land lines. . Unlimited text and 5GB a Month... I hate being throttled so the switch was made. I'm paying less then when I was unlimited =]

Wi-Fi Teather for CM7.2?

Searched and still didn't find it. Sorry if it is out there. Is there something lurking about to allow wi-fi teathering on the DINK using CM7.2? would be nice to use it for my laptop when I'm away from the house.

Ah it is in menu>settings but farther down the list. Tethering & portable hotspot. Thanks! Didn't even realize that was even there!!!!!
Edit: Reading the info from the help section there, I wonder if the hotspot part could still incur charges from Verizon if I use that feature. My understanding was that the wi-fi tethering was different that the hotsopt feature. Does anyone have any information?

If you are running CM7 you wont incur any extra charges from Verizon, ive been using mine for over a year.
Hope you're right. The wife will kill me if I use it and Verizon charges us for using it.

+1 i also have been using it for ever and not one extra charge. to my knowledge. 3g tether is undetectable dude to how the network see's the data coming in and out as a whole.
hell you can even edit your cdma settings if you are on a stock rom to use narrative tethering.
How do you do that syn?

They both can if they're on LTE or WiFi. The Viper doesn't have SV-DO so... those are the only options.

Well you can on the GN, if on LTE.
The reason the Viper can do it is because Qualcomm puts their LTE and 3G on one radio, and voice on another in some of their devices (Thunderbolt, Rezound, Viper).
The radios in the GN have voice and 3g on one radio, and LTE on another.

Actually, it has the same radios as the Thunderbolt and Rezound, so it is one of the few devices that can do it over 3G.

Thats interesting because its not listed as an SV-DO device (although apparently it is), which is usually synonymous with simultaneous voice/data on 3G.

interesting.
I only bring it up cause I thought is was weird that a top end phone can't do it but a entry device can. I came from att iPhone to sprint epic then to the nexus s cause updates are quicker on the nexus s 4g. If your a smart phone user and say you don't surf and talk your a liar. Let me call you right back I'll look it up on the web.
I forgot to mention this is in Lancaster Ca no lte in the area at all both phones were on 3g and the rep was saying "that shouldn't work your probably on wifi" I told him its disabled. He's like o.

Like I said its only useful when tethering for me. When on Sprint it was quite annoying that every text or call dropped my tethered connection.
Talking and surfing both on the phone? Not very useful.
I've used talk and surf at the same time on occasion.
I'm on the phone and my wife asks me for an address and I have to look it up on google while still on the phone with her. I guess I could have called her back, but it is convenient regardless even though that has happened maybe twice. Definitely not a deal breaker though.
I wonder if its a ginger bread and ice cream sandwich issue cause all the phones that can do it are running on gb.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA
The Viper is an Simultaneous Voice and Data (SVDO) phone. FCC tests did back that up. Even the EVO 4G LTE can do SVDO. And I have needed that capability since I switched from at&t to Sprint last February. I'm glad that I'm getting the opportunity to have that feature again. And Sprint did say that the Viper will be receiving it's ICS update in the near future so I don't think that there are software limitations in Android that would cause problems with SVDO.

Nothing to do with ICS or GB. It has everything everything to do with the SoC that's used. Newer Snapdragons support SVDO.
Also, just to dispel another misconception, the GN is not a "top end phone." Rather, it's meant to be the baseline.

Tmobile wifi calling?

Can Tmobile wifi calling be enabled on the GSM Gnex? If it is not natively available, I see that Tmo' just released the official ICS ROM for the Sensation and I am hoping the libs are the same and can be ported!
Anyone?
I wanted to bump this to see if anyone has new info. It has been a while, so my fingers are crossed!

If Tmobile ever sells the device we absolutely will see that functionality, however I am hoping someone else can figure out a way to get it working in the mean time.

T-Mobile won't ever sell the device. That's the main reason why. Add in the fact that it's extremely hard to port the functionality to non-T-Mobile handsets and I wouldn't ever expect WiFi calling on the GNex.

UDP VZW Wifi Hotspot

What is everyone's thoughts on whether there will be a way to turn on the wifi hotspot on phones that are on a grandfathered VZW Unlimited Data Plan? I think I remember hearing that one of the Nexus phones the hotspot worked out of the box without any special app's (Foxfi) or root. Thoughts?
6p works unlocked, running stock.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers mobile app
I can confirm that the Nexus 6p, out of the box, will run the wifi hotspot on VZW UDP, on both 6.1 and 7.0.
I can also confirm that the Nexus 5x, out of the box will NOT run wifi hotspot on VZW UPD, without rooting and modifying build.prop (easy to do if you are bootloader unlocked).
Reports are that bootloader will be locked on Pixel for phones sold by VZW. I'm not very optimistic that wifi tether will work
I have an upgrade on VZW - which I wanted to use for Pixel, but might have to buy Pixel (or iPhone?) and trade/sell to get an unlocked Pixel, which should be bootloader unlocked, but probably won't have VZW wifi calling available.
I have one on order from Verizon and that's the first thing I'm going to try. If not I'm returning it. The Verizon Bloatware is removable so I hope it's not baked in.

The wifi calling and verizon features should work on the unlocked pixel, just as the features worked on the unlocked Motorola Nexus 6 because verizon sold their version of the Nexus 6 so it should be safe to say the unlocked pixel will work 100% as designed to and on verizon also. Google lists the Unlocked pixel works on all 4 major carriers they never listed that for the Nexus 6p I believe, so them listing it will work on all four carriers should tell you otherwise they would have to list that there may be features that will not work on some of those four major carriers. I would have to say 100% by that that everything all verizon features should work on the unlocked pixel being used on the verizon service, just as they do on the verizon version of the pixel and pixel xl.
Thanks for the replies... My wife and I fell into the Note 7 debacle so we are trying to decide if we are going to tempt fate with the "safe" Note 7's or switch to a different phone and the Pixel caught my eye and something that might be worth having. So, aside from how the reviews end up, I have to have the wifi hotspot since our phones are our only access to the internet in the area we live.
Thanks again!

Confirmed Network Signal Refresh Lite works to get native hotspot working on VZW ULDP
I tried a few more times after it failed and got it to work just like the other poster said.
Press Refresh on Network Signal Refresh and hit you all apps button and switch to your hotspot setting.
Click it and it comes up .
Slow as hell tho, but still works. Useful in a pinch!!!
Check screenshots for proof!!!
Once you get used to it, it takes just as long as FoxFI did on the Note 7 so I'm happy.
I can also confirm. Refresh, turn on hotspot from pull down menu. You'll need to edit your menu and add hotspot for easier access. My speeds appear to be normal via computer via speedofme. Peaking at 20Mbs
Has anyone had issues with hotspot turning off after 15 to 20min . Ive read in another post this is happening to alot of people
Does anyone worry this could be patched by Verizon? I'm waiting for a Google pixel because I can't afford Verizon to block my wifi tether with udp. If I knew that this would work indefinitely I would just get my phone from Verizon
